TECH HOSTS STEPHEN F. AUSTIN TO BEGIN 92ND SEASON

he 2016 NCAA football season began last Thursday when former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb took the snaps for his new team, the Cal Bears, against Hawaii in the Sydney Cup in Sydney.

Now, the rest of the FBS will begin Thursday and throughout the weekend.

In Lubbock, the Red Raiders will kick off their 92nd season at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury released the depth chart for the upcoming game against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Monday at the weekly Big 12 Conference coaches news conference.

Junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II will be taking the snaps for the Red Raiders come Saturday.

He will be backed by redshirt sophomore Nic Shimonek.

Other keynotes for the game’s lineup include freshman offensive lineman Terence Steele, who is listed as the starting right tackle.

Jordyn Brooks, freshman linebacker, is another new face on

the team.

Brooks is listed as the middle linebacker and will be alongside sophomore D’Vonta Hinton and senior Malik Jenkins.

The linebackers had to refamiliarize themselves with their positions when former Red Raider Dakota Allen was dismissed before the spring semester for burglary charges.

Other positions will see familiar faces in the game, such as sophomore defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko and sophomore safety Jah’Shawn Johnson.

On the offensive side of the ball, offensive guard Baylen Brown and receiver Devin Lauderdale will make the start for Tech in their respective positions.

The Red Raiders will embark on their journey through 2016 with the longest active home opening winning streak, according to Tech Athletics.

Tech has not dropped a season opener in Lubbock since 1992 when then-ranked No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners paid the Red Raiders a visit.

Fehoko continues family line at Tech

student, who is passionate about family and has a personality that does not reflect the stadium lights or the intensity of the crowd on Saturday’s game.

“I’m a person that loves hanging out with family,” Fehoko said. “At times I like to keep to myself, but if the crowd is going in a good way, everybody’s having fun, then I kind of like to tag along.”

Fehoko said he likes to surf, hike and fish. However, there is an outdoor activity he has yet to try and is looking forward to trying it out.

“I haven’t been hunting yet, that’s one thing I’ve got to do,” he said.

Family is important to Fehoko. However, growing up with older brothers was not easy, Fehoko said, but it was fun.

It might have been hectic at times in the Fehoko household, he said, but there was never a dull moment.

“I have a really big family,” Fehoko said, “When you’re growing up with all brothers it turned into a mad house, at times. My mom loves it. That’s the crazy thing. She loves having all boys.”

Fehoko is the youngest of the three brothers in his family. Being the youngest comes with all of the joys of having older siblings.

“I got all of the lasts, all of the hand-me-downs,” Fehoko said. “I got all the whoopings, scratches, all of the wrestling.”

As a teenager, Fehoko spent his time soaking up the sun 3,500 miles from Lubbock in Honolulu.

It was not until he moved to Lubbock, he said, that he realized how different the two are.

“I went to high school in a city called Kalihi town, 10 minutes outside of the capital,” Fehoko said. “See it’s different, you come from Hawaii to Lubbock, and you’re used to eating Hawaiian food — you’re eating white rice, pig, a lot of beef, cattle. Then you come here, and it’s like mashed

Fehoko did not start playing football until high school and was greatly influenced by his family.

They expressed a love for the game and Fehoko said he found football interesting.

“One reason I play football is because my dad played football,” Fehoko said. “Growing up as a kid, I always would see my brothers playing football. I was always too young to play football. So, I’d always be on the sideline tossing a football to myself, cheering them on.”

Tech is a far stretch from Honolulu. However, the fact that two of Fehoko’s older brothers played at Tech might have swayed him toward Tech, as well, he said. One of his brothers still works at Tech as a defensive graduate assistant.

Fehoko chuckled when asked “Why Tech?”

“Why not? It’s such a great place,” he said. “A good college town. I love the atmosphere here.

I love the academics at Tech, the teachers really help out a lot.

Especially with student athletes,

they take care of us.”

While football is a priority in Fehoko’s life, he said so is academics. He considers his studies a big responsibility and does not take lightly.

“Right now, I switched from (personal financial planning) to addicted drug researching studies,” Fehoko said. “I’m taking a light load ... during the season. In the spring I might take 19. The good thing is, we get tutoring, we get help.

There’s no excuse for us to fail.”

Fehoko said his teammates are his family away from home and enjoys spending time with them.

“I’m kind of friends with everybody,” Fehoko said.

“One day I’ll hang out with the defensive line. One day I’ll hang out with linebackers, defensive backs. I think that’s the good thing about Tech, everybody’s so close with each other.”

Junior defensive lineman Talor Nunez said he is ready to hit the field and play next to Fehoko.

Nunez said he has seen the defensive line improve since the beginning of spring camp.

“Breiden (Fehoko) is a leader,” Nunez said. “We are all prepared for the upcoming season, and he is a big part in that.”

Defensive line coach Kevin Patrick said he is looking forward to working with Fehoko and the line during the season.

Fehoko is the only set starter in the lineup so far, Patrick said.

“We’ll be rotating guys in and out throughout the games,” Patrick said, “but Breiden (Fehoko) is ready to play as much as we need him, and he’s excited to do that for us.”

Fehoko said he takes pride in his team and is excited to finally get the season started.

“I love it. Just waiting for the season to start,” Fehoko said. “Come Saturday, I think everybody’s been waiting to play Stephen F. Austin, first game on the calendar, everybody’s getting ready to get the jitters out of their system.” @TheDT_Sports

Top 5 football players to watch this season

1. Patrick Mahomes II Junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II is the starting quarterback for Texas Tech this season. In his previous years, he has excelled on the field both in passing and running making him a threat to all opposing defenses.

In 2014, he passed for over 598 against Baylor and in the same game passed for six touchdowns.

Along with this, he has also received eight preseason recognitions.

Along with his passing, Mahomes also rushed for a career high of 73 yards against West Virginia last year. In the same season, Mahomes passed for 4,653 passing yards and 36 touchdowns with a 63.5 completion percentage.

In short term, Mahomes can definitely pass the ball. In rushing, Mahomes rushed for 456 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, according to ESPN. Mahomes can both run and pass which is a huge

key in terms of facing opponent defenses. If passing doesn’t work, he can run.

If running doesn’t work, he can pass. This will prove difficult for opposing defenses to constantly adjust to. Mahomes is definitely a player to watch this season as he’ll look to continue making huge gains in his college career.

2. Justin Stockton Since DeAndre Washington graduated and is now playing for the Oakland Raiders, Justin Stockton is now the starter for Tech.

Last year, Stockton ran for 367 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 61 carries. Stockton also had 341 receiving yards for 22 receptions, according to ESPN. Stockton also had six receiving touchdowns. These sta-

tistics are important because not only can a running back run but they also should be able to catch and run.

Since he is now the starting running back alongside DeMarcus Felton, Stockton will see more carries, and more reps. Clean up “Fight Song”

T

e x a s Te c h i s known for its traditions. From the Masked Rider to wrapping Will Rogers, certain things just bring out our Red Raider spirit. However, Tech students are known for creating their own, some of which are great while others are just plain awful.

If the “Fight Song” is sacred, why is it treated so poorly? It was written for Tech fans to come together and show their school spirit, not for students to screw with. People associate the “Fight Song” with Tech, and when people change the original words to something vulgar, it makes the university look bad as a whole.

I hate nothing more than sitting in the stands at an athletic event and hearing people cuss every time the Goin’ Band plays our fight song. It is disrespectful more than anything else.

Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against vulgar language. However, there is a time and place for it, and at a football game, surrounded by thousands of fans and small children is definitely not the place.

Students are not the only problem. Fans of all ages have lost all respect for the “Fight Song” and are setting a bad example for younger Red Raiders. Incoming Tech students and fans hearing the “Fight Song” sung in vain at such a public venue makes them think it is cool if they do it too, but it’s not.

It’s not, at all.

Think of all the Red Raiders who walked around campus before we did. All of the people who stood in the same stands and sang the same song. They were able to do it with respect for their school. So, why can’t current students?

The “Fight Song” is my fight song, but it’s also our fight song. We don’t do it any justice if we change the words just to bash on the other team. It really does make us look like a bunch of drunk college kids who don’t respect anything.

Tech is a Tier One university that contributes great

things to the country and the world. However, in the state of Texas, we are seen as trashy because we can’t sing the freaking fight song without cussing all the way through it.

I know Tech isn’t the only school that does this, but it tries a lot less than other Big 12 schools to hide it. It seems as though our students are proud to disrespect our school and its traditions. I honestly don’t get it. How can you trash something that has meant so much to so many people?

I’m proud to go to Tech.

I’m proud to be a Red Raider.

That means I love all the traditions that come with being a student here, and I absolutely hate how students cuss during our “Fight Song.”

At Tech, we take pride in our school. We bleed scarlet and black and throw our Guns Up wherever we go, but, somehow, we decided it was okay to disrespect one of the most sacred things at our school. So, until we stop cussing during our fight song, the world is going to think we are nothing more than trashy college students. mmorris@dailytoreador.com

5. Jordyn Brooks One of the new young linebackers this season is freshman Jordyn Brooks from Stratford High School in Houston. He finished his senior year with 63 total tackles. He was ranked 57th top linebacker in the nation and ninth in Texas by www.scout.com, according to the Tech Athletics website.

It will be interesting to see how well Brooks fits in with the Tech defense.

He can definitely tackle

4. Jah’Shawn Johnson In his college career, sophomore Jah’Shawn

Kliff Kingsbury, he will most likely become a huge asset to the linebacker position and will make some great plays come game time.

Push to eat healthy now extreme

E

xodus 3:8 reads, “I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” We’re talking about soy milk, right?

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that everyone is a self-proclaimed health guru. You know exactly what I’m talking about.

Facebook is cluttered with Buzzfeed’s ever so popular “Tasty” videos; quick, at-home workout videos; and — my personal favorite — that one friend everyone has who considers himself the new Dr. Oz after a week of meal-prepping and exercising.

It seems healthy living has become the guiding light of how we live our day-to-day lives. From ridiculously little watches — with even more ridiculously little screens — that ding when it’s time to exercise to the rise of casual workout wear, health consciousness is more than just a fad. It determines what we wear, eat and, ultimately, how we view ourselves and others.

The cultural dietary obsession is pursued and idealized almost religiously.

There’s a reason people say, “I am vegan,” instead of, “I eat vegan.” They identify with the values that coincide with the term.

I can’t help but wonder if this health food craze, in a way, is a search for something more meaningful in life. Perhaps people are quelling their longing for something greater with an alternative sort of faith.

We all need to believe in something, right? Well, for many, God has become too controversial of an answer to accept. We all need some sort of value system and moral code to bring structure to our lives.

So, health-obsessed diets make their way not only into the fridge, but also into the lives and hearts of millions. Many have started using terms such as organic, grass-fed and cage-free as a road map to clear the jelly-filled, sinladen pathway to salvation.

There’s also a flip side to this mindset. In the same way that health food has become symbolic of purity, fatty foods — and those who eat it — fall on the opposite side of this equation.

Political correctness and religious tolerance are all the rage these days. So, what about food tolerance?

Yes, I know how McNuggets are made, and no, I would not like to hear about it for the millionth time.

I would like to live my days in peace without being judged for the impending doom I am promising my coronary artery. I may not be the living embodiment of health, but I take care of my body. Just because I didn’t take a picture of my salad doesn’t mean I didn’t eat it.

The field at Jones AT&T Stadium flooded following heavy rain around Lubbock on Wednesday afternoon. Roads around town and on campus were under water after several hours of constant rainfall many cars were stalled around town. Robert Giovannetti, senior associate athletic director for external operations, said Texas Tech’s Saturday home football opener will be played as scheduled.

Giovannetti discusses new additions to game environment On Wednesday, Robert Giovannetti, senior associate athletic director for external operations, discussed several topics revolving around Saturday’s game against Stephen F. Austin.

Giovannetti said there will be more graphics shown throughout the game on the big screen. A replay addition will be added, so that fans can see exactly what goes on when an official overlooks a play. Fans will also be able to see what the official is looking at and what goes on during the process.

“We’ve got a big TV up there, let’s use it,” Giovannetti said. “Let’s put some graphics

up there, so people always know what’s going on.”

Season ticket sales have risen to the second highest in program history at $35,000. Giovannetti said he hopes the number rises to around $55,000 for this weekend’s game.

The north end zone has been under renovations that include new premium seating for fans.

They will have access to televisions for watching the game with access to the club behind the seats. By the second game of the season, there will be a bridge connected to the club area, so that fans have easier access to and

from the club.

“It’s going to be done by kickoff,” he said. “When you come here Saturday at 7 p.m., that will be finished and ready to go. For the fans who bought tickets there, it’ll be ready and operational for them on Saturday.”

There will still be construction going on through this Saturday. However, Giovannetti said there will not be any issues concerning the construction. The traffic should not be a problem and staff members will be able to guide people.

A new program called Texas Tech Pass is also going to be a new feature that allows fans to buy mobile tickets.

This new program will allow fans to upgrade their seat if they see an opening or buy a quick ticket if they were unable to earlier.

Texas Tech Pass will carry on to all sports, not just football. The program will provide a faster and more efficient way for fans to get tickets.

Overflow students will be allowed to sit behind the end zone by the new premium seats if necessary in certain games.

However, Giovannetti said he does not anticipate that to happen this upcoming weekend.

Rangers get minor league catcher Ashley from Mets for cash A R L I N G T O N , Te x a s (AP) — The Texas Rangers have acquired minor league catcher Nevin Ashley from the New York Mets for cash considerations.

Ashley was assigned

to Triple-A Round Rock after the deal announced We d n e s d a y n i g h t . T h e Rangers did not put the 32-year-old Ashley on the 40-man roster.

A sixth-round pick in

2006 by Tampa Bay, Ashley has spent time with five organizations. He saw his only major league action with Milwaukee last year, going 2 for 20 in 12 games.

Ashley spent the 2016

season with Triple-A Las Vegas, batting .240 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 63 games. He has also had stints in the Cincinnati and Pittsburgh organizations.

Running backs focus on upcoming season

Last season, Texas Tech rushed for a total of 2,487 yards. The highest number of rushing yards came from DeAndre Washington, who graduated from Tech last year, and is now an Oakland Raider in the NFL. This year, junior Justin Stockton, sophomore DeMarcus Felton, senior Quinton White Jr., redshirt freshman Corey Dauphine, freshman Da’Leon Ward and junior Caleb Woodward are looking to carry the ball for the Red Raiders.

Stockton rushed for 367 yards and five touchdowns and had 61 carries last year.

He also had a career high in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and total touchdowns, all against Kansas State. He recorded touchdowns in eight of his 13 games, according to the Tech Athletics website.

“It’s been super competitive, and it has to be to make everybody better,” Stockton said. “Coaches see the competition and they love it, and they just keep the rotation going.”

Felton, who might see the field more this season, rushed for 73 yards and one touchdown in six carries. Last season, he primarily played on special teams, according to the website.

His first touchdown came by way of a 53-yard run against Iowa State.

“We’re competing every

day, but we’re family in there first,” Felton said. “If anything, we’re going to help each other out, but we always know that we’re all competing for that starting job.”

Freshman year, Stockton and Felton roomed together, Felton said, that allowed them to learn from and about each other.

Stockton said he and Felton were like brothers.

“It’s tight, I call him my little brother, but I’m the little brother,” Stockton said. “We’re great friends, we roomed together freshman year, and we got a bond and it’s helped us because we know that we’re competing every day.”

Felton also said he and Stockton had on-field chemistry. Both started playing for Tech in 2014: Stockton played 12 games, and Felton had a redshirt season.

Stockton came from Steele High School in Cibolo, and Felton came from Dekaney High School in Houston.

As a senior in high school, Felton rushed for 1,783 yards and scored 11 touchdowns, according to the website.

For Stockton, he ran for 2,159 yards and scored 38 touchdowns. He ended his high school career with over 6,000 rushing yards.

“It’s good. We’ve got our chemistry, we lived together freshman year,” Felton said. “So, we basically almost know everything and anything about each other, but it’s been great working alongside him and putting

my talents to the table to help this team and help him out as well.”

Something that both said they worked on and all the running backs worked on through the offseason was ball security.

For Felton, he said he focused on catching.

“One thing I’ve been focusing on is catching out of the backfield and also being able to see the blitz from the ball being snapped,” Felton said. “Those are the two main things I’ve been focusing on, and improving on in my game.”

The offensive line has helped him improve his game, Felton said.

The offensive line has 10 freshmen, both redshirt and non-redshirt this year, according to the website.

“It was pretty good,” Felton said. “Running behind the o-line was great, they did very good, I’ll say that, and I can’t wait to run behind that line and behind these receivers and everything and playing alongside Pat. So, it’s been a blessing, it’s been good.”

Something the running back position has also been focusing on is recognizing blitzes, Felton said.

The offensive line has done great with opening holes for the running backs throughout the scrimmage and offseason, he said.

“We’ve been focusing on just holding on to the ball, our ball security is our job security, and picking up the

For Stockton, he said he has been focusing on a little of everything to improve his game.

He said the things he is working on are also a huge part for the running backs.

“I’ve been trying to work on everything like catching, blocking, running the ball, studying film, and just those things right there are going to be key,” Stockton said.

“That’s not only a big key for me but just for the rest of the running backs as well.”

Stockton said he focuses on the things that he has every day, whether it’s family or his team. He was born in Zephyrhills, Florida, and has a sister named Brianna Stockton. He is currently studying for bachelor’s degree in human sciences.

“I’ve got my family, my son and most importantly I got guys watching over me, and it’s just a blessing being a part of this team,” Stockton said.

With his training for this season, Felton said the coaches helped him throughout the offseason to get game ready.

This year, Tech got a new strength and conditioning coach, Rusty Whitt.

“It’s been good working with coach Whitt and all of the training coaches and even my running back coach just watching film,” Felton said. “It’s been great to just get in the weight room, pumping some iron, and then going to see my position coach and watch a little bit of film on our opponents.”

Felton also said playing side-by-side with junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II has helped him improve his catching ability.

The one thing Stockton said he is most excited about for the season to start, is just getting the chance to play.

Something he said often was it was an honor to play for Tech.

New Tech program makes buying tickets easy for fans On Wednesday, Texas Tech Athletics launched a

new program that allows Red Raider fans to purchase game tickets through their smartphones.

The program is called Texas Tech Pass, according to a Tech Athletics news release. Tickets will be available for purchase by going to www.texastechpass.com and turning on ticket notifications.

Once the notifications are turned on, a text message will be sent to fans interested in the program when home game tickets are on sale.

East Carolina and UNLV are out of the Big 12’s expansion derby.

Officials at both schools said Wednesday that they were notified by the Big 12 that they are no longer being considered for membership.

East Carolina spokesman Tom McClellan says Commissioner Bob Bowlsby notified Chancellor Cecil Staton of the league’s decision Tuesday by phone.

Athletic director Jeff Compher says it’s “obviously not the decision we were hoping for,” but expressed satisfaction that “we were able to tell our story to not only the Big 12, but the entire nation.”

East Carolina is beginning its third season in the American Athletic Conference after winning two Conference USA championships in football in the 2000s.

UNLV President Len Jessup and athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy issued a statement later in the day to acknowledge the Rebels were no longer being considered. UNLV has been a member of the Mountain West Conference since 1990.

Hatfield talks family, dogs, love for football

By ARIANA HERNANDEZ Staff Writer

Clayton Hatfield is a force to be reckoned with on the field when it comes to kicking. His field goal percentage backs-up that statement. Yet, his performance on the field is just a fraction of who he is.

“I try to be a nice guy,” Hatfield said. “I’m family orientated. I like to be around my family, family comes first in everything I do. I don’t like to go out a lot. I just like to hang out at home, play with my dogs and spend a lot of time with my grandmother.”

Hatfield said he does not have a big family, but he does have a younger sister, who came to Tech this fall.

Hatfield’s relationship with his sister is close and tight-knit. They share some of the same interests, and he said he will be showing his sister the ropes this fall to help her get adjusted to college life.

“She is a freshman this fall,” Hatfield said. “She just started, so I’m kind of showing her how college works. She did cheer in high school. She’s kind of thinking about doing it again and trying to get on the team.”

Besides spending time with his family, Hatfield said he enjoys spending time with his dog Cooper, a German shorthaired pointer.

Hatfield said his dog is good company.

“Clayton (Hatfield) is the student athlete everyone wants,” Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said during a previous interview. “He is a good representation of what Texas Tech is about.”

While it is easy to believe Hatfield has always been football driven, it should not come as a surprise that he played soccer, as well.

Soccer players tend to gravitate toward being a kicker on the football field because of their experience with kicking a ball from soccer.

Hatfield played both sports in high school, but once he saw the future football could give him in college, he said he decided to stick with football as his main focus.

“I started out playing soccer,” Hatfield said. “I quit playing soccer my junior year once I started getting interests from colleges for football.

I’m the first person to play football in my family.”

Hatfield’s father thought he would quit football in three

days, he said.

Hatfield wanted to play at running back, he said, but an injury to the team’s kicker gave him the opportunity to kick.

Hatfield said he was impressed not by Tech’s rigor or vibe, but by the hospitality he found at the campus.

“I came up here because coach (Mike) Jinks, he recruited down in our area in San Antonio. He came by my school one day and said, ‘Hey we’d love to see you at our camp,’” Hatfield said. “So, I came up here one day, and I didn’t even know really anyone besides coach Jinks, but they knew who I was, and I mean they treated me really nice and I fell in love with it.”

Jinks is now the head coach at Bowling Green.

However, since Hatfield is a student athlete, most of the time it is the athlete in him that receives the most attention.

However, the student aspect of him is just as impressive. He has high expectations for himself once he graduates from Tech. He said he hopes to work alongside his father one day.

“I’m majoring in sports management,” Hatfield said.

“I’m going to try to go to law school and be some sort of agent or lawyer. My dad works in the car business, I really like the car business.

I’ll probably end up working with him.”

Hatfield is friends with many of his teammates. When asked who some of his good friends on the team are, he said junior deep snapper Kyle Heffron and sophomore wide receiver Kash Knutson.

Hatfield said he also spends quite a bit of time with junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and junior wide receiver Ian Sadler.

“We just kind of hangout,” Hatfield said. “Play videogames, watch movies.”

Mahomes said Hatfield is an easy going guy and an excellent player.

“Clayton (Hatfield) is a great guy,” Mahomes said during a previous interview.

“He is a down to earth person and is a great role model for the team.”

Mahomes said he and Hatfield share a common interest — Mexican food.

“My favorite place to go eat would probably be Montelongos,” Hatfield said. “I love Mexican food.” @TheDT_Sports

Stockton improves, prepares to start Saturday

By JACK DENSMORE Staff Writer

Junior running back Justin Stockton began playing for Texas Tech in 2014, where he played in 12 games and started one. That year, he rushed for 396 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in 48 carries. Last year, he rushed for 367 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns. He also had 341 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.

Stockton was born in Zephyrhills, Florida. In his senior year at Steele High School in Cibolo, he rushed for 2,159 yards and 38 rushing touchdowns.

He averaged 12 yards-percarry. Overall, he ended his high school career with over 6,000 rushing yards.

“I’ve got my family, my son and most importantly I got guys watching over me, and it’s just a blessing being a part of this team,” Stockton said.

During his freshman year, sophomore running back DeMarcus Felton and Stockton roomed together.

Now, Stockton constantly competes with Felton for the starting spot, but also works with him every day.

“It’s tight, I call him my little brother, but I’m the little brother,” Stockton said. “We’re great friends, we roomed together freshman year, and we got a bond and it’s helped us

because we know that we’re competing every day.”

Throughout the offseason, Stockton said he has been working on a bit of everything to improve his game. Last year, he was AllBig 12 honorable mention and recorded a touchdown in eight of the 13 games he played in, according to the Tech Athletics website. He also ranked fourth in the team in scoring.

“I’ve been trying to work

on everything like catching, blocking, running the ball, studying film and just those things right there are going to be key,” Stockton said. “That’s not only a big key for me but just for the rest of the running backs as well.”

Felton said he and Stockton have good chemistry on the field.

“We’ve got our chemistry, we lived together freshman year. So, we basically almost know everything and

anything about each other,” Felton said.

Stockton said it is an honor to play for the team. He will start in this Saturday’s game against Stephen F. Austin.

No. 15 Tech to Tech to follow clear bag policy host No. 19 Cal

The No. 15 Texas Tech soccer team will face off against No. 19 Cal at 7 p.m.

Friday at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

The Red Raider’s skills will be put to the test as they face their first ranked team of the season. So far, Tech has had a positive record with three wins, one draw and no losses.

The Tech soccer team is looking to gain their fourth win of the season on Friday.

Like the Red Raiders, the Bears have also won three games this season, but have lost one game. Both Tech and Cal have faced off against New Mexico this season and both teams defeated the Lobos. Tech defeated the Lobos 2-1, whereas Cal shut them out 2-0.

This will not be the first time this season the Bears have played against a top ranked team. Cal faced off against No. 21 Santa Carla and earned its loss bringing them from No.18 to their current ranking at No. 19.

This game will put the Red Raiders to the test

and challenge some of the younger team members who have not played a ranked opponent yet. So far, the bulk of the scoring for Tech has come from its freshmen.

Freshmen Jordie Harr, Jade King and Gabbie Puente have scored for the Red Raiders this season. Even with little collegiate experience, the freshmen have been able to contribute to the team.

The upperclassmen have also got on the board for the Red Raiders, and they will try to continue to do so against upcoming competition.

Juniors Rebekah O’Brien and Natalie Schmutz have both been active on the field and scored for the Red Raiders.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson has been a force in the net this season. She has helped Tech secure games by blocking 15 shots so far on the season.

At Texas Tech’s Saturday home season opener against Stephen F. Austin, Tech Athletics will enforce a clear bag policy for all fans entering Jones AT&T Stadium, according to a Tech Athletics release.

The entry policy allows fans to enter the stadium with the following four kinds of bags: clear plastic, vinyl and PVC bags no larger than 12” x 6”x 12”; one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags; clutch bags about the size of a hand with or without a handle or strap which can fit into one of the clear plastic bags; and medically necessary items which pass inspection by game day staff.

Some of the bags which fans cannot enter the game with include purses larger

than a clutch bag, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, any kind of luggage, diaper bags, computer bags, binocular cases, camera bags and non-approved seat backs and cushions.

Tech began the clear bag policy to increase access into its athletic venues and increase public safety, according to the release.

The clear bag policy allows fans to bring one large clear bag and one small clutch purse because security personnel can easily inspect them, according to the release. If a fan attempts to enter Tech’s home opener with an unapproved bag, he or she will be asked to return the bag to their vehicle.

Last season, the Lumberjacks offensive line combined for a total of 200 games played and 164 starts.

Raidergate gives students tailgating opportunity

Campus is packed with students, alumni and families ready to witness Red Raider football firsthand.

Before heading for the Jones AT&T stadium, fans can enjoy food and fun at Raidergate, a student tailgate tradition.

Raidergate is the official student tailgating section where thousands of students get excited and ready to cheer the Red Raiders.

“Raidergate is the largest and possibly the only student tailgate on campus,” Troy Pike, unit coordinator for the Tech Activities Board, said. “It’s completely free for students.”

The tailgate is made possible through a partnership between TAB and the Student Government Associa-

tion, Pike said.

The R1 parking lot will open four hours before the game for students to enjoy music and free food, Pike said. Students can reserve passes online to bring their vehicles to the event.

Raidergate offers a safe tailgating experience for new and old students, Hector Aguirre, a senior landscape architecture major from Lubbock and current TAB President, said. “(Raidergate) is a safe environment for students to tailgate, and it’s in a great spot in the center of campus, not too far from the stadium,” Aguirre said. “The parking lot is blocked off, and the Lubbock county sheriffs are there to provide security.”

Overall, Raidergate is a great way to bring students together before the game in a secure environment, Pike said.

Game day is an exciting time for fans, Abby Felps, a junior industrial engineering major from San Antonio, said. It is all about uniting the campus community.

“Even though we are all different, during the game everyone is the same,” Felps said. “Everyone can always agree the referee made a bad call or that was a great touchdown.”

Students are counting down the days until Saturday, whether they are excited about tailgating, watching the Goin’ Band perform or the actual game, Felps said.

From tailgating to watching the Masked Rider charge across the field, game day is a great experience, Pike said. Even if one is not a football fan, there is always something for everyone to enjoy.

Game day parking options will change from usual

Although parking options are usually set in stone, Texas Tech students, faculty and staff have to tweak their plans for game day. Reserved areas often change status on the day of the football game.

One of the biggest changes is the entity controlling parking areas, Stacy Stockard, marketing coordinator for Transportation & Parking Services, said. Instead of Parking Services controlling things, it is the Red Raider Club that takes the reins.

According to the Red Raider Club’s website, the lots available to park in are mostly reserved for members of the club who are donors.

In the map on the website, lots that are not on campus

are the only free parking spots open to the public.

“They’re the ones who do the game day parking pass,” Stockard said, “and online they have a great very thorough map of the different lots online where (fans can park).”

Most of the permit holders who can be affected by the changes in parking availability are commuter permit holders, Stockard said.

However, what is off-limits to fans and club members is residence hall parking.

Even on home game football days, residence hall lots are reserved 24/7, she said.

In most instances, there are people near the entrance of parking lots near the stadium who control who is able to go in or out, Stockard said. Parking Services will also send out an email to the permit holders on Thursday to provide exact details of

their parking options.

Those having issues with people taking their designated areas are advised to contact the parking services department immediately, she said.

We want everyone to have a good time and we want parking to be a part of that.

STACY STOCKARD PARKING SERVICES “For commuters — Commuter North, West and Raider Garage are used in that Red Raider game day parking (areas),” she said. “So, we’ll send notices out to those permit holders as well.”

Towing will be enforced for Saturday’s game, she

said, and both Commuter North and Commuter West will need to be cleared by 6 a.m. that day. However, on the day prior, there will be a large electronic sign near the lots that will clearly denote when the lots need to be cleared.

Parking Services also makes provisions for people who are on a waitlist for a specific parking lot, Stockard said, which they will email out.

There are also some areas available off-campus. Most close parking near the stadium also happen to be near to apartment complexes, Blanca Samarripas, leasing manager for U Club Townhomes, said. Areas that are marked as towing enforced are always off-limits, but if there are no signs then attendees have usually nothing to worry about.

“As long as it’s not covered

parking, then it’s normally fine,” she said.

Off-limit areas usually include business parking lots and reserved spaces for people who live in certain complexes, Samarripas said. However, a problem they have ran into in recent years has been people parking in their front offices and blocking employee entrances and exits.

On a different note there is available RV parking on gameday, Stockard said, that is available in the Commuter Satellite parking lot.

Those begin to get cordoned off Thursday evening.

“But we find, too, that given that time period

the usage counts we see in satellite, our satellite permit holders won’t be affected,” she said.

However, Stockard said people should take advantage of carpooling opportunities and plan ahead, in case it is a long trek from the parking spot to the Jones AT&T Stadium.

This can be especially helpful for those who are visiting and do not know parking restrictions on campus and around the city, she said.

“It’s an exciting day, and we want everyone to have a good time,” Stockard said. “And we want parking to be part of that.” @DailyToreador
