News from TCDT

Welcome! Matt Saunders, Marketing & Communications Apprentice I joined Torbay Community Development Trust, as I felt it was a good opportunity to take on a role that I could bring a lot to from my past experiences in volunteering and events, in an effort to contribute to the various communities of the bay, and also a good opportunity to learn a lot and build on what I already know and can do. At school I mainly studied the likes of Media studies and Drama, and would later take on a Foundation Degree in Performance, Arts and Events Management. I volunteered for various events, ranging from Plymouth University’s ICCI Arena at the 2012 Olympics Weymouth events, to iOrchestra’s Universe of Sound: The Planets, and more recently been a core team member for conventions run by Optimus Comic Cons. While I am at Torbay CDT, I will be working primarily on keeping the online assets (in particular, social media) up to date and active, as well as assisting with some event planning for the likes of the Ageing Well Festival, and even taking on some filming!

Community Builder News

The Community Builders have been busy this month, manning stands across Torbay. Including Gooseberry Fair in Galmpton - (pictured right) and Paignton Festival (pictured below).

Getting out and about is a brilliant way for the team to meet people and tell them about the project, including the ways Ageing Well Torbay can help them, their friends and relatives. If you see the Community Builders, don’t forget to say hi!

Did you spot the fantastic yarn bombing on Paignton Green, near the Geo Park? The very talented people from Crafty Cuppa, based at Great Parks Community Centre were behind the designs. If you would like to attend Crafty Cuppa get in touch with Community Builder, Nina Cooper. ninacooper@torbaycdt.org.uk

At the festival there will be lots to do including music and drama workshops, woodwork and crafts, a tea dance, bed time story and even a question time style event, where a panel discuss questions from the public about ageing and the issues affecting older people living in Torbay. Because many people living around Torbay are isolated and lonely, the festival will have a mini bus service to help people attend events. On Sunday 2nd there will be a number of lunches being held across the Bay region, it will be a great way for people to meet new friends and enjoy good food.

What do Torbay Community Development Trust, Torbay Council, several local churches, Age UK, Carers’ Trust Phoenix and the Friends of Paignton Library have in common? One answer is that all these organisations have hosted Dementia Friends Information Sessions. Dementia Friends is an initiative of the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to change the way our Society thinks, talks and acts about dementia. The idea behind Dementia Friends is simple but effective. The Alzheimer’s Society trains Dementia Friends Champions to deliver free information sessions. Champions return to their communities and deliver the sessions in their workplaces, to their friends and family, in schools and colleges,

to all kinds of groups and to the public.

with dementia in Torbay. One of the key messages that Dementia Friends promotes is that it is possible to live well with dementia. However, to live well with dementia people need support, not only from their family and friends but also as they go out and about in their local community, so do consider becoming a Dementia Friend. Maureen will be happy to provide further information on request. WATCHWORD Neighbourhood Watch August Lewsletter TORBAY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WORKING TOGETHER This is the first time that NHW has held this event as part of the Paignton Festival. The weather was kind and it was a very good day. The Police sent their mascots – Bravo and Juliet – to take care of us all and amuse the children. A big thanks to them, and to:The Police and Crime Commissioner's Office (who were carrying out a survey) Anode(NHW's partner in the Feel Safe Scheme) Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association (NHW's umbrella association) Crimestoppers (DaCCWA's partner) Police Crime Prevention Restorative Justice Victim Support Domestic Abuse Team – Sanctuary Housing Citizens' Advice Bureau Community Development Trust – Ageing Well Age UK Alzheimers' Support Trading Standards Centrepeace – Community Centre Parkfield – Young Carers' and Youth Services Torbay Neighbourhood Watch Torbay NHW's Feel Safe Scheme The Superintendent of South Devon, Jaqueline Hawley, re-organised her diary in order to come to the event. Superintendent Hawley spent time talking with every charitable group, and she said that she is “keen to collaborate with partners and voluntary organisations, to build capacity within communities and enhance early intervention”

One hand washes the other and Both hands wash the face. Collaboration - WORKING TOGETHER towards a common goal is the way forward. ..ooo00O00ooo.. POLICE MESSAGE Here is the usual message from the police, which we have all heard before, but which some people do not heed. BE AWARE, and TAKE CARE. It is tempting to leave all the windows and doors open in the summer, but it is also tempting fate ! DON'T MAKE IT EASY FOR THAT SHARP-EYED, OPPORTUNISTIC CRIMINAL TO FULFILL HIS GREATEST AMBITION TO PINCH YOUR STUFF !! Shut the windows and lock the doors. Secure the shed and the garage. Lock the car and wind up the windows. Don't leave something nice on the car seat. If “someone” wants it, they will smash the window to get it, leaving you with the consequences.
