Lubbock County confirms third case of West Nile No new cases have been reported

Lubbock County confirmed a third case of West Nile virus Wednesday, but no new cases have been reported as of Thursday.

Beckie Brawley, public health coordinator for the City of Lubbock Health Department, said all three people are doing well and recovering.

The United States has reported a total of 1,590 cases reported in 48 states as of Tuesday, according to the Center for Disease Control.

This year, 70 percent of the West Nile cases have been reported in Louisiana, Mississippi, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas with almost half of the cases being reported in Texas.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services website, 894 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Texas, resulting in 34 deaths in 2012 as of Thursday.

Out of the 34 deaths, Andrews, Bell, Bexar, Collin, Concho, Ellis,

Gregg, Hood, McLennan, Montague, Panola, Travis, Wharton and Williamson counties have one death each. Denton and Harris counties each have two deaths, Tarrant County has four deaths and Dallas County has 12 deaths according to the Texas Department of State Health Services on Thursday.

By publication time Thursday, Dallas County reported a total of 258 cases. Tarrant County reported a total of 195 cases.

West Nile virus is a mosquitoborne disease that has two phases of illness: West Nile fever and West Nile neuro-invasive disease. Once the mosquito eggs mature, the mosquitoes feed on infected birds and then pass the disease on the humans and horses said Dr. Ronald D. Warner, associate professor in Family and Community Medicine.

Tech hosts Northwestern State to begin 2012 campaign

As kickoff closes in, the Red Raiders have been searching for ways to use a newly found weapon — depth — to their advantage.

Texas Tech has not only built up talent in its receiving and defensive cores, but also at the running back position.

Head coach Tommy Tuberville said he has his eyes on someone in particular when it comes to this position.

“I’m a SaDale Foster guy,” he said. “He kind of fits on what we do on offense. He’s a tough little guy that’s built like a fire plug.”

Attitude and determination are two characteristics that have changed from last season to this year, Tuberville said.

“I know our players are looking forward to the season,” he said. “It’s kind of another step in the process of trying to build on a football team that can compete for championships.”

If this team is to compete for championships, it will have to cut down on penalties, which plagued the 2011 season along with injuries.

said. “If they even look wrong, throw a flag. Last year we had some penalties that hurt us.”

In 2011 the Red Raiders led the Big 12 Conference in penalties and penalty yards per game.

“There is going to be a lot of

maturity on this team that will have to come around before we can say this is the greatest group of receivers,” Tuberville said. “But it’s got a very good opportunity to be one of the best I’ve been around.”

This season, fans will see a new rule change during football games.

Each team will now kickoff from the 35-yard line instead of the 30-yard line.

Tech partners with SUNY, others to send students abroad

Now, the agreement takes the summer program and advances it to a university-wide reciprocal program, which allows two to four students from each institution to register at their home institutions and attend the other institution.

“It’s a reciprocal program that is limited to a certain number of students,” Masselli said.

“Each university wants to make sure that it’s balanced so we have started it out as a small reciprocal program. The MOU allows for two students on each end to have the same process. To the extent that more students wish to participate, we still have the vehicle to make arrangements for this to occur because the relationship’s in place, but how we would go about facilitating registration may be a bit different.”

Masselli said he would like to see programs similar to Tech’s partnership with UNYP happen in other countries as well.

Smith said UNYP is part of the New York College Education Group, which offers accredited programs through the State University of New York system’s Empire State College.

“We’re in this moment at Tech where we’re changing the way we approach budgets and use funds,” McBee said. “He’s got the experience and has done a great job doing that in the College of Arts and Sciences over the past couple of years.”

He said Williams has good relationships with the chairs of the department and is reliable and dependable under all circumstances.

“I think it’s a good move for the college as a whole,” he said. “He’s an easy guy to work with. He’s got good experience and works well

with other administrators in different offices and with the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences.”

Williams said he is honored and pleased to take the position.

He said he has taught at the University of Sydney in Australia, Vanderbilt and Cleveland State University, until coming to Tech in 2006.

Williams said being the interim dean will be challenging, but he is ready to work with students, faculty and staff.

“In being in the finance office, I’ve dealt with money, so I know the department chairs, but I don’t know all of the faculty,” he said.

“I think in some ways just getting to know everyone is going to be a challenge.”

He said he plans to meet with each department within the college next week to introduce himself and get to know the faculty, graduate students and staff.

One of his goals as interim dean is to improve student advising within the college, Williams said.

“Part of what we’re going to do for that is have a complete renovation of the advising space,” he said.

Williams said he is honored to have the responsibility of interim dean.

When Smith went to Prague to sign the MOU, he said, he talked with UNY and SUNY systems about possibilities for enhanced exchanges across the European campuses like Athens, Prague, Czech Republic, Thessaloniki, Greece and Tirane, Albania with emerging campuses in Belgrade, Serbia and Tiblisi, Georgia and the Tech campus.

“The potential is that a TTU student some time in the future could conceivably go to Prague for two, three or four summers and possibly get dual credit within TTU and Empire State College to come away with two degrees,” Smith said. “And then if you earn another degree in a foreign capital, now you have that study abroad and cultural enrichment experience.”

Rawls College of Business Administration is not the only Tech department with Study Abroad programs at UNYP, Smith said. A group from the College of Architecture and a group from the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ theatre program were there this summer when he visited the site.

Smith said he would love to see Tech’s other programs get involved with

this program, but the college must be the one to show the interest in the program.

“What we try to do when we publicize these things is to pique other people’s interest and once they’ve expressed that interest then we can help to facilitate contacts that they would want to make,” Smith said.

UNYP has already taken advantage of the program sending Sofija Ftes, a third-year business major from Serbia, to study financial management, managerial economics, business law and introduction to production operations management at Tech.

Ftes said she has been in Lubbock since Aug. 19 and will stay for a semester, leaving Dec. 13.

“I have been living in Prague for two and a half years and I like it,” Ftes said. “I would recommend them to go and visit because Prague is a beautiful city and it is a really touristic place.

“The architecture is unique and is different from the rest of Europe. It also gives American students the ability to travel all around Europe. It will also give them a different insight to a different culture, different traditions, different nationalities. There are many students from different countries and it will also make you form friendships.” ➤➤egardner@dailytoreador.com

Texas surgeon charged in doctor’s murder LUBBOCK (AP) — A plastic surgeon was charged with capital murder Thursday after prosecutors said he hired a man to kill another doctor who was dating his ex-girlfriend and paid for the murder using silver bars.

Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon of Amarillo, along with the accused gunman, David Neal Shepard, were each indicted on capital murder charges in the July death of Dr. Joseph Sonnier III, who was found fatally shot and stabbed in his home.

Both men are each being held in lieu of a $10 million bond in the Lubbock County Jail.

An arrest warrant affidavit sug-

gests a love triangle involving Dixon, Sonnier and Dixon’s exgirlfriend, who was dating Sonnier.

Sonnier’s family members have said he had told them that his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend had been causing problems. The woman’s name isn’t included in court documents.

District Attorney Matt Powell said prosecutors haven’t decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Dixon’s two attorneys and Shepard’s public defender all declined comment Thursday. Court records describe Shepard as Dixon’s business associate but don’t provide details about how the men knew each other.

HSC hosts Little Black Dress event

In 2007, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center started the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health in the name of Laura W. Bush. The first signature fundraising event for LWBIWH, Lubbock’s Little Black Dress, was hosted

by HSC at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center.

The LWBIWH encompasses campuses in Dallas, Abilene, Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo and El Paso.

Even though this was the HSC Lubbock’s first Little Black Dress event, the Overton hosted a sold out crowd.

After nearly 20 years working at The Cooper Clinic in Dallas, a preventative medicine clinic, and serving on the search committee for his predecessor, Ted Mitchell has served as the president of HSC since June 2010.

“The chancellor contacted (George and Laura Bush) about setting up an institute in her name that would focus solely on education and research in gender medicine,” Mitchell said. “So, it’s not just about women’s health, it’s about understanding the difference in the way women react to certain types of chronic medical conditions versus men.”

LWBIWH is also about men’s health because the institution focuses on gender medicine. For example, Mitchell said, women can get heart disease, and men can get osteoporosis and neither may know they are at risk, both assuming it is a disease for the opposite sex.

“The whole institute is about community education, health care provider education and research in areas related to gender medicine,” Mitchell said.

During the last 100 years, women were often excluded from medical studies for various reasons. The LWBIWH addresses and funds the need for research in gender medicine, Mitchell said.

Federal court rejects new voter ID law AUSTIN (AP) — A tough Texas law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls discriminates against low-income blacks and Hispanics, a federal court ruled Thursday, wiping out for the November election a measure championed by conservatives and setting up a potential U.S. Supreme Court showdown.

In Washington, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the 2011 law imposes “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor” and noted that Texas’ racial minorities are more likely to live in poverty.

It was the state’s second major loss in court in three days, coming after a separate federal panel ruled Tuesday that Texas’ Republican-dominated Legislature failed to avoid “discriminatory purposes” when drawing new maps for congressional districts and both houses of the state Legislature to reflect Texas’ booming population.

“In a matter of two days, the state of Texas has had its dirty laundry aired out across the national stage,” said Democratic state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, chairman of the Mexican American Legislative Conference. “This deals with the despicable issues of discrimination, voter suppression, these are things that we’re not proud of.”

The voter ID decision could set a precedent for upcoming legal challenges to similar laws in other states.

South Carolina’s strict photo ID law is on trial this week in the same federal courthouse.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Dozens of Harvard University students are being investigated for cheating after school officials discovered they may have shared answers or plagiarized on a final exam.

Harvard officials declined to release the name of the class, the students’ names or the exact number being investigated, citing privacy laws.

The undergraduate class had a minimum of 250 students and possible cheating was discovered in roughly half the take-home exams, university officials said Thursday.

“These allegations, if proven, represent totally unacceptable behavior that betrays the trust upon which intellectual inquiry at Harvard depends,” President Drew Faust said.

Each student whose work is in question has been called to appear before a subcommittee of the Harvard College Administrative Board, which reviews issues of academic integrity, said Jay M. Harris, dean of undergraduate Education. He emphasized that none of the allegations has been proven and said there’s no evidence of widespread cheating at Harvard.

“The facts that are before us are that we have a problem in this one course,” Harris said. “I hope that doesn’t sound overly naive, I don’t want to be naive, but this is what we have. The rest would be speculation.

“Looking at the students we have and the work that they do, I would be loathe to say this is something that represents Harvard students generally.”

The spring course included undergraduates at all class levels, Harris said. A teaching assistant noticed some possible problems on the tests, including evidence that students collaborated on answers or used the same long, identical strings of words.

The exam had clear instructions that no collaboration was allowed, Harris said.

The assistant notified the professor, who referred the case in May to the administrative board. After interviewing some students, the board found what Harris characterized as “cause for concern.”

Depending on the offense, the punishments range from an admonition, a sort of warning for a first

offense, to being forced to withdraw from Harvard for a year. It wasn’t immediately clear what sanctions any student who has graduated may face.

There’s no timeline for when the investigation will be finished, Harris said.

“We believe in due process for students and fairness,” he said. “Everyone wants it done yesterday, but we have to be patient. It’s going to take as long as it takes.”

A Harvard spokesman said he knows of no incidents in recent memory of possible cheating at the university on this scale.

Michael Zimmet, a freshman from Aspen, Colo., said news of the investigation “was really surprising.”

“You think of Harvard as somewhere where people are academically honest and interested in their course work,” he said.

Tiffany Fonseca, a sophomore from Boston, said she didn’t know the details of what happened, but that it was easy to see how students could talk to each other about a take-home test.

“I’m kind of shocked, but I’m not,” she said.

At events similar to Lubbock’s Little Black Dress, HSC invites a successful woman in her field to give her perspective on life, women in the work place and women’s health. For Lubbock’s Little Black Dress, that was Karen Katz, president and CEO of luxury specialty retail department, Neiman Marcus.

Katz presented Neiman Marcus: Past, Present and Future to the sold out audience.

Katz’s presentation touched on the continuity of Neiman Marcus as a brand, company and the thread that has been strung through 105 years of business.

First time participants in Lubbock’s Little Black Dress event, Neiman Marcus became involved in the LWBIWH event through James Skinner, chief financial officer of The Neiman Marcus Group Inc. “I think that being a woman from Texas,” Katz said, “I’m a huge fan of Laura Bush and anything that she puts her name on usually means that it’s something that is worthy of getting involved in, and we also like to be involved in lots of different communities.”

Katz’s colleagues, Skinner and Dale Stapleton, senior vice president and chief accounting officer for the Neiman Marcus Group Inc., accompanied Katz.

Skinner graduated from Tech in 1974 with his bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Stapleton graduated from Tech with an accounting degree in 1979.

After Tech, both Skinner and Stapleton worked for Ernst and Young accounting firm, CompUSA and now Neiman Marcus. Skinner and Stapleton both agree the students at Tech have an attitude skewed for gratitude.

“In general, you got a personality of great gratitude for a job, ‘I’m going to work hard at it and I’m going to bust my tail,’” Skinner said. “It’s not about looking to get me but what I can give you.” ➤➤kkelly@dailytoreador.com

Paul Ryan just what the country needs W

hen the announcement came that Mitt Romney had chosen Wisconsin representative Paul Ryan to be his running mate, there was certainly an element of surprise to it. Ryan is considered by many to be a bold pick, especially in comparison to a safer pick such as former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty.

Personally, I think choosing Ryan was the best pick that Romney could have made. It may not necessarily give him the best chance of winning the election (although it won’t hurt him), but when you consider all of the factors, Ryan was definitely the best choice.

One of the most important factors a Romney running mate needs to have is the ability to energize the conservative base of the Republican Party that has been wary and distrustful of Romney. By picking the architect of the last two GOP budget proposals, Romney satisfies that need quite well.

Romney also needed to

Andrew Gleinser choose someone who could help make up for his lack of a “likeability” factor. Ryan, with his youthful energy, middle-class background and the fact that he has dealt with personal hardships during his life, does distinguish himself in that regard.

There are some other advantages to picking Ryan as well, including his Catholicism. This could help gain the support of the Catholic Church, especially considering the Church’s recent disagreements with President Obama’s policy on birth control.

But perhaps the biggest point of contention between Republicans and Democrats with regards to Ryan is one of the biggest reasons why he is the right choice.

With Ryan being the GOP’s

numbers guy, the discussion will most definitely be shifted back toward the economy.

No matter how many distractions the liberal media may throw our way (with one of the most recent being Chick-fil-A), the big issue really is the economy. Regardless of how much Obama tries to blame George W. Bush, the fact is that he has not done anything to improve the mess he campaigned tirelessly to fix.

In spite of Obama’s incredibly false belief that the economy is on the right track, most Americans would agree that our country has not recovered from the recession. Ryan understands this and has made it his priority.

The national deficit, now around $16 trillion, is on the way to becoming unsustainable.

After a campaigning Obama said adding to the deficit was “unAmerican,” he proceeded to add more in four years than Bush did in eight years.

Americans need someone who not only will make the

economy and the deficit his priorities, but who will also tell the truth about these issues and be honest with the public about what it’s going to take to fix these problems.

Take Ryan’s proposal for Medicare reform, for example.

Democrats claim that it’s the end of Medicare as we know it and that Ryan is trying to kill all of the seniors. Don’t believe it.

Ryan’s proposal would not end Medicare at all. It would simply create a system where the government gives eligible Medicare recipients the option to receive a voucher to use toward selecting private insurance coverage. If they don’t want the voucher, they can get the traditional Medicare coverage. Government spending per recipient would not change from the current projections and all those who are eligible for Medicare would be guaranteed coverage.

Those who are enrolled in Medicare prior to 2022 would not be affected, with the exception of being given an option

to switch to the voucher system. The eligibility age would increase by two months per year starting in 2022 until the minimum age reaches 67. That doesn’t sound so bad, does it?

Yet the Democrats talk about it like it’s the end of the world.

But where is their plan to reduce the deficit, other than taxing the rich into oblivion?

The fact of the matter is that if you’re going to get rid of this staggering debt, cuts have to be made across the board. Spending on Medicare, Medicaid, defense, foreign aid and welfare all need to be reduced. The tax code needs to be reformed to ensure greater revenue without raising taxes.

This is the message that the American people need to hear.

The standard political jargon is what got us into this mess.

It’s time for someone to stand up and level with the public, speaking honestly and frankly about what it’s going to take to fix these problems.

We can’t all be like the Dem-

ocrats, and a great deal of Republicans, running away from the problem and hoping it goes away. Ryan has shown the willingness and the ability to face these problems and develop real solutions.

The reason this might not be popular is because there are a great deal of people who don’t want to hear that someone wants to reform their particular government entitlement in order to save money. That message might not necessarily put Romney in the White House.

But seeing where the standard political message has taken us, I think Ryan’s ideas are refreshing.

It’s time for the American people to decide whether or not they want to work hard to fix this nation before we go past the point of no return and eventually into bankruptcy.

Twitter use requires thought, discretion Drilling efforts would

Have you noticed how news outlets now include tweets as part of the news? Many newscasts now talk about celebrity Twitter accounts and any tweet that is outrageous enough to comment on. It seems as if a person can’t get through a single news report on the TV or read an article in the paper without hearing about a recent tweet from “so-and-so.”

Honestly — who cares? Or better yet — why should I care?

Twitter, like Facebook is a great communication tool if used properly.

But when mishandled, things can go terribly wrong.

Some examples of out-of-line tweets can be seen with the recent London Olympics. With more than 150 million tweets about the Olympics posted during the 16 days of the London Games, Twitter was declared the winner in what some are calling the “Social Olympics.” There were about 80,000 Olympic tweets per minute published after Usain Bolt

won the gold medal in the 200-meter final, according to information given by Twitter in an article for the Australian paper The Age. The tweets started out with Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou, who tweeted a racist comment mocking African immigrants on her personal Twitter account. Papachristou was expelled from Greece’s Olympic team for saying: “With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will be eating food from their own home.”

Swiss soccer team player Michel Morganella was the second athlete after Papachristou to be kicked out of the 2012 Olympic Games after posting a racist and threatening tweet saying South Korea’s athletes were “retards” and should “burn themselves” shortly after Switzerland’s 2-1 loss to South Korea. When the French and text-speak tweet is translated into English, Morganella tweeted something along the lines of: “I want to beat up all South Koreans.

Bunch of mentally handicapped retards.”

Because of their need to blow off steam or show their racist colors to the rest of the world — it cost them big time. Plus — from now on, whenever their name is brought up they are forever tied to “that tweet” These types of postings have been happening on Twitter for quite some time and have been making headline news along with negatively affecting those who use the social media tool in the wrong way. Back in 2010, Aussie swimmer Stephanie Rice tweeted “suck that faggots” after Australia beat South Africa at rugby. In recent times, she has been under fire for posting a “racy” picture of herself wearing a two-piece swimsuit that left little to the imagination.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Twitter did not have as big of a role as it did in this year’s London Olympics. “There were more tweets in a single day than during the entire 2008 Beijing Games,” Twitter reps wrote in a blog post.

My favorite part about the aftermath of these rash and senseless tweets is the “I’m sorry” tweet

afterward. All three athletes above tweeted their apologies, with Rice even having a tearful news conference, apologizing to the public. Well, if you weren’t careless with your actions, you wouldn’t have anything to pretend to be sorry for. They are not sorry for what they said; they are sorry they got slammed for the tweet.

As always, the few ruin it for the rest of us, giving Twitter an image which teeter-totters back and forth between good and bad.

The solution to the trouble the Olympic athletes got themselves into is to be more discrete, and it applies to the rest of us, too. Take an extra two seconds of your time to think twice about your next post. And if you decide that your mother would be disappointed in you if she saw it, give her the benefit of common sense and don’t make the post.

Maybe the solution is as simple as a short quote from the TV show “The Office”: “Whenever I’m about to do something, I think, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ And if they would, I do not do that thing.”

Gov. Mitt Romney for his racially undertoned birther jokes and Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer said President Barack Obama has played the “race card” by touting the fact that he is the first black president, according to Politico, the debate that has quietly crept into the Republican National Convention (RNC) begs the question: Is there a place for race in politics?

In a postmodern world where all are on a level playing field, there is no need for race to be involved in politics.

But the fact remains that we are not in a postmodern world.

We are in a world where wounds of racial intolerance and bigotry are still displayed daily, and not all are on a level playing field — instead, systemic socioeconomic inequality prevails and remains an issue across the U.S. As recently as Wednesday, the news of boorish RNC attendees thrown out for throwing peanuts at a black CNN journalist and saying, “this is how we feed animals,” broke.

According to a report from the State of Black America, black Americans are still twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and six times more likely to be arrested than white Americans.

Clearly, ignoring race does not erase the deep roots of racism that remain woven into a society that prides itself on diversity and acceptance.

If race cannot be ignored in society, then perhaps it should stop being swept under political carpets.

But that does not mean that parties must parade their minority members to prove acceptance.

roots stem from minority communities, like Barack Obama, born to a white mother and Kenyan father, or Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, whose grandfather immigrated to the U.S. almost 100 years ago, bear the sole responsibility for drawing attention to issues of racial inequity.

Rather, while the race of political candidates may bear little significance to their political standpoints or qualifications, the fear of discussing race in politics needs to quickly dissolve for progress to be made in society.

Politicians should be spearheading the dialogue that will bring the U.S. to a society where race can be ignored.

An article released by the Associated Press last week reported that drivers have been paying record prices for gasoline.

The national average for Aug. 20 was $3.72 per gallon, up from $3.58 a gallon in 2011. Judging by these numbers, we can observe that the cost of gas has risen dramatically, leaving many students posing the question, “When, if ever, will prices begin to go down and stay down?” Before we can discuss how we lower costs, let’s look at what determines them.

A myriad of factors come into play influencing day-to-day fluctuations in gas prices, such as speculation, daily refinery output, geopolitical events, etc. However, the greatest factor that affects cost is supply and demand. If demand is greater than the amount of fuel being supplied, then naturally prices will increase. If supply is greater than demand, prices will decrease.

At this time, demand is greater than the supply. The U.S. is only one of many industrialized nations, much like China and India, that consumes large amounts of gasoline every day. We are competing in a globalized economy. In order to drive costs down we need to increase the supply.

While the U.S. is a major exporter of crude and refined oil, we are trying to help feed the voracious appetite of growing nations all over the globe. That being understood, we need to increase domestic drilling in areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the untouched oil sands in Utah and Alaska, develop new and more efficient ways of harvesting existing oil and gas reserves and continue the ongoing search for more untapped sources at home and abroad. An increase in production will help to meet existing demand. In addition, pursuing the above measures at home will produce an additional much-needed consequence: jobs!

With unemployment still hovering above 8 percent and underemployment above 17 percent, the American public needs a way to make a buck. reduce the number of Americans out of work. To see an example of this, we can look to North Dakota.

In 2008, an ongoing period of extraction from the Bakken oil shale formation began. Since then we have seen an economic explosion in North Dakota, giving it the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. The increased production has brought a huge influx of people searching for jobs. In fact, the Associated Press said the population of the city of Williston has doubled to 30,000 residents in less than a decade. The average salary of a resident of Williston has increased from $32,000 in 2006 to more than $70,000, and the unemployment rate is at 1 percent while, astonishingly, there are still 3,000 unfilled jobs in the city. The prosperity has been so widespread that a measure was placed on the ballot this past June that would have eliminated property taxes across the state.

Now, the mainstream media has been trying to point to the stresses the migration of workers has created such as: rent inflation, overcrowding, strains on infrastructure and the like. In response, I would like to say that this is just a round of problems that will attract entrepreneurs who will build more housing, more restaurants and more roads to meet the greater demand, therefore creating even more jobs. To most Americans just struggling to make ends meet, these sound like good problems to have.

Now, imagine economic transformation just like that on a national scale.

We could literally turn our economy around overnight achieving an unheard of level of prosperity for most Americans young and old alike. That, my friends, is real change we can believe in. The only question I have now is, why has our current president worked to stand in the way of so many opportunities like this? Why has he worked to limit our prosperity by encouraging more regulation, pushing for drilling restrictions and denying permits to build pipelines, i.e. the Keystone XL? Let’s tell him how we feel, UCF. We need real leadership for America. Vote for prosperity on November 6th. Vote Republican.

SGA, students, faculty address Tech rumors

Almost every university has its fair share of myths and rumors. Those associated with Texas Tech range from haunted buildings to getting a 4.0 GPA upon the death of your roommate and include everything in between.

Circulating Tech’s campus for years is a popular belief among Tech students that if a Citibus hits a student, on campus, the student receives free college tuition.

New to campus, Lubbock native freshman Hayden Thiel had previously heard all of the rumors attached to Tech from friends who had attended Tech, she said.

happened about it. I’ll just be like, ‘You know it’s a rumor that if you get hit by a bus you get free tuition but my friend actually did it and nothing happened, so I wouldn’t recommend it.’”

Tuition is driven by the state and a student’s current class enrollment, said Amy Murphy, associate dean of students and director.

“I think we’re obviously going to work with the student to make a lot of accommodations for them while they’re out and ill,” she said.

“But, I don’t think we can wave their tuition.”

Another popular Tech rumor is that if your roommate dies, you are given a 4.0 GPA. “In regards to if your roommate passes away, Texas Tech is very generous about it, but they aren’t

going to give you free As and you don’t have to go to class,” Alston said. “They offer you medical help, such as counseling and stuff like that, that’s honestly about it. You’re still required to go to class. Texas Tech is an institution; we don’t just give grades and expect you to pass. So, that is not true.”

A mystery yet to be confirmed or denied is the haunted buildings at Tech, some of which are now abandoned and some still have classes in them.

“Weeks Hall, that’s the one that actually a bunch of my friends have been in and broken in and walked through,” Williams said. “That’s the only one that I’ve heard of actually being haunted. As far as haunted goes, Weeks is it.”

Weeks Hall is prospectively being

renovated, but on the other hand, the same cannot be said about the Physics building.

Alston said Tech Activities Board brought a ghost detector to search the buildings his freshman year.

“In regards to haunted buildings, I honestly don’t know the truth,” he said. “There was a ghost detector that was brought to campus to search certain buildings and they didn’t find anything, but they swore they heard stuff.”

The rumors associated with Tech are what adds to the campus community and the character of being a Red Raider, Murphy said.

“A lot of these rumors, I mean, you basically said it, they’re just rumors,” Alston said.

Safe Ride offers rides to students anywhere Russia claims killer calls Pussy Riot freed

Texas Tech’s Students Government Association sponsors Safe Ride, a free service to Tech students with a valid student ID, implemented to ensure Tech students a safe ride home.

Safe Ride is provided through student transportation fees. It is a taxi service that will pick up and drop off students anywhere in Lubbock, excluding the airport.

“Safe Ride was a student government initiative to make sure that students have a safe ride home no matter where they might be,” SGA external vice president Reed Young said.

Although other universities may call it something different,

multiple campuses across the nation use taxi services for its students’ safety, Young said.

Safe Ride is available and free to Tech students. When students dial 742-RIDE, a taxi picks them up and takes them wherever they need to go. Students fill out a slip with their name, where they are coming from and going to, sign it and that is all, Young said.

“I used Safe Ride my freshman year in college,” junior Kalea Neff said. “I was at a party and no one else was ready to leave, so I called Safe Ride instead of driving myself.”

Regardless of what a student has been doing, where they have been or what hour of the night it is, Safe Ride is available, Young said.

“We just wanted to make sure

that our students have a safe ride home and that’s where that came from,” he said, “because we feel, as Student Government, we should do something to protect our students and make sure that at the end of the day, they have a safe way to get home.”

There are some negative speculations associated with Safe Ride, including if a student takes Safe Ride more than three times, you have to take Alcohol Anonymous classes, Young said.

“I have used Safe Ride at least three or four times, but we use different peoples IDs because, if not, you get in trouble,” Neff said.

“I’ve never gotten in trouble after taking Safe Ride, but I do know people who have. They got a ticket at Chitwood/Weymouth for

being intoxicated underage.”

Although there is a negative stigma paired with Safe Ride, it is a positive alternative to drunk driving, Neff said.

Kenneth Evans, assistant chief of Tech Police Department, said he thinks Safe Ride is good for the campus.

“I think that SGA is being proactive through Safe Ride,” Evans said. “The campus is safer to students, faculty and staff. I think it’s a good idea. It gives our students an option.”

About 200 to 350 students use Safe Ride each month.

The number is higher in the fall, which may be because of the need for a ride during Tech football games, Young said. ➤➤kkelly@dailytoreador.com

Berry Gordy, Paul McCartney to play Motown piano DETROIT (AP) — In town for a concert last summer, Paul McCartney made his first-ever visit to Detroit’s Motown Museum, the legendary two-story “Hitsville USA” building where a generation’s worth of musical gems were created.

McCartney, a contemporary of Motown stars such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, “was just thrilled to be in the space,” said Lina Stephens, the museum’s curator, who gave McCartney and his bandmates a guided tour that day.

McCartney was also excited to come across a pair of pianos.

“He came to the first piano — even though there’s a sign on it that says, ‘Please do not touch’ — he went up and played the piano,” Stephens said. “He said, ‘I’m sorry I have to,’ and he played.”

When the group arrived at Studio A — the famed Motown recording studio — McCartney found piano No. 3. This one, though, had a cover over the keys.

He was told it couldn’t be played due to deterioration, and McCartney moved on.

The next day, he called with an offer to have the damaged 1877 Steinway grand fully restored.

More than a year later, that process has been completed.

The restored 9-foot Victorian rosewood will have its coming-out party at a Sept. 18 charity event in New York City before returning to its home on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

McCartney and Motown

founder Berry Gordy will play the piano at the New York event, dubbed “Project: Harmony,” said Motown Museum Board of Trustees Chairwoman Robin Terry, Gordy’s grandniece. The event will benefit the Motown Museum.

“We’ll unveil the piano and then the two of them will play the piano, and we’ll have some fun and leave it to them to make of that what they will,” Terry said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.

The piano will eventually go back on display at Studio A, where it has been housed since the museum’s opening in 1985.

Terry said the piano made its way to Motown when the studio acquired Golden World Records in 1967, a facility that was redubbed Motown Studio B and used by musicians and songwriters to create music by Wonder, Gaye and other Motown greats.

The piano was restored by Steinway & Sons to professional recording quality, Terry said, with all of its internal components — soundboard, keys, hammers, pins and strings — restored. The piano’s case was left as is to preserve its authenticity, while the legs, which were not original, were replaced.

While the original strings and hammers were worn beyond repair, they were retained and will be returned to the museum for exhibit.

McCartney’s publicist didn’t return a message from the AP seeking comment, but Terry said: “Paul McCartney, he orchestrated

the process, moving the piano, getting it to Steinway. ... It wasn’t just a monetary thing. His soul was in it. He wanted to make sure that this contribution was made, and he followed it through from beginning to end.”

While they didn’t cross paths all that often during their respective heydays, The Beatles and Motown artists were members of a mutual admiration society.

Beatles manager Brian Epstein did promote Motown revues in the United Kingdom, which were popular with fans and stars alike.

And Four Tops singer Abdul “Duke” Fakir recalls being at a party with The Beatles, where the Fab Four peppered his group with

questions about how they sang their harmonies and achieved other elements of their sound.

According to Stephens, McCartney “was pretty tickled” during his tour to find a photo of himself and Beatles bandmates Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon alongside Gordy’s father and Gordy’s three children.

McCartney “talked about the fact that he had always heard about and been conscious of Motown and getting his hands on those first Motown recordings and things,” Stephens said. “It was kind of completing a circle for him in a lot of respects.”

MOSCOW (AP) — The bodies of an elderly woman and her daughter were found in Russia beneath a scrawled message demanding freedom for the jailed members of the Pussy Riot band, officials said Thursday.

While a Russian investigator cautioned that the killer was possibly trying to mislead police by drawing attention to the punk provocateurs, the alleged link between a killer and anti-Putin protesters was immediately seized upon by Russian media and pro-Kremlin publicists.

Three members of the band were sentenced this month to two years in prison for a February “punk prayer” performance in Moscow’s main cathedral entreating the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, who at the time was on the verge of winning a new term as Russian president.

An official of the Russian Orthodox Church on Thursday said supporters of the band bear a moral responsibility for the gruesome killings in the city of Kazan.

“This blood is on the conscience of the so-called public, which supported the participants in the action in Christ the Savior Cathedral, because the result is that people with unstable mentality got carteblanche,” said Archpriest Dmitry Smirnov, the church’s envoy to law enforcement agencies, the Interfax news agency reported.

Some publications ran headlines claiming that Pussy Riot supporters “committed” or “inspired” a double homicide. The coverage was full of

the mostly negative terms used by Kremlin-friendly television networks and media in their coverage of the protesters’ trial.

The trial, widely seen as Kremlinorchestrated, caused an international furor, with celebrities such as Paul McCartney urging Russian authorities to free the band.

The jailed band members’ attorney said on Twitter that “what happened in Kazan is horrible,” calling the case “either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic” case.

“I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot’s band name,” Nikolai Polozov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said the women were mother and daughter, aged 76 and 38, and were killed late last week in their apartment in Kazan with the words “Free Pussy Riot” written on the wall in English, “presumably” with blood.

The substance has not yet been confirmed, it said in the statement.

The agency did not provide the women’s names or reveal details about their occupations or whether they had any connection to the band.

The Russian tabloid Lifenews quoted an unnamed investigator as saying their faces and bodies were disfigured by multiple stab wounds.

An investigator in Kazan said the murderer was either psychotic or a drug addict who was trying to cover up the crime by attributing it to the band’s supporters. The killer “was trying to avoid suspicion” by misleading police, investigator Andrey Sheptitsky said in televised remarks.

Tech soccer looking to stay undefeated

After winning both games at the TCU Invitational last weekend in Fort Worth, the Texas Tech soccer team (4-0-0) looks to keep its perfect record intact this weekend against Nevada and Ole Miss.

The Red Raiders are off to their best start since 2010 when they began the season with five consecutive wins.

Tech has outscored its opponents 9-1 so far this season and outshot them 64-34. The team is tied for the Big 12 Conference lead in goals scored and also leads the conference in assists and goals per game. Junior forward Jessica Fuston leads the team and conference with four goals, including a hat trick in last Sunday’s match against Montana which led to her be named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

“There’s a lot of good forwards in this league but as forwards have graduated from other places and Jessica has matured, I think she’s risen to a place where she’s one of the best forwards in the Big 12,” Tech coach Tom Stone said. “She’s so comfortable in front of goal. Most American forwards need six or seven chances to get a goal and she really needs two to four, and that’s a great ratio for us to have on our team. “

Along with Fuston, the Red Raiders have also benefited from the quick start to freshman forward Janine Beckie’s career. She scored her second goal of the season in the Aug. 23 match against Stephen F. Austin to put home the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.

Despite the team’s offensive success and the contributions from the starting forwards, Stone said, he wants to see more goals from the midfielders.

Fuston and Beckie have combined to score six of the team’s nine goals.

“We need our attacking mids to get involved in the act,” he said. “We need our holding mids to score on set pieces. If you’re limited to two (players) then those two could have a rough day and then where do you go? We’re looking for more to step forward.”

The Red Raiders will need those contributions against Nevada (1-2-1) when they take on the Wolfpack at 7 p.m. Friday night at John B. Walker Soccer Complex. Nevada is led by sophomore midfielder Chrisalyn Fonte who has three goals this season.

Stone said Nevada is an athletic team, which plays a physical style of soccer with a lot of fouls. This season the Wolfpack have out fouled their opponents 42-27.

Fuston said she believes the home crowd will help push the team to vic-

tory. Tech currently has a streak of six straight Friday night matches at home with a crowd of more than 1,000.

“Nevada is going to be a good team,” she said. “We have just got to play our game and keep it calm. We’ve got to use the atmosphere to help us get the win.”

After Friday’s match, Tech will travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on Ole Miss on Sunday. The match begins a five game, three week home stand for the Red Raiders, who will not play again in Lubbock until Sept. 23.

The undefeated Rebels, (4-0-0) outscored their opponents 12-2 in their first four games, and outshot opponents 85-31. The offense is led by juniors Rafaelle Souza and Mandy McCalla who have combined for seven goals. Sophomore Kelly McCormick, who earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting backto-back shutouts, anchors the defense.

Though Ole Miss presents a tough test, Stone said, if the team continues to improve in practice the results will take care of themselves.

The Rawls Course hosted a ribbon cutting Thursday morning to celebrate the opening of the Cash Family Team Facility and a new clubhouse that construction projects estimated to cost the university $3.7 million.

The clubhouse spans more than 6,700 square feet, and was built to serve both the Texas Tech golf team as well as the Lubbock community, vice chancellor Robert Molina said.

The team facility covers 4,174 square feet of ground and, along with the clubhouse, took about a year to construct.

“It’s amazing to be standing in this classic-style clubhouse which reflects the architectural language of our campus when just 12 months ago we stood on scrub grass right here,” Molina said.

Rawls Course cuts ribbon to open new clubhouse facility

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Backup quarterback Graham Harrell finally came through with the strong preseason performance the Green Bay Packers were looking for, driving the offense for touchdowns on all three of his possessions in a 24-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Harrell completed 13 of 15 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns in both teams’ final tuneup Thursday night.

Second-year running back Alex Green had touchdowns rushing and receiving, and Jarrett Boykin caught a touchdown for the Packers.

Peyton Hillis had 46 yards on six carries early on and the Chiefs rushed for 247 yards.

Defensive tackle B.J. Raji appeared to hurt his left ankle on the Packers’ first defensive play, but was able to walk off the field without assistance.

Raji did not return to the game, although it was not clear whether his absence was precautionary.

After halftime, Harrell put together another steady drive, hitting Boykin for 21 yards and Brandon Bostick for 14 yards before finding Boykin again for a 12-yard touchdown.

Harrell, a former standout at Texas Tech, came into camp as the Packers’ main backup after Matt Flynn signed a free agent deal with Seattle. Flynn subsequently was beaten out by rookie Russell Wilson — and Harrell struggled in his previous preseason appearances with the Packers.

Coming into Thursday, Harrell had completed 50.8 percent of his passes with a touchdown and two interceptions. However, Harrell has been playing with a secondstring offense that has struggled to give him any help, especially in pass protection. He was sacked five times in the first three games.

Tuberville said he believes the reason behind the rule change is correlated with the topic of concussions.

“Our kicker is going to kick it 50 percent of the time out of the end zone, as most kickers are,” he said. “There are some huge hits now on kickoff and I think that’s the main reason they did that.”

One person excited about the new rule change is quarterback Seth Doege.

Doege said he hopes the rule change allows the offense to get out of the gates quicker.

“That was one of our main issues all of last year,” he said.

“We kind of started off slow.

One thing I’d like to see, and I think I can speak on behalf of the offense, we’d want to start fast.”

The rule change also has negative implications for the Tech defense since the field is now shorter for opposing offenses.

A new rule might put the defense in a bad position, but they should be able to make

adjustments, Doege said.

“I think they’re a lot better,” Doege said. “They’ll surprise some people on Saturday how much they have improved.”

After finishing dead last in the nation in rushing defense last season, Tech’s defense has nowhere to go but up.

The Red Raiders remain o p t i m i s t i c h o w e v e r, w i t h new defensive coordinator Art Kaufman, along with the new 4-3 scheme he has implemented.

Safety D.J. Johnson said his eyes are set on a prize that has craftily eluded the Red Raiders since 1994.

“Big 12 Champions. It’s something that we haven’t accomplished here at Tech,” he said. “We want to take it, without a doubt. We want everybody to know that we took it and we earned it.”

The Red Raiders must get through their non-conference schedule, beginning this weekend with Northwestern State before they can set their eyes on conference foes.

Lattimore ran for two touchdowns and 110 yards in his first game back after tearing his left ACL, and Shaw ran for 92 yards while playing the second half with an injured shoulder as No. 9 South Carolina rallied for a 17-13 victory against Vanderbilt on Thursday night.

Shaw was hurt at the end of a 2-yard run down to the Vanderbilt 46 late in the first half. He went to the sideline before going to the locker room where he was examined. Dylan Thompson finished the half and oversaw two three-and-outs to start the second half before Shaw ran back to the Gamecocks’ sideline.

The junior quarterback, who’s now 9-1 as a starter, came back into the game with 6:02 left in the third quarter. He went three-and-out himself before putting together the game-winning drive.

The big play was a 20-yard pass to Justice Cunningham. Officials flagged Vanderbilt cornerback Andre Hal for hitting a defenseless receiver above the shoulder, knocking the receiver’s helmet off.
