In & Around Midvale Clinic services to move to Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre (currently known as Paignton Hospital) Midvale Clinic based on Midvale Road, Paignton will receive patients for the last time on Wednesday 31 May 2017, and the building will then close. All services provided at Midvale Clinic are then moving to the Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre (Paignton Hospital site) from Monday 5 June 2017. Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, which run the services has informed Midvale Clinic patients, their carers and GPs of this relocation. Posters are also being displayed in community locations such as GP surgeries, pharmacies, libraries and schools as well as in Paignton Hospital’s Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) and outpatient areas of Torbay Hospital. There are no longer any inpatient beds at Paignton Hospital, and the MIU remains open for the time being but is scheduled to close in due course. As a result of these changes the hospital is being renamed as Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre. There will be new signage to reflect this change of name. This relocation is happening as part of the wider changes to community health services announced by South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group (SDTCCG) earlier in the year.
Torbay News What is changing?
On Wednesday 31 May Midvale Clinic is closing.
The Clinic will receive patients for the last time on 31 May, and will then close.
From Monday 5 June
All services previously provided at Midvale Clinic are moving to the Paignton Hospital site. The outpatient appointments service will contact all patients with appointments confirmed for 5 June or later.
I thought Paignton Hospital was closing?
The Minor Injury Unit at Paignton Hospital remains open for the time being, but this is scheduled to close in due course. There are no longer any inpatient beds at Paignton Hospital. As a result of these changes the hospital is being re-named as Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre.
Are changes happening elsewhere?
There are plans for other changes across South Devon and Torbay, all informed by the community consultation ‘Into the Future.’ Some of these planned changes have already been implemented, and further changes will be happening including having a Health and Wellbeing Centre in each area. We will publish more information on the planned changes over the coming months.
Further information
The community consultation ‘Into the Future’ is available on South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group’s website. In & Around Resilient Woman Summit
Across Devon many women are coming into contact with the justice system unnecessarily, and when in contact, are having poor experiences, which often makes the situation worse for them and their families. CoLab Exeter has secured funding from The Ministry of Justice to challenge this issue. To kick start this project we would like to invite you to participate in a one-day “collaborate-to-change summit where women like you can come together to co-design new ways to improve the lives of vulnerable women and their families by focusing on resilience first. The summit will be on Saturday 10th June, 9am-5pm at CoLab Exeter. The goal is to radically rethink what is currently offered - and in fun and creative ways, begin to design something different. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to share thoughts, ideas, aspirations and talents, so together we can co-create the blueprint for a new way of supporting women in Devon. For more information about the project, please visit our website by clicking here. You can book your free tickets for the Resilient Woman Summit on Eventbrite by clicking here.
Torbay News Creativity at Work - Workshops in June Creative problem solving is a structured, effective process which will help your organisation to overcome challenges and be more innovative. Paignton-based charity The Creativity Centre runs practical workshops which equip organisations with the skills needed to creatively solve problems, find innovative solutions and put them into practice. Participants will: • Identify key issues they want to tackle • Dare to think differently • Realise they’re more creative than they think • Learn new skills in a supportive environment • Try out various creative thinking techniques to take away • Work with colleagues or peers to find innovative solutions • Create a workable action plan for their organisation The workshop leaders have over 20 years’ experience of leading creativity workshops, and their expertise in the field is recognised internationally. They learned the techniques of creative problem solving from the original inventors of the process, and have refined it and added their own twists. Previous clients include universities, local and national government, large and small businesses, national and local charities and professional associations. They have presented at conferences and events internationally and authored many books and papers about creativity development. What is creativity and why do we need it? Most people see creativity as something to do with the arts, and something that they either have or haven’t got. In fact, it is possible to be more creative about anything. Creative thinking can be learned, and it can be taught. Deliberate creativity is very useful for organisations and creative problem solving processes can be used to make deliberate creativity happen. Why do we need creative problem solving? Many problems can be solved without using deliberate creativity techniques. For example, it’s quite easy to decide what to have for lunch or what birthday present to choose for someone. It’s only when a problem is tricky to solve that creativity techniques become really helpful. Use deliberate creativity when: 1. There’s not a single correct answer 2. You are not sure what the real problem actually is 3. You know where you want to get to, but don’t know how to get there. There are a number of different tools and techniques that can be used for these types of problem. Creative problem solving is just one way of approaching a problem and is particularly good for 1 & 2. What people say about our workshops What previous participants said: “It gave us the opportunity to look at issues from various angles” “I learned different methods for tackling problems” “The workshops are both informal and informative” “Good to get time to work on a real problem issue” “Discussing ideas and looking at frameworks for analysing and implementing ideas” What people say about our workshops generally: ‘Inspiring, excellent’, ‘interesting, enjoyable’, well-organised and enthusiastic facilitators’, ‘good pace, not too formal’, ‘opened my eyes to the larger picture’, ‘really suited what we needed’, ‘very useful, time well spent’. When & where? This is a two-part workshop which takes place over consecutive Wednesdays in Paignton. Part One 14th June – 10am – 1pm Part Two 21st June – 10am – 1pm Please note: Participants will need to attend both workshops Cost Early booking discount (book before 1st June) £75 per delegate includes both workshops (full price £100) 20% discount for small charities, non-profit organisations and special offers for multiple delegates from the same organisation. Please enquire. How to book We like to work with small groups so places are limited. To reserve your place please email: marilyn@creativitycentre.com, phone: 01803 527200, text: 0759 007 9550 or reserve via Eventbrite by clicking here. Symposium of Ideas - fOLLOW-UP A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make Torbay’s first ever Symposium of Ideas so successful! Nearly 400 people attended the Ageing Well event, which was held at Central Church, Torquay on Saturday 6th May. The feedback from the event has been resoundingly positive.
“The Symposium was excellent, very well organised and very enjoyable” “I would like more of these events with activities so people get together and not feel isolated” “Time went too quickly. Right now I would rather be dancing than writing!” The Symposium of Ideas was an idea by the Festival Steering Group, who are all older people, to build on the incredible success of their first festival at Torre Abbey in October 2016. The Festival Steering group work closely with the Ageing Well Programme Office, Jess Slade, Sophia Sheridan, Matt Saunders and Sue McDermott on promoting positive ageing across Torbay. Since their first festival at Torre Abbey in October 2016 the Positive Ageing Team have engaged more than 1,700 people through the Festival, Food For Thought engagement work and the Symposium of Ideas. But they couldn’t do it without your support, so from all involved… A massive thank you to all of you!
AWT News You’ve got to laugh by Nicola Jones Laughter is serious stuff. Laughter it is said is the best medicine. And thanks to Ageing Well’s Symposium of Ideas, held at Central Church in Torquay, many people from across Torbay had the chance to join comedy juggler Ben Cornish for a free two hour workshop on comedy and movement. Over the course of two hours, a room of strangers, the majority of whom were in their 70s and 80s, got to look at laughter’s role in our lives and to laugh and play together. To start things off, Ben asked the group some simple questions. When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? Have you ever found yourself laughing at something you weren’t supposed to laugh at? What funny thing happened to you recently? As adults we seem to spend so much time worrying about life that we forget to laugh and play, or worse we learnt that being playful is only for children. It’s so much easier to be serious; we can probably count on one hand the number of times we laugh in a day. So let us look at the effects and benefits of laughter and play. When we laugh and play the years fall away, we feel younger, our faces soften and our eyes shine. When we are playing we open our hearts to life and to those we are laughing and playing with. Laughter and play are like a glue that helps build and strengthen friendships and relationships. Families that laugh and play together seem to stay together and laughter can help us through the toughest of times. Laughter has also been shown to reduce stress, strengthen our immune systems, reduce pain and most importantly lengthen our lives and improve the quality of our lives. Laughing and playing as adults all sounds wonderful in theory. But we must be honest and acknowledge that bringing play back into our lives takes time and effort. We have to choose to make a little time for laughter and play and that means we have to take laughing and playing more seriously! We have to seek out opportunities for laughter and play. Which brings us nicely back to the purpose of the comedy and movement workshop. This was an ideal opportunity to choose to spend a little time laughing and playing. The workshop simply involved us all joining in with some simple activities and playing let’s pretend, all of which could be done sitting down and which you could try at home with friends or family. The group acted out an everyday activity, such as ironing and pretended to be happy, then sad or cross. Comedy often pokes fun at social status, so we tried to act as if we were the most important person in the room, and then pretended to be a nobody. We also got to tell a ukulele what we thought of it and the majority of us seemed to enjoy giving it a good old telling off! But the best example of playing was having a go at spinning a plate on a stick. After several attempts one lady shouted out joyfully, “I’ve got it!” Ben said every time someone gets the plate spinning they shout out something similar. Experiencing playfulness can be that simple, we don’t need any special skills or knowledge to play. So when an opportunity to play comes along, give yourself permission to play and say Yes to it. If you would like to find out about Ageing Well’s events where laughter and play is actively encouraged, call the office on 01803 212638 or email ageingwell@torbaycdt.org.uk
AWT News Sail around the Bay on the Wildlife Cruise!
A cruise around the beautiful coastline of Torbay has been organised by Liz Rayner, who decided to arrange such a trip after attending one of Ageing Well Torbay’s Food for Thought participation events earlier this year, and after talking with fellow attendees at our events. This will be an opportunity for residents of Torbay over the age of fifty to meet, set sail and enjoy tea/ coffee on board, along with complimentary cakes, all while taking in the sights of the Bay and its wildlife. This is a non-profit event, so please come along, come aboard, and sail around the Bay with us! Tickets are available from Ageing Well Torbay, via our office at Torbay Community Development Trust (4-8 Temperance Street, Torquay, TQ2 5PU, behind the McDonald’s on Union Street). They are £7.50 per person (on harbour price is usually £12) so please phone our office on 01803 212638 if you’re interested. Cheques need to be cleared before the 24th of May, and made payable to Paignton Pleasure Cruises. We will be setting sail at 3:30pm on Wednesday 24th May, from Paignton Harbour on The Dart Princess, so please make sure you get your tickets in advance!
AWT News Flashmob Across Torbay - A case Study by Marianne Parker, Wellswood Community Builder As a new Community Builder last year, I was visiting groups for people in Wellswood to discover what was already ‘strong’ in that community and to find ‘connectors’ to build a network of local people to support and connect isolated people over 50 back into their community. I wanted to see what engaged and inspired people to connect with each other and engage in physical activity to improve their long term health as they got older. I found many diverse groups at the hall at St Matts Church and I found six weekly keep fit classes there – all attended by ladies over 50! I joined in the classes and noticed that these groups were established (some for twenty years or more) social groups where people enjoyed meeting up and chatting as much as they did the exercise. People who were missing were discussed and accounted for. Unexplained absences were followed up. They all cared and looked after one another. What motivated them? The classes were fun! The music was upbeat and inspiring. The ladies had a laugh together. At each class and group that I visited they gave me another contact and class to visit. They were from all over Torbay. As I visited the other classes recommended across the bay I found more ladies from Wellswood. I asked them if they would like to join a Flashmob. Most didn’t know what a flashmob was until I described it to them. Over a hundred people were really excited about the idea. I was at a ‘Prevention for Falls’ seated dancing class when I met Clare Parker from Dance in Devon and we agreed that it would be a great idea to do a Flashmob across Torbay with older people. I contacted 8 other exercise/dance leaders I had met across Torbay and we invited them to join us to choreograph and learn a dance to Abha’s Dancing Queen. The dance leaders taught their classes the routine. Two of them, Anne and Rachel (in Brixham) shared leading the rehearsals and the flashmobs in each town. Others that I met who weren’t in a class joined us for two rehearsals in each of the three towns, Paigton, Torquay and Brixham and for ten flashmobs across the bay. Other Community Builders also brought people along. Between 20 and 35 people joined us for the rehearsals and for each flashmob performance. Around 150 participants joined us for the project. Some had never danced before. Most had never performed in public or outdoors! We followed up the flashmobs with Celebratory events in Torquay and Brixham where we asked participants to tell us what they would like to happen next. They said they would like to take part in another flashmob in 2017. We asked them if they would like follow up classes and what kind of dance they would like to try next. They also tried some mini taster dance sessions at the Celebratory events and at the Ageing Well Festival on October 1st. In November they walked down the red carpet to attend the film Premiere of ‘Flashmob Across the Bay’ at Torquay Museum. This was a five minute film that celebrated all the ten flashmobs, in different locations across Torbay that had been filmed and edited together. Squeals of surprise and delight accompanied the screening of the film as people recognised themselves dancing! They also enjoyed the competition, ‘Where’s the Flashmob?’ People were introduced to the idea of Timebanking through games and several ‘offers’ and wants’ were matched up on the night. Following on from this, some flashmobbers attended Dance in Devon dance workshops at Dartington ‘Space’ to include Contemporary African Dance, Flamenco and Aerial work. New ‘Happy Dance’ classes were then set up, in Paignton and Torquay, which the flashmobbers are now attending, in addition to a new exercise class in Brixham. We are now planning our next ‘Flashmob Across the Bay’ for 2017 and are looking forward to meeting more flashmobbers and potential dancers this year!
