Stepping Up to the Plate Freshman class pushes Red Raiders By DIEGO GAYTAN Staff Writer
Before the season began for the Texas Tech softball team, coach Adrian Gregory expected her freshman class to bolster the Red Raider defense and offensive attack. Going through the nonconference portion of the schedule, three freshmen worked their way into earning time on the field, with Kiani Ramsey at left field, Jessica Hartwell playing at third and Karli Hamilton going in as a designated player. In Tech’s opening series in the Big 12 against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, the
freshmen took charge when the Red Raiders needed a lift. To earn Tech’s first conference win, Hartwell blasted a three-run homer past the right field wall with two outs on board against the Red Raiders. Two games later, Ramsey represented the freshman class by knocking down a walkoff hit of her own. With players at first and second, Ramsey took a swing at a pitch down the middle to double for the defining run scored by Hamilton, who reached on a single at the bottom of the eighth. Ramsey’s walkoff double capped off a seven-run rally. As the team has progressed
through the season, Gregory said the freshmen have taken advantage of the opportunities they have received. “I’ve talked about this all year, I think our freshman class is clearly solid,” Gregory said. “I just really enjoy this class, they’re wired the right way and they’ll continue to help us as we move forward.” Combining the offensive numbers of Tech’s three regular freshmen, Ramsey, Hartwell and Hamilton attribute a little more than a quarter of Tech’s runs with 45 of 185, 78 of Tech’s 274 hits and 11 of the 40 Red Raider home runs.

Tapingo app makes on-campus food ordering mobile By RYAN ORTEGON Staff Writer
The Texas Tech campus has adopted a new app that allows students to skip the lines and get their on-campus food faster than ever. Udi Oster and Daniel Almog saw a need for a better-structured and faster way for students on college campuses to get their food, so they launched the Tapingo app in 2012.
“In addition to the usual meal-time rush, classes tend to start and end at the same time, which results in long lines at food venues between classes,” Leanne Reis, a public relations manager for the Tapingo app, said. “Using Tapingo, students, faculty and staff have an easy and convenient way to avoid waiting in line so they can do the things that really matter, like spending time with friends or making it to class on time.”
Students who download the app can load their Raider Card, credit or debit card information into the app, and then they choose their food from the variety of dining halls and food sources available on campus. The app sends the user a notification when his or her food is ready, and there will be a specific station located at that eatery to pick up the order.
