Volunteer, Ron Hall officially unveils the certificate

VCQA status awarded to Volunteer Centre Torbay In recognition of high quality service, Volunteer Centre Torbay has been awarded NCVO Accreditation status, in area first for the Bay. Volunteers and staff at Torbay Community Development Trust were celebrating last week with an official unveiling ceremony of their VCQA certificate. The Volunteer Centre Quality Accreditation was awarded to Volunteer Centre Torbay, which is part of the Torbay Community Development Trust, by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. This is the first time this award has been given to an organisation within Brixham, Paignton or Torquay. Volunteer Centre Torbay were awarded the accreditation in recognition of their work in representing the voice of volunteering and developing volunteering opportunities, as well as for their approach to Good Practice. Assessors from the

National Council for Voluntary Organisations were highly impressed by the amount achieved by the organisation during the past 9 months of operation. Capacity Building Manager, Peter Stokes says “It is fantastic news for Torbay to have an accredited Volunteer Centre. A lot of hard work went into achieving the standard, not just among the staff and volunteers at Torbay Community Development Trust, but also within our member organisations. Hopefully this will be just the start of the process and Volunteer Centre Torbay will go from strength to strength, meaning an ever improving experience for volunteers and organisations that engage volunteers.

Community Partnership

Torre & Upton Community Partnership have been working on a very special project at the coach station on Lymington Road. The photos sent through by Margaret Forbes-Hamilton show the amazing transformation over the past year, through a combination of work by the Community Partnership, pupils from Torre Academy and local residents. The project gratefully received donations of plants from both Otter Nurseries and local residents. They also received financial support from the Community Partnership and Friends of Upton Park. Margaret would like to say a “thank you” to everyone involved, and continues “long may the fly tippers stay away!”

THE HAVEN... New season Update from Paula Mayer The HAVEN has had unexpectedly to be closed for a number of weeks over the early summer due amongst other things to an acute Staffing Shortage through accident, illness and other factors during my own absence in PERU. The time has been used profitably, however, by stalwart volunteers for a major makeover so the good news is that we plan to reopen on 1st AUGUST, all freshly painted and shipshape and with a few new structures in place. We may initially only be able to open most days until 2.00 rather than 5 until we recruit a few more volunteers to increase staffing levels but we shall be offering the same welcome and respite, refreshment and signposting, telephone and internet and showering facilities,a listening ear, food and clothing supplies as ever, Do drop in and visit us see how we use your support and request help if you need to and if you should be interested in Volunteering please contact us on 558727 or 07714151901 to find out more.

Call our for Volunteers The Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are calling out for volunteers to work in the Visitor Centre at Cockington Country Park. The role is a perfect fit for people who: • Enjoys meeting new people

• Are enthusiastic and friendly • Flexible and able to work under their own initiative • Has some knowledge of the local area • Likes working as part of a team • Has a responsible attitude • Has an enthusiasm and passion for the work of the Trust • Has good communication skills If you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer and helping the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust look after Torbay’s special green spaces you can contact them in the following ways: Email: info@countryside-trust.org.uk Telephone: 01803 520022 You can also download a registration form from the volunteering pages on their website: www.countryside-trust.org.uk

News from the Bay

Call out for Volunteers! People from the local community are being invited to get involved with a major international conference coming to Torbay in September. The 7th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks, taking placing at the Riviera International Centre in September, will see up to 1000 delegates visiting Torbay from over 50 countries worldwide. Running from Tuesday 27 – Friday 30 September, the main conference takes place at the Riviera International Conference Centre (RICC), with break out meetings and events at Torre Abbey Historic House, Occombe Farm, The Cary Arms and the Imperial Hotel. Field trips have been arranged for delegates to visit key sites throughout the Bay. The delegates will visit a number of locations including Kents Cavern, Hope’s Nose, Cockington Manor, Torquay Museum and Brixham Museum and many more. Gordon Oliver, Elected Mayor of Torbay, said: “The conference is a major global event, which takes place every two years, is coming to Great Britain for the first time and I’m proud that Torbay will be welcoming visitors from all over the world to the beautiful English Riviera. “This is a great opportunity for local people who are interested to find out more about the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, the place where we live, and to help us give the warmest of welcomes to these important visitors to the Bay. The conference is sure to offer a rewarding and fascinating experience to volunteers and delegates alike.” Nick Powe, owner of Kents Cavern and Chairman of the conference board, said: “The Global Geoparks conference will offer an exciting opportunity for volunteers to discover more about this global agenda, and share in the experience our visiting

delegates have of Torbay. We would particularly welcome interest from people with local knowledge who can act as guides and hosts on the field trip coaches. Whether you have a specialist interest in tourism, local culture, heritage, geology or just want to be part of it, this will be an exciting opportunity to become involved in an event of global importance.” Conference Director, David Randall, said: “We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in helping out at the conference, whether they can commit to a little time or even the entire event. Opportunities include welcoming and registering delegates when they arrive, helping out at the Riviera International Centre and accompanying delegates on field trips to sites of cultural, historical and geological interest throughout the Bay. “Please help to make this event another success for the English Riviera. We’ll make sure you take away some mementos of the conference as well as hopefully some new friends and fond memories!” The conference organisers would also welcome volunteers who have conversational languages skills, particularly in Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Portuguese and French. Anyone who is interested in helping out can attend a Volunteer Recruitment Fair for the conference taking place 6.30pm on Monday 25 July at Kents Cavern to find out more, or register your interest on the website www.GGN2016.com/volunteer Follow @GGN2016 on twitter or find GGN2016 on Facebook for latest news about the conference.

Not to be missed! A date for your diary: Working collaboratively with a number of organisations who work with, or on half of, children and young people living in the Bay we are pleased to tell you about an exciting opportunity happening in October. Geese Theatre will be running a full day, interactive theatre and workshop production at the Edge, on 7 October in Brixham. Geese Theatre Company is a team of actors and group workers who present interactive drama and has developed a strong reputation for innovative work with marginalised and vulnerable people. Liaising closely with professionals and volunteers who work with children and young people, Geese uses drama and theatre to encourage individuals to examine their own behaviour as a catalyst for promoting personal development and change. Geese is widely acknowledged as being one of the key organisations in the UK championing the role of the arts with socially excluded groups. Most recently the company has twice been awarded the ‘Arts and Health’ award by the Royal Society for Public Health. Barbara Morris, a Local Children Safeguarding Board training Officer who commissioned some training from Geese earlier this year reported: “I was very impressed with Geese Theatre Company from my first contact with them through to the excellent production. Their attention to detail and willingness to interpret the message we were trying to convey was excellent. They managed to engage the audience using a style which was both entertaining and educational. I would definitely recommend them to other organisations.” - Barbara Morris, LSCB Training & Development Officer, North Tyneside Council More information and booking form will be available shortly

Feature PAIGNTON SING-ALONG GROUP (funded by Sing for your Life charity) The Þrst birthday of the singalong group in the Torbay community took place on Wednesday June 1st 2016, 2pm - 3.30pm in the Youth Hut (we are all young at heart!!) behind St PaulÕs Church, Torquay Rd, Preston, Paignton. It is a group that is being funded by the charity Sing for your Life, which promotes community singing as a therapeutic activity. Not only was it the 1st Birthday of the group, but it was also the 84th Birthday of twins June and Sheila, so it was cake and Happy Birthdays all round. When asked for a favourite song, they requested the well-known Beatles song ÔWhen IÕm 84ÕÉ. which is what everyone sang in the chorus instead of ÔWhen IÕm 64Õ.

As well as singing there was plenty of fun, laughter, chat, percussion instruments and movements to the music. At the end of the session some people wrote comments which include: ÒSo upliftingÓ, ÒMost enjoyableÓ, Very relaxingÓ, ÒMusic is the spice of lifeÓ, ÒA jolly happy groupÓ, ÒMakes you feel betterÓ, ÒVery friendly and lots of funÓ.
