Tech achieves Tier One Carnegie Designation By KRISTEN BARTON News editor

On Monday, Texas Tech became one of 81 public institutions to receive top-tier recognition. Tech earned Tier One Carnegie Designation. The institutions achieving this status are announced every five years, according to a Tech news release. The distinction is based on a university’s research, academic scholarship and teaching

in the categories of Highest Research Activity, Higher Research Activity and Moderate Research Activity. “Designation as a Carnegie Tier One university is not accomplished overnight,” John Opperman, Tech interim president, said in the release. “It is the culmination of years of dedication to research, teaching and learning by our administration, faculty, staff and students.” According to the release, this status is representative

of Tech’s momentum as a university. In May 2012, Tech was the first university in Texas to earn access to the National Research University Fund. This fund was established in House Bill 51. Commitment to research has been enhanced by infrastructure investments, faculty retention and recruitment and workspace, according to the release.

The official campaigning for the new Student Government Association executive positions begins Wednesday.

Students in two blocs, Strive and OneTech, are looking for the chance to make a difference at Tech by serving in student government positions. John Michael Getz, OneTech presidential candidate

and a junior accounting and finance dual major from Lubbock, said OneTech encompasses the experience and variety the team has. The team wants to use its experience to work for the students and find

out what they need before they even know they need it. “We’re running for student government but at the end of the day we’re just a larger part of a student body of 35,000 students,” Getz said. “We’re

all just one student body and that’s why we want to encompass the OneTech that we are.” If elected, Getz said he wants to work on tax-free textbooks for students. This is already in the works in

the state legislature, he said. Other universities have been lobbying for this as well, and other states have adopted this policy.

Globetrotter visits local elementary, answers questions JUSTIN REX/The Daily Toreador

Harlem Globetrotter Buckets Blake gave a presentation to students from Williams Elementary School on how to prevent and handle issues with bullying on Tuesday.

The Harlem Globetrotters started out as a team of five African-American basketball players in 1926 who played any Chicago team willing to play them. Since then, the team has expanded to 31 players who travel around the world to play in front of diverse audiences. This diversity is also found in the team itself as the players come from all across the U.S., and

women have donned the Globetrotter uniform since 1985. The Globetrotters will play at 7 p.m. Sunday in the United Supermarkets Arena, and Buckets Blake, a veteran point guard for the team, visited Williams Elementary on Tuesday to talk to the kids about bullying. He entertained the kids with basketball tricks throughout his talk, but he stressed the importance of action, bravery and compassion when dealing with a bullying situation.

The Globetrotters started the Great Assist Initiative this year, and the goal is to get 100 million smiles in the next 10 years. Fans can nominate people who are assisting in their communities in a major way, and if they are selected, the Globetrotters will do what they can to help their causes. After speaking with the kids, Buckets took time to answer some questions about his experiences as a Globetrotter.
