No. 5 Red Raiders' season ends with 4-3 loss to Sam Houston State By ALEXA BOUTWELL Sports Editor

After winning a share of the Big 12 Title and grabbing 45 total victories, the No. 5 Texas Tech Red Raiders 2017 baseball season came to a close on Monday. The Red Raiders hosted the NCAA Lubbock Regional and competed in a win-or-go-home game against Sam Houston State at Dan Law Field. Tech ultimately ended its season with a 4-3 loss to the Bearkats. With this being his final game as a Red Raider, senior infielder Hunter Hargrove said he admires the Tech program and all it has done

in his four-year career. He said he knows the talent that remains on the team and knows a trip to the College World Series is in their future. “It’s been a blessing. I thank coach (Tim) Tadlock and the staff for allowing me to play baseball at the highest level and especially getting to compete and go to Omaha,” Hargrove said. “Being a senior and seeing all these young guys, I have in doubt in my mind that coach Tadlock will get these guys back to Omaha.” The Red Raiders finished the season with a 45-17 overall record, a 23-6 home record and a 15-6 record

on the road. Tech also finished first in the Big 12 Conference in team hitting and second in team pitching, according to Big12Sports. “What a college baseball game first of all. One run game. You kind of knew when we went to, call it what you want, rubber match, game seven, you know if it’s close it can go either way,” Tech coach Tim Tadlock said. “Sam Houston State earned the right to win that game. They played great defense.” Right-handed pitcher Davis Martin got the start for the Red Raiders and pitched 4.1 innings. He allowed two runs and struck out six batters.

Hargrove had some solid at-bats for Tech going 3-5 at the plate. Along with his three hits, Hargrove also registered a double and one run. Junior infielder Orlando Garcia also accounted for Tech’s offensive with two hits and two RBIs during the game. In the top of the second, the Red Raiders started the inning strong when Hargrove hit his 26th double of the season to lead off. However, the momentum was short lived as the Bearkats grabbed the three outs without Tech scoring a run. Sam Houston State started its offensive showing in the bottom of the second with a double from

senior catcher Robie Rojas. An RBI single from sophomore infielder Hunter Hearn put the Bearkats up, 1-0. With runner on first and second, Tech snagged the double play to end the second inning with the Bearkats maintaining the onerun lead. Garcia started the fourth inning with his first hit of the day off a single to center field, then took the opportunity to steal second. However, Garcia would have the only hit of the inning for Tech as the team struggled to bring runs across the plate.
