Torbay Volunteer Forum

Torbay Fundraiser’s Forum

The first Torbay Volunteering Forum took

The next Torbay Fundraisers’Forum will

place on July 29. Nearly 50 people attended and right from the outset- during registrations and teas/coffees- the buzz was palpable. People were catching up with old acquaintances, new links were being forged, names being put to faces, and all brought together by a common interest in volunteering. Peter Stokes, Volunteer Centre Manager said: “Before the forum, I was hoping that we would make the forum a quarterly event. After the success of the forum, we are definitely making the forum a quarterly event. “The number of attendees was hugely encouraging, as was the enthusiasm shown by both attendees and contributors. There is clearly a genuine desire within Torbay to take the positive contribution already being made by volunteers and build on it, and there is also clearly a recognition that this will be more easily achievable if we all pull together in the same direction.”

take place on Monday 7th September,2-00pm,at Endeavour House, Higher Union Street,Torquay.Guest Speaker will be Kelly Spry-Phare,Development Officer from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Agenda and meeting papers will be sent out shortly. BOB JOPE IN THE NEWS

Bob is the Groups Liaison Volunteer for the Community Development Trust

· Adult Literacy in Torbay · ‘If I couldn’t read I wouldn’t be able to ….’ How many ways can you finish this sentence? This isn’t an exam question, but to some people in Torbay it’s a reality. The shocking truth is that one in twenty adults in this country has exactly that problem as they’ve never learned to read. As adults, they often feel ashamed, and go to great lengths to hide their lack of understanding. They might say, ‘Oh I’ve forgotten my glasses, would you read this for me please?’ Or, they might ask a friend, ‘Would you help me fill in a form. I hate forms, they make me nervous.’ Now there’s an organisation that can help them. Read Easy teaches adults to read, not in a class, but one-to-one. Everyone who wants to learn has their own individual reading coach, meaning means that learning progresses at the reader’s own pace and, importantly, the whole process remains confidential. A new Read Easy branch has recently been set up in Torbay and Chair of the Group, Mandy Woodard, says, ‘This is a wonderful project benefiting the local community by providing adults who are poor readers or unable to read at all the opportunity to meet up with a local volunteer two or three times a week to learn to read on a one to one basis in chosen venues across Torquay and Paignton.’ To launch the project, Read Easy Torbay are looking for someone to act as a Coordinator between readers and their coaches. This is a wonderful volunteering opportunity for someone to use the skills and experience they’ve gained to help others get off the starting blocks, however late in the day. (Read Easy helps adults of any age – the oldest so far has been 84!) The Coordinator will meet new readers, match readers to coaches and provide support to reading pairs. ‘This voluntary post (travel expenses are paid) is a varied, interesting and many-faceted role that brings you into contact with lots of different people and organisations,’ they tell us, ‘ with the opportunity to make a significant difference to many people’s lives.’ It requires someone who is well-organised and able to prioritise, with excellent people skills and good planning, organisational and communications skills. Full training will be given, so if you are at all interested in getting involved, please contact Mandy to find out more on: 07593 223600. Closing date for applications is Monday 31 August 2015.

· The Prince’s Trust · I mentioned a few weeks back the tremendous work done by a group of young people working with the Prince’s Trust in Watcombe where they cleared an overgrown space and built a sturdy yurt. Tim Goodall, one of the team, explained just how much hard work had gone into it: carrying heavy crates and pallets up a long, steep slope, for example, digging foundations, layering the yurt with carpets and tarpaulin, and hammering in a solid floor. Despite all that, Tim told me, ‘It was one of the best things I’ve done in my life.’ The inner walls of the yurt were decorated with colourful cartoons and a striking black and white eye drawn by Beth, obviously the team’s very own Banksy! Last week I went along to the final presentation at the Foyer in Torquay where we were reminded of all that the group had achieved over their twelve week project, the work experience they’d had and the challenges they’d faced both individually and as a team. As they spoke about the project each of the team members talked about how much they’d gained in terms of self-confidence, and all were now looking forward to building on the skills they’d been using. Tim Wiltshire, who now hopes to go into youth work, in some ways summed up the positives of it all when he told the audience, ‘I’ll take what I’ve learnt to help others in the future.’ Bob writes a weekly column for the Herald Express, to read more of Bob’s articles follow the link below: http://www.torquayheraldexpress.co.uk/bobjope
