Ending Strong Seniors propel Tech to regular season victory, No. 2 seed By CONNELLY BOCK Staff Writer

T

he No. 12 Texas Tech men’s basketball team defeated Texas Christian University, 79-75, on Saturday, March 4, at the United Supermarkets Arena. It was the final regular season home game for the Red Raiders and Senior Night, as Tech honored the five graduating seniors: guard Keenan Evans, forward Tommy Hamilton IV, guard Justin Gray, guard Niem Stevenson and forward Zach Smith. “These five seniors are special guys to me. I respect them all as people; I really enjoyed coaching them. I’m looking forward to keeping this ride going for as long as we possibly can,” Tech coach Chris Beard said. “I just want to coach these guys for as long as I can. I’m proud of each of them and everything they’ve done to establish our program.” The senior class has been a part of program history, including an NCAA Tournament bid in 2016, the first for the program since 2007, and a historic senior season including 22 wins, tied for the most in program history and a No. 6 ranking, the highest in program history. Evans will graduate as one of the most decorated players to wear the red

and black. He’s one of seven players in program history to garner 1,400 career points, 300 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 100 career steals, according to Tech Athletics. Evans is a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award. He is also the first Red Raider to receive an All-Big 12 firstteam selection since Jarrius Jackson in 2007. Evans reflected on his time at Tech after the game against TCU and was thankful for the opportunities coaches and fans provided him. “I just want to say thank you to (former head coach Tubby Smith), for bringing me and these guys to this school, it’s a great program. I want to thank coach Beard and his staff for giving me the opportunity to stay,” Evans said. “I also want to thank my family for supporting me through everything. Coach Smith leaving, coach Beard coming in. Also, I just want to thank Raider Nation for being behind us, no matter how bad the past seasons were and us losing four in a row. I just want to say thank you to everybody for giving us the opportunity and supporting us.”

Texas Tech was recently ranked 250 on safest campuses list of 4,000 university and college campuses by the National Council for Home

Safety and Security. Chris Cook, managing director of the Office of Communications & Marketing, is involved with campus safety by promoting new programs. “We’ve produced some videos on behalf of different companies,

some on safety, like the blue light phones,” Cook said. “Some have cameras on top, it was a safety project that began about a year and a half ago.”
