TCDT News Issue 5: January 2016

Welcome to the January edition of the Torbay Community Development Trust News. We all know that volunteers are great for organisations, but here at TCDT we understand it can be a daunting task to recruit and manage a volunteer team. To help organisations across the Bay, the Volunteer Centre is holding a number of courses in January and February which cover a broad range of topics including an introduction to volunteer management, how to promote your volunteering vacancies effectively, as well as ways to develop volunteer roles within your organisation. You will find out more about these courses and how to enrol on page 5. Other highlights form this edition include an update from the Ageing Well Torbay project, a feature on Carers Trust Phoenix, upcoming funding dates, as well as all of the usual features, such as a roundup of news and events from around Torbay. Ageing Well Evaluation

New way of working

Ageing Well Torbay has secured a new partner to help evaluate the programme.

The Torbay Community Development Trust have been asked by the newly formed Foundation Trust to find out what the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sectors have to offer.

Over 6 years Ageing Well Torbay aims to reduce isolation and loneliness in older people living in Torbay. The funding provided by BIG Lottery Ageing Better: Fulfilling Lives allows the Ageing Well Programme to test new approaches to and fund new and innovative projects to reduce isolation and loneliness. The big question faced by the programme is, “does it work?” To help answer that question Ageing Well Torbay is required by BIG Lottery to work with an independent evaluator. Between November 2015 and January 2016 Torbay Community Development Trust with the support of Torbay Council ran a competitive commissioning round. On 20 January 2016 the Ageing Well Programme Board approved the appointment of the new evaluation partner for the Ageing Well Programme. The new partner is a research unit who have extensive experience delivering social and economic policy research, specialising in evaluation with public and voluntary sector organisations across the South West and nationally. The new evaluation partner will work with Ageing Well up to the end of the programme in March 2021. The appointment is a huge step forward for Ageing Well as it will help to evidence which parts of the programme work well, why it works and what the impact is on people who are involved in the delivery of the programme.

In particular they want to know what it is we do now or what we could do in the future (with the right support) which helps prevent referrals to the NHS or admissions to hospital. Rather than an attempt to make the VCSE sectors do more for less the Foundation Trust understand that in some cases we can provide better outcomes at a better price. If you feel that your organisation does or could do work that prevents referrals or admissions the contact me to take part in a mapping and scoping exercise. Billy Hartstein 01803 212638 or billyhartstein@torbaycdt.org.uk

As with all parts of the Ageing Well programme older people’s involvement is a key feature. The new evaluators will be launching a “Citizen Evaluators” scheme. Citizen Evaluators will be people aged over 50 who live / work in Torbay and will help shape the way Ageing Well is delivered in the future. We will be telling you more about the new evaluation partner next month!

The Devon Autism Alert Card Will help police support people with autism

Torre Reversal Scheme The first part of the major scheme to reverse the flow of traffic through Torre has started.

The card is for autistic people to show others if they are upset or likely to become upset. The person shown the card should then change the way they talk to the autistic individual.

The works are expected to be completed by the end of March and will then allow vehicles more direct access to Torquay town centre.

The aim of showing the card is to defuse the potentially difficult situation and allow the autistic individual to feel safe and secure so they may become less agitated and anxious and the situation dealt with in the best way for all involved.

The first part of the scheme is taking place at the traffic signal junction of Tor Hill Road and Abbey Road, locally known as Central Church. Provision will be made to allow outbound traffic from Castle Circus to turn right into Tor Hill Road.

Who is eligible to receive an Autism Alert Card? The Autism Alert Card can be issued to individuals aged 10 or over. Devon County Council, Plymouth Council, Torbay Council, Devon & Cornwall Police and Devon Link Up support the Devon Autism Alert Card Project along with other organisations.

Between now and March further works will be undertaken at the junctions of Teignmouth Road, Upton Road (Brunswick Square), Union Street, Laburnham Row and Union Street. Traffic flow will be finally reversed in Union Street prior to the forthcoming Spring.

The Autism Alert Card is free, plastic and credit card sized and may be carried by an autistic individual to identify that they are on the autistic spectrum.

Funding Opportunities

From Little Acorns… by Bob Jope Visiting the Acorn Centre recently got me thinking about the old cliché, ‘From little acorns…’ Like so many, it’s a cliché because it’s true – and true of so many of our voluntary groups that began as localised individual initiatives and blossomed into large scale, full time projects. Paignton’s CentrePeace, for example, began just a few years ago when a small group of concerned local people decided to do what they could for people in their community in need. Similarly, Preston’s Kerensa at the Living Waters Church got off the ground when a group of like-minded people responded to a local need and started up what’s now an always well-attended fortnightly coffee and cake morning for people experiencing bereavement. Nigel Williams founded Anode in Paignton because he was determined to do something about what he saw all around him. Anode is a Charity that helps individuals through challenging times and aims to build a foundation, they say, that encourages ‘self-belief, independence and responsibility’. Their motto is ‘Changing Lives, Giving a Voice and Fighting Poverty’ and they’re passionate about helping out where needed. ‘Changing Lives, Giving a Voice and Fighting Poverty’

Making real changes in people’s lives. Norman MacNamara’s amazingly impactful Purple Angel Dementia Awareness campaign began four years ago to raise awareness of this life-traumatising condition and with the aim of making Torbay the world’s first ‘dementia-friendly’ community. Since those early days when the steering group I joined comprised a handful of people in Norrm’s front room, the campaign has gone first nation-wide and now international, with Purple Angel ambassadors all across the globe. ‘This is a wonderful project benefiting the local community”

Next Year will see the World Rock Against Dementia Day on March 16th happening all around the world, with a major event at the Riviera Centre. Look out for more news in the New Year! More locally, Mandy Woodard has set up a Read Easy group in Torbay, recruiting, training and allocating volunteers to give free tuition to adults who struggle with reading (lacking confidence with reading or unable to read at all). What makes this project unique is that it offers confidential one-toone tuition and gives people the opportunity to work in private and at their own pace. The shocking truth is that one in twenty adults in this country has never learned to read. As adults, they often feel ashamed, and go to great lengths to hide their lack of understanding. They might say, ‘Oh I’ve forgotten my

glasses, would you read this for me please?’ Or, they might ask a friend, ‘Would you help me fill in a form. I hate forms, they make me nervous.’ The Read Easy scheme teaches adults to read, not in a class, but one-to-one. Everyone who wants to learn has their own individual reading coach, meaning that learning progresses at the reader’s own pace and, importantly too, the whole process remains confidential. As Chair of the Torbay branch of Read Easy, Mandy says, ‘This is a wonderful project benefiting the local community by providing adults who are poor readers or unable to read at all the opportunity to meet up with a local volunteer two or three times a week to learn to read on a one to one basis in chosen venues across Torquay and Paignton.’ Mandy tell us that now the project has recruited a satisfactory number of coaches for the present time, their focus is switching to finding people who want to learn to read. ‘There is no set way of people getting to us,’ she says, ‘they can self-refer, be referred by an organisation or (with their consent) be recommended to us by family, friends or colleagues. ‘ ‘Starting the conversation about Read Easy Torbay,’ she adds, ‘should raise our profile, making people aware of our project and, we hope, helping us reach potential readers. So, if anyone knows of an adult living in Torquay or Paignton that would benefit from our project, they can get in touch with our Coordinator, Jackie, on 07593 223600 or Jackie@readeasy.org.uk.

New Community Builders Join the team! Following a successful recruitment process in December we have 5 new neighbourhood community builders starting this month which will take us to our full complement of place based builders under the Ageing Well Programme. Marianne Parker will be based in Wellswood. We met Marianne via our Community Builder in Preston when she was working as a relief beach manager for a season because she has always wanted to hire out deckchairs! Marianne is a performing arts teacher and has worked in secondary, primary and special needs schools. Cassie Fielding will be in the TCDT office on Monday and will be based with Victoria in Brixham. She is an afterschool club supervisor and vegan baker. She met Victoria and loved the idea of community building. Suzie Slattery who will cover Churston, Galmpton and Broadsands, going into Goodrington, Roselands and Hookhills. Suzie is a musician, healer and mobile hairdresser and has performed at Torbay Soup and Ageing Well events. Tara Simpson will be working 3 days a week. Tara is one of Theo’s Community Connectors and plays a very active role at the Windmill Centre. She will be covering Shiphay/Willows/Chelston/Cockington with‌ Tara Acton who is working 2 days a week. Tara currently works for Play Torbay, is a Forest School Leader and was involved in the Ageing Well Festival.

Full English anyone?….Community cafes, the hidden gems in our community. By Theo Tanser, Community Builder The Breakfast Club at the Windmill, the coffee bar at the Acorn and the Catch up Café at the Medway centre, all offer a place to meet friends, enjoy a very good value breakfast or lunch, or just a cuppa coffee! The Catch up Café run by local people who volunteer their time to provide a fantastic café offering breakfast or lunch for under £2.50 from 9.30-2pm on Wednesdays. With the added bonus of a table top sale where everything is 50p and a weekly raffle. Over the last year they have raised over £700 which goes back into the community. In December they put on a Christmas party for local families and donated £100 each to 1st Boy Scouts group and Watcombe Wanderers. Future plans include a trip out to the donkey sanctuary and an Easter party for children. The café is always busy, and there is always a warm welcome. It is a great place to meet people. New volunteers always welcome too. The Breakfast Club at the Windmill is on Tuesday mornings from 9-11 and provides a full English for £2 child’s breakfast for £1 with as much tea and coffee as you can drink! The club is open to everyone and many families, single people and men working in the area are regular customers. Maureen says “ I have a

good team of volunteers working in the kitchen, all have food safety certificates and like a good song, you have to have a good voice to work in my kitchen!” All money raised goes to the Windmill Kitchen fund which helps to provide kitchen equipment for the centre. The kitchen is an important asset to the community centre as many events and activities revolve around it. They also have charity support from ASDA who help to supply some of the food and Charity rep, Rachel also helps in the kitchen at busy times. Alongside the breakfast club there is also the foodbank and the Timebank, so it is a busy place to be on a Tuesday morning. The Acorn Centre is opening its new state of the art coffee bar called the Pop in Cafe. Currently open on Mon Wed and Fri from 4pm -9pm as part of the youth club, serving real coffee, tea, shmoo milkshakes, toasted sandwiches, cheesy chips and paninis. Prices are kept low and there is a loyalty card system available. The café is run by volunteers and is starting slowly but have plans to open for a couple of hours every morning, so that parents can drop in after the school run for a coffee and a natter and workpeople from Tor 2 can pop in for a break. All profits made will go back into the Acorn centre. They are looking for more volunteers so if you fancy some work experience as a barista, then here is the opportunity! Contact Marilyn for more details of training.

Call out for website help! Community Builder Nina Cooper says:

“I have a local community centre in my area that could do with some help. They need assistance with creating a website to advertise all the events that happen every week. If you could help with a basic site they would be very grateful. They no longer receive any funding from the council so need help from local community members to keep this centre running. Please call Nina on 07929335915 if you can help. Thank you”

restrictive circumstances, whatever they might be. It might be about building their confidence, pursuing a hobby, making time for them, overcoming a practical issue i.e transport or helping them to engage in a hobby or social group. One of the biggest issues we have found for an isolated Carer is loneliness and having a befriender to get out and about with can make a huge difference, someone to talk to and socialise with. Goals are usually identified as the circles are developing and an action plan is put in place to support the Carer to reach positive outcomes.
