EXECUTIVE TEAM STATEMENTS “Putting the Unity in Community” Unity, Respect, Advocacy Leadership is bringing the student body together; not advocating for singular interests. We--as Lane students--should be celebrated for our differences. As your President and Vice President we intend to do just that. Together with your help we will lobby for student interests and ensure that students are part of the college’s major decision-making processes. Together, we have experience working on behalf of students: fighting the administration over the rising cost of tuition, lobbying our legislators to make college more affordable, ensuring that students of marginalized identities are represented, and increasing the voice that students have. Respect is a two way street and it is time that students were treated with the respect that they deserve. So, to this end we will: 1. Increase Student Outreach -- Make student representatives more available to the students. We will hold regular events with students and clubs to engage and create community. 2. Diversity/Inclusivity -- Inclusivity is our strength and we need to be cognizant of the diverse backgrounds, education, family, and beliefs of the student body; to ensure that each student’s voice matters and they are afforded the respect they deserve. 3. Ensure Fiscal Responsibility -- Lane Community College has increased tuition year over year, and by evaluating the publically published budgets and being a part of the budgetary cycle; we will take part in making sure that students and their interests are represented in financial decisions. 4. Increase Transparency -- Through regularly published newsletters that go out to each of the students we can inform the student body of what we--and other organizations--do on campus. No important decisions should be made behind closed doors. This is your college, and we want to ensure that you have a voice in everything that goes on here. Whether through your representatives, advisors, or by forging a new path we can solve the issues that the student body is faced with. Bryant Everett -- Current Chief of Staff in ASLCCSG. Bryant is dual-majored in biochemistry and pre-med; she is a non-traditional student who has returned to college after working in management for more than 10 years for a Fortune 500 company. Leila Jebara -- Current Vice President of the Muslim Students Association and International Programs Peer Mentor. Leila is majoring in microbiology with an intent to go into oncological (cancer) research. 4

SENATE CANDIDATES Ahmad Alkadi: He/Him Course Major: Business Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: BA 101 1 Interesting Fact about Ahmad is: “I love people” “ My name is Ahmad AlKadi, I’m currently 19 years old but I’m turning 20 in September. I have been a student at Lane Community College since 2017. I am a business major and I intend on transferring to the University of Oregon once I finish my requirements. I am originally from Saudi Arabia and as such I am an international student here in LCC. Three of my friends have been a part of the ASLCCSG chapter in the 2018-19 academic year and I have had the opportunity to hear many of their stories, initiatives and the things that they have been involved within their role as senators. I realized that through their role as senators that there was a lot they could do. As someone who comes from Saudi Arabia, I have been exposed to several micro aggressions and outright racism; I’m hoping that through becoming a senate, I will not only have the chance to connect with people and break the cultural barrier, but also stand for others like me who face the same obstacles. “ –Ahmad AlKadi

I moved back to Oregon in January 2017. Since then I have been working as a criminal defense investigator for an attorney’s office in town. I have been in school since March 2018 at Lane community college. I am studying criminal justice and once I finish my Associates and that I plan on going to the University of Oregon. My ultimate goal is to complete law school. After that eventually get into politics. I would love to be more involved with my school and learn more about what it takes to keep it going. Michael Gillette: He/Him Course Major: Linguistics Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Advanced Public Speaking (COMM221) 1 interesting fact about Michael is: “I am fluent in 3 different languages, and conversational in even more!” “Hello, students of LCC, My name is Michael Gillette, and I am running for a second year as senator and your student representative on campus. Much like this last year, I want my focus to be on the issues students are having on campus. I want your voices to be heard. We all are coming from different places, and we are all aspiring for different pursuits of knowledge. Yet, we are all here. I want to continue the push for both respect and inclusivity both between students and to the students from the college itself. We are all working hard to be the best we can be as students, and I believe this can be better accomplished if we remember to help one another when there is that need. This first year as your senator gave me a lot of experience that I want to apply for this upcoming year. There is still a lot of work to be done, and I am determined to see things happen that will enrich the learning experience here on campus. I want to see us all working together to achieve our dreams. Together.” –Michael Gillette

Valerie Hoffman: She/Her Course Major: Game Design Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Game Design with Paul Wilkins 1 interesting fact about Valerie is: “I can match any country with its flag” “Hello all this is Valerie Hoffman. I’m currently a senator in the student government but I hope to continue the work that I’ve done in the following term. Me and fellow senators have sponsored many events and funding requests for the benefit of students here at Lane and I want to keep doing that in the future as well as implement some of my own ideas. Mostly that would mean pushing for a space on campus for students to talk about union organization and labor issues. Approximately five percent of people under the age of 25 are represented by a union so I consider this a pressing issue and a call to have a union space for working students. If this interest you support me in senate or contact me at valerie.hoffman98@gmail.com” –Valerie Hoffman

Ama Wayne: She/Her ; They/Them Course Major: Psychology Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Concert Choir or Music Fundamentals 1 interesting fact about Ama is: “I aspire to go into the professional world of psychology either as a music therapist or something with animal behavior” “As a student representative for Lane Community College, I will strive to help make sure that the college at large is an inclusive and safe place for all that attend. It is my goal to represent and advocate for under represented groups on this campus, which includes students of color, students with disabilities, LGBT community, and many more. I want to ensure that this school is not just a place where people come to learn, but also a place to get involved with various clubs, and student groups, and that will be one of my many goals, to bring awareness and help students to find what it is they are interested in and make those connections.” –Ama Wayne 8

Alexandria Jackson: She/Her Course Major: Undeclared / Exploratory Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Post-Racial America: Challenges and Opportunities 1 interesting fact about Alexandria is: “I have small ears!” “I solely feel that the world of education is a place meant to inspire countless students and teachers of the like. It is a world where new ideas thrive, where people of different backgrounds are able to come together and reflect on each other’s experiences. Education is not just about learning; it is about transcending one’s current state of mind, to better themselves not only for the sake of their future, but for the future of their society and humanity alike. Prior to reaching those goals however, students must find themselves in a place that seeks to serve them in their every need. Often, I hear countless stories regarding student bodies and those who oversee them. Most unfortunately, many of these stories end in a fashion that tells horrors of how an institution has thrown students under the bus. This serves to show that student governments are a critical must in schools across the nation. Yet, once these student governments form, one may be tempted to ask the following: “What can we do in order to improve our organization?” Although I am new to Lane Community College, I feel that I have already fallen in love with the campus. I see the way in which students and teachers aid in serving their community, and I cannot help but feel immense appreciation for that fact. Already, I have become quite active and involved on campus with groups such as the Black Student Union. Upon arriving to Lane, my first intention was to seek out the BSU community, as I had never been a part of one before. With true sincerity, I say that I am so thankful to have the members of the BSU in my life. They do feel like family to me, and in each meeting my psyche is met with feelings of rejuvenation and inspiration. I heartily volunteered at NASA’S Pow Wow, and the experience of that event was something mystical. I truly hope to become part of other organizations within Lane Community College during my time here. Of course, by now you know that I hold interest in becoming a dedicated member of the ASLCCSG. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always felt that a big part of my purpose on this Earth is to help others to the best of my ability. In education (during my high school years), I have only ever had the ability to work with other students as an academic peer tutor. I loved every minute of helping my peers. Making connections with and checking in on how I could better support them in their studies are just a couple of the many things I did for my peers. I see that now I have the opportunity to go further in serving my peers for their greater good. In running for the position of a Senator at the ASLCCSG, it is my wish to provide the students who attend Lane Community College with as much educational support and outreach that I could offer. I understand that the seat of a senator is one of critical importance to the development of Student Government, along with the development of campus life. It is not to be taken lightly. Regarding the question, “what can we do in order to improve our organization?”: If I am given the opportunity to do so, I am confident in my ability to serve as a senator of the ASLCCSG.” –Alexandria Jackson

Samantha Mosley: She/Her Course Major: Political Science Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Co-op Political Science 1 interesting fact about Samantha is: “I’m funny and open minded with a boss mentality” “ Hi, everyone my name is Samantha Mosley I’m a student of color and I also go to LCC full-time. Also, am finishing my 1st year this term. A little more about me is that I’m an easy person to talk to and I love to laugh, but don’t get it twisted I get the job done accurately and under pressure. Once I see a problem I figure out how to fix it. I’m currently in the organizations called BSU, and also OSAC and I have been able to have a few opportunities to speak on behalf of ALL students for higher education issues. I love being able to make a change in a good way that can benefit everyone. My voice has made a big impacted at the Capitol already. I’ve sat down with Legislators, Senators, and House of Representatives about the issues we all face. I want to continue to be your voice because I know it matters, each and every one of our voice matters. We all, in the end, want to better our lives so we can better the community. Whether you major in Healthcare, Education, Arts, Engineer, Human Resources, Computer software, etc we all have skills as a whole to make this world a better place so please consider me to keep representing you, and if this no when this happens I won’t let you down. I’m a firm believer of hard work and nothing in life is free you have to work for everything you want. So please let me work for you. I appreciate you taking the time and considering my offer to you. Thank you so much I know If and when I get this position I won’t lose sight of your voice and what you hold to importance. Yours truly, Samantha Mosley “It is not what you can do for me, but what I can do for the people.” “ –Samantha Mosely

Aime Nacoulma: He/Him Course Major: Engineering Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Math/Physics 1 interesting fact about Aime is: “I like being around people who have different perspectives on life; it allows me to stay away from close mindedness” “Dear Students of Lane Community College, Coming from a small and decent country located in West Africa, Burkina Faso, I am among the lucky the ones who have realized their dreams to study here, the United State of America. Currently known as Aime Nacoulma, I am a full time student at Lane Community College in Engineering, and will embrace the workforce as a Civil Engineer. Although I battled to reach this point of my life, I am grateful and give credits to the people who have lifted my voice and have had my back when my words weren’t enough. Today, I am running to represent your voice at the table of ASLCCSG as your Student Senator. For the past mandate 2018-2019, I was honored to occupy seat 5 and fulfil the primary duties that came along. As a team, we always came together to make sure your voices were heard. I also volunteered at the Food Pantry and helped for your Welcome or Final Fuel Station. Besides representing the Student Body at the Faculty Council meetings, I attended the Ways and Means Committee Conference in Portland in order to join forces with students from different colleges/universities and request for more funding. Even though these are just few of the activities I did, I believe there is still a room for improvement, and I will be able to advocate for you thanks to your vote. “ –Aime Nacoulma

Shana Weiland: He/Him Course Major: Biology Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: WR241 with Michael MacDonald 1 interesting fact about Shana is: “There are no pants in my campaign picture” “Hello students of Lane, My name is Shana Santry-Weiland and I want to be a senator representing each of you at the senate meetings of the student government during the 2019 – 2020 school year. I have been working with the student government during the 2018-2019 school year. I was elected as a senator in the spring election of 2018, I transferred to a staff position (Chief of Staff), and then continued as a volunteer committee chair after that. I believe in representing the students here, including the students that were like me during my first year who don’t pay attention to the government at all. I want to see more of the student activity fee paid by each student to be spent in efforts to benefit the students here on our campus. I also want to represent the students that need stalwart voices in addition to those who don’t. In other words, just because you don’t care what the student government is doing doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be working for you just as much as it works for those who are involved. Even if you don’t vote for me, I appreciate you taking the time to vote during these elections. The more voices we have involved, the better we can properly represent the students here at LCC.”— Shana Weiland

SAFC CANDIDATES STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE CANDIDATES Laney Baehler: She/ Her Course Major: Zoology Favorite class taken at Lane Community College: Atmospheric Science and Climate Change 1 Interesting fact about Laney is: “I keep several fish tanks as a hobby called aquascaping. It focuses on the art of the aquariums of fish, décor and plants that can be put together” “I was one of the members who voted in the Student Activity Fee Committee this year, and I wish to be apart of the process next year to ensure efficiency. I believe that each group should be represented to the best of the campuses ability because each club is an opportunity to learn and grow as students, and as people. Students at LCC deserve a chance to experience other cultures and activities, and our main way of reaching out to students is through clubs. Each club is evidence of the hard work, passion, and commitment from the students running them and they deserve to be recognized for the sense of community and the friendships they provide. Students should have every opportunity to learn, and supporting our clubs is one way that we can help guarantee success. That is why I am running to be a SAFC Student Representative.”—Laney Baehler

Not only does the price point of school keep many underprivileged people from gaining an education, it keeps those who can make it into college closer to poverty. My name is Laura Leader and I am running to be a

student representative on the Student Activity Fee Committee (SAFC). I am running because I believe that a key role of the SAFC is to ensure that the many important organizations on campus receive the funding that they need to provide students with all of the specialized services that they offer. I am a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am a theatre kid, I am a feminist, and I believe in equal opportunity. Lane Community College is the 5th college that I have attended, so I believe that I can provide a unique perspective on how campuses function around the country.
