FOUR TECH ATHLETES TRAVEL TO RIO FOR 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES Four Red Raider athletes are taking the world stage this August at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Janine Beckie, Bradley Adkins, Gil Roberts and Victoria Esson are all competing with their home countries and representing Texas Tech overseas. Beckie and Esson are competing in soccer with the Canadian and New Zealand Women’s National Teams respectively, while Adkins and Roberts are both members of the U.S. track and field team. Beckie finished her career as a Red Raider last season when the team won their first Big 12 Soccer Championship in program history and moved on to the second round of the NCAA tournament. At the end of the season, the forward became the first Red Raider to ever be named the Big 12 Offensive

Player of the Year in consecutive seasons according to the Tech Athletics website. Beckie also holds three Tech soccer records, according to the website, for the all-time leader in goals, shot attempts, gamewinning goals and points. She started playing for the Canadian National Team after her junior season, according to the website, and played with the Senior National Team that spring. In Canada’s first game of the 2016 Olympics on Wednesday, Beckie recorded the fastest goal in Olympic history, according to the Rio 2016 website, when she scored in the first minute. The shot was the only goal during the first half, according to the Rio 2016 website, and Canada went on to win the match 2-0. Beckie and the Canadian National Team take on Zimbabwe

Saturday, Aug. 6 for the second game of group play. Esson graduated from Tech in 2014 and is a Christchurch, New Zealand native. The goalkeeper ended her career as a Red Raider leading the program in both shutouts and goals against average according to the Tech Athletics website. She started playing for the New Zealand Football Ferns on the U17 National Team, according to the Tech Athletics website, and played in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for them. She also played in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup later that same year. Two years later, Esson joined the Junior Football Ferns and played in the OFC U20 Women’s Championship. She continued playing with the national team, according to the Tech Athletics website, but

this is her first Olympic appearance with New Zealand and the Football Ferns. Another senior who just ended his Tech career, Adkins will be competing in the men’s high jump competition for the U.S. While a Red Raider, Adkins was named a USTFCCA AllAmerican seven times, the USTFCCA Regional Athlete of the Year and the 2016 Indoor Men’s Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year according to the Tech Athletics website. During his senior season, Adkins matched a school record jump of 2.29 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 13, Adkins reached the 2.28 meters to achieve the Olympic standard. At the U.S. Olympic Trials in July, Adkins placed third to earn a spot on the national team ac-

cording to the U.S. Olympic Trials website. Adkins will take the Olympic stage on Sunday, Aug. 14 in the qualifying round for the men’s high jump event. Roberts is competing in the 400-meter dash with Team USA after finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He still holds the indoor and outdoor school records for the 400-meter dash according to the Tech Athletics website. In 2012 he competed in the USATF Championships and wont the 400-meter dash, according to the Tech Athletics website, and he was a member of the 4x400meter relay race at the World Indoor championship in 2012.
