Tech professors say immigration issue complex By REECE NATIONS

mmigration was one of the most polarizing topics of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. On several occasions, President Donald Trump has stated that a border wall separating the U.S. from Mexico will help alleviate the nation's illegal immigration problem. Nadia Flores-Yeffal, an assistant professor in the department of sociology, said she has doubts about the effectiveness of implementing a border wall at such a high cost to taxpayers. It is estimated that Trump's border wall will cost up to $15 billon, and possibly as much as $25 billion, according to a report from Bernstein Research. "When you compare the costs of a multi-billion-dollar project like a border wall, it really makes very little economic sense," Flores-Yeffal said. "There is a lot of value in cheap immigrant labor brought to our country. Especially when you consider that immigration from Mexico is net zero right now, it's clear that building a wall on our southern border is pointless." The estimated cost of the concrete alone required to build the wall is around $700 million, according to Business Insider. Flores-Yeffal said the government would be better off by strengthening international relations with the nation’s neighbors to the south. People immigrating to the U.S. face the stigma of being foreigners once they arrive, Flores-Yeffal said. Immigrants have been used as political issues scapegoats

for decades, causing a negative perception of them and adding strain to the relationship between American-born citizens and undocumented workers. "Unauthorized workers still pay for social security, income taxes and property taxes just like any other citizen," she said. "Illegal immigrants have paid over $100 billion into social security over the last decade or so." In the past, the southern border of the U.S. functioned as more of a "revolving door," allowing individuals to return to Mexico after staying for a period of time, Flores-Yeffal said. However, with immigration laws becoming increasingly stringent over time, unauthorized workers realized they could not leave the U.S. and return later. “By increasing our regulation and monitoring of the border, we've actually trapped many people here who came looking for work years ago,” she said. “It’s become an inherently counterintuitive process.” Undocumented citizens in Texas are allowed to pursue an education because of the DREAM Act, Miguel Levario, associate professor in the department of history, said. In June 2001, Texas Legislature signed in to law HB1403, also known as the DREAM Act, which allowed certain individuals to qualify as residents of Texas for purposes of higher education and paying tuition, according to Texas Legislature Online.

It’s our seniors’ last chance, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond.” After their play in the Big 12 Conference, junior guard Keenan Evans and junior forward Zach Smith both earned All-Big 12 Honors, according to Tech Athletics. Evans was selected to the All-Big 12 Third team, while Smith was named All-Big 12 Honorable mention.
