he campus Ministry USA, a confrontational evangelical group that goes to college campuses around the country, started its annual stop on Texas Tech’s campus on Monday. Brother Jed Smock, president of the group; Sister Cindy, his wife; and Brother Mikhail Savunko, interacted with students, faculty and staff while at the Free Speech Area. This is Savunko’s first time at Tech. Savunko said he met Smock four years ago while he was speaking at the University of Oregon. “I came out and heard him speak,” Savunko said. “It changed my life. What he told the students was really amazing. I do see this working. I see people change all the time, people come to Christ.”

Emmitt Smith announced as banquet speaker Former Dallas Cowboys running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith will be this year’s keynote speaker for Mentor Tech’s 15th Annual Celebration Banquet at 7 p.m. April 13 in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Banquet Hall. During the banquet, parents, alumni and community members can commemorate the successes of Mentor Tech participants, according to a Texas Tech news release. The program, formally known as The Lauro Cavazos & Ophelia Powell-Malone Mentoring Program, has assisted more than 3,200 students since 2002. “As is our custom each year, it is our goal to select an accomplished individual to serve as our banquet speaker,” Cory Powell, program director for Mentor Tech said in the reSMITH lease. “And we are excited to have Emmitt Smith as our speaker this year.” Each ticket costs $100, according to the release. Attendees can also purchase a VIP ticket for $150, a table of eight for $1,000 or a VIP table for $1,500. After a Hall of Fame career with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals that lasted 15 seasons, Smith retired from the NFL in 2005, according to the release. In retirement, Smith has pursued enterprises in real estate and other industries. Additionally, Smith has ventured in philanthropy and , serving underserved youth in Dallas and across the nation, according to the release. Smith is also an author, writing his latest book, “Game On,” about his achievements in football and life. “Over the course of the past 14 years, our banquet attendees have heard from renowned educators, accomplished actors and actresses and successful industry leaders,” Powell said in the release. “This year is no exception. Emmitt Smith is not only a NFL legend, but also a successful businessman and entrepreneur.”

Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Texas Tech Climate Science Center and a professor in the Department of Political Science, was recently named one of the top 50 World’s Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine. Fortune's list honors noteworthy individuals who are highly influential and respected in their fields. The list also includes many famous world leaders, such as Pope Francis, Jeff Bezos, Angela Merkel, Elon Musk and HAYHOE U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, according to the release. “I am honored to be named one of Fortune’s World’s Greatest Leaders,” Hayhoe said, “and to be included with so many amazing people — some wellknown, others highlighted for the first time in this list — who are having such a tremendous impact on our world.” Hayhoe is also a producer for the KTTZ-TV program “Global Weirding,” an online series that focuses on exploring the science, religion, culture and psychology where political arguments and climate change intersect, according to the release. Ten episodes of the series were produced for season one, and the second season will begin in September. “My work may defy some stereotypes about the politics of science and religion,” Hayhoe said in the release. “By defying stereotypes, my hope is that this creates the opportunity for all of us to consider what we truly value and to align our attitudes and decisions with the values that define us.” @ReeceNationsDT

The No. 3 Texas Tech baseball team will return home to take on Texas Southern University for a two-game midweek series. The first pitch of the set is slated for 6:30 p.m. today at Dan Law Field. The Red Raiders had a strong outing last week going 5-0 after winning all of their scheduled contests, according to Tech Athletics. Tech first defeated the University of Nevada Las Vegas in its midweek series at home on March 21, 5-2. Tech closed out its perfect record for the week on the road in Wichita, Kansas. In their first contest of the weekend series, the Red Raiders took on Wichita State and defeated the Shockers, 10-5, on Friday. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Davis Martin improved to 4-1 on the season after he pitched for a total of six
innings and struck out five batters, according to Tech Athletics. The next two wins were close contests, with Tech beating Wichita State on Saturday, 4-1, and again on Sunday, 3-1, according to Tech Athletics. The Red Raiders have an overall record of 22-4 on the season and are 11-1 at home, according to Tech Athletics. The Red Raiders are on an eight-game winning streak after sweeping the Shockers. Texas Southern went 2-2 last week, according to Texas Southern Athletics. The Tigers first played Houston for a midweek game and fell to the Cougars, 16-3.
