Twins go through life as Red Raiders together By HAILEY WALTER Staff Writer

As she walks across the Texas Tech campus to her next class, Rachel Merino gets a wave from a professor she has never had in class or seen. The sophomore information technology major is unsure who the stranger is and keeps walking. The next day in class, the same professor asks why Rachel did not return the greeting the day before. “Oh, that was my twin sister, Rachel,” Rachel’s identical twin sister, Sarah Merino, a sophomore marketing major at Tech, said. A s identical twin sisters on a college campus, Rachel and Sarah are accustomed to students and professors getting the two confused. “We both work on campus in

hospitality,” Rachel Merino said. “Sometimes people will ask us, ‘Do you work two jobs?’” For the sisters of Carrollton, besides the occasional mix up, college life is not that different. Both women

have their own separate majors and career ambitions, and both made the agreement they would make their own decisions regarding where they each would attend college. “Tech was on both of our radars because our parents went here,” Rachel Merino said. “We visited campus, and I really liked the campus, and I was impressed by the business and honors

colleges, which was something I was looking into.” Just because the women are identical does not mean they are not independent. Their freshman

year of college, the sisters chose not to live together in the dorms. “We wanted to branch out, since we share a room at home,” Rachel Merino said. “This year we decided to be roommates again, along with two other people, and it’s been really nice because I get to see Sarah a little more often.” Sarah Merino describes their relationship as best friends who are also related, and the biggest positive of being a twin is the support system, especially freshman year, when college was new. “It was sort of nice to have a piece of home come with you for familiarity and to keep you grounded,” she said. For Rachel Merino, she said a challenge faced is balancing her close relationship with her sister and her individual life.

Zipcar provides instant vehicle access for Tech community

Red Raiders set to host third home meet

For Texas Tech students who lack a vehicle, issues may arise when wanting to get around campus. With the ability to share cars, this problem may cease to exist. Zipcar, a service now available on the Tech campus, allows registered members to access certain vehicles for personal use. Katelyn Chesley, public relations manager of Zipcar, said the service is the world leading car sharing network that allows people to reserve a car with gas, maintenance, insurance and 180 miles of driving. “Members simply join on our website,” she said regarding

Zipcar’s on-demand service. “You can reserve up to an hour or several days.” Regarding Zipcars on campus, Chesley said the service partners with more than 600 colleges and universities across North America. “We teamed up with Texas Tech to give students the freedom of being able to get off campus without the hassle of bringing a car to campus,” Chesley said. “It also helps the university meet their sustainability goals by reducing the need of having a personal vehicle and personal parking spot on campus.” With Zipcars on the Tech campus, Chesley said she hopes traffic will lessen. With just one Zipcar, she said studies have shown the

need for up to 13 personally owned vehicles is reduced. In addition to the diminishing traffic, there could be other benefits of Zipcar access on the Tech campus. Stacy Stockard, media relations coordinator of Tech Transportation and Parking Services, said Tech has been working with Zipcar for a while to provide students its services. “Every year, we see more and more students who choose not to bring a vehicle with them when they come to Tech,” she said. “When they get here, we want to make sure that they have options, and they’re able to get around campus and the city.”

The Texas Tech Track and Field program will look to build on its successful start to the 2019 indoor season in the upcoming Texas Tech Classic & Multis. The three-day event is set to begin at noon Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Sports Performance Center.

Day two of the meet is slated for a 3 p.m. start, while the third and final day of the event will begin at 10 a.m. Though the Tech men’s team currently claims the top-ranked spot in the country, the Red Raiders will not be the only program at the Texas Tech Classic & Multis with a number prefacing their name.
