n the morning when students enter the bathrooms in their residence halls, one of the first things they may notice is how clean it is. This is due to the work and dedication of the custodial staff, whose main goal is to make Tech students feel more at home through their servitude and hard work. Paula Hernandez, the lead custodian for Murray Hall from Mexico, said she first decided to work for Tech because a friend recommended it as a great place to work. “I was working for this other place for 23 years,” Hernandez said. “I was talking to one of the (people) who work here and I asked her if she knew if they were hiring (at Tech).” Now, she said she is proud to work at Tech and enjoys her job. Hernandez said she tries to engage with all the students she encounters on a daily basis. She knows many of the students by name, and she said most students are friendly and want to engage. Hernandez’s purpose is not only to make the students happy, but also to keep the residence halls clean so they feel comfortable in their “home away from home,” she said. “Make them feel like they are at their house and that they have a family. Sometimes there’s stress, they have tests and everything,” she said. “I think if we smile a lot and talk with them a little bit, they will

Maedgen Theatre expansion brings new facilities for students, faculty By ADÁN RUBIO Staff Writer
With the construction at the Texas Tech Charles E. Maedgen Jr. Theatre, which is located at 2812 18th St. on campus, some people may wonder what to expect after the expansion is completed. Whether it be the facilities it may provide or the opportunities for different performances, the addition of the Theatre and Dance Complex to the Maedgen Theatre could contribute to the campus in different ways. Despite the expected comple-
tion date for the expansion being March 11, according to the Tech System Facilities Planning and Construction website, FP&C Vice Chancellor Billy Breedlove said the actual completion of the expansion will take place later. “It’s probably going to be midApril,” he said. “We’ve had, obviously, quite a bit of weather. We’ve had a lot of weather in the winter months, then we had the big snow that hit and of course a lot of wind conditions.”
