With Opening Day for the 2016 Texas Tech baseball season scheduled for 2 p.m. on Feb. 19, the players are close to having to decide what song will be played at Rip Griffin Park every time they walk up to home plate.

While walkup songs may not be the most important part of a player’s game, many of the Red Raiders are not revealing anything about their song choice.

Junior outfielder Anthony Lyons said fans will have to come to Opening Day to hear his song of choice.

“I have some thoughts,” he said. “But I’ll just hold that for Opening Day and let everybody see if they like it.”

After winning Big 12 Player of the Year as a sophomore, Eric Gutierrez decided to use the same song for his junior season, “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry. The senior first baseman started last season with the song “Space Cowboy” by Steve Miller Band, but ultimately went back to “Play That Funky Music.”

Gutierrez said he was not sure if he will use the same song for a third year in a row.

“I’ve been (looking) from rock to hip-hop to something Spanish, I don’t really know,” Gutierrez said. “I’m asking my teammates. I don’t really care. I usually tweet out something and see what the

fans say.”

While he is undecided, Gutierrez said he is leaning toward either a hip-hop or Spanish song.

Since Gutierrez does not worry about what song he will hear before home at bats, he said he wants a song his teammates enjoy.

“I go by just because people like it or my teammates like it,” he said. “They want to listen to a song that will bring good vibes. I don’t want to put something where my teammates are going to be like ‘aw, I don’t want to hear this. I don’t want this guy up to hit.’ So that’s what I take into consideration.” @JeremyK_DT

Red Raiders vie for postseason

Second year coach Adrian Gregory cons t r u c t e d Te x a s Te c h softball’s non-conference schedule with one thing in mind, put the team through it all before landing in the Big 12. After finishing with a slightly below .500 record at 2526, Gregory wants to avoid the start the team suffered in 2015 against Oklahoma and Baylor.

Before the team begins conference play, however, Tech must face a list of opponents coming off winning seasons and postseason play. These teams include Washington, Minnesota, Kentucky, San Diego State, LouisianaLafayette, LSU, California and Arizona State.

Gregory’s no nonsense approach to the 2016 season sends a message to the team, as she wants Tech making it to the postseason. At the tail end of the 2015 season, Tech showed

its best by winning nine of its last 12 games.

Correcting past mistakes is what defines the 2016 season for Tech. Although opponents like McNeese State and UTSA do not pose the same challenge as some of the Power Five Conference schools Tech faces, those teams earned victories over the Red Raiders last season.

At the end of the 2015 season, pitchers Cara Custer and Chandler Moore completed their four years of eligibility and left open spots for the Tech rotation. Along with open spots in the rotation, former players Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe opened spots at second and at home plate.

The first test for Tech’s new lineup comes against UNLV in the Sportco Kicko f f C l a s s i c , w i t h M i nnesota and Washington awaiting the Red Raiders in the third and fifth game of the tournament.

Tech’s lineup and rotation may see some chang-

es from game to game, as a total of six freshmen join the Red Raiders and four transfers increase the depth on the Tech roster.

In the pitcher’s circle, Tech added international experience with the signing of junior transfer Dominique Alcocer. Sophomore transfer Cheyenne Powell, junior transfer Halie Vance along with junior Mattison Maisel bolster Tech’s pitching and present the Red Raiders with a wider set of relief options than last season’s three player pitching staff.

In addition to a replenished pitching staff, Tech’s batting power didn’t lose its strength without Belshe and Hopson in the lineup, as five players who averaged above .300 return for the 2016 season.

appear, but the Red Raiders sport a roster with a high ceiling.

The ending of the 2015 season left the Red Raiders with a boost of momentum, and in their opening tournament wins against

Washington or Minnesota could bump the confidence of the team. This season’s schedule shows Gregory’s belief of the team and with the long season ahead, Tech needs strong opponents to compete against

a dominating Oklahoma Sooners team.

Baseball, softball look to increase ticket sales

Fans are a big part of every sporting event. Home field advantage is important for every sport. Ticket sales have been on the rise for both softball and baseball the past few years. Both softball and baseball are looking to get more people into the ballpark for the 2016 season.

Marcos Rael, a Texas Tech promotions and fan engagement member, has big plans to get more people in the ballpark for softball games, he said. Rael wants to bring more community involvement into the games.

“We are going to tie in ‘Team of the Game’ honors into the opening ceremonies,” Rael said. “We want to make sure that the kids are coming out and are having a lot of fun so they want to come more.”

Because they had a record attendance for bringing in the teams last year, Rael said he wanted it to be implemented more this year. They want two or three teams to be featured per game to get more people in the stands.

Softball promotions and fan engagement use both social media and email to reach out to fans about coming to the games, he said, but they are implementing something new this year for fans.

“We actually have a new thing this year, through Red Raider Alerts, when people can opt into receiving texts from us about the games,” he said. “It will send out a text that tells the fans the promotion of the game and the time of the game. We hope fans will respond to that.”

Rael said his goal is to raise the average attendance by about 200 fans this year.

“We will be trying out some fun aspects to every game,” Rael said. “There is not going to be anything repeated. It’s going to be a fun atmosphere.”

At the other diamond across campus, baseball attendance has been on the rise for the past few years, Eric Ward, assistant director of Promotions and Fan Engagement, said.

“Several years ago, we were in the low 30s nationally in attendance,” Ward said. “Two seasons ago, we

jumped into the top 20 at No. 20. Last year, we were at No. 13. We are hoping this year to jump into the top 10.”

Baseball has set student attendance records for the past two years, Ward said.

Much of that is because of the promotional nights they did, including setting the Guinness World Record for the most people wearing fake mustaches to a game.

“We hold 950 tickets every game for students,” Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Robert Giovannetti said. “The students have been pretty good about coming out and supporting Tech baseball. We always have a loud and full student section every game.”

To jump into the top 10 in attendance, Promotions and Fan Engagement is tweaking some existing promotions like doing a Dog 5K at the annual Bark in the Park this year, Ward said.

They also want the midweek games to be more entertaining, he said. It’s been difficult to draw students to the games at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Baseball also reaches out to students through Snapchat and Instagram to get information to the students about the games.

“We feel great that 520 students attend the games regularly,” Ward said. “Powerhouse programs across

the nation are not even drawing that.”

The goal is to fill up every seat, he said. Baseball is hoping to average more than 600 students per game.

“This is a great baseball community and our fans have always been supportive,” Giovannetti said. “It makes a difference when you have a big crowd there making a lot

of noise for the Red Raiders.”

Baseball’s first home game is at 2 p.m. on Feb. 19 at Dan Law Field as they take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The softball team will make its first appearance at home in the Texas Tech Invitational against McNeese State at 5:30 p.m. on March 4 at Rocky Johnson Field. @DavidGayDT

Texas Tech coaches explain physics of pitching

On the surface, softball and baseball are similar sports.

Someone pitches the ball toward another person with a bat and they attempt to hit the pitch.

However, there are major differences between pitching in softball and baseball.

One of the major differences between softball and baseball pitching is the distance the pitchers are from the hitters, pitching coach for softball Amanda Locke said.

In baseball, they throw from 60 feet and in softball they throw from 43 feet.

The distance from the hitter changes the velocity of the ball, Locke said. The baseball comes at the hitter anywhere from 90 to 100 miles per hour and the softball comes at the hitter

from 60 to 70 miles per hour.

Baseball players typically throw their pitches overhand while the softball pitchers throw them underhand, baseball pitching coach Ray Hayward said. This change in the way they pitch changes the angle of the ball.

“The main difference is the angle at which the ball comes in,” Hayward said. “The softball pitchers pitch from underhand which is going to start at a low spot which gives the pitch a low angle. With baseball, which is farther away and up higher and in an overhead spot, which gives the pitch a downward angle.”

Because softball players throw the balls underhanded, they have the ability to throw a rise ball, Locke said.

“In baseball, they don’t have a pitch like the rise

ball,” she said. “They don’t have a pitch that comes in rising. It’s moving up, that makes it so difficult to hit.”

Softball players can also manipulate the spin more on the ball, Locke said. They can get more backspin due to the underhand motion. The ball will cut in a different way that will trick hitters more than normal baseball pitches.

“I think that right off the bat it would be tough for a baseball hitter to hit a softball,” Hayward said. “I’ve seen major league hitters come in and try and hit college fast pitch softball pitches and they struggle. It’s a different angle and different look.”

The baseball player would have to get used to different things if they hit a softball, Locke said. Softballs are bigger and they have a different

color than baseballs, and the rise ball would be the hardest pitch to hit for them.

If the softball pitcher had to make the adjustment to

throw from 60 feet, it would be a different ball game, Locke said. The softball would move much slower.

Baseball brings back simpler times

I

n 2010 and 2011 when the Texas Rangers went to backto-back World Series, the team gained a large amount of new bandwagon fans. As a lifelong fan of the Rangers, most of the time those fans annoyed me, but a small part of me was jealous of them too.

Those people got to experience walking into the ballpark in Arlington for the first time in their lives, which is a special moment you only get once. The smell of the grass, the people clad in red and blue and the voice of Chuck Morgan saying “it’s baseball time in Texas,” still give me goosebumps.

While I have a number of fantastic memories at that wonderful ballpark on the Nolan Ryan Expressway in Arlington, the most special part is the game that is being played.

Baseball is simple, and that is what makes it good.

Many people nowadays will tell you they don’t like baseball because the game moves slowly, and those people just don’t get it.

In today’s fast-paced world of instant gratification, most sports fans want high-scoring games like basketball or even Big 12 Conference football.

Those people would rather see a Zach Smith alley-oop or Jakeem Grant juke out a billion defenders on his way into the end zone than a hit-and-run in a 1-0 baseball game.

Now don’t misunderstand me — I love football and basketball too — but baseball comes from a much simpler time. It is unique in that it doesn’t use a clock, and one of the best qualities you can have as a hitter in the sport is patience.

Qualities like these are what made baseball into America’s pastime, and why movies like “The Sandlot” make many of us nostalgic for a period of time we never even lived in.

It has a rich history with fantastic characters, most of who loved the game for its simplicity just like I do.

“The thing I like about baseball is that it’s one on one,” former home run king Hank Aaron once said. “You stand up there alone, and if you make a mistake, it’s your mistake. If you hit a home run, it’s your home run.”

On Texas Tech baseball’s Opening Day next Friday I will sit at Rip Griffin Park for at least two hours. I will watch a number of simple one-on-one matchups and I won’t be in a hurry to get anywhere. Ultimately, it is those qualities that make me love baseball so much. opinions@dailytoreador.com

It seems interesting that the two voting blocs, OneTech and Strive, have no mention of many of the social and political issues that are plaguing students throughout the country: increases in student loan debt, campus sexual assault, insufficient focus on mental health issues and many other issues.

Both blocs have more interest in increasing the amount of alcohol available to students and trying to give more money to homecoming activities as opposed to using their status to actually help out any students. In a recent article by The Daily Toreador, the candidates discussed the student body’s want and need for more alcohol to be served closer to or on campus.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating for a universitywide crackdown on alcohol on campus — that would be silly.

However, there needs to be an increase in more serious education about alcohol, because the last thing students need during stressful times on campus is easily available alcohol.

That would only increase binge drinking and more than likely add to the already rampant problem this town has with drunken drivers.

There was also mention of expanding the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center to give students more of an opportunity to increase their physical health. What wasn’t mentioned were the details on how it would be funded. The Rec Center has its purpose and it already serves it to the fullest. There is no need for any costly expansions.

Just recently Texas Tech was forced to raise overall tuition by 2 percent — I think it’s obvious that an expansion to the Rec Center would justify another tuition raise.

It was also recently that

Tech earned a Tier One Carnegie Designation, which can be attributed to investment in research, not investment in more turf football fields or a leisure pool. Tech already has amenities all students have to pay for, and if the student body collectively looked into it, we would realize there are far better ways to use money.

However, a more gruesome way of fund allocation and fundraising came from the idea of starting a concert series and improving RaiderGate. There are a few similarities between providing a good educational experience and good game day experience, so it should be obvious student government should not put its focus on something that is a non-issue such as RaiderGate.

There were also contradictory remarks concerning, yet again, alcohol sales and the football game day experience. The thought that alcohol should be sold to the student section at a game while wanting to address the egregious amount of binge drinking that occurs while tailgating does not bode well — the two simply don’t go together.

The emphasis both blocs had on RaiderGate activities was outstanding and quite concerning as well. It almost seems as if some of the candidates were asked to give a generic college scenario in a bad Hollywood movie. They weren’t actually talking about inciting change, but rather, they were talking about the parties, the amenities and the big games. There is more to this campus than just a bunch of beer guzzling, football watching miscreants that only care about having fun.

It also seemed confusing to me how both blocs were talking about inclusion and finding space for multicultural groups on campus. I feel like it’s a bit hard to sympathize with the problems of the minority students when there was a lack of diversity within all of the executive candidates themselves. That’s just what multicultural students want — more white males leading them to victory.

I guess it is difficult for me to understand how a group of young and able students that

have the power to increase productivity and fairness on campus are promising the student body barely anything truly productive.

There are a few subjects brought up that have the potential to carry weight, but definitely weren’t expanded on enough. Trying to create a system of tax-free textbooks, ADD/ADHD testing and scholarships for international students were among the few. These need to be more than lip service, there needs to be an actual plan in place that would do these few great things they want to do.

Student Government Associations have the pull and influence to speak to agencies and organizations that a single student wouldn’t be able to. They need to lobby the Texas Legislature for laws and legislation that is already coming up in the U.S. Senate, that would put a cap on publishing companies’ prices for textbooks. They need to relieve the student body of the stigma that comes with having ADD or ADHD and do their best to include international students throughout campus.

Other student governments across the country have taken initiatives to address other more important issues.

Northeastern University has created a campus-wide book exchange to alleviate the burden of buying books. The University of Memphis’ The Daily Helmsman has created a new executive office to help support LGBT individuals, and St. Edwards University in Austin has hosted, and will continue to host, campus discussions on sexual assault.

Tech’s SGA has some bright ideas and the entirety of the student body hopes, I’m assuming, that they can follow through. However, it is important to note that these elections shouldn’t just be another mark on the resume for the candidates and winners, but a way to actually fulfill promises made and unionize the ideals of the campus.

ou have a little something on your forehead.

Oh wait. Ash Wednesday. Duh. When I was little, I used to think only practicing Catholics smudged a cross onto their foreheads, but when kids from my Methodist church began showing up to school with that same charcoal adornment, I realized the scope of this tradition was wider than I had thought.

Now, as I’ve grown deeper in my faith, I understand this all much better. However, I remember when I had just begun to get involved at my church (ah, ninth grade) I was so overwhelmed by the intrusive nature of this season. Our lives were supposed to be shaken by repentance for the six weeks between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, also known as the season of Lent.

We were supposed to get some ashes smeared on our faces and give up something that we really loved. What that should be, I had no clue, but I understood the rules: suffer for six weeks and then rejoice when Easter weekend finally arrives.

One year, I gave up chocolate because (much like the rest of the world) I love chocolate. Another year, I gave up Instagram (So original, I know). Oh, the agony of not having chocolate or social media!

However, it wasn’t until last year that I finally started to grasp the point of all this: we are not called to give up something we enjoy that enriches our lives, only to run back to it on Easter.

The point is to give up something that stands like a wall between ourselves and the Lord, so that on the other side of these six weeks we will be standing a little closer to Him. It is to give up something that we cling to and have come to need, not just something that distracts us from our homework. When I realized all of this, I decided to give up gossiping.

Don’t get me wrong — I wasn’t some big gossip. I didn’t have to give up starting rumors and put down my burn books.

I was never a gossip like that.

However, I had learned to use the drama occurring in other people’s lives as a way to keep conversations fresh and flowing.

I used it as a way of bonding with my friends like we were

But, much like friendships based on proximity or gushing about a crush, when the drama faded, so did the friendships.

They lost their luster, and I quickly saw how little substance they had.

From that very ashy Wednesday onward, I strove to have deeper, richer conversations. I began asking my friends what they thought about Meghan Trainor’s bash of “Barbie dolls,” if they agreed with Colorado legalizing marijuana and whether they were going to study abroad in college.

These topics might seem silly to some, but for me they led to conversations that broadened my understanding of my friends and their values.

On top of that, in those anxiety filled moments where I felt tempted to stir up excited, gossip-filled conversations, I found myself in the middle of a great challenge. I wanted so badly to dish about drama, but forced myself to push past that to a much more rewarding conversation.

Thank God I did, because if I hadn’t have stopped, all of the friendships I spent all of high school building would have crumbled the second we separated for college. They would have never had a chance of being substantial because what they initially had been based on was trivial and time sensitive.

So, Christian or not, ashy forehead or not, I really believe all students can improve by surrendering something for these next six weeks in pursuit of something greater. Maybe Instagram really would be a good thing to get rid of, so get rid of it.

Or maybe chocolate is slowing bringing you closer and closer to that “Freshman Fifteen.” But, if those things aren’t our weakest links, let’s leave them, find where we’re compromised and build that area back stronger.

Dan Law Field receives upgrade In the offseason, Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park underwent nearly $1 million in renovations, replacing the video board and the FieldTurf playing surface.

The video board will double in size from 15 by 20 feet to 48 by 22 feet, according to a December 2015 Tech Athletics news release.

The video screen will encompass the entire width of the current scoreboard.

“Part of our goal with The Campaign for Fearless Champions is to continue to provide our fans with the best game day experiences possible,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said in the release. “This new video board will help us to deliver on that promise.”

According to the news release, the entire playing surface has been replaced

with FieldTurf.

“Every day we are looking for our faces up on the videoboard,” senior outfielder Anthony Lyons said.

“We are excited to see what it looks like.”

Coach Tim Tadlock said in the release that the new FieldTurf would keep the student-athletes safe and help their performance.

The turf will be a selling point as the team and coaches continue to recruit future players to Tech, Tadlock said in the release.

“The new field feels great,” Lyons said. “Last year, our field was nice, but just seeing how much can happen in a short amount of time, it’s pretty great to see.”

According to the news release, the projects have been funded by private phil-

anthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

“The facility is looking pretty nice,” Lyons said. “We thank the donors for that.”

Senior infielder Eric Gutierrez said he feels blessed he has the opportunity to play on a field like Tech’s.

“Playing on a field like this makes you want to work harder,” Gutierrez said. “I started playing on fields that didn’t have a wall or just had a little backstop. Looking at this field right now and seeing the Double T in the middle is amazing. It’s a blessing.”

Pitchers can improve Tech’s Big 12 ranking

4. Kansas In 2015, Kansas missed the .500 mark in the Big 12 by one game with an 8-10 record, but finished with a 4015 overall record. This season, the Jayhawks’ best batters of 2015, senior Chaley Brickley and junior Lily Behrman, who batted .386 and .369 last season respectively, according to a Kansas Athletics release, return. Along with its best batters returning, Kansas has seven starters returning for the upcoming season, and it has the base to improve its Big 12 record.

The softball season begins for the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 8 p.m. today in Eller Media Stadium versus the Running Rebels of UNLV. Before the season starts, I made my predictions for how the Big 12 conference may shape out.

1. Baylor Two seasons with a second place finish follow the Baylor Bears, and although the team can compete with a Sooners squad, Baylor’s defensive weapons can prove the difference when the two teams meet in Waco. Last season, Baylor ’s pitching staff combined for a 2.55 ERA. Although Oklahoma’s pitching staff and batting finished atop of the Big 12 in 2015 and they have a roster full of talent, Baylor’s returning core adds the experience the Bears need to separate themselves from Oklahoma.

2. Oklahoma Last season, the Sooners ran away as the leader of the Big 12 with a 49-9 record, eight games ahead of the second place Baylor Bears.

This season Oklahoma continues to make a case to end at the top of the conference, but with only one returning starting infielder, according to an Oklahoma release, the Sooner offense could suffer. A miniscule 2.19 ERA at the end of the 2015 season made the Sooner pitching the best in the conference, and with three

Alex Morgan scored off it 12 seconds in and added another goal in the 62nd minute and the U.S. opened CONCACAF qualifying for the Rio Olympics with a 5-0 victory over Costa Rica on Wednesday night.

Morgan’s goal was the fastest in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying history, and the team said it is believed to be the fastest in U.S. history. It came on a designed play that the team uses off most opening kickoffs.

The match was the Americans’ first competitive game since winning the World Cup. They have won three straight Olympic titles and four of the five in women’s soccer.

The team finished with the lowest batting average with a combined .276 percentage, according to a Big 12 release. A new coaching staff joined Oklahoma State at the end of last season, and while new coach Kenny Gajewski may improve the Cowgirl record, spreading a new philosophy takes time in any team.

Tech looking to finish at top of conference

1. TCU The TCU Horned Frogs are coming off of a Big 12 Postseason Championship title in 2015 after finishing with an 18-5 conference record. The past two seasons have been successful for the Horned Frogs as they also captured the conference postseason title in 2014 and have made an appearance in the College World Series the past two years.

However, TCU has yet to advance to the College World Series finals each year. In 2014, the Horned Frogs made it to the third round of the series and then made it a step closer in 2015, failing to reach the finals by one round.

The Horned Frogs have the odds in their favor and are ranking in at No. 1 in preseason conference polls, including the Big 12 preseason poll. Returning to the Horned Frogs roster this season are 15 letter winners, which are like the varsity members on a high school team, and 18 newcomers, according to the Big 12 website.

2. Oklahoma State Oklahoma State finished in second place in the Big 12 Conference last season with a 14-8 conference record and 38-20 overall record.

Josh Holliday has led his team to the postseason every year during his three seasons at Oklahoma State, and that is likely to continue this season.

The Cowboys are returning three All-Big 12 starters plus an All-Big 12 freshman player. After winning the Big 12 regular season title in 2014 and appearing in the conference finale last season, Oklahoma State could be primed to win the Big 12 again this year.

3. Texas Tech The past two years, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have finished at a better position than predicted. In 2014, the year Tech made it to the College World Series for the first

time in program history, the Red Raiders were projected to finish eighth in preseason polls, but finished in fourth place at the end of the season.

The Red Raiders also have an experienced roster with 19 letter winners returning to this year, as well as seven position starters coming back, according to a Texas Tech news release. With experience from players and from the 2014 College World Series appearance, the Red Raiders are looking to finish above their predicted mark once again in the 2016 season.

4. Texas The Big 12 picked Texas to finish second in the conference last season, but they finished with an 11-13 Big 12 record and fifth in the conference. The Longhorns still managed to make it to the NCAA postseason by winning the conference tournament.

The team will return two All-Big 12 freshman performers from a year ago. One of the two, right-handed pitcher Connor Mayes, finished in the top 10 in the conference with a 2.58 ERA, according to the Big 12 website. Texas will have to improve on its 9-16 road record from a year ago or go on another Big 12 tournament run if they hope to make the postseason this season.

5. Oklahoma The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team will be looking to keep up the recent trend of success the university has seen from its football team and basketball team when beginning the 2016 season.

The Sooners are predicted to finish fourth in the Big 12 preseason poll, behind Texas and in front of Tech.

Oklahoma last placed fourth in the preseason poll in 2010, according to the team’s website, and finished second in the conference standings that year. In 2010, the Sooners also made their 10th appearance in the College World Series. However, the Sooners lost 11 players to the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, according to the website, and are bringing in 21 newcomers, making the

Sooners a less experienced team in 2016.

6. West Virginia West Virginia posted a 27-27 overall record, but won only two Big 12 threegame series. Last season’s All-American Freshman Kyle Davis returns for the Mountaineers. Davis missed only one game as a freshman and hit .353, third in the conference, with 31 RBIs. The Mountaineers led the conference in home runs in the 2015 season, according to the Big 12 website, but did not have consistent pitching.

The team will have to win more home games this year if they hope to finish in the top half of the Big 12.

7. Kansas State Entering the 2016 season with a previous 27-30 record, the Kansas State Wildcats are looking to improve with the program’s largest senior class since 2006, according to a news release on the Kansas State Athletics website. With eight seniors, two sophomores, nine juniors and 13 freshmen, the team and coaching staff will have to rely on young guys to make an impact early. However, the Wildcats will have two of their four top hitters from last season in seniors Tyler Moore and Tyler Wolfe.

An early factor for the Wildcats will also be relying on the younger guys on the road, as the team begins the season on an eight-game road trip. The Wildcats did not do well on the road last season with an 8-13 record on the road and a 5-6 record at neutral sites.

8. Baylor Baylor had the worst road record in the Big 12 a season ago, causing them to finish next to last in the conference.

The Bears have a strong chance to finish in the bottom two of the conference again because they did not have any All-Big 12 performers last season and only one AllBig 12 freshman. The team had the worst hitting and the second worst pitching in the Big 12 in 2015, and that could continue into 2016.

The bright spot for Baylor is sophomore outfielder Kameron Esthay. He finished 10th in the Big 12 with a .323 batting average and .477 slugging percentage, according to the Big 12 website.

9. Kansas At No. 9, the Kansas Jayhawks are coming off of a losing season in 2015. The Jayhawks went 23-32 in 2015 and had an overall 8-15 record in conference play.

Kansas struggled in pitching last season with all but senior Ben Krauth posting a losing record. Krauth was also the only player to start in every game he appeared in and ended 2015 with a 3.65 ERA. The offense for the Jayhawks will be interesting to watch this season, with sophomore Michael Tinsley returning to the squad. Tinsley had a batting average of .346 last season with 66 hits with 196 at bats. He was also second on the team in doubles with 15 on the year.

Player of the Year: Eric Gutierrez, Tech Entering his senior year, Tech first baseman Eric Gutierrez is looking to continue his trend of improvement

since arriving in Lubbock in 2013. One special feature Gutierrez has is his durability. Gutierrez has played in 177 games while at Tech and has started in 177 games.

In 2013, the Mission native had a career low in batting average, hits and a career high in strikeouts with 41.

In 2014, the lone College World Series appearance in Tech history, he had a .302 batting average as well as a career-high 74 hits, and has 27 strikeouts while at bat.

Last season, Gutierrez had a .315 batting average and a career high in walks with 39 while at bat. This year, he will be one of the leaders that Tech coach Tim Tadlock will look to for help in improving the younger guys on the team. He is also an improved defensive player and ranks tied for third in Big 12 play with an all-time .994 fielding percentage. If he keeps improving, 2016 should be a great year for Gutierrez.

Pitcher of the Year: Mitchell Traver, TCU Junior right-handed pitcher Mitchell Traver was a part of the secondbest pitching rotation in the nation last season. After

losing multiple starters to the Major League Baseball draft, Texas Christian will rely heavily on Traver ’s arm in 2016.

Traver finished last season with a 1.89 ERA, the fourth best in the Big 12 and the best among returning players for 2016. He also held opponents to a conference best .184 batting average, according to the Big 12 website. After missing all of the 2013 and 2014 seasons with injuries, Traver could be even more dominant in his second season as a starter and win Big 12 Pitcher of the Year.

Big 12 Coach of the Year: Josh Holliday, OSU In each of his three seasons of coaching his alma mater, Josh Holliday’s team has been in the NCAA postseason. In 2014, Holliday gave Oklahoma State its first Big 12 Baseball Championship and won Coach of the Year. If Holliday’s team can take advantage of a young TCU pitching rotation and win the Big 12 again, he will win his second conference coach of the year award in 2016. @TheDT_sports

Expectations still high for Red Raiders in 2016

Entering last season, the players said their goal was not only to return to Omaha, Nebraska, but to win the National Championship.

The Red Raiders finished in third place in the Big 12 Conference but missed the NCAA tournament.

Junior outfielder Stephen Smith said the team still has as high of expectations as last season.

“I think we have a lot to prove. I think we didn’t do what we expected ourselves to do, but we got a lot of guys back that really want to show what we can do, what we should have done,” Raley said. “But we are all excited.

I think we got a great lineup and a great bunch of pitchers.”

The Red Raiders were picked to finish in fifth place in the Big 12 according to the preseason poll this season, but each of the last two seasons, Tech has ended up higher than it was picked in the preseason poll.

Tech has scheduled games at multiple Major League

Baseball parks this season.

Four-year coach Tim Tadlock said the place he most looks forward to playing at this season is Omaha, the site of the College World Series.

There are numerous ranked teams on the Red Raiders non-conference schedule and Tadlock said that is because they want to show Tech is one of the best teams in the country.

“We want to put a team, again, in position to compete in the postseason and have a chance to go to Omaha. To do that you have to go on the road more, little more than you used to have to,” he said.

“We want to be a top 10 team, so obviously we are going to go play some that are starting the year (in the top 10).” @JeremyK_DT

TECH BASKETBALL DEFEATS IOWA STATE IN OVERTIME

n front of a home crowd, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team earned its first ranked win of the season after defeating the No. 14 Iowa State Cyclones 85-83 in overtime Wednesday night in the United Supermarkets Arena.

Coach Tubby Smith said coming back into the game after trailing by as much as nine gave the team a welldeserved victory.

“We were fortunate to get the win and I loved the way our guys competed, especially down the stretch the way we defended and got stops when we needed,” Smith said. “I’m excited for our kids. Certainly we need a win like this.”

Sophomore guard Justin Gray let up a couple of 3-pointers to start the game, one from the left corner and one from the key.

On defense, Iowa State penetrated the Red Raider frontcourt with senior forward Abdel Nader, making his first five shot attempts for 11 points nearing the 15-minute mark.

Efficient shooting defined the first half for the Cyclones as they made 16 of their 28 shots in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Senior guard Devaugntah Williams then had a hot shooting stretch to undo an eight-point deficit for the Red Raiders. William’s scoring spark began with a right corner jumper followed by two consecutive 3-pointers.

In the final seconds of the half, Iowa State and Tech went back and forth to try and gain a halftime lead. After senior forward and Wooden Award finalist Georges Niang made a one-handed shot after recover-

ing his own blocked shot, Williams drove in on transition and scored a layup by drifting the ball past the defense.

Before facing the Cyclones, Williams said the team focused throughout practice on its shooting to keep up with Iowa State’s offense.

“We knew they were coming in looking to get shots up,” Williams said. “Wednesday and Monday we probably shot the ball for like an hour total, so we just got a lot of shots up.”

Iowa State answered back with a 3-pointer, but with its last possession of the half, Williams once again made his way past traffic for a layup and tied the game at 37 each. Junior guard Monte Morris attempted a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the ball did not reach the rim and the 37-point tie stood.

At halftime, Williams led both teams in scoring with 14 points and Nader followed in scoring with 11 points for the Cyclones.

As a team, the Red Raiders combined for a 48.3 shooting percentage on 29 attempts and made five of their 11 3-point shots.

On Tech’s first possession of the second half, Gray scored on a mid-range jumper, but Nader once again came out shooting and helped the Cyclones to a 51-44 lead after the first four minutes of the second half.

Williams interrupted the Iowa State offense with a pair of free throws, but Iowa State continued to work the post and regained a nine-point lead after Deonte Burton dunked on a lob pass from Morris.

Leading 54-45, the Cyclones began to see their lead slip with Tech going on a 6-0 run after sophomore forward Zach Smith lit up the crowd with a monster dunk on a pass from

senior guard Toddrick Gotcher.

A pair of layups stopped the Red Raider run and placed the Cyclones ahead 60-53 with 11:03 left to play. Nearing the five-minute mark, junior forward Aaron Ross tipped in his shot and made a follow through charity shot to chip the Cyclone lead to just three points.

Ross came through with a 3-pointer after his previous 3-point play and kept the Red Raiders within striking range with Iowa State leading by just four at 76-72 with less than four left.

On a breakaway play, Gray drove the ball down court and earned a trip to the free-throw line after Burton intentionally made contact and fouled out of the game.

We were fortunate to get the win and loved the way our guys competed.

TUBBY SMITH HEAD COACH Smith made it a one-point game for the Red Raiders with a free throw after Gray made one of his two free throws as well.

Iowa State earned a trip to the lineup after a foul on Niang, but the senior forward missed the free throw and Tech called a full timeout with 52.7 seconds remaining with a 7877 deficit. Another split trip to the line tied the game at 78 for the Red Raiders, and a missed shot from both sides in the final seconds forced overtime.

Iowa State scored first in overtime with a layup, but Ross tied the game with a pair of free throws. Evans

finally gave Tech the lead by draining a three ball off of the backboard with only two seconds on the shot clock.

Evans said he improvised his go-ahead shot.

“I called make,” Evans said.

“I just popped back kind of just threw it up and just lined it up and it went in.”

Evans’ 3-pointer, Niang said, gave a major blow to the team late in the game.

“Don’t even get me started, that guy shoots 31 percent from three, he hits two big 3s in the second half,” Niang said. “You just get hit with that, it’s just like someone stabbing you in the stomach.”

The Cyclones did not respond to the 3-pointer from Evans in their next possession, but Niang cut the lead to one with two free throws.

Smith bumped the lead to 85-82 with a pair of free throws after an intentional foul, and on the final possession of the game, Iowa State missed a jumper from the outside.

Including overtime and regulation, Tech shot for a combined 46.8 percent from the field and the Cyclones combined for 54.7.

Ross finished as Tech’s leading scorer with 20, and Williams followed with 19 points.

Burton led Iowa State’s offense with 20 and Nader scored 19.

Tech’s win over the Cyclones improved the team’s overall record to 14-9 and Big 12 record to 4-7. For the second time at home, Tech defeated a ranked Cyclone team with its last win coming last season with a 78-73 victory.

Alumna to compete on reality show

Q: How different was the race in comparison to Lubbock?

A: “I used to work for McDougal (Real Estate), and I used to tell everybody that Lubbock is honestly one of the best places to grow up and live, and you can always get on Southwest and go somewhere tropical, but then you can come back home. Being on the race, I had traveled a little bit outside of Lubbock because of my job. I got to travel around the world, and there were places I had obviously never been before, and just the fact we got to go all the way around the world is pretty surreal. It was quite the experience.”

When 11 teams travel to Mexico City in the first leg of “The Amazing Race” on Friday, flight attendant Marty Cobb will represent Texas Tech as an alumna.

Cobb, who graduated from Tech in 1989 with a degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management, will race around the world with her youngest daughter, Hagan Parkman.

This season, which has a cast of 22 social media stars with a combined 88 million followers, premieres at 7 p.m. Friday on CBS, according to the network’s website.

Cobb made national headlines in April 2014 when her YouTube video, “Hilarious Southwest Flight Attendant,” went viral with more than 22 million views as of February 2016.

In the video, Cobb cracks jokes over an airplane intercom as she gives pre-flight instructions, and it led to Cobb and her daughters being guests on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

The Daily Toreador spoke with Cobb about her experience on “The Amazing Race.” Viewers will have to watch and see how far Cobb and Parkman go this season and around the world, she said. Here are her answers: Q: How did you and your daughter end up on “The Amazing Race?”

A: “They actually contacted us.

A girl who is now one of the casting directors was a flight attendant with Southwest and was on Season 15 with another flight attendant for Southwest. She actually contacted me last year or about a year and a half ago, and I couldn’t do it then.

They called again and asked us to do it, and I thought, ‘You know what, I’m not getting any younger, and if I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna do it now.’ They asked us to do it, which was such an honor.”

Q: What was your favorite place to visit?

A: “I can’t tell you where we went yet, but I can tell you that we started in Mexico City, which was great.

Just, what an adventure to travel around the world and do all the stuff we got to do. Mexico City was great.”

Q: What was it like to be able to travel around with your daughter?

A: “It was just a once in a lifetime experience. Hagan, she’s my baby, and she just graduated from another school. It’s a small school, Texas A&M, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it — I always tell her not everybody can get into Tech. She just graduated in May, and we had such a great time. We’re close. She lives with me right now. We’re both the babies of our families, so I guess we both aren’t afraid to make fools of ourselves on national television.

We had a ball. It was awesome.”

Q: Did you ever think that your viral video would lead to you being on “The Amazing Race?”

A: “Not in a million years. I had people who wanted a copy of it, and everyone was so sweet and complimentary. I literally was trying to email it to people because I

didn’t know how to send it to them.

Finally, one of my girlfriends told me to put it on YouTube. I put it on there on a fluke, and I guess the rest is history. Never in a million years did I think that I would’ve been blessed as much as I’ve been blessed from just a little video.”

Q: Tell me about your background and how you went from Texas Tech to Southwest Airlines to “The Amazing Race.”

A: “I grew up in Lubbock my whole life and went to Tech there. I basically raised my babies in Lubbock until Hagan was in eighth grade. I had a couple of different jobs while I was in Lubbock, then when this opportunity came up with Southwest, so many of my friends I knew who worked there just loved it and I knew it was something I wanted to do. I applied and slipped in under the radar, and that’s basically when I moved from Lubbock because it was hard to

MARTY COBB TEXAS TECH ALUMNA Q: Will viewers think of your team as the underdogs or as one of the top teams to beat?

A: “It will not be dull — I can tell you that right now. It will be comical. I told all my friends to make sure you have a big bottle of wine because you’re going to need it to watch me. I definitely think we were the underdog going in. I was the second oldest person on the show this year, and the majority of people who go on the race are younger and in better shape than I am in. There are athletes and young kids, yet being a flight attendant and having life experience has helped, too. We are such big fans of the show, and we’ve watched every season, so watching that and watching how other people did, I realized that it’s not always the fastest, strongest, youngest person who wins. It’s the slow and steady sometimes. I told Hagan at the very

beginning that I will not give up no matter how hard it gets, and I will do whatever it is I need to do — even if it scares me to death like heights, so being a flight attendant is the perfect job for me. I told her if we had to jump out of an airplane, she might have to push me, but I’ll do it.

We just need to enjoy the experience and get as much out of it as we can, and that’s what we did.”

Q: What was one of the biggest challenges of being on the race?

A: “As a mother and daughter team, it was hard for me to remember she’s not just my daughter, she’s my partner. I’m her mother, but we’re also a team and we’re partners.

We just have to encourage each other and know it’s a team effort.

It’s not just one person who’s going to carry the team. Just being older and slower was probably my biggest challenge because I’m carrying this big heavy backpack around. Hagan said I looked like a big pink marshmallow the whole time because I had my coat on. I think just being older was the biggest challenge, just trying to keep up with these young kids. A lot of it’s just luck — what cab driver you get and all these things you can’t control.”

Q: What advice would you give to anybody who wants to be on the show, especially any Red Raiders who want to go on the race?

A: “Of course, being a Red Raider was a huge advantage. That southern charm helped me a little bit throughout the race. First of all, if you have the opportunity to do it, do it. I am in my 50s, and it’s honestly something I never thought I would do, never really aspired to do. As I get older, I realize that life is so much about memories. This is it. This is our life. Do whatever you want to do with it, and if you have these experiences, don’t pass them up. Just enjoy the ride, and I just would encourage anybody to do it. I’m always so proud to be from Lubbock and to be a Red Raider, and I just think the people that go to Tech and are from Lubbock are just the best people in the world.” @DailyToreador
