ith less than three weeks until the start of the 2018 season, the Texas Tech baseball team has hit the field for team workouts in preparation for its opening series against Maine starting on Friday, Feb. 16. This year, the Red Raiders have earned high preseason rankings, including No. 3 by D1Baseball.com, No. 5 by Baseball America and No. 3 by USA Today’s coaches poll with one vote for No. 1. One of the main areas for the coaching staff to focus on is pitching. Currently, coach Tim Tadlock said junior right-handed pitcher
Davis Martin and junior lefthanded pitcher Steven Gingery are the favorites. “Those two spots will be spots we want to see guys develop and be able to get a little bit deeper in games, (and junior right-handed pitcher) Ryan Shetter is obviously in the mix,” Tadlock said. “(I’m) excited about the possibility of other guys competing for those roles and at the same time we have a lot of confidence in guys we’ve been rolling out there when you start talking about Davis and Gingery, Shetter, all of those guys but I think in college baseball that evolves as you go.”

Professionals stress voter registration, volunteers By NATHAN NEEDHAM Staff Writer
Lubbock county officials and Texas Tech professors are urging Lubbock citizens and Tech students to register to vote by Monday, Feb. 5, to vote or make changes for the forthcoming primary elections on Tuesday, March 6. With an institutional enrollment of more than 30,000 undergraduate students, according to the university website, some individuals might
not know how to register to vote as a citizen of Lubbock. The prerequisites to vote are registering to vote in the county one lives in, be a U.S. citizen, be 18-years-old by election day and not be convicted of a felony nor be mentally incapacitated, according to the voting application. Voter registration applications can be found at the Lubbock county elections office, drivers license office, public libraries, post offices and various other government offices.
Applications must be complete and postmarked 30 days before the election, according to votelubbock.org. “If they want to be registered in Lubbock county they should contact our office,” Roxine Stinson, chief deputy of the Lubbock county elections office, said. “They can go fill out an application, you do have to print it, sign it, and send it in, because we have to have that signature on file,” she said.

Four Texas Tech students are marching their way into the new season by leading the band and upholding the positions of head drum majors and assistant drum majors for the Goin’ Band from Raiderland. William Pyle, a junior music education and performance major from San Antonio, and Jessica Calvit, a junior music education major from Gladewater, are step-
ping into the positions of head drum majors, while Madison Fanning and Connor Macalister are the assistant drum majors. The four students were selected for the positions after participating in a challenging application process. The students are required to apply online, answering personal questions about their goals and hopes for the season. They then perform multiple auditions and an in-person interview.
