After severe weather caused the cancellation of part of Broadway Festivals’ 4th on Broadway celebration on July 4, people in Lubbock celebrated the holiday on Sunday with the Reagor-Dykes Mitsubishi Fireworks Extravaganza. Despite rain earlier in the day, the fireworks show went on as planned. However, the Covenant Health and FirstBank & Trust’s Star Spangled Evening Concert were cancelled again. This was the first year the show was rescheduled rather than canceled due to weather. “We had such great support that has allowed us to redo the whole thing,” Broadway Festivals Executive Director Colee Orf said. “We didn’t want to just cancel it.” However, the rescheduling did come with some costs, Orf

said. The fireworks that were supposed to be used for the original show on July 4 got flooded and ruined due to the storm. A fireworks show in Oklahoma also got rained out on July 4, Orf said, and they gave their usable fireworks to Broadway Festivals. “The new show was totally different than the one we have previously planned,” Orf said. “It was even bigger.” The show was originally designed to play to the music of the Lubbock Symphony. Once the show was rescheduled, this was changed so the show would be choreographed to the music on KLBB-FM 93.7. “We did not have time to update the new fireworks with our previously planned music,” Orf said. “But viewers were able to tune into the radio station to hear the music match up with the show.”

Once Sunday rolled around, so did more rain. The evening concert was canceled due to rain disabling all concert equipment, Orf said. As of now, there are no plans to reschedule the concert. “We planned on attending all of the festivities on Sunday because we had to miss everything on the 4th of July,” Lubbock resident Kristy Moore said. “We were upset that the concert was canceled but very grateful that we could see the firework show.” After two rain delays, the Broadway Festivals team was finally able to finish their 4th on Broad-way celebration. “There was just so much excitement behind our show that I honestly don’t know what we would have done if it got canceled again,” Orf said. “You never know with this wild West Texas weather.” @DailyToreador

CAMPUS

Band, orchestra camp brings young students to campus By MARYBETH HOLM Staff Writer

The Hemmle Recital Hall reverberates with the sound of “Maslanka’s Requiem,” a piece that seems to blend Ludwig von Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and the score from “Star Wars: A New Hope.” However, instead of a professional orchestra, Texas Tech Band and Orchestra Camp’s Wind Ensemble, the camp’s top ensemble, rehearses the piece

for Saturday’s performance for friends and family. The Wind Ensemble is comprised of about 40 middle school and high school students from across Texas who are a part of the School of Music’s Band and Orchestra Camp. The camp allows students to enhance their proficiency in their particular instrument and also exposes them to Texas Tech’s campus. Elisa Wiseman, a graduate of Texas Tech’s School of Music, acts as the student assistant in the

Band and Orchestra Camp’s office. Before she took on the position, she participated in the camp for three years when she was in high school. “The camp is why I came to Texas Tech,” Wiseman said. “This camp lets you meet all of the professors and get to know the campus. In general, it gives (students) that college atmosphere because a little more than half of them stay in the dorms all week and eat on campus as well.”
