n front of the largest Red Raider crowd of the 2018 season, the No. 9 Texas Tech baseball team secured its spot in the third super regionals in program history. The Red Raiders swept the Lubbock Regional, winning three-straight games to move on in the postseason. Entering the regional as the No. 1 seed, Tech defeated 4-seeded New Mexico State, 9-2, in the opening round; 2-seeded Louisville, 10-4, in the winners’ bracket; and Louisville again, 11-6, in the regional championship game. The Tech offense was as dominant during the regional as it had been throughout the regular season, scoring 30 runs over the weekend. A large contributor to the run total was senior designated hitter Zach Rheams, who finished his weekend at Dan Law Field with seven RBIs and three home runs. Rheams was named the Lubbock Regional MVP after going 4-for-4 with five RBIs in the championship game. He said hitting as well as he did was probably his career moment with Tech and was an awesome feeling. “This atmosphere, this college, this university, this coaching staff and this team have done so much for me,” Rheams said after Sunday’s game. “To do that with possibly, probably, it is my last home game, and to help my guys go to supers, it’s just an unbelievable feeling for me.” Seven Red Raiders were named to the Lubbock All-Regional team, including sophomore infielders Brian Klein and Josh Jung, junior outfielder Cody Farhat, sophomore outfielder Grant Little, senior designated player Zach Rheams, sophomore right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian and junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Shetter.

Bassoonist Kim Walker named new School of Music director Bassoonist Kim Walker will be the new director of the Texas Tech School of Music, the university announced last week. Walker, who previously was the dean and principal of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney in Australia, will officially start with Tech on Sunday, July 1, according to a Tech news release. She replaces Keith Dye, who has served as the interim director since June 2017. “It is with tremendous pleasure that I look forward to partnering
with the superb students, faculty and staff at the School of Music to realize their potential as they shape and impact the future of WALKER music,” Walker said in the release. “Together, we will build on the strengths of the school and university to prepare future generations who are ready for our global digital world, with expert leadership to create new, bold and daring opportunities.
Walker has held several administration and educational roles with other universities during her career. She started working with Indiana University as a music professor in 1994, according to the release, and also served as associate dean of research for the arts and humanities, associated dean for the vice chancellor, dean of faculties and director of arts and culture outreach. Ten years later in 2004, she began working with the Conservatorium of Music. While there, she served as a music professor, dean
of the Conservatorium of Music, and the university’s cultural ambassador. She also helped create a one-of-a-kind combined undergraduate degree program between music and medicine, according to the release. At Tech, Walker’s primary responsibilities will be to coordinate all aspects of the School of Music with the faculty and the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts. “During this very exciting time for both the School of Music and
the college, Kim Walker’s experience and vision will complement our strategic initiatives and help us all to raise the profile of the school and college nationally and internationally,” Tech College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean Noel Zahler said in the release. “She will help us create partnerships with other institutions, broaden our recruiting of highquality students and faculty and lift the visibility of the School of Music’s faculty and alumni.” @McKenziMorrisDT
