for. So we fully expect to see The Orb adapt and change and look entirely different in a years’ time, although if it doesn’t we can live with that as well.
By Billy Hartstein Information & Advice Project Manager
On the 25th February Torbay will finally see the launch of a new online directory of services for all of Torbay and beyond. There has been a couple of false starts (isn’t there always with technology!) but this time we are ready. The directory will sit on a website called The Orb which will provide a platform for community groups, individuals, companies and services to advertise who they are and what they do. How much they cost and when they operate. It will also provide an events calendar and the opportunity to support local or national campaigns and items of interest. The launch of The Orb will not be the end however, in fact to quote Churchill it will not even be the beginning of the end but merely the end of the beginning. We are naturally pleased with how The Orb will look on the 25th February but expect it to change and adapt with how the people of Torbay use it and what they want to see it used
The idea to create a new directory has been bandied about for several years but with never quite enough enthusiasm to actually get it done, what has changed in recent years is two things. First of all (the carrot) is the realisation that different people need different things and that if people can find those things for themselves (self-help I believe it is called) they are more content with the outcomes. So better outcomes. Secondly (another carrot) if people are finding what they want first time without going to professionals etc. then it save a lot of time and time equals money. That does not mean to say that the Orb is not for professionals or others that may support of refer a person on. They are welcome to use as well and perhaps find what a person wants quicker. We are not talking about saving enough money to save the world, but every little bit helps and there should be enough to make sure that the Orb at least pays for itself. Finally the introduction of the Care Act means that each Local Authority and Foundation Trust must ensure that its area it serves has an online directory of services that includes independent financial advice, local offers as well as several
other legal necessities. Fortunately and possibly uniquely both the Foundation Trust and the Local Authority have given the Torbay Community Development Trust a free hand to develop the Orb on the understanding that we would include the legal requirements and co-produce the project with the people of Torbay. When we started this process people told us that they wanted something that looked different, that didn’t look either corporate or public sector. They wanted something that treated them as an equal and didn’t look down its metaphorical nose at them. People also wanted something they would use, contribute to and improve (interesting concepts!). As a result the community of Torbay have chosen or played a part in choosing. • • • • •

World Rock Against Dementia is coming to Torbay! The event will be held at the English Riviera Centre on March 19th 2016 and everyone is invited. Norms McNamara, one of the founders of the event says “We are asking all, no matter where in the world you live,
to hold an event which includes any type of music, (Not just Rock) and spread awareness of this awful disease whilst doing so. The beauty of this event is no matter where in the world you hold your event, any monies you may raise because of this, we want you to keep it local to where YOU are and spend it on whatever Dementia charities you want to. It could be a local memory cafe near you, or a care home near you. It doesn’t matter, we want all the money you raise to be spent how you want to spend it and in your area as we will be doing the same here in Torbay.”
“There are further improvements planned for junctions on Riviera Way and Newton Road over the next two years. These planned improvements show that there is continued investment into our highway network following the opening of the South Devon Highway.” Works are due to commence on 16 February 2016 to improve traffic flow to one of Torbay’s major roundabouts. mprovements at the Gallows Gate Roundabout will involve widening the Marldon Road approach to the A380 Ring Road. This will provide a lengthened two lane section allowing for additional queuing capacity. The work will be complete by April 2016. These works are part of a series of improvements, known as the Torquay Gateway Schemes which are improving transport links in the vicinity of the newly opened South Devon Highway. The additional queing capacity is being added as additional traffic is expected to use this route to connect with the new link road, instead of the more traditional Riviera Way route. Executive Lead for Community Services, Councillor Robert Excell, said: “This improvement scheme at Gallows Gate will really help to relieve traffic congestion on the approach to this roundabout, as well as assisting commuters by improving this direct route in and out of Torbay.
The works on Marldon Road have been approved for Department for Transport Funding by the ‘Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’

Under One Roof – The BIG Homeless Musical Saturday 27th February 7.30pm Tickets £13 from the box office at the Princess Theatre,Torquay This unique production features the sixty strong Unleashed Community Choir singing songs from Rent, Wicked, Godspell, Children of Eden and many other show-stopping numbers. Also featuring a host of soloists, drama presented by Unleashed Community Drama Group (made up of folk in recovery) and Doorstep Arts Juicy Theatre. This vibrant one-night only, benefit event for The Leonard Stocks Homeless Centre, shamelessly puts the big issue of homelessness in Torbay under the spotlight. It suggests, through words, music and drama, that we are all just three steps away ourselves from homelessness and so we are all ‘under one roof’. If you feel a sense of compassion for those in our community who have lost everything, or are battling through any sort of addiction through to a better life, then this unique theatrical event is the only theatre ticket you will need to purchase this year. Be entertained, be moved, be challenged by this provocative and at times uneasy and yet ultimately uplifting celebration of life! Come and support the amazing work Leonard Stocks provides for your community. ALL PROFITS WILL BE DONATED TO THE LEONARD STOCKS HOMELESS CENTRE!

Paignton Community Builder, Katherine Fallon tells us about Sew crafty Sew Crafty is made up of a group of ladies who were left without anywhere to go when their sewing and craft group suddenly closed in Paignton.
They got in touch with me because they wanted to start their own group. The difference would be the group would be run by its members with the aim of reducing isolation, create inclusion and aid the sharing of skills. The groups first meeting was on Friday at St Boniface 10 - 1. Some new members came along and they all learned how to use an over locker and discovered that they all had skills which they could share between each other, whether that’s painting, crocheting, felting, dress making or machine skills. They are now working with Robin to get a grant so that they can offer a really great sewing and crafting experience and run more sessions across the bay. There is even talk of a fashion show!!

Update from Preston Community Builder, Christine Durrant Hello everyone As I write in these bleak days of winter I would like to encourage you to pop round and check on your neighbours. In cold wet weather it is easy to get stuck indoors and not speak to a soul. I was delighted to see the fruit that came from one lady inviting a few people to her home to agree a time and day when people could meet. The newly founded Wednesday Club took place on the 2nd Wednesday in January at Occombe Farm Café from 2:15 to 4:00pm. A bright sunny day one moment followed by heavy downpours may have deterred some people but for the brave ones who ventured out we had a great time getting to know one another. The conversation was wide ranging and once again I discovered what interesting people we have living here in Preston. The Wednesday Club will take place every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month to complement the Tuesday Club also at Occombe Farm Café, from 10:30 to 12 noon on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays In January I was delighted to take up the offer of visiting our local Preston WI which meets in Preston Baptist Church Hall on the second Monday of the month at 7:30pm. It is certainly a lively group. There were almost 60 people there. The evening was varied and interesting. Birthdays were acknowledged with cards. Group participation in the theme of the evening was encouraged with a couple of competitions; the bloom of the month, judged by the speaker and the other, interesting glassware that was voted on by the members. The glassware was very varied and this competition also raised funds for overseas projects as members vote by putting pennies in the pots of the pieces they like the best. The speaker in January was Lee James from Cockington Glass. In February it will be Tom Sharples speaking about Sutton Seeds. One thing that I had not realised was how many extra-curricular activities are on offer via the WI. Meals out, theatre trips, educational trips, and a self-help craft group are all organised during the course of the year. The craft group meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm in the Preston Baptist Church Hall. Skilled and newbie craftswomen meet together to learn and help each other with a whole variety of crafts. This costs £3 and includes as much tea and coffee as you like! To learn more contact Sue Macleod on 01803 605890. Karing the charity supported by Pembroke House Surgery is going from strength to strength under the guidance of Kay. Their transport service now manages about 90 trips per month. They are always looking for new volunteer drivers so do get in touch with Kay if you would like to help or need a lift organised. Kay has put together a varied programme of afternoon sessions which are advertised in the Karing Chronicle, free to pick up from the Karing Office on Torquay Road, just down from Tescos. Look out for the South Devon Players talk in February and ‘Antiques Galore’ in March, games, crafts and memory afternoons. The Karing Office is open every morning from 10:00am till 12 noon when you can drop in for coffee and a chat to find out how Karing can help you and you can help Karing. Karing is there for everyone, not just patients at Pembroke House. Contact Kay on 01803 524799 The Ageing Well Project aims to reduce isolation among older people. If you know of anyone who would benefit from our help then please do get in touch. You can contact me via email christinedurrant@ torbaycdt.org.uk or on my work phone 07469 660887.

Why is an ageing population an issue? How many children live in poverty? How many people die before they are expected to?
….you can find the answers in your local JSNA.
A Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) is a collection of information providing an overview of the current and future health and social care needs of a population. Wider factors such as our income, our employment, our education and where we live have a big influence on our health – these factors are commonly known as the wider determinants of health. Our local JSNA includes information on health, social care and these wider determinants of health, whilst recognising that the needs of children will differ from the needs of the older people.
How can I use the JSNA in my work? Your local JSNA is a great tool for providing a population level picture of Torbay or smaller neighbourhoods within Torbay. It can tell you what the big issues are (e.g. obesity), what areas have the greatest need of support and what population groups would be best to target to help improve the lives of people in your community.
Where can I access the JSNA? The best way to access your JSNA is to use the South Devon and Torbay Knowledge and Intelligence website which can found using this link: www.southdevonandtorbay.info
What information is available? The website offers the following types of JSNA information: • Narrative overviews (Population overview, Starting Well, etc.) • Area based demographic and health summary profiles (electoral ward, etc.) • Topic based summary profiles (mental health, deprivation, etc.) • Interactive tools – population, assets and area profiles (LSOAs, wards, etc.) • Presentations and learning sets (Ibay, Deprivation presentations, etc.) – please feel free to use these resources in any of your project work I want a summary for South Devon and Torbay/Torbay? If this is the first time you are using JSNA, our narrative overview documents are a good starting point. They describe the needs and challenges of the local population and for specific age groups. Access this info using this link: http://www.southdevonandtorbay.info/needsassessment/jsna-narratives/
I want a summary for my neighbourhood? If you want an overview of your local community please refer to our area based summary profiles (1) or our interactive profile tools (2). Access this info using these links: 1. http://www.southdevonandtorbay.info/ needs-assessment/areacommunity-basedoverviews/ 2. http://www.southdevonandtorbay.info/ interactive-tools/profile-tool/ I need more help or I want to contribute? Press Release: Film, fantasy, & scifi convention “Excalibur” coming to Torquay in March to fundraise for an amazing opportunity for local actors: “Mordred” New Arthurian drama feature film and stage show announced, being made, and performed, in Devon & Cornwall, England “I am what you made me become!” snarls Mordred, as he confronts his father, King Arthur. How relevant that seems! Fundraising for a local film, Mordred, by a local Torbay-based team, takes on a whole new angle with the announcement of the Excalibur Film & Fantasy Convention, taking place at the Red House Hotel on Rousdown Road, Torquay, on Saturday March 19th. “Mordred” is a drama, newly written and researched by members of the South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company, a team specialising in historical and mythological drama, based in Brixham, South Devon. This convention will feature a fantastic variety of entertainment packed into this small hotel, which will be friendly for the whole family, by an amazing team of volunteers from across Devon, coming to support this fundraiser. The Torbay Troopers, and Jon Ian Dredge, local Star Wars re-enactors will be in attendance, along with professional costumier Natasha Fountain, as Disneys “Cinderella”, and many others. WyvernsTales from Exeter, will be running workshops in medieval combat, with Olly Roberts and his team putting on a full medieval re-enactment show. There will also be talks, traders stands of collectables and costume – and you can even enter a costume competition with some great prizes! Every penny raised, goes into the production, the aim of which is to gain international exposure – and hopefully work - for local actors and creative talent. The South Devon Players have an unusual raison d’etre; exemplified, in this project. The group, specialising in historical and mythological drama,
are a group of local career-orientated actors and creatives, who are unable, for various life reasons, or lack of resources, to move away to large entertainment hubs such as London, to make careers there. For many years the Players have specialised in theatre, performing locally at the Palace Theatre in Paignton, and the Edge in Brixham, but now want to bring their work to the film circuit to publicise the fantastic skills of local southwest actors and “behind the scenes” creatives across the world. The belief of the Players is that in order to find opportunities, they must first create their own. Mordred, which is finishing casting later this month, and filming in June around Devon and Cornwall, is the teams first feature film, and is already gathering international interest, with three articles in New York – based arts magazine NY Elite, and Hollywood-based film production magazine Max-It, as well as various online interviews and podcasts. The film is also supported by the only nonSouthwest England teammember, the awardwinning up-and-coming film music composer Michael Klubertanz, from Germany. Of course, all of this requires a budget – and so the team are fundraising as hard as they are rehearsing! With museum and social club talks, sponsored swims, cabaret performances, a talent show, and – the Excalibur film convention! Set in the 6th Century, across Devon and Cornwall, this two & a half hour drama stars all-local unknown Southwest talent, bringing to life Arthurian legend, in a production researched and adapted from some of the earliest Arthurian legends, exploring some of the earliest tales of Mordred, who appears varyingly in Arthurian legends, as Arthur’s nephew or illegitimate son, and how two equally honourable men came to hate one another, and that hate to lead to a disastrous war. With casting for the supporting speaking roles on February 28th 2016 (anyone interested in applying, should email southdevonplayers@gmail.com) , this project is inexorably moving ahead.
