t was in the middle of the song “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” that a couple sitting in the front row of the audience started swaying their shoulders and singing along with the chorale. The upbeat tune had the entire room of the Legacy Event Center humming and dancing in their seats. A 1940s cabaret was the theme of the night on Saturday evening as the Lubbock Chorale hosted its 40th year anniversary gala for the group. When The Daily Toreador first met up with the chorale, it had only been a few weeks into rehearsing its performances and drawn up the figures as to who would sing what. Its regular 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night practices were filled, and it seemed that most of the members of the group attended — of course there were some stragglers, but the turnout was impressive. “Practice is almost like therapy,” Ellen Peffley, president of the board of directors and alto singer for the Lubbock Chorale, said. “It just gives me a delightful feeling.” Because the chorale is made up of both community members and Texas Tech students, there is a challenge in picking practice times in which all members can be in attendance. So for rehearsal time, it relies heavily on its tradition and precedence of Tuesday night practices. It has faith in the hope that people will turn up to the practice times, John Hollins, associate professor and associate
Michael Molina, vice chancellor of facilities, planning and construction, presented a name for the new indoor football training facility at Texas Tech at the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents meeting. The board also approved the name for the nutrition center within the facility. The nutrition center will be named the PlainsCapital Bank Nutrition Center, according to the presentation. At the meeting, the board also accepted a gift-in-kind for the Tech Equestrian Center. According to the presentation, Curtis and Sue Griffith donated 2.016 acres, an estimated value of $89,000, to the university. Additionally, the board approved an expansion and budget increase to the renovations of the Petroleum Engineering building. According to the presentation, the renovation will create industrial labs, a new computer lab, conference room, new ceiling and lighting in some office space and other updates and replacements.
1. director of choral studies and artistic director of the Lubbock Chorale, said. The group does have an attendance policy that can be worked around depending on circumstances. For any one concert, there are a certain number of rehearsals a singer is allowed to miss. For all practices, Hollins said, there is always a positive environment in which there is mutual respect between singers and the director. “Sometimes we do have fun with it. I will exaggerate a certain undesired sound,” he said. “Always exaggerate and I make it clear that I’m exaggerating. And then offer a counter to that, a choice A and B. ‘What shall we choose, what sounds better to you?’”

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Tech’s winning streak snapped by No. 2 Kansas By DIEGO GAYTAN Staff Writer
The longest Big 12 streak for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team came to an end Saturday morning in Allen Fieldhouse after suffering a 67-58 loss to the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks. Missed opportunities followed the Red Raiders against Kansas at the start of the game. Despite grabbing seven offensive rebounds in the first half, Tech only converted three points from its secondchance possessions.
Passing the 10-minute mark of the first half, the Kansas offensive attack did not let up and opened a 10-point lead at the 5:49 mark with Tech behind 26-16. Sophomore guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk brought the Jayhawks to their largest lead of the game after letting up a 3-pointer for a 29-18 Kansas advantage. Senior guard Toddrick Gotcher helped Tech to overcome its first half stumbles with his outside shooting as he went 4 for 5 from the 3-point line. Two consecutive 3-pointers from
Gotcher brought the Red Raiders to within five until Mykhailiuk brought down a right corner 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Jayhawks to halftime up 37-29. The Kansas defense closed down the mid-range shot for the Red Raiders, as Tech shot for a combined 32.3 percent from the field. On the other side of the court, the Jayhawks shot for 44.4 percent from the court. Starting the second half, Kansas came out firing and took a 16-point lead after junior guard Frank Mason dropped a 3-pointer with 11:26
left in the game. Heading into the final 10 minutes, Tech attempted a comeback by going on 8-0 run to cut a 20-point deficit. A trip to the free-throw line near the eight-minute mark gave junior forward Aaron Ross his first points of the game and trimmed the Kansas lead to 10 points. Another pair of free throws from Ross brought the deficit to eight points. Kansas, however, scored five straight points and placed Tech behind 63-52 with less than three minutes left. From there, the Jayhawks drained the game clock and recorded their 39th
straight win at home. The loss brought Tech’s overall record to 18-10 and Big 12 record to 8-8. Kansas’ victory gave the Jayhawks a share of their 12th straight Big 12 conference title. Gotcher scored a game-high 20 points and Tech combined for 31.2 percent shooting. Mykhailiuk scored 17 points for the Jayhawks. Tech plays its second-to-last game of the regular season against the No. 14 West Virginia Mountaineers at 6 p.m. Wednesday in WVU Coliseum. @DGaytanDT
