Jed’s Back Brother Jed, ministry visit Tech By MATTHEW SETZEKORN Staff Writer
B
rother Jed Smock and other members of his religious organization, Campus Ministry USA, have returned to Texas Tech’s campus once again. The group plans to be on campus and preach to students in the Free Speech Area for the remainder of the week. Jed Smock was joined by his wife, Sister Cindy Smock, and two other members of their organization on Wednesday, March 28, to inform Tech students of their message and what makes them sinners. At one point, Smock stood in the middle of a large crowd of Tech students detailing his college career and telling the crowd of his past sins. He discussed his life in a fraternity, what college was like for him in the 1960s and the type of women he was attracted to, warning the fraternity members in the crowd to steer clear of certain temptations. When asked by a student in the crowd why he was “glorifying” his past sin, Smock responded by saying he was simply warning the crowd of what not to do. Brother Jed and his organization often make students upset, causing arguments, mocking from both sides and shouting matches. Shelby Oubre, a senior English major from Garland, said it is all about the delivery of their message that makes things so heated.

At the beginning of the 20172018 season, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll, but the Red Raiders exceeded those expectations with one of the best seasons in recent history for the program. The reason for the low preseason rankings was obvious, as last season the Red Raiders started with a 11-1 record in non-conference play, but struggled heavily in Big 12 play, finishing with an 18-14 overall record and a 6-12 record in conference play. “Even though last year’s team didn’t win as many games as I would have liked, there’s still just a great positive vibe around our program,” Tech coach Chris Beard said, prior to the season opener against South Alabama. “We respect the past and tradition of Tech basketball, but we also have the vision to do things that have never been done here before.” A major factor in the Red Raiders struggles during the 2016-2017 season was a lack of depth. Heading into the 2017-2018 season, Tech added senior Tommy Hamilton IV, freshman guards Jarrett Culver and Zhaire Smith and other role players. The freshman duo of Culver and Smith immediately became impact players for Tech and finished second and third in scoring this season respectively. “Tommy is in the rotation,

Senior guard Keenan Evans makes a three pointer during Texas Tech’s game against Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018, in the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders’ season concluded after a loss to Villanova in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. basically got seven or eight guys in the rotation that I would call starters,” Beard said, following the game against Maine. “They are just talented freshmen, I’d put Culver in that same category. They are guys that were recruited by a lot of schools around the country, and they chose Texas Tech for many reasons. One of those knowing they could play here early in their career, as we built the program.” Despite their low standings in the preseason poll, the Red Raiders showed dominance early, racking up three conference wins, including Tech’s first win in Allen Fieldhouse against the Kansas
Jayhawks. Despite a stretch of four games that included three losses following an injury to senior Zach Smith, the Red Raiders rebounded with a seven-game winning streak to vault into first place in the conference standings midway through February. The Red Raiders’ standings at the top of the conference would not last long, as senior Keenan Evans would break his toe against Baylor, and the loss of the top scorer on Tech sent the team tumbling on a four game skid, with the Red Raiders recovering to win the season finale against Texas Christian University.
