Student enthusiasm increases for men’s basketball By CONNELLY BOCK Staff Writer

T

he No. 7 Texas Tech men’s basketball team is in the midst of its best start in program history since the inception of the Big 12, and the impact has been obvious on the students, with each Big 12 game more packed than the last. The Red Raiders hosted the No. 2 West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, Jan. 13, in the first top 10 home matchup in program history. It was also the first sellout of the season, with 15,098 fans in attendance, according to Tech Athletics. “The first thing I’d like to say, and I speak for everybody in our program including our players, is we’re just really appreciative of the crowd,” Tech head coach Chris Beard said, after the game. “I think that’s one of the best crowds in Texas Tech basketball history. Why do I say that? Because our students aren’t here. First, I want to thank the students that were here. Classes don’t start for a couple days, but it’s very apparent to us that we had students come back to Lubbock early to come to this basketball game, so that means the world to us.” The Red Raiders defeated the Mountaineers 72-71, matching the highest ranked win in school history and leading to Tech’s fan base storming the court. Jason Leach, a senior psychology major from Cleburne, said storming the court was an unforgettable experience.

Three campus entities are once again getting together to host a forum for the candidates running for executive positions with the Student Government Association. Texas Tech’s SGA, The Daily Toreador and The Hub@TTU will host an executive candidate forum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 in the Student Union Building’s Matador Room. However, all three entities will need the help of students for this forum. Each candidate will get a question regarding the position they wish to be elected to and this year there will be an option to receive community questions via a Google Survey. The survey will be provided by The DT and is open to anyone who wishes to fill it out. The questions students
