esearch is part of almost every major university, but some universities, such as Texas Tech, add emphasis to research in order to excel.

Lawrence Schovanec, Tech provost and senior vice president, said research is beneficial to society and knowledge.

It helps provide opportunities for students and enhances the intellectual environment of the campus.

“It’s not just research, I think when we use that phrase we need to emphasize we’re talking about scholarship, creative activity,” Schovanec said. “It’s about advancing the state of whatever discipline somebody may work in.”

Tech has a varied field of research because of the varied interests across faculty, Robert Duncan, vice president for research, said. Tech excels in applied genetics and bioinformatics.

When it comes to broadening university research, Duncan said Tech needs to use innovation to get people excited and involved.

For students to get involved in research, they just have to reach out to a faculty member who is involved, Duncan said. Finding out what their professors are researching can help students become involved.

When Tech received Tier One Carnegie Designation earlier this month and was moved to the highest category of doctoral institutions of Carnegie foundations for highest research, it was a reaffirmation for Tech, he said.

“Becoming Tier One in the Carnegie foundation, which means we are R1 highest research uni-

versity, places us among 115 out of roughly 600 universities in the United States that do research in one form or another,” Duncan said. “This really does give us quite a bit of exclusivity.”

This distinction improves every degree at Tech, Duncan said, even if students are not involved in research.

When Tech received the Carnegie classification, it was one of 15 universities to move from the higher status to the highest status, Schovanec said. West Virginia and Kansas State also made the jump. Now, seven of the Big 12 schools are in the highest category.

Beyond the Big 12, there are prestigious institutions in the highest research category, he said. Some of these include Princeton, Brown and Duke.

Faculty discuss undergraduate research value

the center serves as an advocate or a first step for students who want to conduct undergraduate research.

“Students who want to do undergrad research oftentimes come to us as a first step and we try to connect them to things we already know about,” Justyna said, “and/or if there’s something going on we don’t know about, to kind of help them brainstorm professors they’ve had in class or connected with.”

There are two types of funding available for students who wish to pursue research during their undergraduate degrees, she said, including funding for lab supplies and travel awards for students to present their work.

Tech’s Undergraduate Research Conference will be hosted from March 29 to 30 in the Student Union Building, Justyna said, and about 200 Tech students are involved in the conference.

“We’ve tried really hard over the past three or four years to really get people to think outside of the science, technology, engineering, math box,” Justyna said.

“That’s a huge part of research, but we have faculty members and undergraduate researchers doing humanities, the arts, all different

fields of study.”

Undergraduate research can also help students build a network, receive more personal letters of recommendation and build relationships with faculty, Justyna said.

“It kind of mimics the real world more than they get in the classroom,” Justyna said.

Undergraduate research requires students to use skills applicable to a working environment, Justyna said, such as critical thinking, problem solving, working as a team and communicating.

Jerylme Robins, the unit coordinator for undergraduate research at CALUE, said the center is the perfect place to go if students are undecided about conducting research during their undergraduate degree.

“It’s pretty impressive what our faculty are allowing our undergraduates to actually participate in,” Robins said.

Undergraduate research can also help students decide what direction they want to take after graduation, Robins said, like entering a master’s program or deciding what part of industry they want to work in.

Paul Bolls, an associate professor in the College of Media and Communication

and associate director for the Center for Communication Research, said undergraduate research is able to build and enhance a student’s education.

Faculty members make good mentors for those seeking out undergraduate research projects, Bolls said, and students can find faculty members with similar interests to help them with their projects.

A strength of the College of Media and Communication, Bolls said, is the diversity of research and areas of interest between professors in the college.

“A strength is the diversity of research going on in this col-

lege across the faculty,” he said.

“It really gives undergraduate students a huge menu in essence to choose from in terms of their interests.”

Undergraduate research is not just for students who want to enter a master ’s program, Bolls said, and only about half of the students he has mentored in undergraduate research have gone to graduate school.

“That’s the most common misconception of undergraduate research, I think, and that is that students can get engrained and believe the myth that this is something for you only if you want to go to grad

Bayer CropScience brings new opportunities to Tech

Bayer CropScience is one of the top cottonseed producers in the U.S. It is also a leader in crop protection and plant biotechnology, and its partnership with Texas Tech helped Tech achieve Tier One Carnegie Designation research status.

Bayer CropScience has 11 facilities in and around Lubbock and is an active corporate citizen in Lubbock, engaged at every opportunity with local businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations and government officials, as well as Tech, according to its website.

Bayer CropScience also has a new Seeds Innovation Center across Marsha Sharp Freeway.

many different things going on at Tech in regards to crop research. Weindorf also serves as a liaison between Tech and Bayer CropScience to help administrate new programs.

“One of the biggest, most exciting projects is a university private sector

partnership called Project Revolution,” he said. “This is a partnership between Tech’s College of Ag Sciences as well as Bayer CropScience.”

Weindorf said the partnership started when Bayer CropScience made a multimillion dollar donation to

Tech. The funding was then submitted to the Texas Research Incentive Program, where Tech also received some matching funds from the state of Texas.

“That basically took the gift that they gave us and multiplied it even more,” Weindorf said.

About three times a year, a committee of Project Revolution gets together to consider different projects they would like to fund out of resources in the revenue pool provided through donations, he said.

“People from Tech and Bayer CropScience can recommend projects to this. It really runs together,” Weindorf said. “Any type of crop improvement that you can think of, genetic improvements, fiber strength, disease and pest resistance, drought resistance, all kinds of different traits that they are looking to improve in cotton.”

In addition to this research, the Department of Plant and Soil Science also has Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute, Weindorf said. There is some great research going on there, and some of the researchers there have received funding from Project Revolution.

The amount of money given out to researchers depends on what they are seeking to do and how the improvement can be brought to market, he said.

The research is important because cotton farmers are constantly faced with continued pressure because of droughts, extreme rainfall, nematodes and other threats, Weindorf said.

Students use many skills in the research lab they can also use at their place of employment, he said, such as strategically solving problems and critically thinking about issues.

“There’s nothing like hands on, outside of the classroom research experience, where you’re rolling up your sleeves, getting your brain and hands dirty, working side by side with a faculty member on a question that you’re both curious about,” Bolls said.

The Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration recently changed its Master’s in Information Technology to the Master’s in Data Science degree.

Eric Walden, a professor at the College of Business and director of the Data Sciences Program, said the program previously had two tracks, technology and analytics, but now focuses on just data science.

The college updated the program by changing s o m e c o u r s e s , Wa l d e n said, and made it into a one-year program.

Data scientists need to be able to manipulate data and change formats, he said, and that also includes a statistical and business component.

“Companies have been

getting a lot more data recently and storing that data and they want to do something with it,” Walden said.

It’s one of the best investments I probably could have made for just the future and how technology has changed all around us.

Companies can get consumer data from sites like Facebook, Amazon, Twitter and LinkedIn, Walden said.

Nicholas Burns, a graduate student in the Data Science Program, said the program has a competitive admissions rate, but is also flexible and includes business, statistics and computer science.

He currently works in administration as an analyst at Tech and does research and information management, Burns said, so a Master’s in Data Science would be beneficial for his career.

A large future need for analysts was also a reason that he wanted to do the program, Burns said.

“It’s one of the best investments I probably could have made for just the future and how technology has changed all around us,” Burns said.

There will be a shortage of professionals who are equipped to analyze big data, according to a McKinsey & Company report, and by 2018, there could be a shortage of 40,000 to 190,000 professionals able to read big data.

“I guess the biggest thing is developing my quantitative skills,” Burns said, “and being able to translate, you know, these vast amounts of data.” @EastonWollneyDT

Experts investigate zombie outbreaks

“For the most part, what we’ll actually see is sort of an oscillating behavior in zombie population,” he said.

“It goes up a little bit and it comes down, it goes up a little bit and it comes down, but doesn’t grow exponentially and out of control.”

The basic criteria for a zombie is that it must have died and subsequently arisen from the dead. This definition was used to cre-

ate a wide range of zombies, Calhoun said, the most well known being fast zombies and slow zombies.

Brock Williams, associate chair for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is the director of LAZARUS. The life of a zombie can be described in four stages, Williams said — stage-1 zombie, stage-2 zombie, fast zombie and slow zombie. Altering the time zombies spend in each of the four stages is used to simulate different zombie species.

During simulations, Cal-

houn said, they found slow zombies to be more of a problem than fast zombies, which may seem odd at first. However, it is because slow zombies have a higher tendency to group together, whereas fast zombies disperse easily.

“It’s pretty easy to take down one zombie, whether he’s fast or not. If you have 100 slow zombies, that’s going to be harder,” he said. “So, it does turn out slow zombies are sort of more deadly than fast zombies.”

In reality, however, a zombie outbreak is unlikely to occur, and LAZARUS is bigger than just zombie simulations. It addresses two key issues, Calhoun said. Firstly, it provides research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students at Texas Tech. Secondly, it is used as a model for outreach to high school and middle school students.

The lab was established in 2014, and since then, LAZARUS members have visited several schools in and around the Lubbock area.

Additionally, students from many of these schools have visited Tech to learn more about LAZARUS, according to its website.

“So, a lot of the focus is on recruiting students who otherwise might not be interested in science or math,” Williams said. “But, you know, you say ‘zombies’ and you get people’s attention that way.”

Additionally, the techniques used for modeling zombie virus could be applied just as easily for several other diseases.

For instance, one of the parameters used during zombie simulations is called human offensive skill. It defines the probability that a human will survive in an encounter with a zombie. Human offensive skill could be interpreted

Research expenditures come from different sources: federal, state and private, Schovanec said.

“Total research expenditures also reflect, to some extent, faculty effort that is devoted to research,” he said.

“What we want to do at Texas Tech is increase our external funding, that is sponsored research that comes from federal agencies, private sources, industry.”

Now that it has achieved this distinction, Schovanec

said the discussion can shift to how Tech can advance its educational experience for students and become known for signature educational experiences the way it’s known for its research.

Researchers in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are using a supercomputer to model zombie outbreaks. The supercomputer, branded the Schoenberg Cluster, runs zombie outbreak simulations in the Lab for the Analysis of Zombie Activity and Research into Undead Simulations, or quite simply LAZARUS. Typically, people visualize zombie outbreaks starting with a single individual. The zombie virus then spreads rapidly and soon the situation is out of control.

John Calhoun, a secondyear mathematics doctoral student and lead researcher for LAZARUS, said such exponential growth in zombie population has indeed been observed during previous studies. Recently, a study conducted in Canada using the partial differential equations model obtained similar results.

However, the simulations from Schoenberg Cluster have offered new insights on zombie outbreaks, Calhoun said.

“We can account for different things when you are simulating as opposed to when you are building equations,” he said, “such as the shape of the room. The differential equations stuff sort of assumes that it’s just one giant field, giant petri dish, whereas that’s not the way that the world is.”

The simulations from the supercomputer predicted an oscillatory behavior in zombie population, which Calhoun said can be attributed to the different types of zombie encounters.

GOP candidates barrel toward Super Tuesday VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Republicans are barreling toward Super Tuesday with another debate in the offing and Donald Trump’s opponents reaching for perhaps their last best chance to knock him off stride for the presidential nomination.

Expect a nasty turn, Trump warned, as if the roiling GOP race were anything but that already.

The New York billionaire predicted that the relative civility between Marco Rubio and himself would fall away in the frantic grasp for hundreds of convention delegates in the 11 states that hold Republican primaries Tuesday.

Even John Kasich, a trailing contender whose calling card has been a positive campaign, went sharply negative Wednesday in a campaign broadside against Rubio, the Florida senator who is soaking up Republican establishment support and thereby threatening to starve Kasich’s effort of its remaining oxygen.

Trump exercised bragging rights with trademark gusto after Nevada handed him his third straight victory the night before.

Relaxed on stage at Virginia’s Regent University, Trump fielded questions from Christian conservative figure Pat Robertson, ticking off Obama administration executive orders he wants to reverse as president and joking about his

recent dustup with the pope.

He said earlier he might tone down his contentious rhetoric if he makes it to the White House — or not, since “right now it seems to be working pretty well.”

And what of Rubio?

“So far he’s been very nice and I think I’ve been very nice to him,” Trump said on NBC’s “Today” show. “We haven’t been in that mode yet but probably it’ll happen.” He meant attack mode.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton scored the endorsement of Nevada’s Harry Reid, the party’s Senate leader, in advance of a primary Saturday in South Carolina, where she looks strong.

She prevailed in the Nevada Democratic caucuses days before the GOP contest there, dulling rival Bernie Sanders’ drive and making Super Tuesday of crucial importance to him.

Republicans will award 595 delegates in 11 state races, with 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Democrats will award 865 delegates in 11 states and American Samoa, with 2,383 needed for the nomination.

The election calendar suggests that if Trump’s rivals don’t slow him by midMarch, they may not ever.

Delegate totals so far: 82 for Trump, 17 for Ted Cruz, 16 for Rubio, 6 for Kasich and 4 for Ben Carson.

“As far as the research we are doing, what we are really doing is we are developing new tools to study disease,” Calhoun said. “Our typical model case is zombie virus.

But the idea is, tools we are developing can be used for any sort of virus.”

The origins of LAZARUS can be traced back more than five years to the time when Williams was teaching an honors calculus class.

Calhoun, a student in his class, asked him about modeling zombie outbreaks. Williams said he told Calhoun what he knew about modeling disease outbreaks at the time. Within a few weeks, Calhoun had written a small piece of code for modeling a zombie outbreak.

Eventually, LAZARUS grew in size, Williams said, later receiving support from National Science Foundation, NVIDIA and Center for Active Learning and Undergraduate Engagement at Tech.

“As an undergraduate, (Calhoun) worked on this,” he said. “He got his master’s degree working on designing the cluster (and) building the computing cluster to run the code.”

Wi t h i n t h e l a s t t w o years, Calhoun has also developed junior and senior level classes that give students an opportunity to test their knowledge using the Schoenberg Cluster.

LAZARUS has created unique opportunities, Calhoun said, because it allows students to learn high-performance computing while actually using a supercomputer.

Moreover, LAZARUS is an integration of several disciplines including mathematics, computer science,

biology, architecture and engineering, he said.

“The goal was to take students who had never done any computing, and by the end, they could program a supercomputer,” he said.

Two students from Calhoun’s class are expected to take over LAZARUS after he leaves. Colton Mikes, a senior mathematics major from Brownwood, and Alexander Clines, a senior mathematics and computer science dual major from Houston, will both continue their education at Tech as graduate students in mathematics.

It will be nice to have a partner to share the new responsibility, Clines said.

“I really do think the supercomputer is a great thing for the math department to have,” he said, “and I truly hope that me and Colton can succeed in keeping it running.”

Schoenberg Cluster forms the centerpiece of LAZARUS, Calhoun said. This supercomputer is a cylindrical structure about 7 feet in height and 3 feet in diameter.

With more than 6,000 feet of cabling and 1,200 solder points, it delivers a processing speed of 150 teraflops, which is almost 40,000 times faster than a desktop computer. At the heart of the Schoenberg Cluster lies a number of Graphic Processing Units that work together to process data.

After coding simulations in Mathematica for several years, Calhoun said he later switched to programming languages such as C, C++ and R. Currently, all zombie simulations for the Schoenberg Cluster are programmed in C++.

“The first code I wrote was very like crayon drawings,” he said. “The stuff we are writing now is much more like fine oil painting.”

Sanders’ tuition plan not feasible

pstart Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and his supporters have one thing in common — they don’t understand, nor do they care, about basic economics.

This is evident throughout Sanders’ platform, but perhaps displayed most prominently in his plan to make college tuition free for all Americans.

This is actually indicative of the millennial generation as a whole —we want everything, but we don’t want to work for any of it. It explains why so many young voters are so attracted to Sanders and his policies.

Clinton needs to reveal speech transcripts

residential candidates must face the mudslinging drama of the U.S. primaries if they want to become the next president, but Hillary Clinton has only herself to blame with her latest speech controversy.

And while some Democrats are pardoning Clinton for her email scandal problems, Clinton’s secret transcripts are a problem everyone needs to be concerned about.

The presidential candidate has come under increasing pressure to release transcripts to the private speeches she gave to various financial institutions, according to a Feb. 12 Time Magazine article by reporter Maya Rhodan. Rhodan says Clinton earned as much as $225,000 for every speech she gave at these institutions, some of which include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley.

Tensions surrounding the issue were once again reignited following remarks made at Tuesday’s CNN Democratic presidential town hall debates. When CNN anchor Chris Cuomo asked Clinton to release the transcripts of speeches, she responded, “Sure, if everybody does it, and that includes the Republicans, because we know they

have made a lot of speeches.”

It makes little sense as to why Clinton should be held to the same standards as other candidates, including Republicans. Yes, Republicans may be taking money and giving speeches to private organizations, and they need to be criticized. Mitt Romney’s leaked 2012 speech, in which he characterized 47 percent of Americans as entitled moochers, gave us a taste of what might go on in Republican private speeches, but Clinton’s dilemma is special because she has repeatedly discussed how she will whip Wall Street corporations and banks into place.

On her official website, HillaryClinton.com, she describes how she will break down large banks, impose new taxes and generally hold higher-ranking officials more accountable when they break the law. Now, perhaps I am being a little paranoid, but given these huge promises she is making to crack down

on these huge corporations, it seems incredibly suspicious she is taking money from these firms while giving private speeches. Now she is being pressed to release her transcripts and suddenly she cries foul, demanding the Republican candidates release their records, too.

Instead of proving she has nothing to hide, Clinton acts like she has been caught red-handed in some scandal.

Clinton implies voters are scrutinizing her campaign more than other candidates, but Clinton is also the only candidate who has an ongoing FBI investigation into her affairs, according to a Wednesday Fox News article.

Clinton is a smart woman, undoubtedly, which is why it should be obvious why voters

have some trust issues she needs to work out.

Until Clinton releases her speech transcripts, the only message I can believe from her is that I cannot trust her. Republican candidates may not be releasing their speech records either, but they are also not the candidates talking about cracking down on the companies they are taking money from. For example, Ted Cruz may be taking millions of dollars from billionaire oil barons, as seen in the July 27, 2015, article, “Billionaire brothers give Cruz Super PAC $15 million,” but Cruz’s ties to the oil industry are obvious.

Clinton, however, is taking money from corporations she swears she will penalize. Unless she can prove otherwise, it really doesn’t make sense to trust Clinton.

As Clinton continues to stall on releasing her transcripts, it becomes increasingly obvious the speech’s content will be hurtful to her campaign. She is right in saying each candidate should publish their private speech transcripts, but if she truly believes that, she should go first in revealing her transcripts. jmiller@dailytoreador.com

Student debt is a growing problem as the cost of attending college skyrockets, so it’s an easy plan to get behind, especially for students who are taking out loans to pay all those expenses. What they don’t understand is what a terrible idea it really is.

The first lesson of economics is there is no such thing as a free lunch. You can’t just wave a magic wand, say, “Abracadabra,” and something is automatically free. A litany of consequences will result from such a measure.

Sanders claims he will pay for his free tuition and free health care plans by raising taxes on the billionaire class and Wall Street, but there’s simply no way to tax those people enough to pay for everything Sanders wants.

So let’s assume the federal government won’t be able to cover the difference, because it won’t.

With tuition money no longer coming in, colleges and universities will suddenly take a huge hit with their revenue streams. They cannot simply go into perpetual debt like the U.S. government apparently can, so they have two options — find extra revenue or cut expenses.

penses, and most likely cut them drastically. This is where students would begin to take notice of the effect of this halfbaked plan.

Colleges and universities would have to lay off faculty and staff and then cut salaries of the ones they keep, so classes would be taught less frequently and would be larger in size. They would also cut services drastically, meaning many things students enjoy — free events on campus, a nice Rec Center, support services, etc. — could be on the chopping block.

Construction would come to a halt, so new buildings could not be built and old buildings could not be updated or expanded to meet that department’s needs.

Because research can often bring funding, even more emphasis would be placed on research than education, further weakening the education students receive.

Plus, a college degree would not really have much value if it were free. More importantly, students would not place much value in that degree when they barely value their “free” high school education.

It was Thomas Paine who said, “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: tis dearness only that gives everything its value.” Taking away the cost will undoubtedly remove its value.

This is actually indicative of the millennial generation as a whole — we want everything, but we don’t want to work for any of it. It explains why so many young voters are so attracted to Sanders and his policies. He preys on the ignorance of young voters (and some not-so-young voters) to drive his campaign.

I’m not saying it’s great that college is so expensive, because it’s not. We should definitely be trying to find ways to make it more affordable and reduce students’ dependence on loans. But there is simply no feasible way to make it free while also maintaining the value of the degree and of the institutions that grant the degrees.

Sanders is selling something that sounds great in the abstract, but through implementation would be a disaster.

Rushing to adulthood, or even pursing it at all is a counterproductive endeavor.

So often, we think that acting our age signals maturity and display a well-adjusted disposition. However, the reality is many of us spent our whole childhood craving the glorified image of adulthood we’ve framed in our hearts, only to find that, once reached, adulthood falls short of all it is promised to be.

This sounds unintentionally cynical and melancholy, so let me rephrase it. While each new stage of life brings great adventure, new freedoms and richer wisdom, it also brings great trials, less forgiveness and heavier burdens. Fun is often adulterated and peace is

often sacrificed to productivity.

However, (here’s that optimism I missed originally), this doesn’t have to be our reality.

We will watch as our siblings and our future children are rushed along to an early social maturity thanks to the abundance of technology and networking tools they are swaddled in. Our generation, however, still remembers riding a bike to the park on a crystal clear Texas day. We still remember sitting on cool cement driveways, covered in chalk, autographing the

ground. We still remember those Saturday morning cartoons that trapped us in our pajamas until lunchtime.

There is more to childhood than all of that, though. Our friendships were different; they were more authentic and less of an effort. They developed naturally based on sheer willingness to participate in the adventure of the day. Our goals were more present. We lived each second for what it was worth and approached the next with flexible aspirations.

So now, as we dance on the cusp of adulthood, I think it is vital to argue in favor pursuing a Neverland-like life — refusing to grow up like Disney’s “Peter Pan.” The malleable perspective, optimistic heart and forgiving soul that we are bargaining to trade for a starched shirt and satin tie

For three years, I worked every single week with preschoolers. As an intern in my church’s Children’s Ministry, I spent five hours every Sunday teaching three, four and five-year-olds about Jesus. I didn’t expect that they would learn much from me, especially because most of them were on a sugar high from their sprinkled donut of a breakfast.

But I really didn’t expect that I would learn so much from them. While coloring pictures of frogs and sharks and princesses, I would hear silly stories about the funny thing their mother said when she spilled coffee on herself or how dinner at grandma’s house was going have cake with chocolate frosting.

However, I also saw them start each day anew, I saw them forgive fearlessly and I saw them encourage each other earnestly. I saw them grapple with understanding the Gospel just like they fought to keep from fidgeting during story time. I saw them run to their parents excitedly, refreshed by their presence.

I saw them endlessly entertained with the playground they had known for years, never tiring of its familiarity. I saw them decorate their days with joy and positivity. I saw that I had much to relearn from those preschoolers.

There is just something so idealistic about the perspective we adopt in our adolescence.

And sometimes we might lose sight of that point of view, but last night while eating chocolate chip cookies and

Professors conduct research for anti-cancer drugs

By MICHAELA BAYSINGER Staff Writer

The Texas Tech Health Sciences Cancer Center was established in 2008 and was created to provide a research center for the School of Medicine and the entire South Plains region.

One of the main focuses of the Cancer Center is conducting laboratory and clinical research that develops new anticancer drugs for both adults and children with difficult-totreat cancers. The core faculty that works in the center is working on drug development, Dr. Patrick Reynolds, director of the Cancer Center, said.

“I am currently working on several different projects here in the Cancer Center,” Dr. Min H. Kang, an associate professor at the Health Sciences Center, said. “Mostly whatever I do is mostly related to pediatric cancers. Two of the pediatric cancers I am involved in are neuroblastoma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, for short.”

The ALL project has been in process since 2005, Kang said. There are approximately 2,500 new cases of ALL every year. Most patients will be cured, but about 15 percent of those patients who were high risk will die of the cancer.

This cancer is the most common in children, she said.

“What I am trying to find out is are there any drugs that could eradicate ALL cancer and then, secondly, what is the drug resistance mechanism in those patients,” Kang said.

“They go through a lot of heavy chemotherapy treatments and they still do not respond.

We want to find out what is causing the drug resistance in those patients and what are alternative options for them.”

Other projects she is working on are pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics, Kang said. The pharmacokinetics project has been in process since 2011.

Pharmacokinetics is measuring the drug levels and how that drug metabolizes in the patient, Kang said.

Pharmacodynamics studies what is causing the variations and pharmacogenomics is the screening of the patient’s geodes to see the effects of the cancer.

“I study the relation of pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics and then the information for the treatment is the outcome,” she said.

Currently, the Cancer Center is working on solving what is causing the drug resistance, Kang said. She looks at who is responding to the drugs and who is not.

The research team has almost found the cause, and all that is left is wrapping up a few final experiments and then writing the manuscript.

The center brings new drugs from the laboratory to the clinic and works with the drugs in preclinical testing, does formulation development, gets the drugs into phase one trials and into later phase trials, Reynolds said.

When the drug is successful, it can go to the Food and Drug Administration to be put into the market so it can be used to treat patients.

“Another method to try and eradicate cancer in someone’s body is to take two different

types of drugs and to use them at the same time. We have amazing results of this in many different cases of cancer in children and adults,” Reynolds said. “Drug combination work is some of our top work that we do.”

The current drug the Cancer Center is working on has been successful in killing a type of adult lung cancer and childhood neuroblastoma, which is one of the deadliest childhood cancers, Reynolds said.

“We are primarily pediatric oncologists, but because you can’t develop drugs for children without guardian consent due to ethical issues and since adults get cancer too, we do about half of our work in adult oncology as well,” he said.

The Cancer Center grows the cancer cells in test tubes and uses forensic technology to test the cells to identify which type of cancer each cell is and match them to the patient, Reynolds said. They are used as a core investigator.

The Center maintains a database that is one of the largest in the country. It is full of the profiles of those different models of cancer and their molecular fingerprint, which is like a DNA fingerprint, he said. This effort was initially supported by a donor in Los Angeles who moved to Lubbock, and then Tech got it approved by the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, or CPRIT. “The Cancer Center also hosts the Operations Center and laboratories for the Texas Center Cell Repository, a CPRIT-funded collabora-

The Cancer Center has a program in which patients who have died from cancer can donate their blood with the cancer cells in it to the Cancer Research Center for them to able to research ways to construct different drugs to kill those cancer cells.

The Cancer Center is a part of the South Plains Oncology Consortium, according to its website.

The SPOC is a regional consortium devoted to conducting early phase oncology trials and translational can-

cer research, according to its website. A major goal of SPOC is to improve access for new anti-cancer drugs to patients in West Texas and the surrounding region.

“The institutions that are members to SPOC are the Children’s Cancer Hospital, Cook Children’s Medical Center, UT Southwestern Medical School’s Cancer Center and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center,” Reynolds said.

The Cancer Center currently is having funding issues. CPRIT has had a funding cut and has not been able to give as many grants, he said. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is one of the largest organizations in the country to help fund research for childhood cancer.

“The organization was

started by a girl named Alex who had neuroblastoma to raise funds for research for a cure for cancer,” Reynolds said. “Alex’s Lemonade Stand raises more money than just about anybody.”

The Cancer Center receives funding through grants from the state and the federal government, which are given based off the research the Center does and how well the preclinical and testing of the drugs go, he said.

“Parents have come to us asking if they could help by donating funds to us. While this is appreciated, we always want them to check with where their children are getting treated first,” Reynolds said, “to see how that institution is doing on funds and to always donate to them first.” @MBaysingerDT

Senate leader Harry Reid endorses Hillary Clinton WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, calling her the “right person to be the first woman president” and lead the nation.

“She has a proven record of accomplishment and has the ability to fight partisan Republican gridlock and get things done for the American people,” the Nevada Democrat said in a statement. “I look forward to doing everything in my power to ensure Secretary Clinton becomes the next president of the United States.”

Reid has remained neutral in his party’s primary as Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders fight for the nomination. His endorsement

comes four days after Clinton won his state’s caucuses. Reid participated but voted as “uncommitted,” saying he would remain neutral in the competition so he could not be accused of rigging the caucuses.

The high-profile endorsement is a boost to Clinton and comes from the most senior Democrat in the Senate.

Clinton also has secured the backing of Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, the assistant Democratic leader in the House.

The former first lady, New York senator and Secretary of State narrowly won Iowa, suffered a doubledigit loss to Sanders in New Hampshire and prevailed in Nevada. She leads in public polls ahead of Saturday’s South Carolina primary.

The facade of the building will have a portal influenced by the Spanish renaissance, he said. There will also be a large marble art piece, started in January, by Colorado artist Frank Swanson.

“It’s a full renovation,” Molina said, “basement, first/

second floor completely tore everything out down to the substructure of concrete and installed all new utilities, infrastructure and of course, finishes for Dean (Al) Sacco’s vision for the Maddox Engineering Research Center.”

The entire building will have an automatic fire suppression system with an annunciator system in every space, he said, installed in compliance with both the Texas state fire marshal and the campus fire marshal.

“There’s a couple of unique spaces designed specifically for certain functions — whether it’s testing earth materials, concrete materials, steel materials — and they all have their own little nuance, if you will,” Molina said.

There are wet labs and material testing areas in the building that have enhanced coverage from the fire suppression system, Molina said.

All the standard hazardous material procedures will also be in place.

Two National Academy of Engineering researchers will be in the Maddox Engineering Research Center, and they will each initially have three individuals working for them, Al Sacco Jr., dean of the Edward E. Whitacre College of Engineering, said.

The two National Academy of Engineering researchers are Chau-Chyun Chen working on energy in general and Danny Reible working on water, Sacco said.

“And of course, water in the southwest plains is not only important for energy — fracking, for example, and power plants — but it’s also just, you know, you need water to live — so that’s a very critical area,” he said.

Though those two areas are the main research areas, the basement will be a joint user facility that will be used university wide, as well as across Texas and New Mexico, Sacco said.

“It is an 80,000 square foot building, and in the basement, which is about 25,000 square feet, we’ll have a state-of-the-

art materials characterization center that will be better than anything in Texas,” he said.

It will be able to characterize many different types of materials, whether organic or inorganic, Sacco said, and is intended to be user friendly for the university and industry around Lubbock.

“So that’s a major undertaking for this university, and will probably be one of the top research facilities — certainly at Texas Tech, but also probably will rival anything in the state of Texas,” he said.

The Sept. 15 opening day of this $30 million project is the birth date of Jack Maddox, one of the original founders of the Maddox foundation who gave the primary naming donation, Sacco said. @JBowles_DT

Climate Science Center collaborates in research

Climate science has been a growing field in recent years, and scientists around the world are involved in different aspects of climate research.

The Climate Science Center at Texas Tech conducts research on the different effects of climate variability in diverse environments of the South Central U.S., according to the CSC website, and it serves as a regional hub for research on climate change.

The CSC is part of the South Central Climate Center, according to the website, and it is supported by several partners, including the University of Oklahoma, Louisiana S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y, T h e Chickasaw Nation, The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

Sarah Fritts, a research assistant professor in natural resources management, said the center brings together a diverse group of researchers, including the faculty on the Tech campus.

“We have many different disciplines at the Climate Science Center,” she said.

“There’s a few of us in the natural resources department, of course the political science department,” she said. “We have one of the co-directors, Dr. (John) Zak, who is in the Col-

lege of Arts and Sciences, then everything from atmospheric science to English.

We’re definitely a pretty well-rounded group.”

The Tech faculty conducts research in many different fields of study, according to the CSC website, including soil processes, climate modeling, rural economic preparedness, water policy and many others. This information is then used to make decisions for realworld application in the Southern Plains.

Fritts started as a postdoctoral research assistant last year, she said, and while her original focus was on lesser prairie chickens, she now works on a variety of different research projects with many

different wildlife species.

“One thing I’m very interested in is how energy development, particularly renewable energy, affects wildlife populations,” she said.

J e n n i f e r Va n o s , a s sistant professor in atmospheric science, said she focused on human biometeorology and human bioclimatology.

“I’m looking at the impact of weather and climate on people and their health,” she said. “I’m interested in what’s going on now, how extreme heat and air pollution are impacting people in urban areas and then what are we going to see in the future and how are we going to prepare for that.”

In order to solve climate issues, Vanos said

it is important for researchers to collaborate.

Because the researchers have their own areas of expertise, individuals can develop specific models and work that can then be put together to create a well-developed body of knowledge that can be used for applications in the real world.

The contributing members of the CSC meet to discuss various topics twice a month, Fritts said, and some of the members also host symposiums to bring outside speakers to contribute to the conversation about climate change.

Fritts runs a symposium called Science by the Glass once a month at the Fox and Hound, she said, and the local community is in-

vited to come out and listen to a speaker.

“It gives the community the chance to see what us Texas Tech researchers are doing and also to just discuss some of the issues that we’re presenting at the seminar,” she said.

“There are definitely a lot of opportunities for us to get together and discuss ideas and opportunities.”

The CSC does a variety of other outreach events to get the message about sustainability out to the public, Vanos said, and it also has a data portal where people can find data sets that can be used for their research.

Although the CSC is a consortium of many different partners in the region, Fritts said it is beneficial for the Center to be at Tech because of the environmental challenges the unique ecosystem has.

“It’s great that we have it at Texas Tech because the Southern High Plains represents an area that is really being challenged by climate change because there is a lot of agriculture, but then there’s also the overall underlying aquifer that’s being depleted by some of the agricultural practices that are happening,” she said.

Lubbock is also home to USGS, a wind energy facility, the Lubbock Water Science Center field office and other environmental organizations, and Fritts said these resources give the Center a platform to discuss prevalent climate change issues.

“The more that we can do to provide the evidence base to show people this is what we’re seeing and this is what we could see and these are the ranges,” Vanos said. “It’s all about just the numbers and the facts — we don’t to want put something out there that we’re not sure about.

I try not to get into politics or social stance or religion or anything like that because to me, in my work, whether we’re going to see rising temperatures in the future or not, reducing air pollution and extreme heat is important no matter what.”

There is nothing wrong with reducing the amount of pollution that children a r e e x p o s e d t o , Va n o s said, and everyone should be on board with doing so.

Albert Einstein once said humans cannot solve problems with the same thinking they used to create them, Vanos said, and resolving the negative effects of climate change requires higher-level thinking, more interdisciplinary collaboration and making sure that solving one problem does not create another.

“In my opinion, (climate change) is one of the biggest challenges that we as humans, and also just ecosystems as a whole, face today,” she said. “It’s accelerating pretty rapidly, and I think finding solutions is going to take a variety of approaches from people with all kinds of expertise.” @JenRomeroDT

Innovation Hub provides space for businesses, students

The Innovation Hub at Texas Tech was opened on Aug. 5, 2015, and it is a building that promotes research business entrepreneurship and collaboration between students and the Lubbock community.

The hub is a 40,000 square foot building, located at 3911 4th Street, with offices, lab space with the ability to be bio s a f e t y le v e l 2 on b o t h floors, a multi-purpose room that can be divided in sections or open all together, and several common areas for lounging and the sharing of ideas.

The spirit of the Innovation Hub is one that encourages students, members of the Lubbock community and estab lished business owners to reach out to one another and develop partnerships with each other.

“When the concept first started, it was definitely going to be completely tenant based and rented and now we’ve pulled in more student presence, which was a big aim of Dr. Robert Duncan, the senior vice president of research, and Dr. (M. Duane) Nellis when he was the president,” Carrie Romo, the interim director for the Innovation Hub, said.

The Innovation Hub is a little more than half full with six leased tenants, five of which are businesses and the other the Texas Tech Accelerator,

which is a program out of the Office of Research and Commercialization that specializes in helping students launch their startup companies.

Several of the tenants are companies that needed office and lab space to work here in Lubbock such as Chromatin, a company that specializes in Sorghum research, whose corporate headquarters is located in Chicago.

Other companies are ones that have brought part of their research here to work with students on the Tech campus like Noise Figure Research, which is a company out of Seattle that works on engineering services and does research with engineers at Tech.

Although several companies have taken advantage of the space available in the Innovation Hub, it is also open to Tech students for commercial opportunities.

“One of the things people don’t think about is that most of the licensing and the stuff that is on campus is educational and you can’t make money off of that,” Dustin Delano, administrator in the Office of Vice President for Research, said.

Delano said there are several spaces in the facility that can be accessed by students and used to work on whatever type of project they choose to.

One of these spaces is a small makers space that can be used for facilitating

rapid prototyping, which will be called Rapid Prototyping at Research Park.

The hope is to get spaces like this and expand them with new high-end equipment, such as more 3-D printers, laser cutters and high-end computers for tenants to use.

“It’s not intended for you to make a profit making and selling your prototype or designing something for your own business, so that’s why that space is really out there and just to learn to give it an easy fail easy learn environment,” Delano said.

One of the events the Innovation Hub plans on hosting is a 3-Day Startup, which is an event in which entrepreneurs get together and create a startup company in three days.

The Innovation Hub has also started hosting One Million Cups conferences every Wednesday, which is where local business owners and entrepreneurs talk about their stories and experiences to other companies and local community members.

The Innovation Hub is currently planned to only use the first of six buildings, Romo said, and as more tenants fill the building, Tech wants to be able to allow more businesses to join in on the research and business opportunities and open more buildings for use.

crease the city’s economy and stop students from going to bigger cities like Austin or San Antonio for business opportunities, she said.

People who lease a space at the Innovation Hub are required to have a connection to the university, she said. “(An example is) a large company that is doing research with people on campus, or they are hiring interns off of campus,” Romo said.

The Innovation Hub has an online access form in order to be granted access to the building and space, which any Tech stu-

dent with entrepreneurial or innovation interest can fill out.

“You start off with the base camp access, which is the student meeting area,” Delano said. “The objective there is the collaborations, because Texas Tech may not be the one to start that idea and a lot of the time students aren’t even ready to really pitch it.”

Students often find that they need more help than they expect when they are starting a company or developing a business plan, Delano said.

“They really just want someone to say, ‘OK have

you ever done a pitch?

Have you looked at this?

Or what is your market validation strategy? What do you need?’ And a lot of what happens is they get with either older students or 3-Day Startup or the different pitch competitions that are out there, and they start to get fed into those presentations and that information and once they learn that it cascades up,” he said. “The Innovation Hub is the building, it doesn’t really offer that training, but the events that are hosted out here is how the student goes about that.” @RyanOrtegonDT

One Million Cups promotes collaboration

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, the Innovation Hub hosted its first 1 Million Cups event in Lubbock to inspire local businesses and entrepreneurs in the local community.

One Million Cups is a national program that helps businesses reach out to other businesses and learn from real life success stories. Currently it is an organization that has flourished in 84 communities around the nation.

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which is a foundation that centers on promoting entrepreneurial success, created the 1 Million Cups weekly learning sessions.

“One Million Cups is an educational program, and they call it 1 Million Cups because the Kauffman Foundation said if we can ever get a million entrepreneurs together once a week drinking a cup of coffee, then we’ll see businesses expand and grow in the United States,” Jennifer B. Horn, the director of Translational Research and

Entrepreneurialism, said.

At a weekly 1 Million Cups meeting, local businesses gather in a conference room to listen to two speakers who present a six-minute speech about their successes and their journeys toward making their businesses a reality. After the presenters’ speeches, the crowd participates in a 15 to 20-minute Q&A session where they can ask questions or give feedback on how to improve the presenters’ businesses.

Christi Brooks, an acquisition editor and owner of Chaplain Publishing, was the first presenter to speak at the inaugural 1 Million Cups meeting for Lubbock, and she said she heard what the event was about and was more than happy to share her story.

“Just the process of preparing to speak really got me thinking about my business and what I needed to do differently and so that helped,” she said. “Being able to connect with some people in here has really been beneficial.”

Brooks said she thinks it is beneficial not only to her

business but also to other businesses as well to get more professional connections.

“I think it’s nice to just know that you’re not alone, because so much in business you feel like I am the only one who struggles with this, I am terrible at my job because I can’t do this one aspect, but then you hear other people struggle with similar things,” she said. “It is just kind of encouraging to know that we are all kind of in the same boat trying to build our business the best we can.”

Horn said she wanted to bring the program to Lubbock to improve the business communication of the city.

“I found out about the program probably about a year ago, and my job with Texas Tech is to grow an entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus and in the surrounding community. I had seen this program and just thought that it was a great way to connect entrepreneurs in Lubbock,” she said. “What I found when I first started talking to local entrepreneurs, they were really isolated, and what I saw was that this program would

Director of Texas Music Office in Austin promotes industry AUSTIN (AP) — Texas Music Office director Brendon Anthony is ready to put some “runs on the board.”

That was the challenge Anthony laid out last summer, as he traveled the state to introduce himself as the first new leader of the office in over two decades.

The Dallas Morning News reports the goal at that time was to listen and learn from industry experts — about 1,100 of

them so far.

But even then, people were pining for substantive results. And now Anthony can share some.

“When I traveled around my answers could only be, ‘I’m hearing you.’” said Anthony, who’s trying to tie the office more to economic development. “Now I can go back to those people and say: ‘I’ve heard you. I feel like our office can be most effective in these ways.’”

Anthony, who used to play fiddle for country star Pat Green, took over the gig last February from longtime director Casey Monahan.

And though Anthony admitted that “change is never an easy thing,” he said that it’s “often a very positive thing.”

With more than 6,600 miles logged on Anthony’s SUV in the last 12 months, here’s a look at three things the music office has been working on:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama paid tribute Wednesday to Ray Charles and the late singer-songwriter’s unmistakable “singular sound” that the president said continues to influence generations of musicians.

Obama noted that Charles grew up in the segregated South, his early years colored by poverty and tragedy. But, the president said, Charles had two things working in his favor: a strong mother and music.

He quoted Charles as once saying that he was born with music inside of him and noted that Charles’ career encompassed every genre, including jazz, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, country and soul.

“Whatever genre of music he was playing, there was no mistaking his singular sound: that virtuoso piano playing that matched that one-of-a-kind voice,” Obama said at the White House, where he and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a taping of “Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles: In Performance at the White House.”

“Even as a young man, he had the rich, raw honey tone of an old soul,” Obama said.

Calling Charles one of his musical favorites, Obama said that whether a person was overcome by feelings of love, longing or loss, “Ray Charles had the rare ability to collapse our weightiest emotions into a single note.”

“He couldn’t see us, but we couldn’t take our eyes off of him,” the president said.

Usher, Demi Lovato, gospel singer Yolanda Adams and The Band Perry were among a group of contemporary artists who performed Charles’ music for an audience that included some of the musician’s children, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Usher performed “Georgia On My Mind,” one of Charles’ most-recognized hits, along with “What I’d Say,” which brought the audience to its feet.

“We’re going to have a lot of lasts coming up,” she said earlier Wednesday during a student workshop with some of the performers. “And this is the last of one of my favorite events of all time. So we figured we’ve got to go out with a bang, right?”

The Obamas have hosted more than a dozen “In Performance” events, including the tribute to Charles.

Early run not enough for Lady Raiders

The Texas Tech women’s basketball team was fueled by a 16-0 run in the first quarter, but it was not enough as No. 8 Texas ended up winning the game 76-55 Wednesday night in the United Supermarkets Arena.

Tech coach Candi Whitaker said they surprised Texas at the beginning of the game, but the Longhorns never abandoned their game plan.

“We played well in pockets, obviously, to start the game.

The first quarter was probably the best we’ve played,” she said. “But we weren’t able to maintain it, turned it over too much in the second.”

The Longhorns jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the game but the Lady Raiders immediately responded with a 9-0 run in less than a minute of game time.

They eventually stretched the run to 16-0 to take a 16-7 lead. Freshman guard Japreece Dean and junior guard Ivonne CookTaylor accounted for all 16 of the points. Dean also dropped two assists and two steals.

The first quarter ended with Tech leading 23-16 and shooting nearly 65 percent.

“I feel like we had a spark.

We were feeling it and the energy was high,” Dean said.

“So I feel like that spark helped everybody out.”

The Lady Raiders made only one shot from the field and were outscored 22-5 in the second period. Texas regained the lead and took a 38-28 lead into the locker room halfway through the game.

Turnovers became an issue in the period as Tech committed 13 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Longhorns continued to extend their double-digit lead to take a

56-38 lead after three quarters.

Texas used its clear size advantage to dominate Tech in the paint and offensive rebounding. After the third period, the Longhorns scored 36 points in the paint compared to the eight points for the Lady Raiders.

The fourth quarter had the smallest scoring difference between the two teams, but Texas’ margin continued to widen as they outscored Tech 20-17.

Freshman forward Zuri Sanders earned her first start of the season, according to the Tech Athletics website, and saw 28 minutes of action.

Despite strong efforts from CookTaylor and Dean, the team shot only 31 percent in the second half.

CookTaylor finished with 15 points, but turned the ball over five times. Dean scored a gamehigh 17 points, five assists and two steals as she continued to make her case for Big 12 Con-

said. “It’s hard. She’s really accepted that challenge. I’m proud of the year she’s had and the growth she’s made.”

Tech softball makes trip for doubleheader

The Texas Tech softball team continues its gauntlet of top-level competition with a trip to Louisiana against two ranked opponents. Tech begins its trip with a stop at the home stadium of Louisiana Lafayette for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. today at Lamson Park.

After the one-day stop at Lafayette, the Red Raiders face Illinois State and the Louisiana State Tigers on Friday and once again on Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

Illinois, on the other hand, has only three wins to its seven losses. In its first two tournaments, Tech accumulated a 4-6 record and went 1-3 against ranked opponents.

Coach Adrian Gregory said looking back to Tech’s 1-4 finish in its last tournament, Tech panicked at the lack of disparity versus tough competition.

“I think that we weren’t at our best and we didn’t win,” Gregory said. “Great teams are not at their best

and still win, and we didn’t do that.”

Tech’s lone win against a nationally ranked opponent came in a 2-0 shutout against then-No. 20 California on Saturday.

After making seven appearances in relief, junior right-handed pitcher Mattison Maisel threw a complete game and gave up just three hits.

Maisel’s shutout of California shrunk her ERA to 0.71 after eight appearances on the pitcher’s circle and 19 innings of work.

In her first start of the season, Maisel said she felt in control of the game.

Backing Maisel’s solid performance, senior cen-

ter fielder Jordan Bettiol provided Maisel the run support she needed with a two-run single down the middle in the sixth inning.

Although the Red Raiders have not achieved the results they desire, Gregory said the team has gained experience facing a stacked set of games.

“We’re competing well with those guys. We may not finish, but some we do,” she said. “I think we’re learning what we need to learn though those things.”

LSU and Lafayette present the Red Raiders the challenge of overcoming both strong pitching and

consistent power hitting.

In their first tournaments of the season, LSU and Lafayette posted batting averages above .350, with the Rajin’ Cajuns hitting for .372 and the Tigers .356, according to a NCAA news release.

As Gregory pointed out at the start of the season, the teams Tech faces act as an intense readiness plan for the Big 12 Conference.

“I believe that if we consistently see this kind of pitching, any type of pitching we see further on we’ll just be more and more prepared,” Gregory said. @DGaytanDT
