Kingsbury addresses concerns for next season at Big 12 Media Day By AUSTIN WATTS

Managing Editor
t this year’s Big 12 Media Day, Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury and various members of the Red Raiders football team discussed the upcoming season at the Star in Frisco. Senior linebacker Dakota Allen, senior defensive back Jah’Shawn Johnson, junior offensive lineman Travis Bruffy and senior wide receiver Ja’Deion High all spoke to the media alongside their coach, answering various questions about the upcoming season and the high expectations for Tech’s defense. Kingsbury answered several questions over the course of the day, most of which revolved around the current question mark at quarterback heading into the season. Kingsbury also spoke about Tech’s ability to replicate the defensive success the team showed last season. “Obviously, it’s preseason so you take everything with a grain of salt. But excited for Coach Gibbs and that defensive staff and those defensive players,” Kingsbury said. “When Coach Gibbs took the job four years ago he kind of had to redo it all. He had a vision, knew what he wanted to do but had to go through two tough years. To his credit, he stuck to his guns, with his philosophy and his recruiting and now we’re making strides on that side of the football. So have to credit him a ton with sticking it out and just having continuity on that side of the ball to develop a culture and identity that those defensive players and staff are taking a lot of pride in now.” Leading Tech’s defense this season will be Allen, who has shown an ability to be a consistent playmaker and run stopper, with an ability to cover the middle as well. He had 102 tackles last season, along with two interceptions and two sacks, according to Tech Athletics. Allen was selected Monday to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, along with a selection to the 2018 Preseason All-Big 12 team. Despite missing a season at Tech and being featured on Last Chance U, Allen returned to Tech last season and was voted a team captain, before putting together a strong 2017 junior campaign. Because of this notoriety, Kingsbury said Allen has been a strong recruiting tool for the Red Raiders. “As far as Dakota goes, the Netflix thing was huge, they all saw him on there, he was portrayed in a very good light and he’s a good player as well,” Kingsbury said. “So you combine those things, and he’s visible right now to those younger players.” Regarding the unsure status of Tech’s quarterback position, Kingsbury said no starter has been selected yet. He did say he would like to enter the year with one guy leading the offense, rather than juggling QBs for a few games. Despite nobody holding a lead on the position battle yet, Kingsbury does expect either junior McLane Carter, sophomore Jett Duffey or freshman Alan Bowman to win the starting job at some point prior to the season opener.
