Texas Tech professors discuss White House, media relations
By REECE NATIONS Staff Writer
On Jan. 21, Sean Spicer made his first official statement to the press as White House press secretary in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room located in the West Wing of the White House in Washington, D.C. Spicer's briefing was an incendiary response to negative press coverage of President Donald Trump's inauguration. In the briefing, Spicer said journalists and news outlets deliberately released inaccurate information in order to lessen the enthusiasm of Trump's inauguration, which had occurred the day before. In his statements, Spicer called attempts to diminish public enthusiasm for the inauguration "shameful and wrong." "This sort of defensive attitude towards media is unique to who Donald Trump is," Seth McKee, an associate professor of political science, said. "He is deeply concerned with his image, as many presidents have been in the past."

he No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders swept the four-game series against Cal Golden Bears on Sunday, defeating them, 11-2, in the final game of the series. Tech previously beat Cal, 4-2, on Friday and then went on to defeat the Golden Bears in the doubleheader on Saturday, 5-1 and 3-2. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Erikson Lanning started on the mound for the Red Raiders. He threw five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Junior left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek came up with the save after sitting out during the 2015-2016 season because of an injury. “It was awesome just because I was there the last time he threw for Tech in the Big 12 tournament my freshman year,” junior infielder Michael Davis said, “and getting to watch him go through what he has and get back out there and compete and throw is one of the best things to see.” Freshman right-handed pitcher Rogelio Reyes took the mound for Cal on Saturday. Reyes pitched four innings for Cal allowing four hits and four runs. Senior infielder Hunter Hargrove had the hot bat against Cal with three hits and two runs in five at-bats. Hargrove also came up with the only home run of the game to

While being deeply concerned with one's image is not unique to Trump's presidency, it is notable that Trump's administration has a reputation for providing provably false information to support its cause, McKee said. According to PolitiFact’s Truth-O-Meter, Trump has made 259 statements that were labeled either mostly false, false or "pants on fire” since announcing his candidacy. Trump's claims regarding instances of voter fraud in California, New Hampshire and Virginia have been rebutted by news outlets such as CNN, The Boston Globe and The New York Times. In response, Trump and members of his administration have repeatedly labeled news outlets as "biased," "dishonest" and "fake news." "Spicer's combative posture during these press briefings signal that the White House is on the defensive," McKee said. "This can be taken as a reflection on the president himself since his press secretary acts as a direct messenger between the Oval Office and the media."

propel Tech to the win. “It was 2-2 at that time, and on my first atbat, I struck out,” Hargrove said. “So, that time with the runners on base, I was just trying to go up there and have a good at-bat and try to make contact and just score the guys that got out in front of me. Luckily, I did that.” In the top of the first, Lanning walked sophomore Golden Bear outfielder Jonah Davis to put a man on first with no outs. Junior infielder Denis Karas came up to bat, but was thrown out at first for out No. 2. The hit to center field from sophomore designated hitter Tanner Dodson brought Jonah Davis home to put Cal up, 1-0. Freshman outfielder Grant Little was up to bat first and was walked to put him on first base. Junior infielder Michael Davis got up to bat and hit a triple, which sent Little home to tie the game, 1-1. With Michael Davis on third, junior infielder Tanner Gardner stepped up to the plate and was walked. This put Red Raiders on first and third with only one out as junior designated hitter Zach Rheams was up to bat. Gardner stole second to put runners in scoring position. Rheams hit a fly ball to left field, which resulted in two outs as the first inning ended, 1-1.

We Banjo 3, a band that plays different arrangements of Irish and American folk songs, will perform as a part of the Presidential Lecture & Performance Series at 7 p.m. Friday in the Allen Theatre of the Student Union Building. This performance is part of We Banjo 3’s tour around the U.S.,
David Howley, a singer and guitarist for the band, said. Through this tour, the band wanted to find unique venues to play in, including performance halls and outdoor music festivals. “We didn’t just want to be a band that played in a pub every weekend,” Howley said. “We are looking for different avenues, different things we can do.”
