Texas universities differ on campus carry reports

A

cross the state, higher education institutions are releasing their campus carry policies. Senate Bill 11, otherwise known as Campus Carry, will go into effect on Aug. 1. The legislation allows presidents of universities to set reasonable rules to fit their campuses. With that, campuses across the state have set up Campus Carry Task Forces to set these guidelines with input around campus to send to presidents for approval. The presidents then send these recommendations to the system of their universities. On Tuesday, Texas Tech released its final recommendations from the Campus Carry Task Force. Other schools that have released theirs include the University of Texas, the University of North Texas and Texas State University. UT includes specific rules for concealed handgun licence holders not included in the Tech report. For example, a gun must be in a holster that covers the trigger and entire trigger guard area, according to the report on its website. It also specifies a

semiautomatic handgun cannot be carried with a chambered round of ammunition. Similar to Tech, UT’s report prohibits guns at places with minors, sporting events, anywhere with minors, certain labs and places where patients are being treated. SEE UNIVERSITY, PG. 5

Any University Interscholastic League event, any Board of Regents meeting, student judicial service, government meeting or polling location cannot allow handguns. Open carry is still not allowed on campuses. Tech will prohibit guns at athletic events, residence halls where students share a room, the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center, Kent Hance Chapel, anywhere with counseling services, anywhere with minors and other areas on campus. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center will not allow CHL holders to carry in any designated medical service areas, according to the report. It will also not allow carry in designated research laboratories. SEE SYSTEM, PG. 8
