FOUR TECH ATHLETES TRAVEL TO RIO FOR 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES Four Red Raider athletes are taking the world stage this August at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Janine Beckie, Bradley Adkins, Gil Roberts and Victoria Esson are all competing with their home countries and representing Texas Tech overseas.

Beckie and Esson are competing in soccer with the Canadian and New Zealand Women’s National Teams respectively, while Adkins and Roberts are both members of the U.S. track and field team.

Beckie finished her career as a Red Raider last season when the team won their first Big 12 Soccer Championship in program history and moved on to the second round of the NCAA tournament. At the end of the season, the forward became the first Red Raider to ever be named the Big 12 Offensive

Player of the Year in consecutive seasons according to the Tech Athletics website.

Beckie also holds three Tech soccer records, according to the website, for the all-time leader in goals, shot attempts, gamewinning goals and points.

She started playing for the Canadian National Team after her junior season, according to the website, and played with the Senior National Team that spring.

In Canada’s first game of the 2016 Olympics on Wednesday, Beckie recorded the fastest goal in Olympic history, according to the Rio 2016 website, when she scored in the first minute. The shot was the only goal during the first half, according to the Rio 2016 website, and Canada went on to win the match 2-0.

Esson graduated from Tech in 2014 and is a Christchurch, New Zealand native. The goalkeeper ended her career as a Red Raider leading the program in both shutouts and goals against average according to the Tech Athletics website.

She started playing for the New Zealand Football Ferns on the U17 National Team, according to the Tech Athletics website, and played in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for them. She also played in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup later that same year.

Two years later, Esson joined the Junior Football Ferns and played in the OFC U20 Women’s Championship.

She continued playing with the national team, according to the Tech Athletics website, but

this is her first Olympic appearance with New Zealand and the Football Ferns.

Another senior who just ended his Tech career, Adkins will be competing in the men’s high jump competition for the U.S. While a Red Raider, Adkins was named a USTFCCA AllAmerican seven times, the USTFCCA Regional Athlete of the Year and the 2016 Indoor Men’s Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year according to the Tech Athletics website.

During his senior season, Adkins matched a school record jump of 2.29 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 13, Adkins reached the 2.28 meters to achieve the Olympic standard.

cording to the U.S. Olympic Trials website.

Adkins will take the Olympic stage on Sunday, Aug. 14 in the qualifying round for the men’s high jump event.

Roberts is competing in the 400-meter dash with Team USA after finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

He still holds the indoor and outdoor school records for the 400-meter dash according to the Tech Athletics website.

In 2012 he competed in the USATF Championships and wont the 400-meter dash, according to the Tech Athletics website, and he was a member of the 4x400meter relay race at the World Indoor championship in 2012.

International Affairs speaks on Nagy appointment

fter the retirement of United States Ambassador to Nigeria James F. Entwistle was announced, the U.S. State Department was looking for someone to temporarily head the position — so they turned to Texas Tech.

for the Office of International Affairs and now Charge d’Affaires in Nigeria, will be temporarily serving as the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria for the month of August, according to a Tech news release. With more than 20 years of experience in African relations, Nagy was a good fit for this position.

universities (around the country) don’t have an ambassador being responsible for international programs or international affairs,” Sukant Misra, professor of cultural and applied economics and vice provost for international programs said. “I don’t know that there’s another university that has an ambassador heading their international programs.”

The reason this opportunity came about for Nagy was because of the retirement of the former ambassador, Entwistle, Misra said. In the interim period between the retirement and the state department appointing a new ambassador someone has to head that department.

It is usually around the summer time these appointments and retirements are announced too, Nagy said. Many times there is a scarcity when it comes to people who are available to fill the positions.

“So they really didn’t have an active duty senior person to go out there,” Nagy said.

“And at those times they get in touch with, you know, people who’ve retired.”

The appointment did catch Nagy off-guard, he said, but it was not a complete surprise as he had some diplomatic conversations with State Department people recently.

But besides working on diplomatic relations, Nagy said, this will also give him an opportunity to promote the international affairs department in an area they are all familiar with.

According to Misra, all parts of Africa serve the International Affairs office very well as they recruit a lot of international students from there. Nigeria specifically is the 15th largest nation that sends international students to the U.S., he said.

“So that’s a pretty good cross section of students coming to the U.S. and the number continues to increase, they’re sending more and more students to the U.S.,” Misra said. “So it’s a target country for us in terms of recruiting international students to come to Texas Tech University.”

Another reason there is a focus on Nigeria is because

the country has a lot of serious economic needs, he said, with food security being one of the main issues. There is also national interest in safety and security issues with the rise of the terrorist organization Boko Haram.

Even in the short time he is serving, Nagy said, he does plan to confront problems regarding Boko Haram and help Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari with antigovernment corruption efforts.

“And then because of Boko Haram and the horrible things they’ve done, there are one and a half million internally displaced people within Nigeria suffering horribly — no shelter, no food,” Nagy said. “The American people tend to be very generous when it comes to that kind of help.

It’s not what I call development assistance, which is very controversial, it’s plain humanitarian assistance.”

Speaking on behalf of the International Affairs office, Misra said Nagy is the pride of the university. In his past as ambassador of Ethiopia and Guinea there

is no doubt the State Department picked the right person to temporarily fill the position and he NAGY is able to connect the department with people around the world that they otherwise would not be able to reach, Misra said.

Because the appointment is only for the month of August, Nagy said he does not intend to overstay his welcome.

“I can be there only a couple of weeks, because then I’m going to Ethiopia. I’m taking a group of 12 U.S. universities to Ethiopia to a seminar that the U.S. embassy and the Ethiopian government are setting up to bring Ethiopian universities together with U.S. universities with the goal of establishing partnerships for international research grants, for student exchanges, faculty exchanges,” Nagy said. “I told the State Department my time there has to be limited.” @MichaelCantuDT

Tech Athletics announces 2016 Hall of Fame class The newest class for the Texas Tech Hall of Fame was announced by Tech Athletics on Thursday.

The class includes five former Red Raider studentathletes and a former football administrative assistant.

Josh Bard, Jia Perkins, Wes Welker, Ted Watts, Jonathan Johnson and Jennie Bailey are the members of the 2016 Hall of Fame Class.

Bard was a catcher for the Tech baseball team from 1997-1999, according to the Tech Athletics website, and was a member of the first baseball team to win a Big 12 regular-season title.

Bard holds the secondplace all-time ranking for hits, home runs, RBIs and total bases, according to the website, and is tied for the all-time lead in doubles.

Johnson ran the 800-meter race for Tech from 2002-2005 and was a nine-time All-American. In 2004, he became the first male to win a NCAA championship in school history according to the website.

In 2004, Johnson placed first at the U.S. Olympic Trials and went on to compete for Team USA at the Athens Olympics. He was the first Tech track and field athlete to compete on the Olympic stage.

Perkins was a guard for the Lady Raiders basketball team from 2000-2004. She was named the team’s most valuable player her freshman year, according to the website, and helped lead them to the Elite Eight during the 2002-2003 season.

A third-round WNBA pick in 2004, Perkins played with four teams during her 13year career.

In 1980, Watts earned AllAmerican honors, according to the website, making him the second defensive back in school history to earn the honor.

He played on the team from 1978-1980 and in 1981 was a first-round pick in the 1981 NFL Draft.

Welker was a wide receiver at Tech from 2000-2003 during the Air Raid era. While at Tech, Welker earned a spot among all-time leaders in both receptions and touchdown receptions according to the website. He is still the NCAA all-time leader in career punt return yards, according to the website, and is tied for the most punt returns for a touchdown in FBS history.

After a 12-year NFL career, Welker retired in 2015.

Bailey was not an athlete at Tech, but instead is being

honored for her 28-plus years of service for the football program according to the website.

She was known by the studentathletes as “Mrs. Bailey” and “Momma Bailey” and assisted in many of the recruiting aspects of the program.

Bailey died in June 2015 after a battle with cancer, according to the website, and Tech established the Jennie Bailey “Be Brave” Lifetime Scholarship Endowment in September 2015.

The inductees will enter the Hall of Fame on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Overton Hotel & Conference Center. They will also be honored at the home football game against Texas the next night. Olympics come at good time for U.S.

It is no secret that 2016 has not been the best year for the U.S. As a nation, we have been at each other’s throats on pretty much every issue to pop up on our social media feeds and scroll across the bottom of our TVs. But the Olympics are here and for the first time in recent months, people are no longer focused on pushing their ideals on the public. Americans are taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture rather than how much they disagree with the person sitting next to them.

assess IS fight WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama summoned top military and national security officials to the Pentagon on Thursday to assess what’s working and what’s not in the fight against the Islamic State group. High on the agenda: the nascent U.S. air campaign against IS targets in Libya.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden made the short trip across the Potomac River to sit down with Defense Secretary Ash Carter, CIA Director John Brennan and other Cabinet secretaries.

The president grinned and chatted with his aides but made no comments as journalists were allowed in briefly for the start of their meeting.

After the National Security Council session, Obama planned to take questions during a news conference at the Pentagon.

The session comes as the U.S. is bombing targets in and around the Libyan city of Sirte, a notable expansion of the U.S.-led coalition’s military mission against IS. At the urging of the Pentagon, Obama authorized the strikes that started this week and include precision strikes against IS tanks, rocket launchers and fighting positions.

Italy, just across the Mediterranean Sea from Libya, has said it’s prepared to allow the U.S. to use its bases or airspace to launch strikes against IS in Libya. The extremist group’s spread to Libya and elsewhere in North Africa has deeply alarmed European countries already worried about the specter of terrorism in European cities.

With racial and political tensions at an all-time high, it seems like every little thing, even something done with good intentions, is scrutinized until it is turned into another bad situation.

Tech alumnus on Olympics golf committee A 1968 Texas Tech graduate, Robert Condron, Rio 2016 venue press manager for golf, has gone from assistant sports information director to being a member of the United States Olympic Committee.

Condron, who retired from the committee in 2012, is assisting in the golf section of the Olympics, which is making its first appearance since 1912, according to his biography.

In the course of his career, Condron has served as the director of media relations and services for 15 Olympic Games, seven Pan American Games, 11 Olympic Festivals, World University Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and national and worldwide championships after joining the organization in 1984, according to his biography.

Condron also helped reintroduce wrestling into the Olympics, now called United World Wrestling.

Because Condron was in

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where the 2016 Olympics will take place this year, he was able to email The Daily Toreador answers to a few questions about the introduction of golf into the Olympics and his past work on various committees.

Here are some of his answers: Q: I read that you were to retire in 2012, what made you come back to helping the USOC this year?

A: “I’m actually not working for the USOC at these Olympics. I came back to help Rio2016, the organizing committee of the Games. I came back because golf is my passion. And the Olympics are my passion. This is number one on my bucket list. Helping golf come back to the Olympics after 112 years in an age where nobody you know was alive when golf hit its last shot.

The automobile was barely on the roads. World War I was a decade away. We were pretty much in the early stages of our country. What

That’s what the Olympics will do for your sport.”

Q: Has the threat of Zika made it difficult to plan out this year’s Olympics, at least on the golf level?

A: “Zika is just a part of what has made these Olympics difficult. I don’t know of a host committee who has had the problems that Rio has had since they got the nod from the (International Olympics Committee) to host these games. Zika is one. The economy is another.

Oil has gone bottom up and the economy has taken a huge hit probably suffered 30 percent of its value. The political world in Brazil has seen a president impeached.

And they have hosted the World Cup, soccer’s biggest event two year’s ago. The environmental problems are

insurmountable. To do what these people have done is a miracle. And I’ve been a part of it for a short while. They have overcome so much in the spotlight of the world.”

Q: I’d like to know your opinion on how the rest of the world is viewing the build up to this year’s Olympic Games. It seems there is a ton of bad press for Rio, why is that? Are there any more problems there that is different from some of the past Olympics you’ve worked in?

Could this possibly be due to the rise of social media?

A: “I think you are totally right in that social media magnifies everything — the problems, the successes. It is a huge magnifying glass to the world and probably not in the right proportion. It seems bigger than it is. It goes faster than the mind can work. It’s almost out to the world before it happens. Instantaneously.

it’s less than 12 seconds before someone is seeing a photo of the finish. Its faster than the mind can grasp.”

Q: In your career, I’m assuming, you’ve also seen the introduction of social media, new technology and diplomatic wounds heal. Has this affected the scope of the games?

A: “It puts more pressure on people and sometimes they act too quickly and without time to reflect. It causes people not to reason things out and to let mistakes enter into the picture because of this pressure.”

Q: If there is any other points that I did not bring up or subjects you would like to include feel free to bring them up also.

A: “Well, this is my 16th Olympic Games. I’ve seen things that are magic, that influence an entire generation of 10 year olds. I’ve seen what Mary Lou Retton can do, Michael Phelps, Lindsay Vonn, Shaun White. They change the world through what they do and how they act.

I hear that the Olympic Games are “too political,” spend too much money, don’t leave a legacy, are wasteful, etc, etc. That’s probably right in many aspects, but what it does makes the world a better place. It gives goals. It shows what dedication and preparation can do. Not only by athletes but by people who coach, who build, who plan seven years ahead and who have a goal of doing something that the world can be proud of.

I’m just glad to have been a part of it. From the time I was a student in an advertising class at Texas Tech to yesterday, my life has been rich. A lot of it was due to the people who taught me. A lot was because o the students I was with at the time.

And a lot has been because of the students, faculty and friends I have been involved with at Texas Tech in the past few years. This university has meant a lot to me and I hope I represented it well.”
