Defensive juggernauts clash in National Championship

After a decisive win over Michigan State, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team will face the Virginia Cavaliers at 8:20 p.m. central on Monday, April 8, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as two of the top defenses in the league clash for the right to win their first championship.

Both teams are making their first ever appearances in the National Championship, with Tech advancing past the Elite Eight for the first time in program history this season. Prior to this season, the Cavaliers made the Final Four twice in a four-year span back in the early 80s but were unable to advance to the championship round, according to 1

sports-reference.com.

Virginia was an early favorite entering this season, having suffered a stunning upset in last year’s First Round. Many expected head coach Tony Bennett to make noise this season, as the team came in fifth in the AP Top 25 preseason poll.

In regular season play, the Cavaliers lost just two games, falling both times in ACC Conference play against the Duke Blue Devils. In ACC Championship play, Virginia fell to Florida State, entering the NCAA Tournament with just three losses to weigh against the team’s 29 wins.

As the first place team in the top-heavy ACC, Virginia earned a 1-seed in the south bracket of the NCAA Tournament and faced little trouble advancing to the Final Four

for the first time since 1984.

Double digit victories over Gardner-Webb and Oklahoma placed the Cavaliers in the Sweet 16, followed by a pair of close wins over Oregon and Purdue, setting Virginia on a collision course with Auburn in the Final Four, one of the hottest teams in the country.

In the bout with Auburn, the Tigers appeared to have full control of the game, but a foul call in the final second put Cavalier guard Kyle Guy at the line to shoot three free throws, and Guy delivered, sinking all three to take a onepoint advantage over Auburn with .6 seconds to play. The prayer shot from the Tigers fell short, and the Cavaliers were headed to the first National Championship appearance in program history.

For Virginia, this has been a process a decade in the making. Cavalier coach Bennett, hired back in 2009, spent his first two seasons on the outside looking in, before making the NCAA Tournament seven times over the next eight seasons. Prior to Bennett’s hire, Virginia had made the NCAA Tournament just twice dating back to 1998, according to sportsreference.com.

Much akin to Tech’s own Chris Beard, Bennett employs a defensive-minded attack. Unlike Beard, the Cavaliers place a second focus on slow, methodical offensive possessions, which limits the amount of opportunities opponents see in a game. Because of this, Virginia fields a league best 55.5 points allowed per game,

slightly better than Tech’s 58.8 points allowed per game, which ranks third best out of 353 teams, according to sports-reference.com.

While the Cavaliers do not score many points offensively due to their strategy of using the majority of the shot clock before shooting, the team has an efficient offense. At just 71.1 points per game scored, the Cavaliers’ offense ranks 219 out of 353 teams but has an offensive rating of 116.2, fourth best in the country, according to sports-reference.com.

Virginia’s top playmaker is Guy, a knockdown shooter who averaged 15.2 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game and 2.1 assists per game in his junior year. Guy is dangerous from the perimeter, shooting .425 from

three this year while taking 7.4 attempts per game. From the charity stripe, Guy is the Cavaliers’ best shooter, making .825 of his attempts from the free throw line, according to sports-reference.com.

Outside of Guy, the Cavaliers’ roster is stacked when it comes to the team’s top four options. In his redshirt sophomore season, guard De’Andre Hunter has become a menace on the court, averaging 14.9 points per game alongside 5.0 rebounds per game. At 6-foot-7 and playing the shooting guard position, Hunter projects to be a top 10 pick in this year’s NBA Draft, should he declare. Hunter’s combination of size and speed makes him a threat and difficult to defend.

CONTINUED FROM PG. 2 Another projected first rounder on Virginia’s roster is junior point guard Ty Jerome, a 6-foot-5 passer with the ability to still score and rebound at will. Averaging 13.5 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game, Jerome’s true ability is running the offense, as the point guard averages 5.2 assists per game while setting up Guy and Hunter, forming a formidable triple guard attack.

Over the last four games of the NCAA Tournament, the Cavaliers have started a fourth guard alongside their three primary guards, with freshman guard Kihei Clark filling that fourth spot for Virginia. At just 5-foot9, Clark lacks the size to bully inside, averaging just 4.9 points per game, 2.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

With such a front loaded guard rotation with the size to guard nearly any front court in the country, the Cavaliers complete their starting lineup with a dominant big man inside to defend the rim.

Redshirt junior forward Mamadi Diakite has been a force for Virginia in the tournament, scoring 54 points over the team’s five tournament games. While Diakite averages just 7.4 points, his 4.4 rebounds per game and 1.6 blocks per game make him an excellent rim protector, with Diakite recording the second highest defensive rating in the ACC this season, according to sports-reference.com.

or out. The team’s backcourt holds opponents to the fifth worst shooting percentage and fourth worst three-point percentage in the league.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers answer with some phenomenal shooting of their own, with the eighth best shooting percentage from three at .393, according to sports-reference.com.

With such long possessions offensively, the Cavaliers place an emphasis on moving the ball around yet avoid turning it over, with the 34th most assists in the league and eighth least turnovers. On defense, Virginia has allowed the sixth least assists, while hauling in the 34th most rebounds.

“When we take care of the ball and we play at the right pace and tempo, it allows us to do the things we want to do on defense,” Tech coach Chris Beard said, according to the NCAA. “I think Virginia is very, very similar. I think their offense is explosive, but it works together with defense.”

For Tech, the key to the game will be to attack Virginia’s offense to keep the game low-scoring and in reach.

Tech will need its guard rotation of sophomore guard Jarrett Culver, sophomore guard Davide Moretti and transfer guard Matt Mooney to protect the ball while also scoring from outside.

On the interior, big men senior center Norense Odiase and transfer forward Tariq Owens will have their hands full defending the paint-dominant Hunter and Diakite, but pulling in rebounds will limit the Cavaliers’ offense and give Tech more opportunities to score. @AustinWattsDT

Jarrett Culver flashed across the screen, arms spread in triumph after a Final Four victory against MSU that sends the Red Raiders to their first national title game. The young man from the same city they live, from the high school the young girl aspires to go to, from the same college many in the room are proud to be called alumni of.

In a city that lives, breathes and loves Tech, a college campus centered at its heart, a night filled with high school proms, Greek socials — even a law school prom — becomes a night of well-dressed watch parties for the Red Raiders men’s basketball team.

from the local dress store, in suits that used to be their fathers’ before and now fits them just the same, young women and men ignored slow dances and punch to jump, cheer and high five as Tariq Owens sprinted out from the locker room after injury with seven minutes left in the game.

An hour after the game, a girl riding a stick wooden horse waiting at the end of a long line to take a tour of the bell tower stepped out of line to sing and join a crowd gathered around a mustang blasting the song “Old Town Road.”

Through the night, Saddle Tramps pulled a thick chain in a small room in the Bell Tower, forcing the clappers strike against their respec-

tive bells, producing energy in it’s vibrations that becomes the sweet sound that echoed across campus Saturday night.

In a city that lives, breathes and loves Tech, a college campus centered at its heart, a night filled with high school proms, Greek socials — even a law school prom — becomes a night of well-dressed watch parties for the Red Raiders men’s basketball team.

Even later in the night on Broadway, the smallest representation of Tech fans does what every minority of fans seem to do after every major victory (or loss) of a sports team. A flipped car,

fights — an absolutely ridiculous sight of someone riding a flaming Lime scooter — and an eventual line of police sent to quell a crowd.

Would you be surprised to know the disappointing incidents that occurred celebrating a win in Lubbock, nearly mirrored the disappointing incidents that occurred in East Lansing, Michigan, for Spartan fans rioting after their loss to us?

A burning couch on Broadway burns just as bright as one does on Gunson Street. These are the disappointing things people do — the things that make for great photos and attempt to cast a shadow over the joy and excitement of what really makes a trip to the National Championship for Tech mean so much.

Fortunately for us, a burning couch or scooter just doesn’t burn as bright as the joy of most Red Raider fans, a father and daughter,

their family and friends in their home, the young men and women in formal wear at proms watching the red and black light up the court. The girl riding the stick wooden horse outside the bell tower, the person blasting “Old Town Road” and the Saddle Tramps giving tours and ringing Victory Bells.

The incidents are a match struck and put out quickly compared to the fire that burns from the weight of pure joy and excitement from a city, a college, its passionate Red Raider students and alumni, old fans and new picked up across the nation for our team.

But along with the team, all Red Raiders are going to the NCAA National Championship. Even the absurd fan who rode a flaming scooter, who we’ll all just have to pray for next Sunday at church.

Providing others with power in social resources is multiplicative, not finite

M

ost everyone who is at least somewhat in tune with current day conversations about social justice, equity and inclusion understand these issues are wholly connected to the dynamics of power and resources, both social and material.

Power has been abused and utilized to deprive many groups of basic rights and opportunities, and a system has developed to protect its allocation to certain groups.

The idea of a scarcity of power becomes both ingrained in social structures and in general rhetoric.

Common conceptions of the way power is distributed revolves around a pielike mentality; there is only a finite amount of power, and therefore, should any group receive more power, the relative ratio of power is changed. In other words, one group loses out so another can benefit.

into our every day lives is in the discussion surrounding affirmative action and college universities.

In a Buzzfeed article regarding the recent scandal of college admissions, an anonymous former college admissions counselor describes the concerns of parents who believed their students’ spots would be taken away because of their whiteness or affluence.

Inherent to the way these parents thought about college admissions, it became a discussion of how their student was being cheated out of a spot — frequently framed as already allocated to their student — so that a student with a more “diverse background” can fill out a diversity quota that was incorrectly associated with affirmative action.

Parents were furious because they believed something inherently promised to their children was being systemically removed, though no such promise was ever made.

This mentality of finite power is one of the most destructive forces in our modern-day discussions about the structure of society. As people believe they are losing a part of their world when they see someone else benefit, they become defensive. Because this false notion promises a loss, those who have systemically been afforded more power develop a combative attitude toward those who simply ask for the basic rights any citizen should have.

The reality of power is much simpler and uplifting than the view most of us have subscribed to. Instead of believing power can only be infinitely divided from a finite allotment, we should understand power as a multiplicative tool for good.

A simple scenario where

one can see this view of power play out is the act of sharing a stage for voices normally gone overlooked to be heard.

Assume you have been invited to give a speech at a very important rally. You look at the list of others who have been asked to speak, and they all share similar backgrounds and stories with you.

Then, someone who is touched by this same issue but shares very little background or identity with you tells you their story. You are moved by their experiences, seeing how the issue you share with this person also affects them on a deeper level. In their words, you hear the struggle of an entire community who has not been able to voice their suffering.

In that moment, you choose to use your stage to introduce this person and empower them to share their story.

In that moment, you have chosen to make your

power multiply, to reach beyond your world and into someone else’s.

When we offer access to the power many of us hold — as those who are white, affluent, cisgender, male, abled and so on — we do not surrender anything.

There is no loss. When we offer help to others who have been pushed down, we are simply making room for them to be lifted up onto the infinite field of possibility and progress before us.

The implication of this new concept of power is freeing. Those who hold power no longer have to believe they are being taken away from, but rather they can uplift those around them who have not been offered the same opportunities.

Saddle Tramps ring Victory Bells for Final Four win

As the seconds ticked down during Saturday’s night game, the Saddle Tramps waited with hands on the victory bell chains to hear the final score. Then, at approximately 10:08 p.m., the sound of the victory bells pierced the room as the Saddle Tramps celebrated Texas Tech’s first Final Four win.

Jake Van-Horn, a sophomore public relations major from Weatherford, was the first Saddle Tramp to ring the victory bells.

“I honestly have no words,” he said. “I get to cherish this for the rest to of my life. Tech’s going to the national championship. I got to ring the first Bell for that, that’s so cool.”

The Saddle Tramps usually ring the bells for 30 minutes after every victory. Saturday night’s win, however, called for a full two hours of ringing until midnight, VanHorn said. All 50 members of the Saddle Tramps got to take a turn.

The Texas Tech Police Department was gracious enough to let the tramps ring until midnight, he said. They originally wanted to ring the bells even longer, asking Tech PD for a full 24 hours.

“We wanted to ring for that long because one, we did it in 1936, first time that’s ever been done, then

we rang it for 24 in 1993 when the women won,” he said. “We wanted it to be the exact same experience, we understand why it’s not, but you know the thought process was still there.”

The Saddle Tramps were not the only people to celebrate in the Bell Tower on Saturday night, as the clock tower was opened to give tours to students and fans.

The tours are a new concept, Van-Horn said. The Saddle Tramps first started running tours at the Elite Eight game.

“We decided you know what, the public needs to see this, the public needs to be part of all of this,” he said. “It’s one of the coolest feelings you know of, ‘Hey, the public now gets to be a part of traditions and stuff.’”

Bryan Joiner, a senior geology major from Dallas, was one of the first students to visit the clock tower during the tours. It was his first time being in the tower, he

said.

Being able to see the inside of the bell tower on such a historic night was amazing, Joiner said.

“I mean you can just see (the history) all over the walls,” he said. “It’s just history, everywhere. It’s incredible to be a part of it.”

Jamie Simmons, a social work/psychology double major from Willis, attended the tour with Joiner.

Simmons said the night’s victory was incredible. Many people underestimate Tech and on Saturday night, those people got to see who Tech really is, something the bell tower represents.

“Whenever we win a game you hear the bell tower, and it’s something we take pride in, when we win, to hear the victory bell ring,” Simmons said. “You don’t get to come up here ever. It’s a very rare occasion to celebrate such a monumental deal that Texas Tech has made it so far.”

Campbell Robinson, a sophomore sports management major from Abilene and member of the Saddle Tramps, said seeing how fired up the community of Red Raiders were in the bell tower was an “absolute blast.”

“Seeing the pride and the community that Red Raiders have, it’s awe-inspiring,” he said. “It’s even a bigger crowd than we had after our Elite Eight win against Gonzaga just to get to this

Texas Tech preaches calm to fans MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Texas Tech guard Matt Mooney is encouraging all those fans back in Lubbock to take whatever happens in the national title game against Virginia on Monday night in stride.

That’s after riots ensued after a semifinal win over Michigan State.

“Don’t burn down Lubbock before we get back,” Mooney said, suppressing a smile before heading out for a final practice. “I know it was crazy out there. Just be safe.”

The city of Lubbock said in a statement that hundreds of fans gathered near campus and “engaged in extremely dangerous, and disappointing, behavior that included vandalizing property.”

Tech coach Chris Beard wasn’t particularly pleased with it, either, saying that “I just hate the actions of a few have put Lubbock in that life.”

Either Texas Tech was indulging in some gamesmanship the day before the national championship game against Virginia or the Red Raiders have some real concerns about the availability of a key player.

Coach Chris Beard declined to give an update on the status of forward Tariq Owens, who rolled an ankle during the victory against Michigan State in the Final Four. Owens left the game in the second half, but did return to play some more.

Celebrating in the bell tower is also incredible because of its history, Robinson said.

“Being in the bell tower is just an example of history as it is, but being here just making history and seeing this massive crowd of people, there’s not enough words to describe how awesome it is,” he said. “It’s indescribable. It it really is.”

Van-Horn expects to be back in the bell tower on Monday, he said, once again pulling the chain to signal Tech’s victory, this time at the National Championship.

“This team, unlike any other Tech team in history for basketball, this team is like a brotherhood, much like the Saddle Tramps are,” he

said. “There’s nothing this team can’t do. This team is a championship caliber team.”

The Saddle Tramps will be ringing the bells on Monday until midnight if Tech wins,

he said. Under advisement from the Tech and Lubbock Police Departments, no tours of the bell tower will be given on Monday for safety reasons.

Celebrations reach new levels following Final Four win

In the wake of the Texas Tech men’s basketball team’s Saturday night win at the Final Four, celebrations near campus reached new heights.

The bulk of the activity occurred around the Tech campus on Broadway and University, where students gathered in large crowds.

The energy on Broadway was indescribable, Aria Spence, a senior advertising major from Dallas, said.

It was like all the people there were a big family partying together.

“It’s like you have to be here to witness it. It’s freaking awesome. One of my friends said it’s like 6th Street, but like all Tech fans, and so that’s pretty much how I would describe it,” she said. “It’s just crazy and pretty much everyone’s yelling ‘Wreck ‘Em’ everywhere you go.”

Cooper Pulliam, a senior nursing major from Wichita Falls, said he had never seen anything as crazy in Lubbock in his years at Tech. In that moment, he said he saw people walking away with a street sign.

“It’s honestly amazing. It’s just a sight to see,” he said.

“I’m just so excited, this is unbelievable. If we win Monday, Lubbock is definitely going to have a few burned buildings I would say.”

As the night went on, the celebrations grew more intense, Stephen Akwaowo, a sophomore finance major from Murphy, said.

“Well when I got there, initially they tried to knock down a light post, but then that didn’t happen, so they flipped a car, and afterwards, they found a sofa and they lit that on fire,” he said.

People were kicking the flaming couch back and forth with people jumping over it, Caedmon Seekins, a freshman information technology major from Washington, said.

“A man on a Lime (scooter) just did circles around the couch on fire and then threw the Lime in the fire,” he said.

Multiple Lime scooters were thrown into the fire, Akwaowo said.

At points in the night, it seemed as if the fire from the couch was in danger of spreading, Stephanie Bui, a senior petroleum engineering major from Katy, said.

I was expecting them to get wild but not this wild.

JOE ROGAN JUNIOR “So like there’s a huge fire five feet away from me right now, and like 500 people on Broadway, and they’re burning a couch, and I’m pretty sure a car is about to catch on fire,” she said. “I’m not kidding. Like all of Broadway is about to catch on fire right now.”

The crowd went on to flip more than one car, Joe Rogan, a junior marketing major from Austin, said.

“I was expecting them to get wild, but not this wild,” he said. “It’s kind of crazy to be honest.”

Later in the night, the Lubbock Police SWAT team showed up on the scene, Rogan said.

Noell Luna, a Lubbock resident, said she saw the cops step in to get the crowd under control.

“I’ve seen these guys get pushed by the cops, these cops threw these like gas things at everybody,” she said.

Roger Settler, a Tech alumnus who lives on Broadway, was present at the scene.

Settler said back when he was a student at Tech, he was chairman of the Vietnam Moratorium of the War. At one point, he was part of a protest in which 10,000 students were on the streets.

Saturday night were relatively restrained compared to his experiences in the 1960s, he said.

“I would urge the city and the police to show restraint in these things,” he said. “Show some restraint, they’re showing good restraint tonight, and I applaud that.”

This group of students had a similar energy to his peers protesting Vietnam, he said.

“You know the crowd dynamics aren’t that different,” he said. “It’s interesting they chose to burn scooters. Why, I don’t know, but in our time we had to work overtime to keep them from overturning cars, but I think they did earlier.”

Akwaowo thought the celebrations were relatively safe from a distance, he said, but people did get injured. He saw a girl laying on a bench with a police officer next to her from an injury sustained during the riot.

Property was also vandalized and even destroyed, he said.

“That car got messed up really bad,” Akwaowo said.

“They flipped that car, and the windows were like busted in. It’s pretty bad, I feel bad for that car owner.”

The owner of the vandalized car, Fidel Leon, currently has a GoFundMe page up to receive donations.

Akwaowo said he wished students celebrated a little more safely. These were representing Tech and should have acted more civilized, he said.

“Don’t light couches on fire and don’t flip cars because that’s not a good thing to do,” he said.

Although students at the riots were relatively safe and “just releasing pent up energy,” Settler said, he always advocates for nonviolence.

It is good to be fun and excited, he said, but violence is never a good thing.

LPD investigates Saturday crimes, prepares for Monday game

The Lubbock Police Department is working to solve multiple cases of property damage that took place on Broadway after the Texas Tech men’s basketball team’s win against Michigan State Saturday night.

According to a LPD news release, the department is working with the Lubbock Fire Marshal’s Office to get information on suspects to pursue charges.

At about 10 p.m., according to the news release, a crowd of about several thousand people gathered on Broadway near Tech campus. The LPD, who had resources in place in preparation for large celebrations in Lubbock, kept

the crowd contained in a one-block area.

During the crowd’s celebration, according to the news release, some people damaged property, including a flipped car and multiple scooters set on fire.

Officers present at the scene ordered the crowd to disperse and later utilized tear gas on the crowd.

After multiple incidents of some people being uncooperative and hitting police with bottles, LPD contained people to the blocked-off area and were able to have the roads cleared and reopened at around 1:45 a.m.

Virginia, Texas Tech get defensive to move to title game MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Slap the floor, bend those knees and get both hands up.

This national championship game is going to be a clinic on defense.

Virginia and Texas Tech are the last two teams alive in the NCAA Tournament, and they’re here because they barely let their opponents breathe with the ball.

Two of the three best defenses in the nation will meet for the title on Monday night, the first appearance in the final for each program.

So after surviving a low-scoring semifinal on Saturday, here come the Cavaliers and the Red Raiders for another clash of the paint packers and ball hawkers.

Virginia stunned Auburn 63-62 , when Kyle Guy sank three free throws with 0.6 seconds left after a late foul call. Then Texas Tech grinded past Michigan State 61-51 , buoyed by 22 points from Matt Mooney and bolstered by coach Chris Beard’s smothering defensive approach.

“I have a lot of respect for Virginia,” Beard said. “I watch them on TV all the time, and we study the things they do defensively.”

The Red Raiders are now Ph.D. level defenders, too.

No matter the number of shots made, the trophy will be lifted and the confetti will be dropped either way at U.S. Bank Stadium, where 72,711

fans packed the 3-year-old football facility for the semifinal games. The last time the national title was awarded in Minneapolis was in 2001, when Duke beat Arizona at the Metrodome.

The last big-time sporting event held in this building was the Super Bowl just 14 months ago when the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in the second-highest-scoring NFL title game in league history.

The chance of Virginia

and Texas Tech establishing a similar feat will be slim at best, considering the record for combined points in an NCAA championship game is 182, when Kentucky beat Duke 94-88 in 1978. The Cavaliers (55.4) and Red Raiders (59.0) entered the Final Four ranked first and third, respectively, in the country in average points allowed per game.

To no surprise, gamblers seized on the under.

The projected scoring total for this NCAA final opened at 121 and bettors quickly drove it down to 117½ within an hour. Virginia opened as a 2-point favorite, and early action tightened the spread to 1 over Texas Tech.

Mooney’s career game helps Tech advance to championship

When graduate student guard Matt Mooney had a career game against Michigan State in the Final Four, he helped his team advance to the National Championship. The guard from Wakonda, Illinois, stepped up when sophomore guard Jarrett Culver was off.

In the matchup, Mooney matched his career-high 22 points, put in four three-pointers and shot .500 from the field, according to Tech Athletics. In the second half, Mooney was three for five from behind the arc. The only other time the guard led the team was against Texas when he put up 22 points.

With Culver not having his normal night, Tech coach Chris Beard said Mooney had more of a chance to get open and

shoot the ball. Mooney’s talents helped the team, Beard said.

“He’s obviously very, very talented, but the thing that really impressed me tonight was just his courage, just to be able to make those big plays and want to be in those moments,” Beard said, according to the NCAA. “When Culver was — I’m not going to say struggling a little bit, I think when Michigan State was focused on Culver so much, Matt had the courage to step up and take those shots.”

After Culver scored just one point in the first half, Mooney evened things out.

Due to the first half being slow and low scoring, Mooney scored nine points. The second half picked up, and the grad student put up 13 points in the tail end of the game, according to Tech Athletics.

This season, Mooney is av-

eraging 11.3 points per game 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists, according to sports-reference. com. Last season when Mooney was at Air Force, the guard averaged 18.7 points per game.

Mooney does not get much spotlight because of Culver and sophomore guard Davide Moretti. In the 37 games the team played this year, Culver scored the most points in 28 games, Moretti scored the most points in six games, and Mooney scored the most points in three games, including against Michigan State, according to Tech Athletics.

The championship game on Monday, April 8, against 2-seed Virginia will be a challenge for Mooney and the rest of the team, but look for the grad student to continue his hot streak in his last collegiate game. @EleanorGuinanDT

Culver, Hunter bring NBA upside to Texas Tech-Virginia final Confidence overrides nerves for MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jarrett Culver knew Texas Tech desperately needed him to make a big leap after

a solid freshman year so he charged full-speed into an offseason determined to refine and expand every

element of his game.

De’Andre Hunter needed a little longer to do the same at Virginia, even by spending a year as a redshirt watching from the sidelines.

Yet here they are in Minneapolis, a pair of players who have blossomed into bonafide NBA prospects

for teams a win away from becoming a first-time national champion. Consider it proof — or maybe simply a needed reminder — that college players can still take a slightly longer path to becoming top-tier NBA prospects amid the college game’s starry-eyed infatuation with one-and-done talents.

Virginia’s Guy in big moment MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Virginia’s Kyle Guy felt the nerves tingling in his stomach as he stepped to the foul line for three of the most pressurecharged free throws in recent Final Four history.

He felt “terrified” with more than 70,000 people staring at his every movement — understandable for a player who has been open about his battles with anxiety.

He also felt confident.

And that, more than anything, is why Guy is thriving in this moment with the Cavaliers a win away from the program’s first national championship.

“Confidence can come to you from family, from past experiences, from wanting something, a goal, from your teammates,” Guy said Sunday. “I try to relish all of that. I get as much confidence as I can from everyone and try to squeeze every ounce of it I can.”

Guy hit all three of those

free throws with 0.6 seconds left to help Virginia beat Auburn 63-62 in Saturday’s stunning finish. He had also hit a huge corner 3-pointer only moments before, all of which dragged Cavs back from the brink of another crushing jolt of tournament heartbreak.

Now Virginia is set to play Texas Tech on Monday night.

And its leading scorer (15.2 points) is eager for another big moment that might have been almost too much for him to handle a year earlier.

It was then, in the weeks following top-seeded Virginia’s unprecedented first-round loss to 16-seed UMBC, that the 6-foot-2 junior from Indianapolis posted an open letter to himself on social networks. It was a confessional catharsis to process everything that happened, including death threats following an embarrassing loss that he said left him sitting in the shower to sob after the game.

Tech fans took ‘Burn the Boats’ literally

O

n S a t u r d a y, t h e Texas Tech men’s basketball team defeated Michigan State, 6151, to earn a spot in the National Championship game against Virginia.

Following the historic win, Tech students and fans flooded Broadway and began to chant, cheer and enjoy the victory. As time passed, the number of people on the street grew, and the Lubbock Police Department shut the street down.

The crowd then began to get rowdier, starting with people standing on the roofs and hoods of cars parked on the street. I assume this sparked an idea in someone’s head because moments after, fans flipped a car over and stood on the bottom of it.

A couch then surfed the crowd and was set on fire in the middle of Broadway.

People then proceeded to throw beer cans and Lime scooters into the growing bonfire.

As the fire grew, the police force attempted to control the craziness as a riot team moved in on the action.

The riot team threw what appeared to be tear gas after bottles were thrown at them.

Fans also were climbing on top of anything they could, including signs, trees and the roofs of stores — all in the name of celebrating a Final Four win.

The majority of the fans truly came out to celebrate Tech’s historic win with other Red Raiders, but the few rowdy fans have put Lubbock in the national spotlight. News outlets such as CNN, ABC 13, FOX News and Sports Illustrated posted videos of the chaos which has given the city a bad rep.

Along with news outlets, celebrities such as NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and rapper Lil Nas X also went to Twitter to speak about

the riot.

The riot occurred after a win to place the Red Raiders in the National Championship game, many are wondering what the city will be like if Tech brings home a championship title.

From what I’ve seen, the Lubbock Police Department did not make any arrests on Broadway, even though fans were throwing items at the riot squad and shot gunning beers in front of them for pictures.

The Lubbock Police sent out a statement on Twitter mentioning their goal was to disperse the crowd but have moved to a criminal investigation. Those who participated in criminal activity such as arson, vio-

lent behavior, destruction of property and others will face criminal charges. LPD and Texas Tech officials are trying to identify students involved in the acts.

I could only imagine the police will head into Monday more prepared for the chaos. I would assume the police, SWAT and fire department will be on the scene before the championship game starts to be proactive.

Tech fans took the saying ‘burn the boats’ literally.

Everyone can only pray a National Championship win will be handled more effectively, and the fans will respect the city in the national spotlight.

Aldridge’s double-double paces Spurs to win over Cavs CLEVELAND (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs, who are in a three-team scramble to determine playoff seeding in the Western Conference, extended Cleveland’s losing streak to nine games by beating the Cavaliers 112-90 on Sunday.

The Spurs recently clinched a postseason spot for a NBA record-tying 22nd year in a row, but they don’t yet know who they’ll play in the first round. San Antonio came into the day in eighth place, which would mean an early matchup with defending champion Golden State.

However, the Spurs can still move ahead of Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Clippers as they own tiebreakers with both teams.

DeMar DeRozan and Patty Mills added 14 points apiece for the balanced Spurs, who turned back

every Cleveland challenge in the second half. Mills made three 3-pointers in a two-minute span early in the fourth quarter to end any chances of the Cavs rallying.

Rookie Collin Sexton and Brandon Knight scored 16 each for Cleveland, and the Cavs celebrated the upcoming retirement of forward Channing Frye throughout the game.

Kevin Love returned after missing four games and played 13 minutes in the first half — a salute to Frye, his close friend.

San Antonio didn’t pull away from Cleveland until midway through the second quarter and the Spurs used a 9-0 run over the final 2:05 to open a 62-46 halftime lead.

With the popular Frye retiring after Tuesday’s game and 13 seasons, Cavs coach Larry Drew started the 35-year-old for the first time since Jan. 9.

What was it like being at Indiana during two of their championship runs and at Arkansas for theirs?

Indiana had already won several championships before 1976, but when you’re involved in a Big 10 university like that, the thrill of winning, having winning seasons and going to the NCAA Championship is very energizing for the whole community. Not just the university, but for the whole community surrounding it.

They really get caught up in it. It’s not like Lubbock.

Bloomington, Indiana, is only about 40,000 people if you take out the students.

It energizes the whole thing.

Not only for the energy of being in the Final Four, but also financially, because the community gets a lot of benefit from selling championship memorabilia and things like that that surround it.

It was really quite exciting. Leading up to it was just an anticipation that a lot of people don’t get to feel.

Would you say it was similar when you were at the University of Arkansas and they won?

A

That was another one of those kind of “Cinderella” stories. That was, as far as EGGLESTON I know, the only championship they ever won in 1984. Nolan Richardson, the coach, he had a very, very good team. Several people that were on that team, after they won the championship, they went professional.

He basically almost had to start over with a new team because a lot of his team left after that championship game. I still have the Sports Illustrated magazine when they showed the Arkansas team on the front cover of Sports Illustrated. I just immediately after that got a copy of it and kept a copy of it, so that I could remember my time there. I was an assistant professor at the time teaching.

It was one of those things that if you’ve never been to an NCAA Final Four or even the championship game, the anticipation and the energy is just outstanding.

Q

For any of those three, did you go to the Final Four or the championship game?

at Indiana when the Hoosiers won the championship.

He was there in 1987 when they won again, this time for his doctorate.

No, I never did. I never had that opportunity. I was actually stage managing an opera production the night that Indiana won in 1987. You could hear people, downtown Bloomington, cheering and hooting it up and everything when they won their championship game.

You could get it from the musical arts center which was like a mile and a half away. I couldn’t imagine even being downtown at that time because traffic much have been, and the sound and the energy and people just going crazy because they won the championship.

Q

For the championship at Arkansas, you mentioned how they were the ‘Cinderella’ story. Would you say that’s how Tech is this season, having lost so many players from last year?

A

Absolutely, absolutely. I think that the similarity is very close. Arkansas, their basketball team was good, but it was not stellar until that championship season. The way that I see Texas Tech is very similar to that.

You always have as good a team as you can possibly put together, but when you

start on a roll, it’s like you pick up steam and you pick up momentum, the more you win. The whole university here in Lubbock is just phenomenal. The support and everything that they’re giving to this team is just tremendous.

For the two championships you were at Indiana for, Bob Knight was the coach. With his ties back to Texas Tech and to Coach Beard, that adds another layer of similarity to your history with Final Four teams, wouldn’t you say?

A

When I heard that Bob Knight was moving to Texas Tech, I tried to contact the athletic department and tell them my story there, because I had already been through two IU wins and the Arkansas win. It’s like, if you hire you me, you might win. Nobody ever called me back and guess what. Bob never won.

I’m sure that Bob would disagree with that, but it’s nice to be able to say that. I contacted Mr. (Kirby) Hocutt, the athletic director here, and I told him my story. He said, ‘That’s great karma and it will certainly help us to win,’ and I said, ‘OK.’

This year, Eggleston is cheering on the Red Raiders as they make a run for their first national championship. He sat down with us to talk about his connection to the Final Four.

You talked about seeing the community support at all three schools during Final Four runs has been great to see. What has it been like to see the Texas Tech community come together?

A

I see more people being more interested because of what they have done. When they won the division championship and then going to the 16 then to the eight and now to the Final Four, the people that may not have been as interested in sports and athletics and basketball in particular, that interest has really increased.

To be able to see that, I mean I talked to students here that had no general like or dislike of athletics.

Because they are now in the Final Four, that interest has really sparked, and they’re more energized and enthusiastic about it. It’s really great to see students and faculty that may not have been interested had they not gone this far.

Q A

What is your prediction for Texas Tech and the Final Four?

I know that Michigan State University, see I also have a master’s

degree from Michigan State University, I got that in 1984. They had just won the championship with Magic Johnson just a few years before I got there. I have a like of Michigan State. Now Michigan State beat Michigan three times during the regular season. When Tech had to play Michigan, I had no question in my mind that Tech was going to beat Michigan, because Michigan State had beat Michigan.

We’re coming up against a very good reputation this year in Michigan State, but I still think that Tech has the technical skills to be able to overtake Michigan State.

Whoever they play, Auburn or Virginia, I think Tech can match any one of those teams equally. It will be a good, good turnout. I would like to say Tech is going to win, but of course, that’s a prediction that is partly unbelievable. I would still like to say that the energy and the level that we’re showing here at Tech is equal to the previous championship seasons I was involved in.
