TCDT News TCDT’s 3rd Annual General Meeting and Birthday
June Pierce, chair of TOCF cuts TCDT’s birthday cake Torbay Community Development Trust celebrated its 3rd year birthday on 25th October, where we held our AGM. Big thank you to Brixham Rugby Club for hosting the event and to our keynote speaker Jenny Fish from Big Lottery Fund. I was part of founding the Trust and to be able to showcase all that we have achieved over the three years was a very proud moment. I know that for those who weren’t able to make it and who are online you will be able to access images, film and other content through our website www.torbaycdt.org.uk and/or our facebook page TorbayCDT including our Annual Report, which gives a lot more detail. We are a bit different and we are very proud of it. Remember the famous quote from Henry Ford, ““If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” We were set up because what we had was not fit for purpose. So what is different about us. We work with people to stimulate more thriving and connected neighbourhoods funded by Ageing Well. You might know them as your community builder, who are focused on supporting you to take positive action and you have. We have found and are working with over 1000 isolated people over 50, we have established a network of connectors (go to people in communities) of almost 1300, we have stimulated over 160 citizen led actions and set up 12 neighbourhood timebanks with 266 active members who have traded over 1600 hours and supported 160 small groups or associations. Our philosophy is that everyone has something to offer and everyone has something to gain, if we offer our skills to each other are reward is greater than we can imagine. I know that is the kind of neighbourhood I want to live in! 6
We also focus on building capability and capacity within the voluntary groups and organisations and our volunteer forum has gone from strength to strength, because we do this in an asset or strength based way, where the volunteer co-ordinators share good practice and approached and learn from each other. Feedback from attendees has been really positive. In the last three years we have delivered 444 one to one appointments to assist people to find volunteering opportunities, processed 1306 volunteering applications as well as run a range of workshops and other support. Our funding advisor has supported over 500 groups over this period, supported over 270 bids to be submitted and helped secure @3.25 million to support community and voluntary activity in Torbay. Due to our excellent relationship with the Big Lottery Fund, Torbay was the first place in the country where members of the community voted and allocated over @85,000 to local community groups this year. Possibly our most amazing achievement this year was setting up OurBus and providing a replacement to the No 60 bus that ceased at the end of march. This means thT A LOT OF ELDERLY people can still get out and about, but it so much more than just transport, it is a much needed social for people and when I drove the bus I realized that many of the passengers have become friends and rely on the trips into town to keep connected to others. Our impact is not all about community and voluntary activity. We have helped stimulate the economy and have enabled the creation of over 60 jobs in the three years. So, as I said I am so proud of what we have done but even more proud of the way in which we have done it – together with you the people of Torbay!

TCDT News
Simon Sherbersky, Lead Officer of TCDT thanking everyone for attending Fortune favours the brave (audentes Fortuna iuvat) Latin phrases rarely feature in my daily vocabulary, whether in person, on paper, or online however there are occasions when circumstances bring one to mind. Soon after I joined Torbay Community Development Trust (TCDT) it was suggested that I take a lead in organising this year’s Annual General Meeting. Immediately this conjured up images of a dull evening spent in a draughty cold hall but I was told TCDT do things very differently. The brief was that it was to be held in the daytime, in Brixham and to inform attendees of the activities and achievements of TCDT in its first 3 years as well as the normal AGM type business. A planning meeting was organised in late July and then from “out of left field” came the suggestion that an indoor village fete and fun fayre be created. The ideas then flowed freely with suggestions of a Fortune Teller, puppet show, juggler, Speaker’s corner, Wishing Well, and games like hook-a-duck, higher or lower card game and a tombola. Most organisations would have parked the ideas and proceeded with a more traditional AGM format however TCDT do things differently. Brixham Rugby Club was identified as a potential venue so a planning visit to view the Rugby Club was arranged. There were 2 rooms available, one room was ideal for conferences available with all the equipment needed to run an AGM and the equipment and the other was comfortable lounge area. As the day of the AGM approached the entire TCDT team rallied round and an indoor village fayre was created alongside a room that was more recognisable as a venue set up for AGM business, guest speaker and panel discussion. The guest speaker, Jenny Fish (Local Funding Officer from Big Lottery Fund) gave an informative speech about the new more localised approach to funding
from the Big Lottery Fund. In the afternoon the panel discussion on the theme of “Everyone’s got something to give, everyone’s got something to gain-working together to take the lead in our communities”. The panellists were Jenny Fish (Local Funding OfficerBIG Lottery Fund), Claire Gould (Citizens in Policing Support Manager-Devon & Cornwall Police) and Tracey Cabache (Community Development ManagerTCDT). The discussions centred around questions about volunteers and it was interesting to gain an insight of the different approaches from each of the organisations. The village fayre was opened at various times throughout the day and it was very rewarding to see the attendees engaging and participating in the various activities. The format allowed delegates the opportunity to network with others from the VCSE sector. The feedback during and after the event majored on the innovative and creative aspects of the day. So perhaps the indoor village fete and fun fayre was not such a crazy idea-perhaps the format will be adapted by other groups attending the AGM for their own events? There are few organisations that would have the courage to showcase their achievements in such an unconventional format. They do say ‘fortune favours the brave’ (from the latin:- audentes Fortuna iuva). I cannot help thinking that if there were more organisations that worked in the way that the TCDT team do, then so much more would be achieved. The facilities at Brixham Rugby Club facilities are a real community asset providing excellent facilities suitable for a variety of occasions run by a very accommodating team-so a big thank you from Torbay Community Development Trust. by Mike Norton, Finance & Business Support Manager at TCDT

TCDT News Fear That Community Services Could Face the Axe
A CHARITY in Torbay has expressed concern over proposed budget cuts announced by Torbay Council. The Torbay Community Development Trust (TCDT) is worried about the impact the proposals would have on local voluntary organisations and community groups if funding is cut in the Council’s budget next year. The proposed budget would see the Trust’s £60,000 funding reduced to zero. TCDT was set up in 2013 to support groups and organisations in the voluntary sector and to enable people to support each other in their neighbourhoods. The Trust is also aware of proposed cuts to the much needed voluntary youth groups in Torbay, which looks like it could be cut from £30,000 to zero. TCDT has supported 25 youth groups including Play Torbay, Brixham YES and Paignton Town Community Partnership (GEO PARK) to access over £1.3 million funding, and this support is now under threat. Core funding was provided by Torbay Council to set up the Trust based on the theory that TCDT would be self-financing after three years, with a pledge to support the Trust in this endeavour. Despite a lot of hard work and numerous attempts to develop alternative income streams, the Trust still has a gap in its income to deliver key support to local groups and organisations. The Trust raised £3,292,905 for community groups and voluntary organisations over the last three years, and a further £2.5 million for the Ageing Well Torbay project, funded by Big Lottery, which aims to reconnect communities and reduce social isolation amongst the 50+ generation across Torbay. 8

TCDT News Simon Sherbersky, Lead Officer of the Torbay Community Development Trust, said: “Obviously we are extremely worried about the future, we’re looking at a cut to our budget from £60,000 to nil and I think this will have dire consequences on the community and voluntary services in the Bay with no ongoing funding from Torbay Council. “We do appreciate the very difficult position Councillors are in and we know they need to make savings where they can, but from our point of view, Simon Sherbersky, these cuts could mean an end to our valuable support Lead Officer of TCDT for local voluntary groups and organisations in Torbay. Not only that, we continually bring in funding to the Bay from elsewhere with our funding bids. “For every pound the Council Tax payer invested in the Trust in the last year, they got back over £20 in terms of the money we raise from other funders for Torbay community organisations and voluntary groups.” The Trust’s work this year has ranged from saving the no 60/61 bus route which was at risk of being axed; the route is a lifeline for people living in Paignton and Torbay, and currently carries 5,000 passengers a month. Launch of Ourbus at Occombe Farm
The Trust has conducted 268 funding bids and raised £5.5 million for community and volunteer groups over the last three years, as well as facilitating volunteers who exchanged an astounding 2,862 hours of their time for their communities. Simon Sherbersky, Lead Officer of the Torbay Community Development Trust, continued: “I will be working in partnership with the Council to try and avoid these cuts as far as a possible and will be looking for inventive solutions to bridge the gap. “We need your voice to support us all in doing the amazing voluntary and community work across Torbay, so please complete the consultation survey and let the Council know what you think of the draft budget.” Torbay Council has released a consultation on the draft budget for 2018/19 and are asking for residents’ views. If residents would like to comment on the draft budget, it is open until Friday 8 December, and residents can do so at: http://www.torbay.gov.uk/council/ consultations/budget-consultation-2018-19/

Funding News Support your community in the Aviva Community Funding Bid! Two local organisations need your support in the Aviva Community Funding Bid. Bay Bouncers and Humanity Torbay have placed their project bids on the ACFB website, and need your votes! “The Aviva Community Fund offers you the chance to get funding for an important cause in your community. It’s open to everyone – the general public as well as Aviva customers, employees, insurance brokers or financial advisers (whether associated with Aviva or not). We want you to enter a project for your community and tell us what a difference these much-needed funds could make.
Bay Bouncers “A small family run club, we are committed to making Trampolining, Gymnastics and Tumbling accessible to all children and adults within Torbay and the surrounding areas. Making a club accessible to all means keeping prices affordable for all, because of this we simply do not raise enough funds to buy new up to date equipment to train our members up to the next level. This is why we need to bid for funds, We would use the money to buy a Tumbling Track to develop existing tumbling skills of 4+ year old’s in Torbay, South Devon. We want to provide an elite pathway that will develop and provide the opportunity to attain national standards. Torbay does not have the facility to aspire to this. Currently any child who wishes to work towards becoming an elite Tumbler must leave Torbay, and join a new club outside of Torbay. The development of an elite Tumbling squad will allow these children a voice in local and national competitions.”

We want provide a solution to homelessness and address the root cause, enabling people take back control of their lives. Humanity Torbay is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and we rely solely on donations and grants. Humanity Torbay believes everyone can achieve their full potential and is proud to say that everything we do comes with free love, hugs and hope. An Aviva grant of £20 to £25,000 would ensure this will happen and will give potential for further long term projects. Please vote for Humanity Torbay NIGHTSTOP. Thank you. x”

AWT News Ageing Well Festival The Ageing Well Festival 2017 was held on Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October. The planning began in May and was driven by a steering group of 9 older people, most of whom had been involved in the Symposium at Central Church, and others who attended the event and subsequently sought to be involved in the next Ageing Well celebration. These volunteers were key in all decision making, planning and execution of another successful festival. At the very first planning meeting, a 1960’s theme was agreed upon, inspired by the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely-Hearts Club Band LP, and thus flowed the imaginations of all steering group members with ideas, memories and inspiration. After researching venue ideas and visiting various locations, Lupton House in Brixham was chosen and secured, an old school among stunning grounds and woods. The large rooms and interesting spaces proved perfect for the variety of activities and events taking place. The Saturday was a packed schedule of activities and workshops, such as; Yoga, Bollywood dancing, Ukulele taster sessions and comedy workshops. A festival marquee housed back to back live 1960’s themed music and dancing by local acts and musicians, hour long interesting talks were in the Chapel and the ballroom was filled with stands and stalls of local community groups and organisations all showcasing what they do and giving information on how to join them. Advice corner was back by popular demand helping visitors with queries and questions on important topic such as IT, Legal issues, family history and benefits and entitlements. Local groups South Devon Players dressed as Hippies, Torbay Mods and their collection of scooters and bikes and an enormous 1960’s timeline in pictures just added to the fun and thought-provoking atmosphere that was the festival. Volunteers from the community were on hand to help on the day and did so enthusiastically and willingly, which was invaluable considering the steering group anticipated approximately 500 visitors on the day, when in fact more than 1200 came through the gates. This posed a few transport and entry predicaments, but the pulling together the steering group, volunteers and CDT staff meant this was rectified quickly and professionally. The sheer numbers on the day speaks volumes as to how these annual event is gaining momentum and interest year on year. The event was broadcast on FM stereo and included interviews with guests, steering group members and volunteers all sharing their experiences of the day. Blowing bubbles, hippies handing out flowers, hula hooping and a Doctor Who Tardis all added to the day that was a trip down memory lane, evident by the timeline memories shared and displayed by so many, memories such as; “1961 – The year I met my soul mate” “1963 – Saw the Beatles, still have the programme” “1969 – Watching the Moon Landing when I was 7 years old” Robert Hooper of Torquay said “I grew up in Torquay of the 1960s – and I just wanted to say it was absolutely brilliant - so much information for people of my age - and so much going on I couldn’t get to half the things I wanted to! All the people seemed so friendly - perhaps it was the peace and love and 1960s theme? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do it all again!!!” 14

AWT News Innovation Fund - Meet our new partners Recently there has been a wealth of TV shows and newspaper columns dedicated to the issue of loneliness and isolation in older people living in the UK. One particular show that seems to have caught a lot of people’s attention, involves a group of young children spending time with residents from a care home, with a very positive result for both age groups. When you think about the way we have structured today’s society, there aren’t many opportunities for young and old to mix unless they are family members. Which is strange given how beneficial it would appear to be for both age groups. How have we drifted so far apart from one another? Torbay has a particularly high ratio of older people, with approximately half the population being over the age of 50, this includes a high proportion of isolated and lonely older people. This is why the Big Lottery, using National Lottery money, funded a 6 year programme in Torbay to trial different methods that reduce loneliness. In December of last year the Ageing Well Team, began a large scale participation project called ‘Food for Thought’ at 20 locations across Torquay to find out what older people thought was and wasn’t working. Over 400 people took part by giving their feedback in person, by web survey, or through freepost postcards. There were many common themes identified during events, including transport, having places to go, the environment and being able to meet others. If you would like you can pick up a report of findings from our office on Temperance Street. Often with events like these it can feel that you give your feedback and then nothing is done with it, however I am pleased to say that the information we gathered during the Food for Thought events has directly shaped the future direction of Ageing Well Torbay. 3 key themes emerged from the results; 1) increasing the range of affordable activities available, 2) increasing the opportunities for people to benefit from the skills of older people and 3) to create better access to affordable technology for information, as well as increased opportunities between generations to connect with one another. Ageing Well Torbay launched an Innovation Fund to meet these objectives and trained a panel of older people to decide which project 16
applications would be successful. This resulted in 8 new partners joining Ageing Well. Daybreak will create new mental health peer support networks for people over 50, to reduce anxiety, depression and low selfesteem. Ellacombe Community Partnership will set up a new community internet café with opportunities for older people to expand their existing skills set, be able to socialise and receive free IT training. Healthwatch Torbay will also be helping older people get to grips with technology, by offering one to one support in the community or at home so older people can use online services and access social care resources. Karing will hold regular Sunday tea dances, as well as an activity week. Riviera FM are offering older people media training on all aspects of running a radio station. So-Fly will be helping to build mutual understanding and communication through peer-led groups, such as a young and old men’s woodwork group. Sound Communities will also bring young and old together to record, produce and broadcast memories and stories from around Torbay. Wellswood Community Partnership will provide a bookable ‘door-to-door’ minibus service. Ageing Well Torbay want more older people to be involved in making decisions about services and what matters to them. There are lots of opportunities to be involved, if you would like more information phone us 01803 212638.

Opportunities Volunteering Opportunities Christmas Volunteering There’s less than 6 weeks until the big day, so why not join in with the festive cheer and volunteer for a local charity in Torbay! Do-it.org has a new Christmas volunteering page where you can check out what opportunities are happening near you. Simply tap in your postcode and click ‘Register My Interest’ on any opportunities which catch your eye. If you can’t find the perfect festive opportunity just yet don’t worry as the page is being updated daily. If you’re in need for some inspiration check out these recently added opportunities... The National Trust The National Trust are asking for your help this December to bring festive events at Coleton Fishacre and Greenway to life. At Coleton Fishacre, the popular Christmas event Coleton Aglow is returning this year with a twist as it is themed around a 1920s Christmas party. At Greenway a pop-up 1950s Christmas cinema is arriving to the holiday home of Agatha Christie. There are a number of different ways that volunteers can help with both of these events. Volunteer Officer for the National Trust English Riviera, Laura Rugg, explained ‘At Coleton Aglow, Christmas event volunteers will be wrapped up warm in the garden, on hand at various points on the event route to make sure visitors aren’t missing anything and are having a great time. Torbay News inspiring arts supports Petroc in securing £2.4 million from Big Lottery Fund to help marginalised young people across Devon Inspiring arts has been successful, as part of a partnership bid led by Further Education College Petroc, in securing a £2.4 million grant to deliver a Building Better Opportunities project across the county. Building Better Opportunities is a programme jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund. Along with their partners, Petroc and inspiring arts will be using the funding to deliver a unique project for 18 to 24-year-olds who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Called Empowering Enterprise, the programme will seek to engage over 600 of Devon’s most socially-excluded young people and work with them to develop their employability and life skills giving them the confidence to return to employment, education or training. Petroc’s partners, which include public and private sector organisations, charities and community interest companies from across the county, have a wealth of experience of working with the socially excluded. Working together they will engage and support young people to tackle the barriers they face to finding a job or getting work-ready. As well as a one-to-one mentor, each participant will also have the opportunity to take part in group activities which encourage them to connect and engage in a project that is of benefit to their local community. Diane Dimond, Principal at Petroc, said: “We and our partners are proud to be working with the Big Lottery Fund and European Social Fund. Securing this grant confirms that our partnership has the potential to deliver real change for hundreds of marginalised young people across Devon. Through Empowering Enterprise, we look forward to helping participants build a more positive future for themselves.” Peter Smith Director at inspiring arts said “We are thrilled to be part of an exciting project like Empowering Enterprise. It gives us an opportunity to work with some of the hardest to reach young people in our area and deliver real positive change.” The partnership will begin to deliver the programme in summer 2017 and Empowering Enterprise will continue until December 2019.
