In & Around May The Toys Be With You - Torquay Museum

Torquay Museum is now hosting the “May The Toys Be With You” exhibition, which stars one of the country’s finest collections of Star Wars memorabilia, toys and posters owned by collector Matt Fox. This includes the likes of X-Wings, Posters, Original figurines, and the iconic lightsabers. Matt’s collection will be joined by life-size replicas of Star War’s beloved characters, including Yoda, Boba Fett, R2-D2 and Darth Vader. An X-Wing cockpit arcade game will also be available for visitors to play. This exhibition arrived in a galaxy that isn’t far, far away on Saturday 17th June, with a launch event that included visitors such as Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, a squad of Stormtroopers, and other characters from the franchise. A virtual reality experience was available on the launch day (run in association with the Institute of Digital Art and Technology at Plymouth University), enabling visitors to use a lightsaber on the planet Tatooine and feel what life is like as an astronaut. The exhibition will remain at Torquay Museum until September 3rd.

Torbay News South Devon Players present “Jack the Ripper” The South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company are excited to announce our summer theatre show for 2017. Having won a selection of awards for theatre and film work over the past few months, including the overall national winner for England in the UK & Ireland Epic Awards 2017 in Newcastle, in March .17. The Players are set to hit the summer running with a new production based on the legends of Jack The Ripper. A dark drama based on the true story of the mysterious, unidentified serial killer who terrorized Victorian London in 1888. Combining theories of the killer, with a steampunk adaptation, in style, music and ultimate motive, this is a production by a nationally award-winning theatre and film company from Brixham, of local actors and creatives, bringing a whole new adaptation of this tale, to the stage. Steam-punk is an increasingly popular fashion and entertainment genre based on Victorian sciencefiction, with fashion and decor styles based on Victorian clothing, and mechanical looks based on complex cog based engines and devices. Remaining true to the legends of Jack The Ripper, and incorporating several of the theories as to his identity and motives, while creating a steam-punk themed environment for the show, this production is a new approach to the legends. Controversy rages to this day as to the identity of “Jack” and as to his motives and indeed ultimate fate, and we make no claim to solve them - only to present a drama that explores the legends, and leave the audience guessing. Featuring a mixed cast of members ranging from experienced “old hands” through to beginners, our largest ever costume team, this show is currently well into rehearsals, and everyone is looking forward to touring it around the local area in July. This show does contain violent scenes, and descriptions of wounds. It does not contain bad language. Ageing Well Festival This year’s Ageing Well Festival will be the 3rd festival run in conjunction with National Older People’s Day, and will be held at Lupton House in Churston Ferrers, on Saturday 30th September and our Big Lunches to celebrate in local communities on Sunday 1st October. The Planning is well underway, and the Festival Steering Group have lots of brilliant ideas for the weekend, including a 60’s theme, an array of taster sessions and activities from local groups, and a Health & Well-being focus. After the success and interest of the art competition at the Symposium in May, there will be a Christmas card design competition, in the lead-up to the Festival. More details coming soon. If you’d like to help plan the Ageing Well Festival and other events throughout the year, the Festival steering group is looking for additional members. If you are over fifty, available to attend monthly meetings (approximately five hours a month) and attend events, we would love to hear from you. Other opportunities available for anyone of any age to get involved in are writers and photographers, to capture the festival, and stewards to support the smooth running of the event. Funding News What will the General Election mean for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector? by Robin Causley, Community Funding Advisor The Prime Minister’s announcement of a snap General Election caught most people by surprise. Theresa May is seeking endorsement of her strategy for Brexit, and Britain’s impending exit from the European Union had been expected to dominate the debate. However, other major issues are now being openly debated and discussed and there has been the opportunity both individually and collectively, for the voluntary and community sector to actively raise awareness of the issues, causes, people and communities we were created to serve, and challenge the politicians to explain locally and nationally how they will respond. The General Election has provided an opportunity for a genuine conversation about how we tackle the big issues that affect peoples’ lives against the backdrop of social, economic and demographic pressure on the public finances. Whoever wins the election, our society faces huge challengesfrom keeping the health service going, reforming social care, the impact of welfare cuts, providing services for young people, tackling homelessness, caring for vulnerable people, protecting the environment-the list goes on. Those representing the voluntary sector and individual voters will have had opportunities to engage their local candidates about these issues in the street, at hustings events,on the doorstep; if they,or their canvassers have visited them,by writing to them, or via social media. Hopefully the parliamentary candidates have been told about the issues the voluntary sector work around and have been asked, how as an individual MP they would respond and help-what would they do to support your case or service? It has also been important to speak up for the sector itself beyond the individual issues and causes, the voluntary sector needs to speak up for its overall purpose, role and value. The election will set the agenda for the next five years and it’s vital that as a sector we set out a vision of why we exist and what we do and can achieve. Perhaps the best way of summing up the importance of the voluntary sector was made most recently by another group of politicians, the House of Lords Select Committee on Charities. They said “ Charities are the life blood of society. They play a fundamental role in our civil life and do so despite facing a multitude of challenges.Yet for them to continue to flourish, it is clear they must be supported and promoted.” Whilst their lordships are not standing for election, we hope the party leaders heed their call. But ultimately it is up to us as a sector and as a voice for disadvantaged people to ensure they do.

Charities play a vital role in all our lives and communities, and are essential to the future of our country. But this work is only possible because of fundraising and the generosity of the British people. Without fundraisers, donations to charities would fall dramatically. Recent public polling conducted for the Institute of Fundraising by YouGov shows that 81% of people give a donation only after being asked to support a cause, rather than from a spontaneous decision to do so. On top of this, fundraising is one of the most cost effective and sustainable ways in which charities can raise money to improve lives and communities. On average for every £1 invested in fundraising activities, over £4 is received for good causes. This is even higher for smaller charities, where the need for sustainable resources is greatest. Whilst the money raised for good causes is vital, research shows that great fundraising also has wider positive benefits for individuals and society. As a result of donating to charity,63% of people take additional positive actions such as volunteering or taking part in a campaign. 43% of people who donate to charity go on to change their behaviour(for example becoming more environmentally friendly) or say they feel better or more positive as a result of a donation. Supporting excellent fundraising not only helps charities to raise vital funds to enable their work, but also strengthen our communities and society as a whole. Charity fundraising is now more important than ever. Across the country we see rising demand for the services that charities offer, with 83% of people using a charity service in the last year. At the same time many charities are struggling to meet this demand for their work. The Institute of Fundraising states there are three specific areas where political party leaders could support charities to raise funds to improve lives and communities, and to help promote and celebrate excellent fundraising: 1) Support smaller charities to fundraise so that they can have even bigger impact. 2) Support legacy giving, particularly through prompting more people to consider leaving a gift to charity in their will. 3) Work with the Institute of Fundraising nationally and locally to celebrate and promote excellent fundraising.
