or the second time in program history, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are headed to Omaha. The No. 5 national seed defeated East Carolina 11-0 in a winner-take-all game on Sunday at Dan Law Field to secure their spot

in the College World Series. Coach Tim Tadlock is taking his second team to the College World Series in his four years at Tech. He said the fans in Lubbock are the best around and they appreciate baseball, which makes the postseason journey even more special for him. “I don’t think there’s a place like (Dan Law Field) in the country to play in,” Tadlock said.

“It’s a special deal playing out there and we’re going to take it a little bit north here next week.” The Red Raiders lost the first game of the NCAA Championship Lubbock Super Regional on Friday 8-6, and were put into a position where they had to win two in a row to keep their season alive. Senior first baseman Eric Gutierrez said the team felt fine after Friday’s loss and kept

a never-say-die attitude. “You’re always going to face adversity and we faced it throughout the year and we responded good through,” Gutierrez said. “We didn’t even feel a little bit that we were against the wall. We just kept playing our game and having fun.”

Lubbock, Tech students react to Orlando mass terror shooting By MICHAEL CANTU News Editor

Outpours of emotion flooded social media and most other avenues of communication Sunday after news of a shooting in Orlando, Florida. It was 2 a.m. Sunday morning when the shooting occurred and lasted near 5 a.m. with a hostage situation and police standoff, according to the Associated Press. Omar Mateen, the gunman who was gunned down at the scene of the crime killed 49 other people at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Quickly after, Lubbock residents began to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy. Alongside social media post with hashtags relating to the event there was also a vigil hosted Sunday evening at St. Johns United

Methodist Church at 1501 University Avenue. The idea for vigil was sparked by Kevin Young, Pastor of the church, however he was unable to speak to The Daily Toreador to comment on the vigil. “This was initially to provide solace for our community and to provide a safe space to come together and (for people to) feel what they feel,” Stephanie Council, director of music ministry for St. John’s said. At the vigil people also wrote letters that were to be sent to the nightclub in Orlando, Council said. Though there is no further plans from the church on the books as of know, she said, they are encouraging people to publically support and advocate for help towards the victims and their families. Students of Texas Tech are also express-

ing their sympathy for those involved, family and victims, Elizabeth Kennedy a pre-med student from Houston said. “I think of their families, immediately,” Kennedy said. “What can they feel, they must be torn apart?” The frightening part about this situation is it can happen anywhere at any time, she said, which makes living everyday life extremely unpredictable. Besides students and residents offering condolences Lubbock’s alternative lifestyle nightclub, Luxor Club located at 2211 Marsha Sharp Freeway, expressed to the public their grief. According to the club’s Facebook page they were closed Sunday evening to mourn and honor the people killed in Orlando. Though

in most situations the show must go on, according to their Facebook page, management felt it more appropriate to not open for the evening. According to the clubs website they will not be open again until Friday evening at 9 p.m. The Daily Toreador reached out to Luxor, but was unable to get a response. But the impact that is felt in Lubbock shows the coming together of all types of communities around the country, Council said. It should be an obligation for everyone to be both welcoming and accepting of the different types of individuals that live around others. “It is powerful to come together,” she said, “and meaningful for many of us who needed that space.” @MichaelCantuDT
