The Texas Tech College of Visual and Performing Arts is involved with many aspects of the Lubbock community, both on and off the Tech campus.

Scotty Hensler, assistant director of Landmark Arts, said the School of Art hosts both undergraduate and graduate student displays as well as faculty art shows.

“We have 18 exhibitions in this one semester,” he said, “and it’s more than just exhibitions. We also have 10 visiting artists coming in next week, and we’re putting together the Texas Sculpture symposium next week.”

Several exhibits and events are free to both Tech students and to the general Lubbock community, Hensler said.

The Flatland Film Festival, an event hosted every fall, also accepts student submissions, Alford said.

The FFAT provides an avenue

for art, Hagy said, and it offers a comfortable environment centered on the appreciation of art.

Texas Tech Health Sciences Center utilizes simulation center to teach students

Over the past 20 years, simulation has been become an increasingly important part of health science education, especially at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

In 2010, HSC opened the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center, a 25,000-square-foot simulation center — the largest simulation center in the state of Texas.

“Learning in a simulated environment allows students to make mistakes without the need

for intervention by faculty to prevent patient harm,” Sharon Decker, director of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center and Covenant Health DECKER System endowed chair in simulation and nursing education, said. “Research has demonstrated that simulation provides an effective method of teaching while promoting learner satisfaction and self-competence.”

The SimLife Center can simulate any medical scenario or procedure, Sandra Caballero, coordi-

nator and academic instructor at the center, said.

According to HSC’s website, the center’s purpose is to help students CABALLERO learn the necessary skills to provide safe, quality care to patients in the future.

Most people recognize simulations as the future of medical education, Caballero said.

“The goal of when we started to use simulations was to integrate all the curriculums into the program,” she said.

While she does not think simulations could ever fully replace clinical studies, she said she sees it as an added bonus.

BACKLUND Caballero has worked at HSC for more than 12 years, she said, and has seen the SimLife Center make a difference in students’ performance after they graduate.

“At first I didn’t believe that it would make that big of a difference,” she said, “but you can see the difference both in the students’

confidence and competence.”

The center generally uses mannequins to simulate the procedures, Caballero said.

The mannequins can simulate most procedures, from cardiovascular surgery to childbirth, she said.

The mannequins can also sneeze and bleed.

A mannequin named Harvey helps students learn about more than 30 different cardiovascular diseases, such as murmurs and pulmonary diseases, she said.

Artists explain inspiration behind pieces

The Texas Tech System’s public art collection consists of 233 pieces from artists all over the world.

With the difference of environment comes the difference of ideas, pieces and methods, which contributes to the diversity of Tech’s collection.

While the budget is set aside through a mandate, the planning for the public art does not stop there, Emily Wilkinson, public art manager with the Department of Facilities, Planning and Construction, said.

Once a project is decided, Wilkinson sits down with the construction manager of the project to get it started. The budget, basic floor plans and renderings are drawn up, and the president nominates a representative from the department receiving the improvement.

“So basically what we do is the construction manager and I sit down with the representative and we talk about the project and see what their department wants for art,” she said. “Do they want a sculpture? Do they want something indoor? What kind of aesthetic do they like? Then we talk to them and get a feel for the department as possible. We like, if possible, for the art to reflect where it’s going.”

A request for qualifications is

“It gives new ways to think of things,” she said, “especially knowing that we have several different horse statues on campus but they all have different takes.

It’s interesting to see different viewpoints of the same kind of basic idea that they start out with.”

Each of the artists said they believe public art is important on campus to encourage imagination, history, the improvement of the quality of life and cause a reaction.

“With the proper opportunities,” Morrel said, “public artists can affect the lives of many people from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles in substantive ways.”

Molina said Tech is currently receiving about 50 applications per request for qualifications from all around the world.

The applications are all opened at the same time after the deadline, Wilkinson said, and a 20-person art committee votes on the submissions and ends up with about three finalists.

Each committee member serves a three-year term, she said, and anyone can nominate and be nominated to serve on the committee.

“It’s made up of Tech faculty and staff from the different campuses in the system. We also have some professional artists, some community members and one student,” she said.

“We have a pretty diverse committee and they get all of the submissions.”

The finalists are then invited to Lubbock, or wherever the piece is being placed, with a small stipend, Wilkinson said, and then will interview with the committee and show them a model, budget plans

and any other information they choose to bring.

The committee then votes on their favorite of the finalists and approval is sought from the president of the university and the chancellor of the system, she said.

“It’s a pretty long process, but anytime we put art on campus we want to be sure that it’s vetted pretty well through the whole system,” she said. “Every once in a while we have a controversial piece so it’s good to have something signed from the chancellor that he approves of that piece.”

The timeframe for when an artist is chosen and when the art piece is actually completed varies, Molina said, but it can take anywhere from 60 days to six or eight months to finish the piece.

Something special about Tech’s collection, he said, is that most of the pieces are commissioned by the university, not bought off of the shelf.

Artists that have their pieces at Tech really do come from all over the world, Wilkinson said, with the farthest being Spain.

Molina said he thinks it is important to have public art on campus because it helps to improve the aesthetic appeal of the campus and increase the flow and interconnectedness of the campus.

“So one way that’s really helped

improve the aesthetic appeal of the experience of walking through the campus is the magic of the public art collection being scattered through the spaces,” he said. “So we take that as serious of an aesthetic as the actual architecture on the buildings.”

Wilkinson said public art breaks up the day while walking to class and gives each student, staff member and visitor something new to look at as they are walking around the campus.

Chew said the location played a big role in his inspiration to create the sculpture.

“The power of the Creative Movement Studio and the passion of the dance and theater program’s mission and vision (was my inspiration),” he said, “The program’s student-centered focus, the emphasis — the importance placed on travel. The goal being exposure to a wide variety of areas, cultures and responsibilities to completely develop the students.”

The sculpture is an abstract piece and was created from raw stainless steel, he said. His sculptures often emphasize powerful movements or events, Chew said, through taking flat and uniform materials and transforming them them through forming, bending, twisting, heating, grinding, cutting and welding.

“Astrolabe” is located in the Experimental Sciences building courtyard and was installed in 2014, according to the book.

Chew said the sea, primitive navigational devices, ships, negative space, astronomy, the curvature of the earth, artist Henri Matisse and architect Antoni Gaudi inspired him.

It took one year to complete the piece, he said, and is made of aluminum, stainless steel mirrors, concrete, illusions and ideas.

LC has produced a reality TV show that has gained the attention of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization, which has shown its true identity as an organization against people’s rights to display who they love publicly.

The new reality show, “My Husband’s Not Gay,” has caused the organization to question TLC’s ideals toward same-sex relations.

The show centers around four men who admit to being gay, but are married to and dating women in order to maintain their dedication to the Mormon church, according to the TLC website.

A c c o r ding to the TV Guide website, the men in the show see their sexuality as something they must defeat due to their faith, and even refer to their own sexuality as “same-sex attraction.”

A petition to cancel the show was quickly created on the change. org website and has been signed by more than 70,000 people.

According to a Deseret News article, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis calls the show “downright irresponsible” and believes TLC is putting “countless young LGBT people in harm’s way.”

The show has caused a debate between Mormon church affiliates and the gay community on the show’s decision to showcase men choosing to stray away from their “homosexuality” and

instead choose a heterosexual lifestyle.

J. Brown Lowder, Slate associate editor, who is a homosexual, said, “It’s not really for us to judge the validity of how consenting, informed adults build their lives or pursue happiness.”

Furthermore, Lowder watched the show and found it to be amusing and not offensive, according to the article.

Ellis seems to be more concerned with deciding the fate of individuals’ sexuality for them instead of motivating them to make the decision themselves.

These four men are choosing to pursue a religious lifestyle with women and children and are “harming” no one. GLAAD is an organization that promotes the “gay” lifestyle — why not support gay men who are choosing an alternative lifestyle to homosexuality?

According to a Deseret News article, Sara Gilbert, former Rosanne star and host of The Talk, recently said there is a “reverse bullying” in the gay community where you “can’t live a certain way.” Gilbert also said people should respect the right of these men to make their own choice.

Gilbert and Lowder are both gay and believe these men’s way of living is perfectly fine and acceptable to them — why can’t GLAAD see it the same way? I believe the reason for this is such that GLAAD feels the need to control every gay individual who is in the public eye.

The organization’s decision to bash the television show concerns me on where it stands on helping gay individuals feel free to be their own people. Ellis says the show will “harm” young LGBT individuals, but she fails to realize these men are only a few of a whole community of religious gay individuals struggling with their sexuality.

Ellis’s badmouthing the show and the men participating in it only further highlights her hypocrisy toward the subject of helping gay individuals feel free to be themselves and follow whatever lifestyle makes them feel comfortable.

If these gay men wish to choose religion instead of homosexuality, then they have a right to and TLC has a right to display it to the world if it chooses to.

I feel the show is a great way of highlighting a different approach to homosexuality and will help any religious gay man or woman gain insight on alternative lifestyles.

GLAAD, instead of abolishing the show, should focus on the positive impact it can potentially have on helping young LGBT individuals find themselves, whether they are religious or not.

Procrastination can be good thing for students

B

y now, most of us have shaken off all remnants of holiday cheer and settled back into the routine of our college lives. The empty days of syllabus recitation and classroom icebreakers are long gone and each professor has started assigning their own assortment of tests, quizzes and homework.

All these components allow for the perfect opportunity for an old friend of countless college students to make an appearance — procrastination.

Procrastination will arrive just in time to distract you from a growing workload and entice you with all the exciting things you could be doing instead. And at some point, most of us end up submitting to its pressure.

As a procrastinator myself, I know this routine all too well.

As a result, I looked to the Internet for ways to cure my nasty habit. Most of the suggestions listed on the sites were things like “organize assignments by level of difficulty” and “make a homework schedule with timed intervals for work and breaks.” None of them helped. In fact, most of the “tips” seemed more complex and time-consuming than the damage procrastination causes.

After my brief Internet research fell flat, I started to think about

According to the Webster’s Dictionary website, procrastination is defined as “delaying or postponing action” or “putting off doing something.” It is important to remember there is a major difference between procrastinating and blowing something off completely.

Procrastinating, within reason, can actually be better than completing tasks early.

Such concept has even been coined “positive procrastination.”

One benefit of procrastination is better decision-making. When tasks are put off, there is more time to think about what is being done and why it is being done. Instead of jumping into something for the sake of checking it off of a to-do list, you are doing things you enjoy and that really mean something to you.

Media, specifically movies, plays a large part in influencing career paths of many students today. Viewing such material motivates many to strive to be just

like Jordan Belfort, DiCaprio’s character in the movie.

I remember specifically two of my colleagues speaking about their futures over the recent winter break. Both mentioned they were economics majors and seemed to get along pretty well. However, there was a specific moment in their conversation where I noticed their conversation was heavily focused on how much money they were going to make when they graduate, and how they both want to be the next “Wolf of Wall Street.”

Whether this comment was just a joke or whether it was their true motivation, Belfort, along with many of his corrupt co-workers, ruined thousands of lives financially — solely for his greed and desire for money.

An article in Business Insider provides an inside look of one of Belfort’s closest colleague’s daughters, Christina McDowell, who lost everything and can never forgive the father who raised her. According to the website, McDowell spoke upon the reallife situation, stating, “I drove a white Range Rover in high school, snorted half of Colombia, and got any guy I ever wanted because my father would take them flying in his King Air. And then I unraveled the truth. The truth about my father and his behavior: that behind all of it was really just insidious soul-sucking shame masked by addiction, which we love to call ambition, which is really just greed.”

For better or worse, money changes people in the long run.

According to the ESPN website, billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, donated $10.65 million to the Athletics Program at the University of Arkansas, stating, “The University of Arkansas is a special place and has meant so much to me and our entire family. We are honored to have the opportunity to give back to an institution, an athletics program and a state that has been such an instrumental part of our lives.”

It is obvious that not everyone who has a large bank account is corrupt or filled with greed.

Instead of being judgmental, it is important to understand how hard someone has worked to reach the goals they have achieved which have resulted in their extraordinary financial success.

Even more important is to understand that doing things for others can bring the key to happiness you may have been searching for rather than worrying about how much money you will be making when you graduate from college.

oday, many students choose career paths specifically based on the monetary income that field will bring rather than choosing a career path they will enjoy. Many of my personal colleagues specifically mention how much money they are going to make their first year out of college, if they graduate, rather than mentioning what section they are currently studying in their classes. Many even hate talking about it.

“Money. It’s a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash. But don’t expect it to buy you happiness,” Mark Cuban — arguably the best owner in sports — said, adding on to a line from Pink Floyd’s “Money.” A billionaire and owner of a very successful professional basketball team, the Dallas Mavericks, Cuban is the definition of a supremely successful entrepreneur. If a man with a listed net worth of $2.6 billion by the Forbes website states that money can’t buy happiness, there should be no reason to disagree with him.

Fascination with money often obliges students to build their lives around such topic matter, often resulting in backfire and ruin.

Instead of enjoying the subjects of so-called “interests,” students

is learning to better prioritize tasks.

Procrastinating makes one think about which activities are necessities and which activities are not too urgent. Prioritizing tasks can help one devise a better strategy of completing projects and assignments. With a good plan of action in place, there could even be more time for one to spend doing other things.

Procrastination is also beneficial in getting creative juices flowing. In addition to having a more creative plan of action, the work you produce could be more creative. After all, creativity isn’t normally something that can be rushed or forced. Creativity has to come naturally — a clear, relaxed state of mind is the best way to achieve it.

Another benefit of procrastination is producing better results. If you hadn’t chosen to procrastinate, you would have never come across the opportunity to prioritize what is most important at the moment. In addition, you would have never been able to distinguish what actions or tasks mean the most to you, thus requiring more time management from you.

The final benefit of procrastination is less stress. This may come as a surprise because waiting until the last minute to do a 1,000-word essay and having only two hours to complete it is extremely stressful. However, the act of procrastinating is actually quite relaxing. Procrastination is a brilliant way to relieve stress because the more time you spend procrastinating results in less time spent stressing out about your current situation. Also, less stress will leave you feeling much happier.

It is human nature to assume the worst, but what we might see as negative can often be positive in disguise.

Procrastination can be positive, if you use it the right way.

Chancellor’s Council announces Health Sciences Center faculty award recipients

By ALEXANDER NORTON Staff Writer

Texas Tech System Chancellor Robert Duncan announced the annual recipients of the Chancellor’s Council distinguished faculty awards Wednesday afternoon in the Tech Health Sciences Center. The awards recognize outstanding teaching and research and are the most prestigious honors granted to faculty at HSC. Vaughan Lee and Wendy Thal received the Distinguished Teaching Awards, and Sue Ann Lee and Afzal Siddiqui received the Distinguished Research Awards. The President’s Council was formed in 1967 and was later renamed and expanded to the Chancellor’s Council in 1996 to recognize excellent faculty in the Tech System.

Chancellor Duncan said the Chancellor’s Council helps recognize some of the faculty members the Tech System is fortunate to have.

He said having great faculty helps attract equally great students and additional faculty.

“The Chancellor’s Council is designed for these sorts of things.

It’s really good when you can recognize those who excel,” Duncan said. “These four faculty members here have excelled in teaching and research. It is great to highlight those accomplishments that our faculty have.”

Duncan said he was excited about the HSC’s record of producing great researchers and health care providers for West Texas.

Duncan, a graduate of Tech, said he is impressed by the growth HSC has experienced over the years.

“Whenever I was a sophomore at Tech back in the 1970s, I used to drive by the HSC on the way to work, and they were just digging the hole for the basement,” he said. “To see how all of this has grown since it began is really amazing.”

Afzal Siddiqui, a professor in the HSC School of Medicine, received a Distinguished Research Award for his work in immunology and infectious diseases.

He is trying to develop a vaccine with the potential to impact one billion people in developing countries, he said.

of getting the infection in 76 different countries,” Siddiqui said. “We are developing a vaccine that has gone through trials in non-human primates and we are getting ready to do the human clinical trials soon.”

Siddiqui was deeply honored by the award, he said.

HSC has helped foster and support his research, he said.

“It is really amazing. It is the second time I have received it. It is the highest honor you can get here for doing research,” he said. “I think I’m just the luckiest person to be here. I feel like everything is going up, and it’s such a great time to be here.”

Another recipient of the Distinguished Research Award, Sue Ann Lee, said she works on research regarding speech, learning and hearing at the HSC. Her lab’s focus is on improving

Perry: Felony case won’t delay 2016 preparations AUSTIN (AP) — Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry vowed Wednesday that a judge’s refusal to quash felony abuse of power charges won’t derail — or even delay — his preparations for a possible 2016 presidential run, calling the case tantamount to the “criminalization of politics.”

“We’re moving right along as we have intended,” the Republican said, mentioning his recent visits to the early primary states of Iowa and South Carolina. “We’ll make a decision, or actually make an announcement is a better descriptive term, in the May-June timetable, just like we had intended to before this.”

Appearing at a news conference at an Austin hotel flanked by two of his defense attorneys, Perry said, “I am proud to stand for the rule of law.”

A day earlier, state Judge Burt Richardson, also a Republican, refused to void charges against Perry on constitutional grounds.

The former governor was accused of abuse of official power and coercion of a public servant in an indictment brought in August by a grand jury in Austin, a liberal enclave in otherwise largely conservative Texas.

The charges stem from Perry’s 2013 publicly threatening — then making good on — vetoing $7.5 million in state funding for a public corruption division within the office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg. That came after Lehmberg, a Democrat whose county includes Austin, rebuffed Perry’s calls to resign following her drunken driving conviction.

Perry has spent about $1.1 million of his campaign funds on his defense, and Richardson’s ruling means it will likely continue for months, which could crimp Perry’s

speech therapy efficacy, she said.

“My research focus is on characterizing speech in children with and without speech disorders,” she said. “I’m looking at how the normal speech development takes place as well as with other children with hearing loss.”

Lee was honored to receive such a distinguished award from the Chancellor’s Council, she said. She is grateful of the support the HSC administration and other faculty have given her.

“It is a great honor to me. There are so many outstanding researchers at the HSC that I feel that I’m lucky to be chosen to receive this award,” Lee said. “The HSC has great support for its faculty. Tech professor turns hobby into career

Art comes in countless forms and there are equally as many outlets for its creativity and expression.

Jerod Foster, a professor of practice in the College of Media and Communication, has spent a large portion of his life pursuing creativity and exploring its various outlets.

Foster has been featured in The New York Times, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and has done nature conservation freelance work. He started doing work in the magazine world whn he worked on his master’s degree.

“I wasn’t originally interested in photography when I came to school, but I was always interested in creative things like playing music and drawing,” Foster said. “When I was in high school and even before that, when I was a kid, I was always drawing stuff. I always wanted to be doing something related to art.”

When Foster attended Texas Tech, he majored in agricultural communications and was required to take a principles of photography course, he said. He took the class in the spring semester after receiving a camera for the holidays that year, he said.

Foster used the class to learn about

the camera, he said. That semester he learned about the photography class taught at the Tech Center at Junction with the State Photographer of Texas Wyman Meinzer, he said.

He met with Meinzer and expressed an interest in the class, he said. The photography class at Junction travels for 15 days and practices photography. It was a life changing experience for him, he said.

After the Junction course, Foster started his master’s and used a lot of that time to work on photography and started to enjoy it more and more, he said.

Foster started teaching at the university several years ago. He was fresh out of his master’s program in agricultural communication and he had studied and worked with Meinzer, Todd Chambers, interim associate dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the College of Media and Communication, said.

“Ever since Wyman started pursuing his professional record, Jerod has continued doing excellent things and providing students with opportunities in landscape photography,” Chambers said. “From the moment I met him, I knew he was this unique guy with a special light inside of him.”

min because he started a publishing house with Meinzer, Foster said.

Instead, he was offered a chance to teach at Tech.

“He’s so talented in terms of being able to teach across our curriculum,” Chambers said. “He could teach news writing if he wanted to or he could teach advanced photography or these special topic classes.”

Foster has taught the Junction photography class, intro to photography classes and upper level photography courses. EMC 4301 and PHOT 4301 are special topics courses, which involve a 16-day trip to New Zealand.

Foster taught Junction intercession photography with Wyman for about six years, he said. Since Wyman left, Foster had taken over the course.

The classes “throw you to the wolves” and give students practical experience in the field, Foster said.

The classes involve travel, and the students gain field experience.

“New Zealand is a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s always a lot of fun to take students out of the country to let them have that international experience, and I think any student that has been out of the country knows what that is all about.”

The class goes on long alpine crossings and photographs everything from natural history phenomena to cultural and city street photography, Foster said.

“It’s pretty interesting and being able to shoot in New Zealand, one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it’s pretty inspiring,” Foster said. “It excites you to take good pictures. I think whenever you put students in those types of environments, in environments that mean a lot to them not only as photographers but to viewers, you inspire the student a little more to take it on creatively and strategically.”

Foster has used his experiences at Junction to expand the electronic media and communication department, Chambers said. He partnered with Robert Peaslee, interim department chairperson of journalism and electronic media and communication, on the New Zealand trip, Chambers said.

Peaslee’s interest is the intersection between travel and media and tourism and media and how those intersect, Chambers said.

“When Dr. Peaslee said he wanted to arrange a trip to New Zealand, the natural fit was Jerod,” Chambers said. “That class was a little more expensive than a regular study abroad trip, and it filled up quickly, but every student that went on that trip came back and shared how life changing of an experience that was, so we’re really looking forward to next year.

I can’t wait to see what plays out.”

In addition, Foster has offered several new course ideas for the college, Chambers said.

In the fall semester Foster began teaching a class called visual storytelling, based on his book “Storytellers,” in addition to a class called adventure media, Chambers said.

“It’s all about him as a person, but it stems from his teaching at Junction and his trip to New Zealand and his relationships in the Tech community and the outside community,” Chambers said. “Just thinking about all those unique cool things that are going to come out of that class is exciting.”

Foster’s passion for teaching and sharing knowledge is evident in his classroom every day, Chambers said.

Foster’s students are making a difference with their degrees, Chambers said.

“We’re really starting to see the tip of a big iceberg,” Chambers said, “the impact he’s had on students.”

One of these students is Jacob Copple, unit coordinator for web and video content in the College of Media and Communication. Copple met Foster when he was working at Mountain Hideaway and Foster was a regular customer, Copple said.

Copple found out Foster taught classes at Tech, so he took the Junction course, he said. During that course, Foster became like a mentor to Copple and their relationship has expanded from there, Copple said.

“I always tell people we have a multi-faceted relationship because we’re friends, we’re colleagues, I assist him on photo assignments, he’s on my committee for my thesis,” Copple said. “We have this professional and casual relationship.”

When working with Foster, Copple learns from him, he said. When on photo assignments together, Foster takes time to show Copple what is going on behind the camera and different lighting situations, Copple said.

“I think Jerod does a really good job of making every situation he’s in with me a learning situation,” Copple said. “Especially on assignments or in the classroom or if I’m a TA for his class, he does a good job of always making sure I know what’s going on.”

When working with students Foster said he is fortunate to work with art and the media. He gets to have one foot in both, Foster said.

“Whenever I’m commissioned to do a job it requires me to be creative,” Foster said, “but it requires me to be strategic as well.”

Foster has also taught his students to accept failure, Copple said Foster

also taught students to never be afraid to t improve after failing, Coppel said.

“Be OK to fail, be OK to look like you don’t know what you’re doing in situations. Jerod has taught me it’s OK to know what you’re not good at and then be really confident in yourself,” Copple said. “You have to fail.

You have to overexpose x amount of images before you get that good, crisp, really nice sunset.”

Foster has also taught Copple how to plan way before any of his shoots, Copple said. A photographer cannot just jump into something and think it is going to be good, Copple said.

“It’s hard work to plan something out and to make sure you have the necessary steps to produce a product that’s worthy of your name,” Copple said.

In order to become better photographers, students should look at good photography, Foster said. Students should look at good photography and be inspired by it.

“There’s nothing wrong with trying to emulate, you’ll find your own style along the way whenever you’re looking at good photography,” Foster said. “You’ve gotta put your nose to the ground and just work. You’ve gotta work hard. Any artist will tell you they give up things to make their work.”

Beyond photography, Foster writes books, loves to travel and be active and has a family with two daughters, he said Foster cycles and mountain bikes and has a studio in Lubbock.

As a result of his love for the outdoors, Foster enjoys nature photography, he said. He loves environmental portraits and to photograph people in their place.

“Some people say photography is a hobby, it’s still a little bit my hobby only when I get the chance to do it but I’m fortunate to make somebody’s hobby a living,” Foster said. “It’s been a great place to release some creative ideas.” ➤➤@TheDT_LaVida

Record players, vinyl make resurgence

While CDs and digital audio files are popular forms of listening to music today, vinyl records have been making a comeback in popularity in recent years.

Roger Landes, a professor of practice in the School of Music, said Edison cylinders were first used to play music on a phonograph and were made from wax.

“While there was a small commercial market for cylinders, they were expensive, the playback machine was very expensive. The playback didn’t last very long, and they were very fragile,” he said. “If you left one in a window, it would melt. They never really caught on in the way records would.”

The gramophone disk became popular commercially in the 1920s, Landes said, and the development of digital recording in the 1930s improved sound recording.

The selected speed for gramophone disks was 78 revolutions per minute, and this speed was used through the 1950s.

“In the mean time they invented the 45, or what we would call a single, which gives you one song on each side,” Landes said. “That

became a huge boost for pop music because they were inexpensive and you could get the song or songs you wanted. They were used to promote popular songs to the radio.”

The Long Play (LP) record was used starting in 1948, and 18 to 20 minutes of audio could be recorded on each side.

Christopher Smith, the chair of musicology in the School of Music, said the audio for a record is cut into the vinyl by translating the vibrations of the music into grooves on the disk.

“That’s not a very precise recording method, and some sound gets lost even in very high quality recordings,” he said. “The reason that the digital revolution was of interest to artists was because they believed digital recording was a more precise medium.”

The LP record changed how musicians, especially rock ’n’ roll artists, composed music, and Landes said some bands would put out records with only two 18-minute songs on them.

Skilled music producers knew the recorded tracks would sound different when played on vinyl, and Landes said they would mix records in a way to make the tracks sound best on the radio.

“The songs had to be constructed in a way that the songs were intact when they reached the end user,” he said. “One way to view what recordings of pop songs do is to think of them as a commercial for the recording. The most important line in the chorus is the name of the song.”

Starting in the 1980s, the use of vinyl records started to decline as CDs became more popular and older albums were digitally remastered for CDs. When the transition from vinyl to CDs was happening, Landes said he was working at a classical music store.

“I remember first people were disappointed that the CD format was so much less visual,” he said.

“I remember trying to sell them their first CDs, which were like $25 in 1983, and we had a little section for CDs which had about a dozen titles.”

The sleeves of records are larger than CD cases, and Smith said the record sleeves allow for a more detailed illustration and more writing.

When record companies stopped releasing vinyl, Landes said there was an immediate market for used records.

“We had a room full of vinyl records that were given to us by record companies called promos that we were supposed to play in the shop so the record would sell,” he said. “The owner of the store had me pack up the stuff we didn’t want and take it down the street to a new store that had opened up that was selling used vinyl.”

The used vinyl market never disappeared, and Landes said the first newly released vinyl record he took notice of was the album “The Mule Variations” by Tom Waits in 1999.

Tiffany Ferrer, a sophomore early childhood education major from McKinney, said she got her own record player when she turned 18.

“I just really love the way it sounds,” she said. “I like how it’s not completely perfect, it’s a little bit scratchy. It just sounds more real than something that’s more edited and auto-tuned.”

For people looking to buy vinyl records, there are various record stores they can go to, including Ralph’s Records in Lubbock.

Slowly, more artists have started recording on vinyl, and Landes said there are currently three record manufacturing companies

“They must not have gone out of business,” he said. “They must have hung on or done other things and kept their equipment. No one makes the equipment anymore to press records.”

Between 2007 and 2008, the sales of vinyl doubled, and Landes said vinyl has been the only part of the recording industry in the past few years that is growing.

Landes said he feels the resurgence of vinyl is a reaction to digitization, and vinyl is a way of

going back to a better sound and experience for listeners.

“It’s a move on the part of artists to say, ‘Hey, there was a time when this worked, and it worked with this technology and we like it better,’” he said. “I think overall it’s a healthy thing. I think the success of vinyl now is about people listening in their homes.

Boston, buried by 2 feet Ventura won’t see ‘American Sniper’; says Kyle is no hero of snow, bounces back BOSTON (AP) — Boston bounced back quickly Wednesday from the Blizzard of 2015, with subways, buses and trains up and running again the morning after the storm buried a swath of New England in 2 to 3 feet of snow.

Many businesses reopened, as did Logan Airport, and homeowners, motorists and storekeepers dug out with grudging praise for the forecasters, who missed the mark in New York but got it right in New England.

Chris Laudani, a Boston bartender, became an instant symbol of the city’s resilience for shoveling snow off the yellow and blue Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street, where the 2013 terrorist bombing killed three people and wounded more than 260.

“For someone to brave the blizzard to clear our finish line for us is yet another statement as to what our event means not only to runners but also to Americans,” said Tom Grilk, executive director of the Boston Athletic Association, which oversees the marathon.

Meteorologists had warned that Boston would get more than 2 feet of snow by Tuesday night, and the National Weather Service said the city ended up with 24.4 inches, the

sixth-highest total on record. Other areas received around 2 to 3 feet, pretty much as predicted.

“They actually got it right,” James Hansen said as he cleared a Boston sidewalk.

There was no gloating among the forecasters, who just seemed relieved they were on the money.

Pointing up the guesswork factor, the weather team at Boston’s WHDH-TV tweeted a photo of the office snow pool, with pre-storm predictions ranging from 22 to 25.5 inches.

As the storm gathered earlier in the week, forecasters had warned that Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey could get 1 to 2 feet of snow. But in the end, they didn’t even see a foot.

With snow removal in Boston well underway, commuters highstepped their way through a warren of snowy paths and towering snowbanks that gave the capital an almost alpine feel.

Still, bitter cold threatened to complicate efforts to clear clogged streets and restore power. Forecasters warned that it won’t get above freezing in Boston for a week, and several more inches of snow are expected Friday and again over the weekend.

Former Red Raider leaves mark on stadium

In March of 2010, Texas Tech alumnus and former photography professor Kenneth Pirtle presented a proposal for the creation of eight mosaics in the east side mezzanine of Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Tech public arts committee saw two other proposals along with Pirtle’s, but ultimately, the mosaic project was chosen. Pirtle then began the 32,000-hour project to put together the murals that are in the stadium today.

“I love Tech, as an alum, and I still go to all the football games every year,” he said, “so I’ve been a part of a lot of those events in the mosaics.”

Pirtle grew up in Levelland and enjoyed making drawings and paintings while he was a child.

When he started his first year of college at South Plains he enrolled in several art classes, he said, and after transferring to Tech, he got his degree in advertising art and design.

Pirtle said what he loved the most, however, was photography.

“My roots and all go way back,” he said, “but what I was the most inter-

ested in was photography.”

The idea and inspiration to do a large mosaic, Pirtle said, came while he was still at South Plains.

A teacher for one of Pirtle’s art classes did a mosaic on the side of a building on campus that he admired.

“I remember telling myself at that time,” he said, “‘gee, that’s something I’d like to do someday.’ I had that in the back of my mind as I finished up a 33-year teaching career at Amarillo College.”

After his retirement, Pirtle learned of a former student of his who passed away.

The student had been very passionate about photography, he said, and was a very active member of the Amarillo community, so the college wanted to honor her.

“I had the idea to take one of her photographs,” he said, “and transform it into a mosaic and put it on the side of a building. As I was finishing up at Amarillo College, that’s just what I did.”

After the Amarillo College mosaic, Pirtle said, he wanted to do more.

He did a second mosaic at the botanical gardens in Amarillo where he often volunteers, and it eventually

led to his involvement in the Jones AT&T project.

Pirtle said he had read online that the stadium’s east side was going to be renovated, and several members of the Tech football staff were going to be coming to the botanical gardens, so he took his shot with former athletic director Gerald Meyers.

“I kind of cornered him, which is very not like me because I usually don’t get to talk to the big guys,” he said, “and I said ‘Mr. Meyers, I know y’all are doing some remodeling and I sure would like to do some mosaics.’”

Meyers gave Pirtle the information of whom he should contact, and Pirtle sent in his idea for the mosaics, but he did not hear back for some time.

After a while, however, Pirtle got a call and was told to submit his idea for the arts committee to review. The committee selected his as one of the three finalists, and eventually went with it for the stadium.

“When mine was chosen,” he said, “I was just thrilled.”

Pirtle said he used Photoshop to blend the images he was using together and break them down into grids, which then works like a paintby-number picture.

“My wife is a chemistry teacher and not involved in art at all, but she

Tech guard Spears taking advantage of time in college Duffield, White win Big

Despite being listed as a sophomore in terms of basketball eligibility, Texas Tech women’s basketball player Minta Spears has already graduated with a bachelor’s degree in media strategies.

The starting guard on the women’s basketball team was able to earn her degree in two and a half years at Tech due to spending most of every year in Lubbock.

“I was the salutatorian of my high school class. I took advanced classes, so I came in with 20 or so hours and I had my (Advanced Placement) calculus credit,” she said. “Because I’m on the basketball team, I have to be here year-round, so I’ve taken classes every summer.”

Spears tore her ACL nine minutes into her freshman season and was able to be medically redshirted.

Sitting out a year and taking classes all year allowed Spears to graduate in December of 2014.

“I’m so thankful to have that redshirt and be able to use the four years of eligibility,” Spears said. “But at the same time, it’s kind of put me in an awkward spot because I just graduated but I’m a sophomore.”

Now that she has already earned a bachelor’s degree, Spears is taking advantage of the rest of her time at Tech by staying in the College of Media and Communications pursuing a master’s degree in sports media.

Trying to balance graduate level classes along with practice and games is something she is still trying to figure out since it is still early in the semester.

“Those classes just started so I’m trying to feel it out and see how I want to handle it,” Spears said. “Being in season does make it hard, traveling and stuff like that. I just try to make sure I’m organized.”

While the Lady Raiders are 19 games into the season, Spears is averaging 8.2 points per game and is shooting .469 from behind the arc, which is highest in the Big 12 Conference, according to the website.

Despite being the top in the conference, she said her shooting form has been an area focus for her throughout the season.

“I’m probably working the most on my release and my 3-point shot. Just being ready to shoot at all times and off different screens and off the dribble,” she said. “Right now, in my shooting workouts, I’m working on quick release and shooting with confidence.”

Toward the end of her redshirt freshman season, Tech coach Candi Whitaker said Spears is one of the smartest players she has coached because of her ability to quickly pick up on new offenses and defenses in practice.

Due to putting a majority of her hours into reading for class and basketball, Spears does not have much free time. Whenever she does get time away from the court and school, she enjoys being with friends and relaxing.

Since Spears is starting a master’s program during her redshirt sophomore season, getting her sports media masters is not the end of her plans, she said.

“The master’s program I’m in right now is a yearlong program. I could potentially graduate with a master’s next spring and then I’ll still have

Duffield, who earned the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week, competed in the high jump at the meet and cleared a 2.25m/7-4.50 jump. Duffield’s jump broke both a Tech school record and a meet record. His jump ranks as No.7 for the indoor world mark.

White earned the Big 12 Female

Athlete of the Week award by placing third in the 60 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay, and her 23.18 mark for the 200 meter dash ranked second in the nation and in the world.

White’s Big 12 award marks only the fourth time a Lady Raider has won the award.

White’s award marks the second consecutive week in a row a Lady Raider has earned the Big 12 Female of the Week award following redshirt junior Le’Tristan Pledger’s award after her performance at the Texas Tech Open.

The No. 24 Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Texas Tech men’s basketball team 81-36 Wednesday night in the Lloyd Noble Center.

The Red Raiders stayed within reach of the Sooners in the first eight minutes. However, Oklahoma began to pull away from Tech by going on a 7-0 run to take a 19-7 lead with 8:18 left in the first half.

Junior guard Devaugntah Williams broke up the Oklahoma run with a layup, but Oklahoma outscored Tech 18-5 as the half came to an end.

The Sooners continued to overpower the Red Raiders, scoring 18 points in the first five minutes of the second half, two more points

than Tech scored in the entire first half. Tech only scored one point during Oklahoma’s 18-point second half start.

Tech finished the game shooting 21.2 percent while the Sooners shot for 52.5 percent.

Three Sooners scored in doubledigits, while no Tech player reached 10 points.

Oklahoma’s win moves it to a 13-7 overall record and a 4-4 Big 12 record.

Tech moves to 11-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
