TCDT News Volunteering Forum - March 22nd The next forum will be on Thursday 22nd March, at Brixham Rugby Club, from 9:30am – 1pm. For the panel discussion we are looking at the subject “How can we take the spirit of collaboration beyond the Volunteering Forum?” We would like to build on the fantastic spirit of collaboration we have built within the forum, and look at ways of taking it outside of the quarterly events and ensuring that spirit thrives all year round. Whether that be through informal groups, one-to-one meetings or online tools. We are looking for a few people to sit on the panel, so if you have any thoughts or feelings in this direction, or feel you would like to take part, please contact us with a few words about what your contribution could be. And remember, guest contributors get a free ticket! -Peter Stokes, Capacity Building Manager. Get in touch: Phone: 01803 212638

TCDT News Torbay Timebank Launches New Platform

The Torbay Timebank is launching a new, quicker and easier-to-use platform for time sharing. The Timebank allows people to help each other within their communities to exchange time with others. ‘I used to think time was a thief. But you give before you take. Time is a gift. Every minute. Every second’ as Alice in wonderland exclaims in the time travelling tale, the concept of timebanking offers a practical way for people to share the gift of time with each other.

Timebank users can offer their own skills and benefit from the skills of others who’ve offered theirs. The more people who contribute to a timebank by ‘depositing’ their skills, the more there’ll be for people to share. Absolutely anyone can join a timebank – from individuals and community groups to local businesses.

For every hour participants ‘deposit’ in a timebank by giving practical help and support to others, they are able to ‘withdraw’ equivalent support in time when they themselves need something doing.

Signing up is easy and free, and people can offer their own skills and talents when they want to. In return, they can access and make use of the skills of other timebank members whenever they need them.

The Torbay Community Development Trust, which runs the Torbay Timebank, has upgraded the platform used by participants, where they are able to trade skills, resources and expertise. The new platform is simpler to sign up to, easier to navigate and provides a straightforward way of exchanging time.

In the lead-up to the Timebank Launch, Community Builders from the Torbay Community Development Trust will be out and about across the Bay promoting the new Timebank platform. Photo Opportunity: Join the Torbay Community Development Trust for a Mad Hatter’s tea party with the white rabbit, to celebrate the launch of the new platform.

Theo Tanser, Timebank Coordinator, said: “Everybody has something to offer with others and we all need a little help sometimes, so the Torbay Timebank is a brilliant opportunity to combine the two. We’re hoping, as the new platform is easier to use, it will spur people to take part and use it. “As timebanking is so flexible, and as there are no limits to how often someone can use the scheme or how much they can offer to others, it really does suit everyone. Additionally, it allows those 6

already active in their neighbourhoods to record the work they’re doing (especially important for funding bids!) while enabling them to seek out the services of others when they need them.”

The new Torbay Timebank goes live on Thursday 1st February 2018 from 2-4pm. Cake cutting at 2.30pm. The launch will be at the new Torbay Community Development Trust shop opening in Fleet Walk, Torquay. The new Timebank platform will go live on Thursday 1st February and will be available at: www.torbaytogether.org.uk

TCDT News STEPS Forward bring festive cheer to retirement home Seven volunteers from STEPS Forward spent a day making handmade Christmas cards and signing them individually to be presented at a special event on 12 December. Residents of Westward’s sheltered scheme, Kenneth Court, in Shiphay were selected to receive a very special and personalised card, and the cards were presented at a festive coffee morning with mince pies and warming refreshments. STEPS Forward is a supported volunteering project, run by Torbay Community Development Trust, helping people experiencing barriers to volunteering and employment. Most of the participants are people in recovery from addiction, but also includes people with mental health problems and learning difficulties. Charlotta Gare, STEPS Forward Co-ordinator, said: “The volunteers enjoyed focussing on something so positive and feeling part of a team and in making and giving these Christmas cards, there was lots of laughter and fun”.

The focus of the project is on meaningful activity - doing things with a genuine and positive outcome - and what could be more meaningful than extending the hand of friendship during the festive season? Feeling like a valuable member of society is important to STEPS Forward volunteers, as one participant said: “It’s about time I started giving something back to the community”, and it is also important that society recognises that people who have experienced problems in the past can still be valued and important members of the community. One Kenneth Court resident was thrilled to receive his Christmas card, saying: “I will put this on my mantelpiece as it is so lovely. Thanks so much”. A Westward Spokesperson said: “We are pleased residents at one of our sheltered schemes were chosen to receive this festive cheer and thank the volunteers for their kind work.”

The volunteering team undertake regular oneoff tasks, including a recent day out trimming hedges and clearing paths at Cockington. These activities are chosen by participants, and for their latest task they decided they wanted to focus on Christmas and people who may feel lonely at this special time of year.

The coffee morning was a truly heart-warming event, showing that two groups of people who may seem poles apart can still show true festive spirit by reaching out to each other. If you would like to find out more about STEPS Forward please contact Torbay Community Development Trust on 01803 212638. 7

AWT News Torquay United Walking Football Club The Walking Football club is a fantastic opportunity for men and women over the age of fifty to take part in a kick-about in either a more relaxed pace for one night a week, and more competitive matches on other nights, which can also lead to the Walking Football league matches! Whatever pace you’re comfortable with, the club is a welcome opportunity to get out and about, get more exercise, make new friends, and take part in a more accessible level of one of the world’s most popular sports. TCDT’s own Billy Hartstein is a member of the team, so you may bump into him there! The team, supported by Torquay United Community Sports Trust, and provided with the blue kits seen in the photo above by Ageing Well Torbay (thanks to Community Builder Nina Cooper), recently held an exhibition match at Torquay United’s home turf in Plainmoor Torquay, displaying to all that not only are they are indeed a skilled team, but are all enjoying the experience as well.

Click on the photo above to view a promo film via Youtube. Please note a link to a playlist of related videos is shown at the end, which includes interviews with the club and a recording of the previously mentioned exhibition match.

Christmas Lunches Five lunches were held on Christmas Day 2017, for those of us who may be or may feel lonely and isolated, especially at Christmas. It’s estimated that almost one million older people in the UK will have spent the day alone and will have little contact with anyone over Christmas. This included a lunch at St Peter’s Centre in Chelston, where 19 people tucked into a threecourse meal. The lunch was run by volunteers who prepared the food, put on entertainment and ferry everyone to where they needed to be. Much of the food and drink were donated by local businesses, Councillors and partner agencies.

AWT News Hello Chelston, Cockington & Livermead By Tara Acton, Community Builder for Chelston, Cockington & Livermead

Hello all Welcome to 2018, hope the festivities were warm and welcoming for you all. Well any Livermead-ers will hopefully be pleased to hear I’m branching out and you’ll be seeing more of me up there now too. I’ve already come across some great things going on; Roundhill Road is a happening little place. Super friendly staff in the post office, a very community minded coop and charity shop and a brand new superb little café. The café has been taken over by 2 lovely young men, who are really trying to make a go of it. From different professional backgrounds they have wanted to start a café for a while, its ludicrously affordable great array of drinks and cakes and very chatty and friendly. They are also up for involving the community in anyway, so if you would like to come along to a coffee morning or are looking for somewhere to organise regular get togethers get in touch or pop in there. The guys will be happy to see you. Another exciting turn for me was meeting some residents around the Grenville Avenue road, they are passionate about their area and take pride in the streets. So much so that they do weekly litter picks to keep things tidy. Should anyone else also think this is a good idea and live in that vicinity (Raleigh, Davis Ave., Oxenham Green, Howard Close and Hawkins Ave.) please do get in touch and we can look at taking action on the roads together. The residents also want to see a street party in the neighbourhood around the time of the royal wedding. Again get in touch if you would like to be part of this. In mid January Chelston Workshop and Community Shed next to Chelston Manor hotel had a fabulous Christmas lunch for over 20 people celebrating how far they’ve come in 6 months. They are around for people to pop in, and/or get involved on Mondays, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:30-12:30. Beginning of January saw yet another successful meeting about the Goshen Triangle with over 25 people coming through the door, some new faces, some back for more. In all my years working in communities I have never known such a turn out and show of passion for a local green space, hats off to you all. Talked about big subjects such as residents parking permits, tree reductions, space for dogs, and space for children, growing and recycling/refuse. More plans for the overall mapping which will be collaborated ahead of the next meeting in February, watch this space for more info. Lastly, congratulations to Chelston Action Group for pulling together a very successful Christmas day lunch enjoyed by many lucky people in the community. Timebanking is taking a new look and new website, check out our facebook page for more info about this. 11

Brixham Pirate Festival needs your help setting sail Ahoy There! We’re the Brixham Pirate Festival, an annual gathering of the world’s most infamous pirates and scallywags. It’s held on and around the Harbour in the heart of this historic little fishing port at the southern end of Torbay every year, on the first Bank Holiday weekend in May. 2018 will mark 300 years since Blackbeard’s death, and 10 years of the Festival, so it’s going to be extra special! How on earth do we do it? We need your help!!! The Festival can only happen if we get enough pledges of support, some sponsors and donations. Everything raised goes to pay for the Festival; anything left over goes towards the cost of the next year’s Festival. As you might imagine, a big part of each year is spent raising funds. To find out more about helping Brixham Pirate Festival raise funds, visit the GoFundMe page to see how you can help make it happen. Click here to visit Brixham Pirate Festival’s GoFundMe. 14
