ith the start of the 2018-19 men’s basketball season just a few months away, the schedule for Texas Tech’s men’s basketball team is starting to take shape, with several non-conference games announced for the Red Raiders. The highlight of the non-conference schedule so far is the game against Duke on Dec. 20, a perennial contender, as the two teams meet for the first time. Duke finished last season with a record of 29-8, making it as far as the Elite Eight before falling to Kansas. The game will take place at Madison Square Garden, where Tech faced Seton Hall last season. Duke has only missed the NCAA Tournament once dating back to the 1983-84 season, so the Blue Devils are expected to give the Red Raiders a true test prior to the start of Big 12 conference play. Freshman guard Zhaire Smith goes for a jumpshot during Texas Tech's game against Kansas on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, in the United Supermarkets Arena. Last season, the Red Raiders made it to the Elite Eight before being knocked out by Villanova. The upcoming season currently features six nonconference games, including matchups against Duke, USC, Memphis and Arkansas.

the upcoming season are both a part of the Hall of Fame Classic regional round that will take place in Tech’s own United Supermarkets Arena. Tech’s first game will be against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 9, followed by a game against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 13, according to Tech Athletics. Mississippi Valley State finished last season with a record of 4-28, while the Lions finished with a record of 22-12 in coach Jay Ladner’s first season, according to Basketball Reference. Following the two initial games in Lubbock, Tech will continue the Hall of Fame Classic with a game against USC in Kansas City on Nov. 19. The following day Tech will face either Missouri State or Nebraska, based on the result of both games. Tech will also face Memphis as part of its non-conference schedule on Dec. 1 for the Hoophall Invitational. Memphis finished last season with a record of 21-13 under the direction of former Red Raider coach Tubby Smith, who was fired by the

Tigers in March. Smith’s departure from Tech in 2016 led to the hiring of Tech coach Chris Beard, who in his second season took Tech to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. The final game that has been revealed is part of the annual Big 12/SEC Challenge, with Tech facing Arkansas on Jan. 26. Arkansas finished last year with a record of 23-12, falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Tech faced South Carolina in the Big 12/SEC Challenge last season, and the Red Raiders walked away with a 70-63 victory over the Gamecocks. Along with the seven games already scheduled, Tech will face each Big 12 opponent twice, bringing the total number of games determined to 25, with dates yet to be set for any conference games. Last season Tech played 31 regular season games, so five or six more opponents should be announced in the coming weeks. @AustinWattsDT
