4th on Broadway Annual parade draws large crowds

F

or the 26th year, Broadway Festivals’ 4th on Broadway celebration brought people of all ages together to celebrate Independence Day. The four-day event started on Friday with the First Friday Art Trail and was followed on Saturday and Sunday with street dances and concerts with performances

by Turnpike Troubadours and The Dirty River Boys.

On July Fourth, the day started with the annual parade that traveled down Broadway all the way to Mackenzie Park. Once at

the park, there were activities and concerts and the evening concluded with the Gandy’s Fireworks Extravaganza.

According to the event’s website, their goal is to enhance the quality of life and to embrace Lubbock’s unique history. With music Texas country music, Latino music and performances from several local bands, they are able to cater to a wide variety of people and make the holiday enjoyable for everyone in attendance.

parade, each year because it gives them a chance to spend the holiday together.

“My family’s favorite part about the parade was seeing Captain America and the horses,” Mitchell

said. “We love spending the day with the family.”

This is only the second year the event has been hosted at Mackenzie Park, according to a previous article in The DT, and the

park was utilized this year to have eight different stages and four separate vendor rows according to the website.

The Picnic in the Park event included several at-

tractions for children with a petting zoo, pony rides and inflatables.

The Huey family said they have several children and the event allows them to be kids and get free can-

dy, which they really enjoy.

Tech Museum opens new Death toll from Iraq fashion history exhibit bombing climbs up to 157 A new exhibit is open at the Museum of Texas Tech University that highlights the evolution of fashion.

With more than 2,000 pieces of fashion in the museum’s collection, just over 115 accessories were selected to be a part of the Hats and Purses and Shoes…Oh My! exhibit according to a Tech news release.

Of all the pieces included, some date back to the 1830s, according to the release, with the most recent pieces being from the 1980s.

“Selecting only 115 accessories for the exhibit was a challenge with all the fabulous examples in the collection. The stories behind each object and the events to which they were worn are numerous,” Marian Ann Montgomery, curator of clothing and textiles said in the release.

The focus of the exhibit is geared on the importance of fashion and the evolution of accessories from basic objects to creative works of art according to the release.

“It is fascinating to see the

development of shoes from the high button boots that walked the dusty streets of West Texas before the advent of the automobile, to silk pumps embroidered in gold from Italy,” Gary Morgan, executive director of the Museum of Texas Tech, said in the release.

BAGHDAD (AP) — The death toll from the truck bombing at a bustling Baghdad commercial street rose to 157 on Monday, Iraqi authorities said, as Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered new security measures in the capital.

The attack early Sunday, claimed by the Islamic State group, was one of the worst single bombings in Iraq over more than a decade of war and insurgency. It underscored the IS group’s ability to strike the Iraqi capital despite a string of battlefield losses elsewhere in the country and fueled public anger toward the government.

The suicide bomber blew up his explosivesladen vehicle in Baghdad’s mostly Shiite Karada district, a favorite destination

for shoppers — especially during the holy month of Ramadan. The streets and sidewalks were filled with young people and families after they had broken their daylight fast.

Police and health officials said Monday the toll reached 157 but that it was likely to increase even further as rescuers are still looking for missing people. Officials said at least twelve people are confirmed missing. At least 190 people were wounded, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to reporters.

A string of smaller bombings elsewhere in Baghdad on Monday killed 10 people and wounded 31, the officials said.

In a statement issued

Sunday evening, al-Abadi ordered security forces to stop using a repeatedlydiscredited hand-held bomb detection device. He also ordered the reopening of an investigation on the procurement of the British-made electronic wands, called ADE 651s.

In 2010, British authorities arrested the director of the British company ATSC Ltd. on fraud charges, prompting Iraqis to open their own investigation into alleged corruption. Iraqi authorities made some arrests, but the investigation went nowhere and the device remained in use.

On Monday evening, Associated Press reporters saw a number of the devices still being used at checkpoints around the capital.

White House cancels annual picnic WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — The White House says it’s canceling its annual Fourth of July picnic and fireworks watch because of rainy weather soaking the nation’s capital.

But scheduled performances by rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer-

songwriter Janelle Monae (moh-NAY’) will go on indoors. The artists will perform in the White House East Room for an audience of military families, administration staff, and supporters and guests of President Barack Obama and his family.

Obama is scheduled to make brief remarks to kick off the evening’s festivities.

It’s the second consecutive year that rain has led Obama and his wife, Michelle, to cancel its annual Fourth of July barbecue for military members and their families.

Suicide bomber hits near US Consulate DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A suicide bomber carried out an attack early on Monday near the U.S. Consulate in the western Saudi Arabian city of Jiddah, according to the Interior Ministry.

The ministry said the attacker detonated his suicide vest when security guards approached him near the parking lot of a hospital. The attacker died and two security men were lightly wounded, according to the ministry statement, which was published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. Some cars in the parking lot were damaged.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour alTurki was quoted in the statement as saying the guards noticed the man was acting suspiciously at an intersection on the corner of the heavily fortified U.S. Consulate in Jiddah, near the Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital and a mosque.

Most of the consulate’s staff had reportedly moved offices to a new location.

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia confirmed there were no casualties or injuries among the consular staff. The embassy said it remains in contact with Saudi authorities as they investigate.

Tech regent fundraising hurts credibility O

ne thing that has always impressed me is when I am told by a professor or instructor that coming to a university is a way to create an open mind, one that is not targeted easily by demagoguery and misinformation.

It is then I know I am within a foundation that is set on opening up minds and stepping out of the boundaries of lucratively dangerous appeals to burdensome restrictions on the general public.

In short, I expect those who are also in charge of universities dealings to also take note and try their best to keep themselves well informed and free from the ethos-appealing ways of damaging, unplanned politicians.

So you could imagine how discouraging it is to see one of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents, John D. Steinmetz, system regent and president and chief executive officer of Vista Bank, raising his hand like a young school boy to get the attention of the bombastic

campaign of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

It was reported last week from Politico that both Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee added more than 80 bundlers, people who gather contributions from many different areas and levels, to their joint finance operations.

Of those nearly 80 people, Steinmetz’s name appeared on this list.

Now, one’s own political opinion is definitely something I respect, even if it makes me want to barf, however we should all be weary when it comes to the man making big boy decisions.

Like Trump, Steinmetz has been known for making back-alley deals that put everybody but him in danger.

Appointed by former Gov. Rick Perry in 2011, his intro-

duction brought unwanted and rather embarrassing attention to Tech.

According to numerous articles around the time of his introduction, Steinmetz was gaining attention from the community because of how shady his instatement into the Board of Regents was — one might even go as far to say it was all for political gain (insert sarcastically surprised face here).

On three different applications for his position, Steinmetz incorrectly listed his education, according to a 2011 article from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

This sparked lots of controversy as his application listed him as a 2005 graduate from Tech’s School of Banking, when in reality he completed a 10-day intermediate leveled course, according to The AJ. This wasn’t the first time this happened either. According to the article, in 2008 he was able to get away with his claim that his application was accepted again by Perry to be on the Brazos River Authority Board of Directors.

Fortunately for us when his appointment ended he was not reinstated.

But all the speculation and reservations people had about Steinmetz should be brought to light again as he is representing Tech on his endeavor to try and get Trump elected.

Maybe I’m shining light in the wrong area here, but could it be possible Steinmetz is just doing this to advance himself even more into Texas or nation-wide

I’m not saying the United State’s education system is pristine, but good Lord I do not want it destroyed. politics — regardless something smells fishy.

According to that same article, Steinmetz’s qualification was also called into question by people who knew him.

“John is one of the least ethical people I have ever

known, and has earned a reputation as being dishonest and self-serving with a number of very influential Texas Tech graduates and supporters,” Phillip Richardson, Tech alumnus wrote. “It will be a sad day for my alma mater if you appoint John to this prestigious position.”

Geoff Wayne, another alumnus of Tech also expressed the same sentiment.

Mind you, these are not people who have been thwarted

by Steinmetz’s unprofessionalism but people who have know him professionally.

Not only is Steinmetz’s appointment and connection with Tech already a bad look on the school, but also his public endorsement and fundraising for Trump just adds fuel to the fire.

It would be one thing if the Trump campaign had at least a small residue of policies pertaining to higher education, however that is not the case. Politifact exposed this in a recent article in which they conclude he has not released any hard evidence that he has a clearly defined plan to reduce the

cost of higher education.

In fact, higher education in general is ostensibly a non-existent issue with the Trump campaign, according to the article.

It is rather clear Steinmetz is not working to help out his school but rather to help in destroying the public education system as it stands. I’m not saying the United State’s education system is pristine, but good Lord I do not want it destroyed.

This in and of itself shows that Steinmetz’s efforts are not good fpr both the student population and university. There should be public outcry from both the students and faculty of Tech to have this man removed from his position.

According to the Tech System’s website his term will end Jan. 31, 2017 and I think without him this school will be better off.

Steinmetz was appointed by a man who knows nothing, he is rooting for a man that knows nothing and if I were to guess Steinmetz himself knows nothing. @MichaelCantuDT

California exhibit aims for ‘Surfer Republican’ Russian’s debate on provocative plant unlikely advocate in Congress OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — It’s known as Mary Jane, ganja, Chronic and even the sticky icky and has been featured in countless movies, including one that warned of its dangers, “Reefer Madness.”

Now, marijuana is the subject of a contemporary history and science exhibit.

“Altered State: Marijuana in California,” a one-of-its-kind museum exhibition focusing on the topic, is open through the summer at the Oakland Museum of California.

Set against the backdrop of a California ballot measure this year asking voters to legalize marijuana’s recreational use, the exhibition features artwork, political documents and posters, scientific displays, and interactive and multimedia exhibits all meant

to provoke questions and conversations about the provocative plant.

“We have designed an open and participatory experience to engage anyone who has an opinion or wants to learn more about the complex issues and information about this topic,” said Associate Curator of Natural Sciences Sarah Seiter.

“We’re interested in presenting a forum for all sides of deep community conversations about marijuana, its history, politics, culture and impacts on our state,” Seiter said.

The exhibit comes at a time when 35 states already have medical marijuana laws on the books and four states and Washington, D.C., have legalized weed for recreational use.

It is organized into 10

different areas of focus — Cannabis Science, Medical Marijuana, Profitable Pot, Sacred Ganja, Criminal Dope, Creative Grass, Evil Weed, Politically Loaded, Youth and Weed, and Recreational Reefer. It was a two-year project with about 100 collaborators.

“Weed has a lot of fans,” Seiter said. “We didn’t want to open ourselves up to criticism. We wanted to do our homework.”

Highlights of the exhibition include live and preserved specimens of cannabis on loan to the museum, a walk-in installation by artist Cybele Lyle that alters viewers’ perspectives of space and time, and a “Cannabis Confessional” that allows visitors to share their private, anonymous thoughts about marijuana.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When several members of Congress accused Vladimir Putin’s Russia of human rights abuses and aggression toward its neighbors, a veteran California congressman stood virtually alone in urging a more cautionary stance.

For 69-year-old Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a self-described “surfer Republican,” this wasn’t a totally unexpected position: he’s long been virtually the lone pro-Russian voice on Capitol Hill.

“Right from the beginning we’ve had this incredible hostility,” Rohrabacher, who has defended President Vladimir Putin and urged a dialogue with the Kremlin, lamented at a recent congressional hearing. He urged both Russia and the United States at the time to “take a deep breath and a

step back.”

This past spring, Rohrabacher’s position drew support from Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who advocates giving relations with Moscow another chance. “Common sense says this cycle of hostility must end,” Trump said in a speech in April.

A former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, the 14-term Rohrabacher takes pride in having worked to weaken “our major global enemy at that time, the Soviet Union.” A large photo in his office shows him in the hills of Afghanistan in the 1980s, where, he told The Associated Press in an interview, he launched rockets at Soviet positions as a volunteer fighter.

Trump blames media for tweet uproar WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is blaming the press for the fuss over an anti-Hillary Clinton tweet that appeared to depict the Star of David atop a pile of cash.

It was his first response to the matter since his official account tweeted— then deleted — the image Saturday in the face of an uproar over its potentially anti-Semitic connotations. Trump’s account later posted a new version with a circle in place of the six-point star.

“Dishonest media is try-

ing their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the Star of David rather than a Sheriff ’s Star, or plain star!”

Trump tweeted Monday.

It remains unclear where the campaign found the image, but it previously appeared on a white supremacist message board filled with anti-Semitic messages as well as the Twitter feed of a self-identified comedian who tweeted out provocative and offensive images.

Trump’s campaign has not responded to questions since Saturday about who posted

the message and where it was found.

Sarah Bard, Clinton’s director of Jewish out reach, said in a statement Monday that “Trump’s use of a blatantly anti-Semitic image from racist websites to promote his campaign” was part of a pattern. “Now, not only won’t he apologize for it, he’s peddling lies and blaming others,” she added. “Trump should be condemning hate, not offering more campaign behavior and rhetoric that engages extremists.”

Tech alum earns spot on Team USA

After placing second in the 400-meter dash during the final round of the Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., Texas Tech alumnus Gil Roberts earned his spot on Team USA for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Roberts still holds the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash school records according to the Tech Athletics website.

He earned All-American honors in 2008, 2009 and 2011, according to the website, and was selected to the first team in 2011.

In 2011 Roberts was the International Association of Athletics Federations Indoor World Champion in the 400-meter dash according to the Tech Athletics website.

The following year he was the 400-meter indoor and outdoor national champion.

During the trials, Roberts stayed consistent and placed second overall in all three rounds according to the Tech Athletics website. He ran a 45.40 in the first round, followed by a 44.67 in round two and 44.73 in the finals.

Durant announces he will join Warriors OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kevin Durant decided his best chance for “growth” means leaving his beloved Oklahoma City behind for a big move out West to join the Golden State Warriors to play alongside Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Loyola fires Swoopes following investigations CHICAGO (AP) — Loyola University has parted ways with women’s basketball coach Sheryl Swoopes.

The school said in April that it would investigate allegations against Swoopes brought by former players.

One former player, Cate Soan, has said Swoopes humiliated her and created a hostile environment.

On Sunday, the school released a three-sentence statement.

“Sheryl Swoopes is no longer serving as the women’s basketball coach at Loyola University Chicago,” athletic director Steve Wat-

son said in the statement.

“A search for her replacement will begin immediately.

Loyola thanks Sheryl for her service to the women’s basketball program.”

Swoopes has been at the private Chicago university for three seasons with a record of 31-62. She was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this year. She was the first player signed by the WNBA and won three Olympic gold medals.

Late Sunday night, Swoopes’ spokeswoman Kimberly Blackwell released a statement.
