Texas Tech first baseman Eric Gutierrez catches the throw from pitcher Cameron Smith for an out during Tech’s 8-2 loss to Oklahoma State on April 25, 2015, at Rip Griffin Park. Gutierrez is expected to be a veteran leader in his senior season.

Senior infielder Eric Gutierrez and junior outfielder Anthony Lyons have brought a veteran presence to an overall young Texas Tech baseball team. With Gutierrez in his fourth year and Lyons in his third, they will lead the team throughout the season with their veteran experience. During his time at Tech, Gutierrez has started every game he has been a player for, according to the Tech Athletics website. He has been solid through his first three seasons, posting a career .291 batting average through 177 total games. In all of his four years, Gutierrez has started his season at home, he said. Opening Day is the date he is focusing on. “We are excited about Opening Day,” Gutierrez said. “But the goal for every team, including ours, is to make it to Omaha. That’s why we are focusing on practice.” Gutierrez does not focus on the preseason rankings that come out, he said. They do not matter to him at all. “It doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you end up,” Gutierrez said. “You could start last but end up number one.” Lyons is also expecting to have a good season, he said. Lyons is making sure every player is working as a team and sticking together through the rest of the season.
