Intergenerational Rhino Project

really was a cross generational session. The Rhino was divided into sections and people took on painting different parts with acrylic paint. The Rhino was completed the following week and then given 2 coats of varnish. Last week we had an unveiling and naming event at the

Theo tanser The Rhino has been named Shamwari, which means ‘my friend’ in many south African languages. The name was chosen by the father of one of the young people who painted the Rhino and who was South African! Background: The Rhino was applied for by the Older Citizens Forum, and they wanted a group of young people to work with some older people in collaboration. Project Central (a LGBT group for young people, run by Lorrie Lane and George Travers) stepped up and were interested in making designs and painting the Rhino. The designs were done at one of their weekly group meetings and lots of talk about using the rainbow as it is the gay emblem. Then we all got together at the Windmill Centre for an afternoon of painting, we had about 6 young people from Project Central plus 4 local older people plus some children who wanted to join in, so it

“this has been the best day ever”.

The big, full size Rhinos will be outside on concrete plinths and the small ones like ours will be inside a public building. We do not know the venues yet. They will be on show from July to end of August, then will go back to the zoo for a final display. After that the groups will have them back and they can either auction them, display them, repaint them etc. This will be decided by the Older Citizens Forum.

My role as a Community Builder was to guide the artistic windmill with some of the young people, their parents and element of the project, and invite and encourage older family and some of the older people who took part and were people to be involved. keen to see the finished Rhino. It was a lovely project to be involved in and the highlight The Rhino was delivered back for me was the interaction to the Zoo yesterday and now between the generations, the stands in a barn with many other painted Rhinos. The Zoo conversation this inspired. One will place the Rhino in a public lady said to me “this has been the best day ever”. place where everyone can see it and people will be able to go on a Rhino trail around the bay spotting Rhinos as they go.

See a video of Shamwari being painted on our YouTube Channel.

Commmunity Builders are FAB. Flashmobs Across the Bay! Marianne Parker We are now well underway with our Flashmobs Across the Bay over the summer. We are dancing to Dancing Queen by Abha in Paignton, Brixham and Torquay in June, July and August. It’s a chance to get together and have some fun rehearsing and dancing. A ‘spontaneous’ moment of joy in a potentially mundane day! The first two Flashmobs in Paignton this weekend were enjoyed by dancers and spectators alike with lots of interest in our work and in taking part in future flashmobs! They took place in Victoria Street at 2pm and on Paignton Green at 2.30pm. The next flashmob is in Brixham by the harbour in July. This will be followed by four in Torquay in August - Union Square, near the Harbour, Meadfoot Beach and Babbacombe Downs. There are two rehearsals for each flashmob and a celebratory event in that neighbourhood to follow. Why not come and join us? It’s fun, friendly and is keeping us all fit!. For details of rehearsals and flashmobs please email marianneparker@torbaycdt.org. uk or call 07469660875

Paignton Town Centre Timebank News Sheila rang me and wanted to join the Timebank so that she could develop a new skill in Knitting because she wanted to knit her husband a jumper for Christmas. I didn’t have anyone in my Timebank to do that and so I contacted Robbie from Blatchcombe and a week later Sheila was being taught how to knit her jumper by Robbie who is a knitting extraordinaire, she has leant me a heart shaped pattern too and is going to be teaching me how to make bunting. Robbie is part of a craft group that meets at Great Parks and Sheila has been looking for groups to join and now she has met Robbie plans to go along soon. Sheila was offering to teach people shorthand because she doesn’t want the skill to be lost, I happened to mention this to a new Timebank recruit, Lynn who was really excited by it and

wanted to take Sheila up on this offer because she attends a lot of meetings with the Hospital in Exeter where she volunteers, working with Doctors to ensure that the communication between Doctors and Patients is clearer. Sheila met with Lynn at Paignton Library where she spent an hour and a half learning the beginnings of Shorthand. Through conversation Sheila and Lynn found out they were from the same part of the world and they had quite a lot in common because Lynn is a knitter too! Sheila told Lynn about the Lunch club she was attending on the following Wednesday on her own and so Lynn decided to go along with her. I then mentioned to Lynn about a young girl named Annabelle from Brixham who was joining the Timebank and wanted to be a journalist, I rang Annabelle and asked if she wanted to learn Shorthand and she did and so Annabelle is meeting Sheila to learn Shorthand. The funny thing is Annabelle wants to learn to knit!!

New lunch club for Paignton After speaking to a group of about 30 older people who used to attend the Day Centre opposite Victoria Park, we found that there was a desire to have a Lunch Club in Paignton. Now there are already Lunch clubs at Great Parks Community Centre and at the Salvation Army both on a Wednesday, however the people we spoke to didn’t want to go to these, Great Parks was too far and it was difficult to get to the Salvation Army lunch. Anyone in Paignton will have realised that the Lime Tree pub, once having a certain reputation, had been redecorated and had new managers. Through reading an article I found out that Nicole and James were really keen to provide a space that could be enjoyed by the whole community. I rang Age UK and asked why there weren’t any lunch clubs in Paignton seeing as the one in Babbacombe was so popular. Carole Lemming from Age UK was really helpful and explained that there used to be Lunch clubs but for various reasons they had stopped working. So bearing the advice in mind I approached the Lime Tree about having a Lunch Club there, and they said Yes! They could offer two courses for £7. I got back in touch with Age UK and Carole Lemming said that she had a volunteer who would be able to help run the club, she is called Ann. So between Carole, Ann and myself we advertised the Lunch Club and on 15th June we had our Launch. 22 people came along and the great thing was that some of them hadn’t seen each other in two years since the last Lunch Club. We will be running the Lunch Club every two weeks and the next Lunch Club will be on the 29th June 12 – 2.30.

Your Ageing Well Update by Christine Durrant Hello everyone,

It is beautifully sunny as I write and I am looking forward to joining ‘Yoga Together’ down at Preston Beach every Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30am throughout the summer starting 6th July. No need to book as this is just a friendly group who are supporting each other to ‘Stretch for Life’. Did you know that you can join Bay Walks and enjoy discovering the area with a walk leader? It is free and a wonderful way to make new friends and get healthy at the same time. The walks vary in length from 30 to 90 minutes and are mostly on the flat. To find out more call 0300 456 1006 (charged at local rate) or visit www.walkingforhealth.org.uk Many activities stop during July and August but the Sing for your Life Group is still going strong and will be meeting on the first Wednesday of the month every month. I was lucky enough to celebrate their first anniversary with them in June. It is such a friendly group, do give it a try. There is no audition and it is not a choir just a good old fashioned sing-along! The Tuesday and Wednesday Clubs at Occombe Farm Cafe, as well as the coffee mornings, lunch, pool afternoons and skittles at the Old Manor Pub will also continue throughout the summer. For details of these please see the box on page 29. ‘Pa’rants’, the new support group for parents of children with eating disorders or other difficulties has already proved very helpful to those who have come. It is tremendous to see the relief that comes when you meet someone else who is going through similar stuff, being able to share and learn. These evenings will be on the first and third Fridays at Euphoria Gallery from 7:00pm till about 9:30pm. To find out more please contact me. Despite having two left feet I was persuaded to try line dancing in June. I was assured that Barbara, the teacher, was gentle – mistakes are allowed and laughed about. So with not a

little trepidation I got onto the dance floor at the Preston Conservative Club on a Tuesday evening at 7:00pm along with about 18 others and learned my first line dance. Barbara walked us through in a way which was easy to follow and a lot of fun. ‘ It will be a bit quicker with the music’ she said with a smile. It was, but I got the hang of it and although I missed some of the steps out, I did manage to face the same way as everyone else when we did our turns. Everyone was very supportive and friendly. It was good to see some men joining in the fun. For more information, please contact Barbara on 01803 213078. Barbara also told me about Riviera Sound who meet on a Thursday night from 7:15pm till 10:00pm at Watcombe Primary School, Moor Lane Torquay TQ2 8NU. This is a more serious singing group who sing acapella. You need to be able to sing in four-part harmony so they do ask you to audition. They are holding open auditions on 7th July at 7:30pm at the school. If you have never been to Cockington for their outdoor theatre performances I would encourage you to go. Illyria are performing ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ on Friday 29th July and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ on Monday 29th August. Both will be family entertainment and well worth the effort. Take a picnic, something to sit on and warm blankets to wrap up after the sun goes down as it does get chilly. It is always a magical experience.

The Ageing Well Project aims to reduce isolation among older people. If you know of anyone who would benefit from our help please do get in touch. You can contact me via email christinedurrant@torbaycdt.org.uk or on my work phone 07469 660887. I look forward to hearing from you.
