In this edition you will find informative stories and updates from organisations across Torbay, as well as all of the latest news and events from the TCDT. A highlight of the past month has been the official launch of the Torbay Timebank, which was held at the Windmill Centre in Torquay on the 16th November. We were honoured to have Edgar Cahn, civil rights campaigner, speech writer and originator of the Timebank scheme as our special guest for the day. Edgar’s attendance created considerable interest from the press and gave the Torbay Timebank a fantastic kickstart. As Chair of Trustees for the Torbay Community Development Trust, I am pleased to be able to introduce the rest of the board members in the first of a two part special feature, which concludes next month. This feature can be found on page 14. Martin Oxley Chair of Trustees

News from TCDT Torbay Timebank Officially Launches
Timebanking, which was founded by Edgar Cahn, now operates in 22 countries throughout the world and is an initiative that allows people to exchange skills and help one another in their local area. For example a
“Learning helps a person grow. The economy of neighbourhood and community is invaluable.” person could join the Timebank and offer a dog walking service for 1 hour, which would give them a credit of one hour to use for something that they may need, such as computer help or fence painting. Edgar S Cahn, civil rights campaigner and Bobby Kennedy’s speech writer made a special trip to Torbay this week to officially launch the Torbay Timebanking scheme. The launch event, which was held on Monday 16th November at the Windmill Centre, Pendennis Road, Torquay was well attended, with people from across the Bay keen to find out more about the scheme and opportunities to join the Timebank in their local area.
“We need a currency that values us for who we are” Special guest Edgar.S Cahn who has worked as a law professor, civil rights campaigner and speech writer to Bobby Kennedy, made a spellbinding speech about the origins of Timebanking and the value of community, place and individuals’ skills. Cahn began by saying “there should be no throwaway people” before imploring the audience to “start to trust one another. The smallest act of helping someone” he said “defines value.” Photos: Above Edgar Cahn Right top People at the launch Right bottom Edgar Cahn and Community Builder,Victoria Campbell

Torbay gets UNESCO status as new UNESCO Global Geoparks programme announced In its 70th anniversary year and 40 years after the creation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Science Commission of UNESCO (United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture) at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris approved the statutes of the new “International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme” which will allow for the creation of the new site designation of “UNESCO Global Geoparks” and the re-designation of all 120 existing Global Geoparks, including Torbay, as new UNESCO Global Geoparks. Previously operating with the informal support of UNESCO, the status of UNESCO Global Geoparks has been recognised under the new programme. The English Riviera, which includes the three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, and covers the entire Torbay area, became a Global Geopark in 2007 and, against competition from China and Europe, won the bid to host the 7th International Conference on Global Geoparks in September 2016 when delegates from around the world will attend what will now be the first UNESCO Global Geoparks conference. The English Riviera Global Geopark was an initiative that came from the Torbay Heritage Forum 11 years ago and led to the development of a grass-roots initiative, championed by the Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust, supported by Torbay Council under the direction of Nick Powe, director of Kents Cavern. It is now a partnerled organisation coordinating Geopark
activities and assuring adherence to a pragmatic code of conduct mandated by the Global Geoparks Network and UNESCO. Rory Stewart MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs, said: “This is the most fantastic news. It gives us a great international profile. Connecting our geological heritage and literally our bedrock with our community and economy is a very exciting opportunity.” Gordon Oliver, Elected Mayor of Torbay, said: “I am delighted with this outstanding achievement for Torbay. The English Riviera Geopark team is small with limited resources and has worked tirelessly to achieve this prestigious status for the English Riviera.” Melanie Border, English Riviera Geopark coordinator and Chair of UK Global Geoparks Forum, said: “This incredible recognition reflects the dedication and commitment of all of the UNESCO Global Geopark communities and partners in the UK and around the world.” The new designation was approved at the 38th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris on 17th November. The UK’s UNESCO Global Geoparks and the UK National Commission for UNESCO plan to mark the announcement with a series of community-focused events during European Geoparks Week in May 2016 and at the International Global Geopark Conference in the English Riviera Global Geopark in September 2016.

Bob Jope writes... Torbay Navigation I’ve been talking with lots of people busy in our sector over the last few weeks, from Liam at Alzheimer’s UK to Jess at Crossroads Care, from Ian and Sean at Eat that Frog to Ken from the Brunel Practice PPG – and, along the way, Kerensa’s Therese and Marilyn at the Acorn as well as popular local Councillor Dave Thomas, Timebankers like Julie from Chelston, and our own always energetic Community Builders. The reason for all of this enjoyable activity has been my promoting of the Red Cross Navigators project. The Torbay Navigators Project sees the British Red Cross working together with Age UK Torbay to help people over 50 in Torquay and Paignton navigate their way through challenging life changes towards an improved sense of wellbeing. This might be people who have experienced or are currently experiencing a personal crisis affecting their health and well-being, such as bereavement, recovery from illness, or loss of confidence. People referred to the project will be helped to identify their own personal goals towards increased social connections, independence and better financial health. After an initial visit to someone in need of help or guidance, a skilled volunteer will provide support aimed at helping people achieve their own personal goals. The Torbay Navigators provide training to their volunteers who are turn matched with participants in the project. The aim is to help people regain their confidence and find their way back into playing a full part in life, joining in community activities, for example, taking on volunteer roles themselves perhaps, or even returning to paid work. Laura Crichton, the Torbay Navigators’ Development Manager, says ‘Many people live alone without the support of family or friends and can very quickly become completely isolated. This project is about listening to what each individual tells us they need and exploring what support we can provide to allow them to make positive changes in their lives. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make a big difference, such as having someone to accompany someone to a social activity for the first time. By providing such personal support our trained volunteers can help improve wellbeing and quality of life and prevent longer-term social or health problems developing.’
