Russia contacted US about Boston bomber WASHINGTON (AP) — Two U.S. officials briefed on the Boston marathon investigation say the Russian government contacted the FBI and the CIA separately in 2011 with concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE’-ehv), one of the men authorities say was behind the attacks. One of the officials says the CIA was contacted by Russia in the fall of 2011. Officials say Russia contacted the FBI in early 2011. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation. The FBI said its investigators found nothing to suggest Tsarnaev was part of an extremist group and shared that information back. Tsarnaev died in a police shootout.
Texas lawmakers consider workers’ rights bills AUSTIN (AP) — After one too many 60-hour weeks at a construction site where the boss skipped payments to workers, Guillermo Perez asked for his final paycheck. The boss had other ideas. “It was found he was acting in bad faith,” Perez said, describing the results of a state investigation to lawmakers at a hearing on Wednesday. “But he didn’t suffer no repercussions.” Perez, who ended up paying fines on his household bills as his family fell behind, urged the House Committee on Economic & Small Business Development to advance protections for workers. Wage theft was only one of several persistent concerns for working people to make a repeat appearance on their agenda. Members also heard two identical — and familiar — bills seeking to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Denim Day protests sexual assault myths By CAROLYN HECK STAFF WRITER
One in six women will be sexually assaulted or raped within their lifetime. One in four women will be raped between the ages of 18 and 22, and one in five women on college campuses will be raped. Those are some of the statistics given Wednesday during the Gender Fair 2013 Gender Forum, Denim Day in Action: Empowering Bystanders, in participation with Sexual Assault Awareness month. Wednesday was the national recognition of Denim Day, which started in 1998 when an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become an international symbol of protest against assumptions about rape. Alyssa Fiebrantz, a graduate teaching assistant and professor of gender communi-
cation studies; Lauran Schaefer, a graduate teaching assistant; and Eddie Falcan, a Texas Tech alumnus and member of V-Men, presented information during the forum on sexual assault, rape myth and rape culture in society. “Rape culture is one in which sex and violence are inherently connected because of a system of beliefs that promote sexual violence against designated parts of a population,” Schaefer said. Rape culture is pervasive, Falcan said, and reinforce societal gender norm stereotypes, which in turn leads to the objectification of women in the media and the further perpetuation of rape culture. Examples of gender norm stereotypes, he said, include defining men by tough, rich, strong, dominant, emotionless and aggressive traits, and defining women by nurturing, emotional, dependent, submissive, virgin, naïve and conservative traits. The Celebrate Diversity Student Organization Showcase was hosted Wednesday at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion to celebrate student organizations that have promoted diversity during the 2012-2013 year. The event, which was hosted by the Texas Tech Cross-Cultural Academic Advancement Center and the Diversity Welcome Ambassadors, included dinner, an awards ceremony and the opportunity for members of different organizations to socialize. Ricky Sherfield, unit coordinator for Student Engagement at the crosscultural center, said the event was designed to showcase the organizations that strive to be culturally inclusive on campus and in the Lubbock community. “It’s really about the students coming together,” he said, “and recognizing diversity on campus and letting the Texas Tech community know that we do celebrate diversity, and it should continue.” Sherfield said every Tech organization was invited to the event, and between 25 and 35 organizations attended and received awards.

Texas Republican Party Chairman Steve Munisteri spoke to Texas Tech’s Young Conservatives of Texas and the College Republicans about the future of Texas’ Republican Party on Wednesday. Munisteri founded the Young Conservatives of Texas and was elected State Republican Party Chairman in 2010 after beating incumbent Cathie Adams. During the speech, Munisteri addressed several topics, including how the party will reach minority voters, the importance of young activists and some issues facing Americans. “It would be just a shame to me if y’all don’t get that same chance,” he said, discussing the future of America. “Because I was able to be better off than the generation before me, just as my father was able to be better off than his generation. I just think it would be a terrible shame if your generation didn’t have a chance to be better off, and you absolutely can,” Considering the economy, he said America has a lot of resources and technol-

ogy, and the economy makes up one-fourth of the world’s economy. It is three times the size of China’s, he said, but the problem is with its budget. Munisteri said looking at President Barack Obama’s estimates, the U.S. will have a $25 trillion debt in 10 years. If interest rates are 10 percent, he said that means the U.S. would be paying $2.5 trillion per year for interest. “I don’t mean to seem melodramatic, but societies can come down when you get to that level of debt,” Munisteri said. “If you look at Greece, they had riots and they stormed parliament in the unrest in Spain. Some serious consequences can happen if you don’t watch what you’re doing. So these are problems that your generation is going to be facing.” If the majority thinks there is a need for change, Munisteri said it is up to the younger generations to take action, and that comes from the political process. At Tech, he encouraged the conservative organizations to not only volunteer for candidates, but to get others involved. One person can make a difference in campaigns, he said, and it is typically the
