A single-engine plane crashed into the KCBD television tower in southeast Lubbock around 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, killing the pilot, Dr. Kenneth Michael Rice, a doctor in Lubbock. No other fatalities or injuries have been reported. The crash caused power outages in the area, and the TV station was evacuated. Shortly after the crash, local law enforcement and emergency personnel arrived on the scene. The six-passenger plane was found about a quarter of a mile from the KCBD station in the area of 54th and Avenue A. The station was evacuated for safety reasons, Steve Holland of the Lubbock Fire Department said. “The remaining portion of the tower only has one of the remaining guidelines on it and the structural engineers out here looked at it and determined that it was unsafe to stay in the building because the rest of the tower could come down,” he said. After hitting the tower, the plane struck a main Lubbock Power and Light transmission line located in close proximity, according to an LP&L news release. About 2,500 residents were without power. LP&L crews arrived on the scene after the accident, and power was restored around midnight. “The tail section is pretty much gone,” Holland said. “You can see a little portion of it’s crumpled. The wings are — and I haven’t spent a lot of time over there looking — but I believe one of the wings for sure was detached from the airplane.” A cold front had just moved in Wednesday and there was “light freezing drizzle” during the night with temperatures in the upper 20s with strong winds, according to the National Weather Service. It is unclear whether these conditions caused the accident. As of Wednesday night, Federal Aviation Administration investigators were on their way to the crash site, according to a news release from the FAA. The aircraft dropped off radar screens about 7:30 p.m. The National Transportation Safety Board also has been notified. “I do know that the NTSB is on their

RICE way,” Holland said. “Don’t know exactly what time we will be expecting them. Fire department is setting up mobile command operations for us and PD and the NTSB as they come in and we’ll be able to further update you as we get more information.” Rice and Vernon Farthing II, both University Medical Center doctors, are listed as owners of Daedalus Air, LLC — the company that owned the plane. Each piloted the plane, though Rice was piloting during this flight. According to FlightAware, the Piper Malibu plane left Carlsbad, New Mexico around 5:50 p.m. MT and was scheduled to land at Lubbock International Airport at 7:49 p.m. local time. Rice was an expert in diabetes treatment, according to the Physician Networks Service UMC website, and focused his doctoral research on insulin. Rice obtained his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from the University of Texas at Arlington, according to the website. He attended the Health Sciences Center for medical school and completed his residency in the Department of Internal Medicine in 1997. The DT reached out to UMC for a statement, and UMC officials are expected to release a statement Thursday, and it will be available at dailytoreador.com. ➤➤@dailytoreador
