fter losing the first championship game on Sunday night, Texas Tech came back strong on Monday afternoon and defeated Dallas Baptist 5-3 in an elimination game to advance to the Super Regionals.

“Guys compete. You get to this point in the year with your team and you’re going to have 27 guys out there that want to compete for 9 innings,” coach Tim Tadlock said. “Both teams did that and we’re fortunate to come out on the right side of that.”

In the first Lubbock Regional since 1999, the Raiders went 3-1, losing only to the Patriots on Monday night. This is the first time Tech has advanced to a Super Regional after hosting the opening round, according to Tech Athletics, and only the second time in program history they have advanced to the Super Regionals.

Two more former players arrested on burglary charges Two more former Texas Tech football players have been arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation.

According to The Associated Press, Dakota Allen, a sophomore linebacker, and Trace Ellison, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, were both arrested in connection with the theft of at least seven guns.

Ellison, who was arrested June 1, and Allen, who was arrested on June 2, have both been released on $5,000 bonds, according to

The AP. Ellison, Allen and Robert Castaneda are accused of breaking into a Lubbock home between Dec. 20 and Jan. 9, according to The AP. Castaneda who was arrested on May 27 according to a recent article from The Daily Toreador, was questioned and told police the jersey numbers of the other two individuals involved.

According to The AP, in the arrest warrant affidavit Castaneda said the other two individuals broke into the home in an attempt to steal money from a drug dealer who lived there, but took a gun safe with weapons instead. However, in Castaneda’s first statement with authorities he said he bought the guns illegally and cheaply with the intention of reselling them.

The AP also reported in the affidavit the owner of the stolen guns was in a pawnshop in March and found the stolen weapons there.

According to a recent article in The Daily Toreador, all three players were dismissed from the team by coach Kliff Kingsbury because they did not maintain student-athlete expectations.

There has been no official word yet on if these incidents are related. @DailyToreador

Women’s Rodeo team heads to finals The Texas Tech Women’s Rodeo Team won the Southwest Region title after four team victories and several individual winners, earning them a spot in the Collegiate National Final Rodeo.

The finals will start on June 11 in Casper, Wyoming according to Texas Tech’s website.

In over 10 rodeo competitions this season, the team scored 2,542 points, putting them over 1,000 points ahead of second place Tarleton State according to the website.

There are 16 different collegiate teams in the Southwest Region.

From the ten regional rodeos they competed in this season, Tech won first place in four of them and finished in the top five at all 10.

Kellie Collier, a sophomore agricultural communications from Hereford, is ranked 16th in the world for barrel racing, according to the website, and was named the Southwest Region All-Around Cowgirl.

Tech rodeo coach Brent Hodges is in his first year with the team and said at the beginning of the season the team set goals for the year and the women’s team met those goals and

then some according to the website.

“To be in my first year as coach and have this opportunity is something I knew could happen with this group, and along with the other ladies and men’s team members, they put in a lot of hours and work, challenged and supported each other and finished well,” Hodges said on the website.

The Tech women’s team won the national championship in 2012 and this will be their eighth appearance in the Collegiate National Finals Rodeo. @DailyToreador

Croslin Room to undergo construction Contruction has begun on the East entrance of the Texas Tech University Library and will remain under construction through the summer throughout the remainder of the summer session according to a Tech news release.

According to the release, the Croslin Room, which is part of the library that shares a courtyard with the Student

Union Building, began construction this May and is expected to be finished before classes begin in the fall.

Bella Gerlich, Dean of Libraries, said renovations will include leveling the sunken fountain areas and removing partition walls in order to allow for more space, according to the release.

There will be limited seating on the north and

south ends of the Croslin Room, according to the release, however the Sam’s Express located within that area will remain open throughout the summer and serving at its normal summer hours.

There will be no events hosted in that area of the Library until renovations are fully completed, according to the release. @DailyToreador

Alumni Association presents new military, veterans chapter Launched May 18, the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center started a new alumni chapter dedicated to military and veteran graduates of Texas Tech University.

According to an Alumni Center news release, Te c h h a s b e e n r e c o g nized nationally for it’s campus-wide support system for those who have served in the military. To increase that support, the chapter will be open to military, veterans, family members and anyone interested in supporting military service members.

The MVC is to encourage ongoing Tech graduates to stay connected to military and veteran graduates as they continue on with life after college, according to the Alumni Center website.

Along with connecting them to Tech the Alumni Center, according to their website, also hopes to assist in recruitment, retention and graduation of military and veteran students.

The new chapter will also increase the amount of scholarships and support activities for current military and veteran stu-

dents. It will also assist those students in transitions from campus to their career with mentoring programs, according to their website.

Because this chapter is open to anyone who is interested in supporting military and veterans, there is a wide array of people who can support the MVC. According to the Alumni Center’s website, the first 100 people to join the chapter will be designated as charter members.

Tropical Storm Colin makes landfall TA M PA , F l a . ( A P ) — Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Colin hit north Florida and southern Georgia on Monday, knocking out power in some areas and flooding roads on the Gulf coast.

Residents filled sandbags, schools closed early and graduation ceremonies were postponed as Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency.

The National Hurricane Center said Colin marked the earliest that a third named storm has ever formed in the Atlantic basin.

Colin was moving north-northeast at 23 mph (37 kph), and its center was about 35 miles southsoutheast of Apalachicola at 8 p.m. Maximum sustained winds were measured at 50 mph with higher gusts.

Early Monday, Ronald P. Milligan, 74, stopped by a park in St. Petersburg where authorities planned to distribute sandbags because the ditch in front of his home had filled during the previous evening’s rain.

Sandbags also were distributed in Tampa and cities and counties throughout the region.

The latest forecast for Colin called for the center of the storm to make landfall near the Big Bend area of Florida sometime Monday evening, and move across the Florida peninsula into Georgia and then move along or just off the South Carolina coast before heading out to sea.

Schools in at least one Florida Gulf Coast county were dismissed early Monday, and two high school graduations in the Tampa Bay area were postponed due to the storms, with both ceremonies being moved to Wednesday night and Thursday. Winds from Colin also closed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa.

Farther north at Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge roads were flooded and businesses sending home people early, said Andrew Gude, manager of the refuge for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “ We ’ r e t a k i n g c h a i n saws home so we can cut our way out of our neighborhoods and cut our way back into work tomorrow,” Gude said.

About 7,600 people were without power in the Tampa Bay area. Duke Energy said Monday afternoon it had 3,600 customers without electricity, while Tampa Electric Company said on its website that 4,022 people were experiencing outages. In Jacksonville on Florida’s Atlantic coast, about 2,300 customers were without power as heavy rains hit the area late Monday, according to the Jacksonville Energy Authority.

Colin is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, and forecasters said up to 8 inches are possible across north Florida, southeastern Georgia and coastal areas of the Carolinas through Tuesday.

First Friday trail showcases three Tech graduate student’s artwork

A variety of food truck vendors, Lubbock residents and art-lovers made their way to the corner of Avenue J and 5th street last week for the monthly First Friday Art Trail.

The artwork of three Tech Master of Fine Arts students; Kristen Swartz from Ohio, Libby Sanchez from Floydada and Ashley Busby from Houston was on display this month at the Tech Satellite Gallery.

Their exhibition “A Stitch Between Spaces,” features the work of the three students who each use the act of stitching as a way to engage the surface of art as object.

“The theme for our show is something that we found in common through our work,” Swartz said. “We all work in different mediums and some of us are mixed, so it was really interesting to see how each of us worked differently with the thread and how well that worked for our artwork.”

According to the three, the thread and string serve as a symbol of connection, physicality and the hand of the artist, manifesting uniquely in each respective body of work, transforming surface and space.

The interpretation of the theme varies throughout each artist; Busby said her pieces consisted of manipulating many surfaces.

“I have paper pieces that are torn and black canvas pieces that I worked off the wall,” Busby said. “ Using string I am joining these different pieces of surface

to create a new interpretation of landscape.”

Sanchez said her artwork uses fabric to refer to different icons like lipstick and Barbie shoes.

The icons, Sanchez said, help recreate different personas women go through in their lives.

“By using thread and weaving it in and out of the fabric we are able to represent the relation of public and private,” Sanchez said.

Swartz said some of her inspiration for her artwork comes from collecting photos from thrift stores.

Other inspirations, Swartz said, included examining old family photos, some of which, she was not alive for when they were taken.

“A lot of it for me was an exploration between different generations of people who were related to me and people who are also not related to me,” Swartz said. “So it was interesting to see how everything fits in together having collisions of gold, white and black colors.”

Busby said the exhibition was the first time the three have worked together on a project.

It was interesting to find out how the work met and how they could display it in a space, she said.

“I think it worked real nicely,” Busby said. “Being able to show it at the art trail is awesome because everyone from Lubbock can come and view our work.”

The exhibition will be on view at the Tech Satellite Gallery by appointment through Saturday June 18, 2016.

Silent Wings Museum commemorates D-Day

With Monday marking the 72nd anniversary of DDay, the Silent Wings Museum hosted a weekend of commemorative events to celebrate the allied troops invasion of Normandy, France.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the museum opened their doors to the public, free of charge, so that people could learn about the history of World War II and the events of that day in 1944.

“It’s cool to remember an important day in our country’s history. It was a big deal back then,” Randolph Woodward with Greatest Generation Aircraft said. “Just keeping history alive, (this event is) educating people and not enough people are educated about what happened in our country’s history. To me it’s a very important thing and it’s why I’m involved in the organization that I’m involved in.”

Part of the weekend included documentary showings, a musical performance, children’s activities and appearances from the US 1st Infantry Division Living History Group.

Andrew Taylor, a member of the group, said Word War II has always intrigued him and this event is a way to remember that time in history while also supporting the museum.

“I was really into World War II when I was a kid,” Taylor said. “I just like dressing up in the World War II stuff.”

The museum also brought in classic World War II equipment and vehicles for people to enjoy and learn about during the event, including vintage jeeps and a C-47 aircraft.

People could take a ride over Lubbock in the plane to experience what those who served in the war went through.

Abel Garcia and his son Zackery rode in the plane on Sunday for the boy’s birthday, Garcia said, because Zackery has expressed interest in joining the Marines when he grows up.

Garcia, who served in the Marines himself, said riding in the plane was a once in a lifetime experience and was completely different than when he was a Marine.

“Stepping on to the plane I was getting butterflies because I knew people back

in the past, in the 1940’s and such, they rode these,” Garcia said. “When you go in there it’s thin metal and you think wow. Compared to what we fly in right now, the nice airplanes, you go in there and it’s bone stock.”

The C-47 plane was originally ordered by American Airlines and was built in 1942. Woodward said Greatest Generation Aircraft, the company that brought in the plane, is unsure of the plane’s service record dur-

ing the war but these types of aircrafts were the ones to drop troops on to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. They take the aircraft around the country, Woodward said, to tell people about the history of both the plane and the people that served America during the war.

“That’s why we do it,” Woodward said. “It’s to honor these men and women that fought during World War II.” @DailyToreador

Tech got an early jump on Dallas Baptist after a lead off double from junior right fielder Stephen Smith. Smith was brought in to score after sacrifice hits from Hargrove and Gardner, making the score 1-0 after one inning.

Dallas Baptist tied the game after a lead off triple in the top of the third, but Tech responded after another leadoff double to center field from Smith. After two walks to Hargrove and Neslony to load the bases, a balk was called on Dallas Baptist and the Raiders took a 2-1 lead.

“It all goes hand-in-hand,” Tadlock said. “We get a run early for Ryan (Moseley) and he’s able to out and relax a little bit and pound the strikezone. I’m just really proud of all of them.”

Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley started the game for Tech and only allowed one run through his four and a third innings.

“I’ve struggled a little bit but that happens in the year, so I wasn’t worried about that at all,” Moseley said. “Everybody on the field had tons of confidence in me and wanted me to go out there and throw, so that was huge for me.”

Moseley was replaced in the 5th inning by junior lefthander Hayden Howard, finished out the game for Tech despite a two-run homerun in the 6th inning.

The Tech offense was

able to respond quickly in the bottom half of the 6th and scored two after a double from sophomore shortstop Orlando Garcia, who brought in three of Tech’s six runs.

“I haven’t had such a great year, but a day like today when I’m able to pick them up, I try to take advantage of that,” Garcia said. “I do as much as I can for the team and try to be a good teammate when I’m not on and that’s the same for the 2-3-4-5. Those guys did the same thing today. They didn’t do as well but they were able to stay there and be great teammates to us.”

The rest of the game was a shutout for Howard, who picked up the win on Monday. He was named the most outstanding player of the regional after a game-ending pickoff against Dallas Baptist and a dominating performance from New Mexico.

Tadlock said that while Howard probably did not have his best day today, he did what he set out to do and finished strong.

“It’s probably never about really having great stuff from any of these guys,” Tadlcok said. “It’s about executing and throwing pitches with conviction and doing what you set out to do. I would say both those guys did that today.”

Tech will host East Carolina in the NCAA Championship Super Regional round later this week at Dan Law Field. They look to advance to the College World Series for the second time in three years. @TheDT_Sports

Muhammad Ali New Tech football game times announced documents to be released

Texas Tech announced five kickoff times on June 1 for the upcoming 2016 season football season.

The times announced were all late evening or night games, something Tech did not have many of last year.

The Red Raiders will start their season at home on Sept. 3 against Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. They will then travel to Arizona

State for a 9 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 10.

The next two games for Tech will be played at Jones AT&T Stadium.

They will face Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. on Sept.

17, followed by a Thursday night game against Kansas on Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Te c h w i l l e n d t h e i r regular season against Baylor at 5 p.m. at AT&T

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Muhammad Ali and his innermost circle started a document years ago that grew so thick they began calling it “The Book.”

Its contents will soon be revealed.

In the pages, the boxing great planned in exacting detail how he wished to say goodbye to the world.

“The message that we’ll be sending out is not our message — this was really designed by The Champ himself,” said Timothy Gianotti, an Islamic studies scholar who for years helped to plan the services.

“The love and the reverence and the inclusivity that we’re going to experience over the coming days is really a reflection of his message to the people of planet Earth.”

The 74-year-old threetime heavyweight champion wanted the memorial service in an arena. He wanted multiple religions to have a voice while honoring the traditions of his Muslim faith. And he wanted ordinary fans to attend, not just VIPs. He was never downcast when talking about his

death, said Bob Gunnell, an Ali family spokesman.

He recalled Ali’s own words during meetings planning the funeral: “It’s OK. We’re here to do the job the way I want it. It’s fine.”

The final revisions were made days before Ali died Friday at an Arizona hospital, his family by his side.

For years, the plan was to have Ali’s body lie in repose at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Gunnell said. That tribute was dropped at the last minute because his wife, Lonnie, worried it would cause the center to be shut down and knew people would want to gather there in grief.

In its place, a miles-long procession was added that will carry Ali’s body across his beloved hometown. It will drive past the museum built in his honor, along the boulevard named after him and through the neighborhood where he grew up, raced bicycles and shadowboxed down the streets.

In a city accustomed to capturing the world’s attention for just two minutes during the Kentucky Derby each year,

Ali’s memorial service Friday looms as one of the most historic events in Louisville’s history.

Former presidents, heads of nations from around the globe, movie stars and sports greats will descend upon the city to pay final respects to The Louisville Lip. “It’s been a really bittersweet time for our city,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.

“We’ve all been dreading the passing of The Champ, but at the same time we knew ultimately it would come.

It was selfish for us to think that we could hold on to him forever. Our job now, as a city, is to send him off with the class and dignity and respect that he deserves.”

Former President Bill Clinton, a longtime friend, will deliver the eulogy at the funeral at the KFC Yum! Center, where the 15,000 seats are likely to be filled.

Others speakers will include representatives of multiple faiths, including Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Mormonism.

Some are lifelong friends. Others Ali simply admired.

Viticulture program offers unique experience

As the Wine industry booms in Texas, Texas Tech is still the only University in the state that offers a bachelor’s degree program in the wine making industry.

Started in 2009, Tech’s Viticulture and Enology Program offers an outstanding hands-on learning experience to students who are interested in growing superior grapes and producing award winning-wines.

Thayne Montague, Associate Professor of Horticulture has been teaching in the department of Plants and Soil in Tech since 1999.

“I teach Principles of Viticulture, which is the first basic course students take while in the program,” Montague said.

In the class, Montague said they go over the basic physiology of how grapes grow, how the vines grow leaves as well as all the characteristics of each soil.

While students learn in class, they also gain hands-on experience in the labs associated with the classes.

“Students learn the best in the labs because they get hands on experience with classes such as weeding,” Montague said. “While it is

important to read about it and know the terms, we also take them out to show them what weed is like and how it affect the plant and also the process of getting ride of them.”

While Montague teaches student getting a bachelors, Kirk Williams, a viticulture certificate instructor teaches the non-degree credit classes called the viticulture certificate program.

“I teach the non-credit aspect of the program.”

Williams said. “This program is designed for working professionals or people who would like to enter into the industry or people who are already in the industry who would like to gain some skills that they may not have gotten while working.”

Out of the six courses that lead to the certificate, five of them are taken online while the sixth class, Vineyard practices consisting of four sessions, is conducted in the Tech vineyard at the Hill Country University Center in Fredericksburg, Texas.

“During vineyard practices, students learn things like vine planting, pruning, vine nutrition, irrigation, scheduling and all sorts of hands-on experience to further their knowledge and

what they already learned.”

Williams said.

Julie David, Food and Beverage Manager at MCM Elegante Hotel & suites said she is interested in the viticulture certificate program.

“I have always had an interest in wines,” David said.

“I love the stories of where the grapes are from, harvested and what makes the different wineries special.”

David said she recently learned about the viticulture certificate program offered at Tech and she would like to enroll in the program.

“As a working professional, I like how the program is offered online because I will not be able to go to in-class sessions due to my job,” David said. “The online program is conducive with my schedule because I can go to work in the day time and still do school work at home at my own pace.“ David said she is currently looking into getting more information about what the program has to offer.

“I am doing some research on the cost of the program as well as how long it goes for,” David said.

“And if everything goes well, I would be enrolled either in the fall or the upcoming spring semester.” @DailyToreador

Charges dismissed for Justices taking on new man once on death row Texas death row cases DALLAS (AP) — A judge on Monday dismissed murder charges against a man who had been on death row after he was convicted in the 1977 slaying of a 21-year-old woman in East Texas and sentenced to death.

State District Court Judge Jack Carter approved an agreement between prosecutors and attorneys for Kerry Max Cook to throw out the charges.

Cook has been free since 1999 and has spent decades seeking a full exoneration.

It was determined that Cook’s rights were violated, in part by the presentation of false testimony by a witness called at his original trial, according to the judge’s order. Prosecutors at the time also suppressed a taped interview with a manager at the apartment complex where Linda Jo Edwards was killed

that would have helped Cook’s defense, the order said.

Attorneys representing Cook had argued that six rounds of DNA testing from 1999 to 2015 failed to identify any evidence proving he was at the scene of the crime.

Monday’s ruling sends the matter to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals where Cook will seek a full exoneration. If that’s granted, Cook could be eligible for more than $3 million in compensation from the state, plus additional benefits, for the 20 years he was imprisoned, according to The Dallas Morning News. He now lives in New Jersey.

Cook was convicted in 1978 in the slaying of Edwards in her Tyler apartment and was sentenced to death.

Cook maintained his innocence and the verdict was

overturned, but legal wrangling continued for decades.

The DNA testing confirmed the presence of semen found in Edwards’ underwear from James Mayfield, her boss and former lover whose extramarital affair with Edwards ended badly, the lawyers contend.

Although Mayfield was considered a longtime suspect in the case, he’s never been charged in relation to the crime. Mayfield couldn’t be reached for comment but he has denied any role in Edwards’ killing in the past. A call to his attorney was not immediately returned Monday.

Court documents Monday indicate the case took a turn in April when authorities interviewed Mayfield again and granted him immunity from prosecution.

Trump schedules fundraisers in Texas WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump plans at least five fundraisers in the coming weeks, significantly accelerating his cash chase as he builds a finance operation from scratch.

The billionaire businessman mostly funded his primary race through personal loans, but he has partnered with the Republican National Committee to raise money for his general election bid. He’ll likely face Democrat Hillary Clinton, who with her allies has set a $1 billion goal for the election.

Trump has booked a June 16 event in Dallas, a June 17

lunch in San Antonio and a June 18 event in Houston, according to emails obtained

by The Associated Press.

The following week, Trump and his Republican allies will raise money in his hometown of New York City.

There, he’ll attend a dinner June 21 and a breakfast the next morning, both hosted by Woody Johnson, the billionaire owner of the Jets and a chief fundraiser for 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Invitations for the New York events are being distributed Monday, according to a spokesman for Johnson.

dential candidate, a May 25 dinner at the Los Angeles home of friend and fellow real estate investor Tom Barrack. It netted more than $5 million. A day earlier, he attended a small donor gathering in Albuquerque ahead of one of his rallies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Monday it will review two death-row cases from Texas, the nation’s top death-penalty state, as the court continues to tinker around the edges of capital punishment.

The appeals come from two African-American death row inmates from Houston, Bobby Moore and Duane Buck.

Moore, sentenced to death more than 35 years ago, says he is ineligible to be executed because he is intellectually disabled.

Buck argues his sentence should be thrown out because it is tinged with race. A jury voted to sentence Buck to death after a defense expert testified that black people were more likely to commit violence. Buck’s lawyers have fought for years to win a new sentencing hearing.

Neither case poses a broad challenge to the death penalty. Just last week, the justices rejected a constitutional attack on capital punishment from an inmate in Louisiana.

But the Supreme Court maintains a steady stream of cases dealing with death sentences and race, intellectual disability and the fairness of state death penalty trials.

The court’s January decision in a Florida case led to a halt in executions in that state, and also raised questions about carrying out death sentences in neighboring Alabama.

Last month, the court effectively threw out the conviction and death sentence

of a black man who faced an all-white jury in the killing of an elderly white woman in north Georgia.

Texas has carried out 537 executions since the Supreme Court allowed the resumption of capital punishment in the mid-1970s, more than a third of all executions in the United States. Harris County, which includes Houston, accounts for 126 executions, more than any state other than Texas.

“Both these cases reflect Texas’ exceptionalism when it comes to the death penalty,” said Jim Marcus, co-director of the Capital Punishment Clinic at the University of Texas School of Law. The Harris County district attorney’s case declined to

comment on Monday’s orders.

Buck came close to being executed in 2011, before the justices stepped in with a lastminute reprieve. Three years later, the court denied a fullblown review of Buck’s case.

This time around, the appeal focuses on a claim that Buck’s legal representation was constitutionally deficient.

He was convicted of capital murder and sent to death row for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend and a man at her Houston apartment in July 1995. During the punishment phase of Buck’s 1997 trial, psychologist Walter Quijano testified under cross-examination by a Harris County prosecutor that black people were more likely to commit violence.
