The second annual TEDxTexasTechUniversity conference will take place Saturday in the Allen Theatre in the Student Union building and organizers are helping the spread of ideas by asking the question, “What if?” The mission of TED is to spread ideas in the fields of technology, entertainment and design, according to the TED website, and it is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that exists to spark conversation. Lisa DuBois Low, assistant professor of practice in the Department of Public Relations and TEDxTexasTechUniversity communications committee chair, said the organization started in 1984 as a West Coast initiative using new media. “Now stop and pause for a second. Think about 1984,” she said. “No cell phone, no
such thing as iTunes really, it was just on the cusp of a big revolution in terms of personal computing. Once new media came along it was easier to spread these great ideas.” TED talks are 18 minute-or-less segments that discuss an idea specific to a person, she said. These talks include people from a community as well as others who are more famous. It can cost thousands of dollars to attend a live TED event now, she said, so through the growth process, TEDx conferences began. “So when they started doing this TEDx, and x stands for independent, so you have to get a license, you have to apply to TED to be licensed and host a TEDx event at your location,” Low said. “It doesn’t cost anything, but it’s quite an application and we had a couple people who spearheaded that for Texas Tech University.” After the application is received and the li-
cense is approved, the committee then decides on a theme and recruits speakers, she said. Last year, she said, the theme was Open Skies, Open Minds, mimicking the open skies of West Texas and the ideas that are spread through TEDx. This year, however, after much brainstorming, the committee decided on the question “What if?” as a theme. “So you have to recruit the speakers, you have to decide how long the event is,” Low said. “They are unpaid. However, some of the higher profile speakers, we have the option to use conference fees to pay for their travel so it makes it a little more attractive.” Low said the committee had 70 applicants this year for speakers. Not only do those chosen get the opportunity to share their ideas on the Tech stage, she said, but there is also a possibility these videos will be picked up by the main TED stage as well.
