t 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium, the Texas Tech football team will take the field for the 1,000th game in program history and kick off its 91st season. The school’s all-time record is 544-423-32, according to a Tech Athletics news release.

The Red Raiders will take on Sam Houston State in the newly renovated stadium for the 1,000th game.

After posting a 4-8 record in 2014, the team is not underestimating any opponents this season, senior defensive end Branden Jackson said, and every team will get their best shot.

“We didn’t forget last year. We know how

we came out last year and how the season ended up,” he said. “Last year we were riding away from a bowl game feeling like we were going to make some big noise and we got hit in the face early and we didn’t handle adversity the right way.”

The Bearkats enter this season ranked No. 4 nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll. Last season, they were co-champions of the Southland Conference with an 11-5 record including a 7-1 record in conference games, according to the release.

After playing close games against Central Arkansas and UTEP in 2014, junior wide receiver Dylan Cantrell said the team is not going to underestimate the Bearkats.

Sam Houston State is led by preseason all-conference junior quarterback Jared Johnson. He was a dual-threat quarterback last season, throwing for 3,054 yards and 21 touchdowns while also running for 999 yards and six touchdowns, according to Sam Houston’s athletic website.

Sophomore cornerback Tevin Madison said the defense is not intimidated by having to contain a dual-threat quarterback.

“He looks good, man. He’s a great player,” he said. “But we go against Nic Shimonek and he’s pretty much the same.

He can run, he can throw. So he’s given us a good look.”

Despite the Bearkats being a strong FCS opponent, the Red Raiders are hoping history repeats as they have not lost to an FCS team since 1988, according to the release. Tech has also won 12 consecutive season openers and 14 straight home season openers.

The two teams have only played each other once before, with Tech claiming an 80-21 win in 2005.

The Red Raiders will rely on returning players to improve on their record from last year. The team returns 16 starters, nine on offense and seven on defense, according to the release.

On offense the team is led by senior run-

ning back DeAndre Washington, who became the first 1,000-yard rusher in school history since 1998.

While Washington is the clear-cut starter, sophomore Justin Stockton, junior Quinton White Jr. and freshman DeMarcus Felton will always attempt to make an impact on offense, Washington said.

Washington would like to top 2,500 all-purpose yards in 2015, he said, but his main goals are team focused.

“We just want to do something that hasn’t happened around here in a long time,” he said, “and that’s get that Big 12 Championship.”

The Red Raiders still have not announced who will be leading the offense at quarterback, but whoever it is will be throwing to senior Jakeem Grant, junior Devin Lauderdale, sophomore Ian Sadler and Cantrell, the starting wide receivers for the Red Raiders.

On the other side of the ball, senior defensive end Pete Robertson will once again be trying to wreak havoc on opponents’ quarterbacks.

He recorded 12 sacks as a junior, the most in the conference. Robertson said he wants even more sacks this season.

Robertson’s defensive line teammate, senior Rika Levi, said the line was embarrassed by its performance last season and is going to make sure it improves.

“We’re not coming out here to be these nice little dudes that play around with people,” Levi said.

“We’re coming out here like grown men and we’re going to take what’s ours.”

On the latest Tech depth chart, the only freshman starter is Jah’Shawn Johnson at the free safety position.

Kingsbury said Johnson was impressive all throughout camp and earned a starting job.

“I see a guy who is a ball hawk,” he said. “He attacks the football, always tends to be around it, so I’m excited to see what he does when the lights come on. He tends to be a guy that plays best when the pressure is on him in game-like situations.” @JeremyK_DT

Five big questions remain as Tech begins season

T

he 2014 season left more questions than answers about the upcoming season.

The Red Raiders finished the second year of the Kliff Kingsbury era with a 4-8 record, the worst season since 1983. The season was surprising after a blowout bowl win in 2013.

The answers to these five questions surrounding the football team this season could be the difference between an 8-4 season or another 4-8 disappointment.

1. Can the offense limit penalties and turnovers while the defense forces them?

Throughout the last two seasons, the Red Raiders have either been last or next to last in the Big 12 Conference in both penalties and turnover margin, according to the conference website.

Each of those years, the team threw the most interceptions in the conference.

Countering that, the Red

Raiders have intercepted the fewest passes on defense.

Turning the ball over often and rarely forcing a turnover is one of the quickest ways to lose a game.

With firm-handed running backs and two quarterbacks with another year of experience, the offense could potentially turn the ball over noticeably less than the past two seasons. New defensive coordinator David Gibbs has stressed the importance of turnovers to the defense every day this offseason.

A much more experienced secondary could intercept double the amount of passes they did last year.

With more experience on the entire team, the Red Raiders should also

be more disciplined than previous years. But, if penalties and a negative turnover margin continue to happen, the team’s record will suffer again.

2. Can the starting quarterback be consistent and stay healthy?

Having a clear starter at the quarterback position has been something nonexistent for the past two seasons. The same is true for the season opener on Saturday. Whether junior Davis Webb or sophomore Patrick Mahomes gets the nod, they will have to play consistently for the team to have a chance at returning to a bowl game. Tech quarterbacks have thrown 18 interceptions each of the past two seasons.

Also, both quarterbacks suffered injuries last season which made winning games late in the season harder.

Limiting interceptions and staying injury free is the second-biggest factor to the team’s success in 2015.

3. Will the defensive front seven be improved against the run?

After turnovers, rush defense was the team’s biggest weakness a year ago. They allowed 260 yards per game, the worst in the Big 12. The front seven lost starting linebackers Sam Eguavoen, V.J. Fehoko and Kenny Williams, but the team is hoping Micah Awe, Kris Williams and Malik Jenkins can emerge behind the defensive line.

Senior defensive linemen Branden Jackson and Pete Robertson are entering their final season and are motivated to go out on a high note. Senior defensive tackle Rika Levi is now healthy and could be a run-stopping force in the middle.

Freshman defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko has a chance to earn significant playing time and be the freshman of the year for the team.

If the defense continues to allow more than 250 rushing yards per game, it will

struggle to give the offense a chance to win.

4. Can the wide receivers produce with no obvious No. 1?

During the past few seasons the wide receiver group lost leaders such as Jace Amaro, Eric Ward and Bradley Marquez. With the four starting wide receivers now determined for Saturday, there is no obvious No. 1 receiver.

While senior Jakeem Grant has become the leader of the group, he has not had a 1,000-yard season, which is a possibility this year. Juniors Devin Lauderdale and Dylan Cantrell have proved they are dangerous receivers, but need to prove they can be consistent pass catching options for whoever is throwing them the ball.

While this offense does not necessarily need a top receiver to be successful, one could emerge as the No. 1 just a few games into the season.

5. Can the running backs change the air raid offense?

Season ticket sales second highest in Tech history Season ticket sales for the 2015 Texas Tech football season stand at 33,500, the second highest amount of season passes sold in Tech history.

Tech’s highest selling season came just one year ago when Tech recorded 38,000 ticket sales at the start of the

2014 campaign.

Associate AD for Marketing, Sales and Service Erik Book said the 2015 season ticket passes had an estimated 80 percent retention rate.

Although a high number of season tickets went out to individuals outside of the Tech student population,

Book said Tech increased the amount of student seating for Tech’s Saturday home opener versus Sam Houston State.

“For the opening game, we made a decision to increase the student section by 3,000 seats,” Book said.

“We have just under 4,000 seats remaining for sale for

the first game.”

The available seats open for the home opener are currently on sale at $15 because of a partnership between Tech and United Supermarkets, Book said.

Radio host Bennett, Cowboys resolve suite issue FORT WORTH (AP) — Financial radio personality Dawn Bennett is “in good standing” with the Dallas Cowboys after the NFL team withdrew a lawsuit and said allegations of late lease payments for a suite at AT&T Stadium came

from a misunderstanding with the woman’s bank.

Cowboys Stadium LP’s request to cancel the breach of contract lawsuit was approved by a judge in March.

The lawsuit, filed last November, alleged that Bennett

hadn’t made the $500,000 annual payment for the 2014 season and paid only $200,000 in 2013.

Bennett is the CEO of Bennett Group Finance Services in Washington, D.C., and hosts a nationally syndicated

radio show called “Financial Myth Busting.”

The Cowboys wrote in a letter provided by Bennett’s attorney that the team had “worked through any and all misunderstandings” with her bank.

AT&T Stadium, Book said, but the majority of individual game ticket prices didn’t rise, but rather decreased from the previous season.

Senior running back DeAndre Washington wants 2,500 all-purpose yards in 2015. By running behind one of the best, if not the best, offensive line in the conference, it makes that seem attainable.

The main obstacle that could limit Washington is his backups. Last season, junior Quinton White and sophomore Justin Stockton did not touch the ball near as much as Washington, but their touches were effective. The running backs have also noticed redshirt freshman Demarcus Felton’s ability as a runner.

With a four-man rotation in the backfield and uncertainty at the quarterback position, the Red Raider offense has a chance at becoming a run-first team. Also, because the offense plays so fast and runs a high number of plays, there will be plenty of opportunities to run the ball more while still putting up impressive passing numbers. @JeremyK_DT

Jones Stadium evolves throughout time

On Nov. 29, 1947, the Texas Tech football team played the first home game of the season against Hardin-Simmons. The Red Raiders won the game, but the significance came more from where the teams played.

The game was the first ever played at the newly opened football stadium at the corner of 4th St. and University Ave., and although the name remains the same, much has changed about the Red Raiders’ home field.

Lubbock resident David Langford said he was about seven years old when he first saw a game at Jones Stadium, and it was in 1961, just 14 years after the stadium opened.

“Dad got season tickets while he was a faculty member, so we would usually go as a family,” he said. “A lot of faculty would pretty much sit together over there on the west side.”

Langford said the changes from then to now are pretty drastic, especially since his earliest memories of the stadium are as a child.

In the early days of the stadium, the whole north end zone was grass with just the Double T there. The area, he said, was used basically as a play area.

“The kids would all play during the game up and down the grass with the Double T insignia in it,” he said, “and then whenever there was a field goal or extra point, they would kick it into the grass, and we would all fight like the dickens to get the ball.”

It was pretty sad for all the kids of that era, he said, when the big grass area was filled most of the way in with seats, taking away their place to play.

Besides the removal of the grass area, the late 60s and 70s also brought some of the

worst weather the stadium has ever had to endure.

Langford said one of his most vivid memories is also probably one of the weirdest weather games.

It was pretty stormy as Tech kicked off against Kansas, he said, but it was not until late in the first half that fans knew anything was wrong. Then, the announcer came on and said a funnel cloud had been spotted in southwest Lubbock.

Just a few minutes later, another funnel cloud was announced as seen in northeast Lubbock. The game continued on until midway through the third quarter, when the announcer said a third funnel cloud had been spotted in Lubbock and fans should go home.

“I think that may be the only time in Tech history that a game was stopped before the end, if memory serves me correctly,” Langford said.

“We had to go underneath the stadium and stand there because it was so stormy. I thought it was fun, though, and just about as exciting as it could get.”

Lubbock endured another tornado in 1970, one of the worst in Texas history, and it did damage to the stadium, bending the lights around the Jones.

More updates to the stadium came throughout the 70s and 80s, including the moving back of the stadium bleachers and the adding of the neon Double T to the outside of the stadium.

Another big change that came in 1970, according to the Tech Athletics website, was the addition of artificial turf as the playing surface.

It stayed that way all through the 1990s, when Tech alumnus Jason Moore was attending games as a student.

When he got to Tech in 1993, Moore said, the biggest impression he got from the stadium was just from its size.

“I thought that my old high school stadium was pretty awesome, but now I think it’s pretty puny,” he said. “When I got to Lubbock and saw the Tech stadium, it was basically a much larger, grander version of a high school stadium.

There were no frills. It was just all about function.”

In 2006, the playing surface changed again, this time to field turf, which is what it is now. There were also arches added to the outside of the north end zone, but other than that no major additions have been made until this past offseason.

Last year, however, Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt announced the Campaign for Fearless Champions, which would update the stadium seats for this season

and then add suites in the south end zone where the classic Double T scoreboard currently stands.

“I think that would be a mistake, personally,” Moore said. “It’s such an iconic part of the stadium and that’s one thing, that when people outside of Lubbock see it, they know exactly where you’re at and what stadium you’re playing in.”

The scoreboard has not been taken down yet, but all of the bleachers and seatbacks in the stadium were replaced for this year. Tech fans will first get to experience the new additions for the first time at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday when the Red Raiders play their 1,000th game in program history. @EvCorder_DT

Highest ranking, early opener push No. 2 TCU (AP) — Trevone Boykin and his buddies at TCU have grown tired of hearing about last season, when the Horned Frogs shared the Big 12 title but were left out of the first College Football Playoff.

The second-ranked Horned Frogs finally get to start fresh with an early opener. They are at Minnesota on Thursday night with their highest preseason ranking ever.

“The talk is cheap and I’m ready to just go out there and play the game,” said Boykin, considered an early Heisman Trophy front-runner after finishing fourth in the voting last season.

Funny how perceptions of TCU and its senior quarterback have changed in a year’s time. Last August,

coach Gary Patterson’s team was coming off a 4-8 season and putting in a new up-tempo offense with new co-coordinators. There was uncertainty, at least publicly, about whether Boykin would even be the starting quarterback before what was a record-setting season.

“Our mindset really hasn’t changed,” Boykin said this week. “Our mindset is just like we came off a 4-8 season.”

Boykin accounted for 4,608 total yards and 42 touchdowns as TCU finished 12-1, capped by a 42-3 victory over Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl after the playoff snub.

Minnesota got off to a 6-1 start a year ago on way to their second consecutive 8-5 season.

TCU looks for golden start, UT takes Big 12 to South Bend

Baylor investigating sexual assault handling

(AP) — Things to watch in the Big 12 Conference during the opening week of the season.

Three teams get started with road games before Saturday, the day the other seven league teams open up — all but one of those at home: GAME OF THE WEEK No. 2 TCU at Minnesota.

After being left out of the first College Football Playoff, the defending co-Big 12 champion Horned Frogs open Thursday night at the Big Ten team coached by Gary Patterson’s good friend, Jerry Kill. Even though TCU is a double-figure favorite and the Golden Gophers haven’t won at home against a top 10 team since 1977, Patterson sounds like his old self when talking about just wanting to win by one point.

Even after losing six of their seven tacklers on defense, TCU should be OK with quarterback Trevone Boykin among 10 returning starters on an offense that averaged 47 points and 533 yards a game last season.

TCU scored a season-low 30 points against Minnesota last

season, but that was only the Frogs’ second game in their new up-tempo offense.

BEST MATCHUP While the rest of the Big 12 teams are favored in their openers — well, Iowa State did lose to Northern Iowa two years ago — Texas starts its second season under coach Charlie Strong as an underdog at No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday night. Strong was a defensive assistant in South Bend from 1995-98. The Irish started 6-0 last season before losing five of their last seven games. Strong is utilizing players he recruited to Texas, with six freshmen starters and eight other freshmen being the top backup behind upper classmen at other positions.

WACO (AP) — Baylor University has hired a Philadelphia law firm to independently investigate the university’s handling of sexual assault complaints, including one against defensive end Sam Ukwuachu.

Ukwuachu was sentenced

last month to six months in jail and 10 years of probation for sexual assault.

In a statement Wednesday, Baylor regents said Gina Maisto Smith and Leslie Gomez, partners in the law firm Pepper Hamilton LLP, will lead the

investigation. The Baylor statement describes the pair as experts in the institutional response to all aspects of sexual misconduct matters. The attorneys will report their findings to the Baylor University Board of Regents.

Walk-on players contribute to Red Raiders

This offseason, four members of the Texas Tech football team were granted the gift of having their books and tuition paid for by the university.

What is unique about these players is that each one of them walked on to the team to begin their college football careers.

The players receiving scholarships are transfer redshirt sophomore quarterback Nic Shimonek, sophomore defensive end Talor Nunez, sophomore wide receiver Zach Austin and junior fullback Tyler Scalzi.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury and his coaching staff informed the recipients of their rewards during the summer and even had some fun when telling

Nunez he was being placed on scholarship.

Nunez said he discovered he was being put on scholarship after practice one day when Kingsbury was discussing the Summer II session grades, and Nunez was the top student on the defensive line.

“It was a normal day and we were going over grades because Kliff is huge on academics, and he highlighted my name and then showed a good play that I made in practice,” Nunez said. “He was saying good things about me and that just made me happy, but when he was walking out he turned around at the door and said, ‘Oh and by the way, you’re on scholarship.’”

Nunez got to Tech by way of Midland, where he grew up and played football for the Midland Lee Rebels, he said.

The Texas Tech Football roster recently released this year’s depth chart, and there were questions left unanswered, especially the question of who the starting quarterback will be.

One thing is set, however, and it is that senior David Brenner will start as the deep snapper on special teams for Tech.

Brenner has played the position since 2013 after being redshirted in 2011 and being on the scout team in 2012, according to the Tech Athletics website. 2013 was the first time Brenner played with the Red Raiders.

“All three years have been good for me each and every year,” Brenner said. “I just work on my craft and these

past years with (special teams) coach Darrin Chiaverini have been awesome.”

While attending Canyon Creek Christian Academy in Richardson, Brenner played the linebacker position and was part of the academy’s back-to-back state championship seasons in 2009 and 2010.

He was also named an allstate linebacker both years.

“I didn’t get serious into deep snapping until after my senior year of playing football,” Brenner said. “I picked it up randomly and it was kind of a gift. It’s kind of hard picking it up and critiquing it, but it’s been a blessing learning the talent.”

This season Brenner will be snapping for senior punter/ place kicker Taylor Symmank.

This season Brenner said he looks forward to being a bigger part of the special teams by making perfect snaps and being an impact down the field by making tackles.

“An individual goal for me is that I want to be able to get the ball back to where my holder

wants it and where Taylor (Symmank) wants it,” Brenner said. “I also want to get involved in tackling down field and make a couple of plays.”

Brenner will begin his senior season alongside his teammates at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday as Tech will host Sam Houston State at Jones AT&T Stadium for Tech’s 1,000th all-time game. @BSoliz_DT

He was the quarterback for the Rebels, he said, and came to the Red Raiders planning on being utilized at the safety position.

Once he got to his first spring camp, Nunez said, the coaches told him to gain one pound every week to help him hit a mark of 240 pounds.

When he reached his designated weight goal, he was put on the defensive line and has played the position ever since, he said.

Nunez improved so much that co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Mike Smith put him as the backup to senior defensive lineman Branden Jackson, Smith said.

“I call him my technician,” Smith said. “He does exactly what I tell him to do and he doesn’t go outlaw and he’s a kid that I can rely on.”

Jackson, who will be starting ahead of Nunez on the defensive line, said Nunez’s drive has been inspirational to the rest of the defensive line, and he is really excited about what they can do this season.

“His work ethic is second to none,” Jackson said. “I can’t wait to get him out there and watch him compete. A lot of people don’t know, (but) everyone on our defensive line is on scholarship now. The defensive line, as tough as we are and as tough as we look, we shed tears when our brothers were awarded those.”

Nunez will take the field as an athlete on scholarship for the first time this weekend when Tech kicks off the season against Sam Houston State at 2:30 p.m.

After rough 2014, Swoopes still starting QB at Texas AUSTIN (AP) — Tyrone Swoopes was his usual quiet, understated self.

Speaking softly with a group of reporters the day he was announced as Texas’ starting quarterback against No. 11 Notre Dame, Swoopes deflected a chance to puff out his chest and had to be goaded into reluctantly declaring — kind of — that the 2015 Longhorns are “his team.”

“Everybody looks to the starting quarterback” to be the leader, Swoopes said. “But that wasn’t my focus, which was to be the best I can be.”

Swoopes talked about wanting to improve, staying within himself and making sure to “do my part.”

He sounded a lot like the 2014 Swoopes, which is exactly what the Longhorns don’t want on the field.

Thrust into the starting role before he was ready, Swoopes struggled all season

in 2014. The worst came at the end in blowout losses to TCU and Arkansas.

That prompted coach Charlie Strong to open the starting job to competition with redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard. Strong also talked about changing the offense to a spread attack, which seemed to play right into the mobile Heard’s strengths as a runner.

All signs pointed to Heard getting a shot to unseat Swoopes as the starter.

But by the end of spring, Swoopes still had the lead on the position. By summer, Strong was telegraphing that Swoopes was his No. 1 and made it official on Monday.

Swoopes was nonchalant about winning the biggest battle of training camp, even though it didn’t appear to be much of a fight. He said he seldom thought about the daily competition.

Trump’s platform undermined by own history P

oliticians often portray the image they want the public to see. They will say one thing loudly and proudly while doing another behind closed doors.

Some politicians, such as Donald Trump, are famous for calling these people out on their shenanigans.

These politicians are also pumped full of hot air and will try to sell you junk from a dump like it’s a jewel-encrusted Ferrari.

I’ve heard significant amounts of noise and seen ink on the potential improvements Trump would make to America. I’ve also read his immigration plan. I have not been impressed, except that so many have not looked into who Trump truly is.

Trump is a good actor, a decent speaker and great at selling his personal brand.

He is brash and critical of all who oppose him, attempting to browbeat and deride them into seeming worthless. This can easily

be seen by watching the first GOP primary debate of the 2016 election cycle and looking at its aftermath.

So then, let us look and see who is the real Trump.

by Ethan Brown on opposingviews.com, Trump would likely raise taxes on the upper class and hedge fund investors and bankers. It is interesting that such a vaunted champion of the conservative movement would so readily embrace taxing the rich and that he himself doesn’t mind paying some taxes.

Trump’s immigration plan, titled, “Immigration reform that will make America great again,” is a masterpiece of veiled erosion of civil liberties, executive power grabs and growing government even more. Again, it is interesting to see people celebrate Trump as a champion of conservatism when his plan, in the details, flies in the face of the very irate

outcry against large government that is the conservative movement. Trump will raise wages by government fiat, control which pools of workers can be hired and micromanage how companies can choose which workers to hire.

Trump even promotes policies that contradict his tendencies to hire immigrants instead of domestic workers. According to an article by Kellen Howell of The Washington Times, an analysis of U.S. labor records shows Trump’s businesses have imported more than 1,100 workers since the year 2000. One of these companies applied to import 70 foreign workers in August 2015 alone.

Trump claims to be firmly against illegal immigration and hiring undocumented migrant workers, but according to a Washington Post article by Antonio Olivo, these workers may be working on one of Trump’s newest hotels in Washing-

ton, D.C. I find the logical inconsistency in the blind assumption and acceptance of Trump’s word by some of his supporters startling.

Trump, in the Aug. 6 GOP primary debate, pointedly remarked he used legal loopholes to cheat lenders he and his holdings owed money to. I find it interesting that conservatives are rallying behind an individual who brags about cheating people he is indebted to. What do his supporters think he would do with taxpayer dollars? Do they think he would spend his own money on everything?

Trump also has been heavily criticized for his brash approach to foreign policy, or his lack of foreign policy altogether. Trump actually has been heavily criticized for his brash approach to anyone who crosses him.

Why do his supporters think it is a good idea to give him the presidency along with the nuclear weapon launch codes and procedures that

go along with it?

Trump also supports, as was shown in the GOP primary debate, a single-payer healthcare system. Do his conservative followers think supporting a big-government solution is in keeping with conservative values?

In short, my opinion is that Trump is an expert political magician, flashing one hand around while accomplishing his true goals with another. For people claiming to be fed up with establishment politicians and politicians serving their own ends over the good of their constituents, it is historically and logically inconsistent to support Trump as an antiestablishment candidate.

Trump is, when you get past the cameras, lights and constructed brand, the worst parts of the establishment and not someone I would ever want to trust with nuclear launch codes or the lives of our military. jbowles@dailytoreador.com

Financial literacy Citizens must not give up liberties crucial for success

T

o begin this column, I want to define what the term “financial literacy” means. According to the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, on the 2008 Annual Report to the President, the term is defined as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well-being.”

After a long life’s worth of work, no one wants to be 66 (the current American retirement age, according to the National Academy of Social Insurance) and still be working because they squandered away all of their hard-earned money making poor financial decisions. I mean, doesn’t everybody want to have a good amount of money to relax with and enjoy old age with the benefits of retirement?

With the continuation of the struggling economy and Social Security leaning toward becoming non-existent in the coming years, it is more important than ever to have a complete understanding of knowledge and skills that will help financially for the future. According to a BB&T banking article titled, “The Importance of Financial Literacy, “(Social Security) now serves more like a safety net that will provide only for survival not enjoyment.” I don’t know about everybody else, but when I’m retired I still want to have some type of enjoyment in my life.

Back in high school three years ago, I never really had the chance to learn about financial literacy. There was never an offered class that related to making the reallife decisions that would be useful for my financial future. I never learned about mortgage payments, bills, how to write a check, how to get a job or filing a tax return. All I ever learned about credit cards was that they were risky to get, especially during my teenage years.

Luckily, my parents were able to teach me most of the basics of financial literacy, which included those of which I have listed above.

Unfortunately, the basics simply aren’t enough to become financially literate.

After hearing about Texas Tech’s new personal finance minor, I decided to try it out and take my first “Introduction to Personal Financial Planning” class. From day

one, I learned there are multiple aspects along with “money personalities” as to why people spend and save money the way they do.

Some may like to spend their money right away to make them happy, while others may sacrifice their current desires for something greater by saving their money. Our world needs different types of “money personalities” such as these two to keep our world running. After all, if everyone saved as much as possible there would be much less money in circulation.

The best advice I ever heard about money and how to save it was from my uncle, who earned his Ph.D. in economics. He said, “If you want to be rich, you need to work hard, study, earn an education and live like a poor man.” What he means is simple — the less money spent on things that really don’t matter or make a significant impact on one’s life, the better the financial future of that person will become.

Happiness may be far away, but if the goal is to become rich, or even just short-term financial stability, happiness may be a sacrifice one might have to make.

Ultimately, it is important for everyone to have some sort of financial plan.

It is a solid way to learn how to live on a budget and save money.

Also, money not only brings happiness but also brings stability and comfort. Knowing that one has money set aside for emergencies greatly reduces stress and brings more stability for when any action involving risk is needed within a period of one’s life.

All in all, I encourage my colleagues at Tech, audience, family and friends to set a goal financially and strive to achieve it. No matter how general the plan or how small of an amount of money is saved, one may find that it is much easier than thought, while happiness and stability will continue to build for future success. cpolkosnik@dailytoreador.com

One of the highlights of the Aug. 6 Republican presidential debate was the fiery exchange between New Jersey Gov. Christie and Senator Rand Paul about the NSA’s bulk collection of Americans’ phone records, a program justified under the Patriot Act and revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013, according to a June 4 Politifact article titled “Factchecking the NSA phone records program.”

The program, which allowed the government to collect information about the phone numbers involved in the call, the length of the call and the date, was effectively ended in June when President Barack Obama signed a bill requiring the government to get a court order to view such records, according to the article.

However, the NSA has continued to collect data as it is in the process of transitioning the program to the phone companies, according to an Aug. 28 article by The Washington Post titled “Appeals court deals blow to lawsuit over NSA’s bulk phone data collection,” which also details how the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected a lawsuit

Yes, it does mean law enforcement will have to work harder to catch criminals, but making their job easier is not worth giving up essential liberties, no matter how afraid of terrorists we are.

This can also be seen in other areas, such as with gun control. Many would prefer we give up this liberty in exchange for a sense of security, but it’s just not worth it. If we allow the government to take our guns, and the government then becomes oppressive to the point where we have no choice but to revolt, we won’t be able to.

Before you call me crazy, yes, that can happen. It happened in Germany in the 1930s, when the Nazis used seemingly wellintentioned gun control laws to disarm political opponents, according to the Mises Institute website, in addition to authorizing warrantless search and seizure of homes. Just look at our own history for a prime example of the need to be able to overthrow a tyrannical government.

“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, perhaps some of the most beautiful words ever written.

This is why protecting our liberties is so important. If we give even a few of them up, we put ourselves in a position to lose the rest of them, no matter how rational and noble our reasons are. editor@dailytoreador.com

The ACLU has mounted its own legal challenge, and on appeal, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, in a decision announced in May, said, “the program exceeds the scope of what Congress has authorized” under the Patriot Act, which, according to The Washington Post article, is the only court decision thus far to rule on the merits of the case.

Still, many, including Christie and some other Republicans, defend it.

The Patriot Act, passed in the wake of 9/11, vastly expanded the government’s ability to conduct searches and seizures, including wiretapping and collecting records, without establishing probable cause, according to the ACLU website. Probable cause is a key component of the Fourth Amendment.

The Patriot Act has long been controversial, and Snowden’s revelation showed just how far the government has gone under it. These intrusions are unlawful and unconstitutional, and the Paul-Christie exchange about the NSA data collection program demonstrates the two sides of the argument.

Paul said he wanted to “collect more records from terrorists but less records from innocent Americans,” drawing the ire of Christie, who asked how that was even possible, according to an Aug. 6 Politico article titled “Rand Paul and Chris Christie in angry exchange

over national security.” Paul sharply replied, “Use the Fourth Amendment. Get a warrant. Get a judge to sign the warrant.”

Christie finished the exchange by using the Sept.

11 attacks to justify his support of the program, which was the justification for the Patriot Act in the first place.

“We have to catch the terrorists” is how the law was sold, taking a page from the Democrats’ playbook about never letting a good tragedy go to waste.

Essentially, we gave up liberty in exchange for a sense of security, which is a terrible trade to make for a multitude of reasons. As Benjamin Franklin said, according to ushistory.org, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

History is littered with examples of societies giving up essential liberties and then ultimately paying the price, because once a government — any government — gets an additional taste of power, it won’t let go without a fight.

It’s also not hard to imagine how these programs can be abused. If there is no need to establish probable cause and obtain a warrant, the government can freely determine the standard used to search and seize individuals’ records and property, and that’s just begging to be abused. A party in power could easily use such a standard to classify political opponents as “terrorists,” and it would only snowball from there.

This is exactly why the Fourth Amendment was written into the Bill of Rights. The founding fathers knew the risk of allowing a government to operate

Open Seeds Innovation Center debuts

As a part of a partnership with Bayer CropScience, Texas Tech hosted the grand opening of the $16 million, 100,000 square-foot Open Seeds Innovation Center Wednesday at the new building.

The building is located on the north side of the Marsha Sharp Freeway and south of the International Cultural Center.

Inside the building will be Bayer’s global cotton business operations and laboratories, and research facilities for students to use in cooperation with Bayer employees, according to a Texas Tech news release. The facility will also include a 50,000 squarefoot greenhouse.

The greenhouse has its own irrigation system and can house 7,500 soybean plants or 30,000 mid-size cotton plants, according to the release. There is also enough room to minimize cross-contamination of plant pollen or processing errors.

The building serves as an example of the relationship Tech has with Bayer that gives students greater opportunities to explore academic

and industry relationships, Tech President M. Duane Nellis said.

In the past, partnerships with Bayer were not done as in-depth on campus, but this expansion allows for collaboration on site and increased opportunities for Tech students and researchers to work with Bayer in the future, Michael Galyean, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, said.

“We expect that the increased research and academic opportunities associated with a Bayer presence on campus will boost recruitment and retention of top-quality faculty members, post-doctoral scientists and graduate students,” he said, “while also attracting visiting scholars from around the globe.”

Bayer is one of the nation’s leading agricultural research companies, according to the release, and the company works to improve yields, protecting crops from disease and pests while maintaining a healthy environment through innovative solutions.

“Our undergraduate students should benefit from increased opportunities to work in the new facility,” Galyean said, “along with the potential for student internships in collaborative research and applied field application programs.”

Not only will this partnership and new building help Tech students and researchers, according to the release, but it will also enhance the cotton industry in Lubbock and around West Texas.

The building is also designed to boost seed research for soybean and canola research in addition to cotton research. The building has room for about 100 employees on-site from Bayer.

According to the release, research will center on innovation efforts for breeding, train development and quality, health safety and environmental testing.

“In Texas, cotton is king, and we’re proud to call West Texas home,” Jim Blome, president and CEO of Bayer, said. “What started as a small cotton business in 1998 with three employees has grown in our global cotton headquarters. Today,

Complex Council executive voting ends Friday

At noon on Friday, voting for Complex Council Executive Board members ends online for each residence hall.

According to its website, Complex Council is an organization in each residence hall that focuses on bringing everyone together and providing for all the students living in the hall.

Complex Council is a subdivision of the Residence Halls Association, but is also a student organization within the hall, Assistant Director of Student Leadership Development Craig Kuehnert said.

The group plans social activities, organizes service projects and acts as a voice of the students to the administration.

Complex Council uses funds from every student’s room and board to fund needs the students come up with, Samuel Clark, a junior agriculture business major from Alvin, said.

“I was a senator on Stangel/ Murdough’s complex council last year,” Clark said. “We purchased a new sound system, new volleyballs and nets for events over by the volleyball court.”

Halls can come together to push for something everywhere on campus, Kuehnert said. One of the most recent pushes was to work to get water bottle refill

stations in each of the halls.

At the beginning of every year, an executive board of 5 to 9 members is elected for each hall, Clark said. Any student in the hall can vote for who they want to represent his or her hall.

Kuehnert said regardless, every person in the hall is a member of the Complex Council already.

“Any student that lives in their residence hall is a defacto member of their Complex Council,” Kuehnert said. “That’s because a portion of your room and board rates go to funding Complex Council.”

Any student can participate in the meetings, Clark said.

Most general body meetings occur on Tuesday nights at 9 or 9:30 p.m., Kuehnert said. If a student has an idea, concern or just wants to be involved in planning events, he or she can come to the meetings.

The students of the hall can also attend any of the events the Complex Council puts on, Kuehnert said. It could be a

karaoke party or a coffee night for studying.

Attending the meetings helps students get more involved in the community of the hall, Clark said.

“This is a way to take ownership of your community,” Kuehnert said. “The goal of Complex Council is to build a community within your residence hall.”

Students have the choice to pick who they want to be the voice of their hall, Kuehnert said.

“We would encourage students to go online and vote for their Complex Council Executive Board members,” Kuehnert said. “This is a way for people to vote on the faces of your residence hall.” @DavidGayDT

Employees ensure food quality

With 21 locations, including a mobile food truck, and more than 50 different food options on campus, Texas Tech Hospitality Services offers a varied spread for hungry people.

About 1,000 employees keep food flowing from kitchen to stomachs, including six chefs and 150 full-time employees, executive chef Dewey McMurrey said. The rest of the staff is mostly part-time workers who are also students, he added.

Food safety is a big part of the job, and while September may be Food Safety Awareness Month, McMurrey said they work year-round to make sure employees are knowledgeable in kitchen guidelines and procedures.

Training can include everything from knife safety to food storage and preparation, McMurrey said.

“It kind of covers the broad spectrum of the kitchen,” he added.

Chefs on staff undergo certification through the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe Food Safety Training Program, McMurrey said. The training includes a

refresher course every five years, he said.

Tech dietitian Mindy Diller, who also completes the ServSafe certification, said she also trains hospitality employees on proper ways to serve customers who have food allergies or who are on special diets.

“My training covers allergies, cross-contamination, safe food handling with allergens,” Diller said. “We do a big focus on gluten-free.”

She said they try to cater to a student’s needs no matter where they decide to grab a bite. In order to make sure a person does not come into contact with an allergen, Miller said they have incorporated the “Purple Program” and use the acronym HUGS to remind workers how to handle the situation.

Each of the letters stands for a step in the process: Hands — wash them, Utensils — obtain new, clean ones, Gloves — put on a new pair, and Service — provide it to the customer.

“Purple is a universal allergen color,” Diller said. “I hope it makes students feel better (and) it tells other employees to be aware that they are serving someone with allergies.”

The presentations include topics like preparation tips for students who live in the residence dorms and ways to eat healthier or add fruits and other healthy options to their diets.

Beta Theta Pi recolonizes after five years off campus

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity is recolonizing on Texas Tech’s campus after being removed from campus in 2010 by the fraternity’s national office.

David Greis, the colony development coordinator for Beta, said he will be in Lubbock the remainder of the school year to help the chapter recolonize.

“We are trying to find the guys to build up the Beta chapter,” Greis said.

“And to really be a positive in the guys’ lives and hopefully add a lot of value to the Greek system here as well.”

The fraternity looks for gentlemen, scholars and leaders, Greis said.

Beta plans to be involved

in brotherhood events, social events, philanthropy events and mixers with sororities, he said, as well as have members focus on grades.

“We want Beta to really compliment the college experience,” Greis said, “but we don’t want it to be the entire college experience.

Grades are a priority.”

All classifications are welcome, he said, and finding the right type of members is going to help bring a positive image back to the fraternity.

It is going to be important for the chapter to recruit members with the same values as the fraternity, he said.

“We want guys who maybe didn’t find their fit in the fraternities they looked at,” Greis said, “and maybe want to build this positive experience.”

Hazing can include making new members be designated drivers and making them dress up on days the fraternity has chapter meetings, Greis said.

“It is a vague term,” Greis said, “but I think hazing encompasses everything you require new members to do that you don’t require actives to do.”

Jake Sellers, a sophomore biology major from Odessa, said he went to a few different fraternity houses during formal rush but saw something different in Beta.

Sellers said Beta was unique because they sat down and looked at his resume and grade point average and asked him about leadership.

The fraternity does not want to be associated with hazing at all, he said, and will be strict.

Sellers said he wants to be a part of something that has produced great leaders.

Beta spends millions of dollars each year on leadership development programs, Greis said, and has

more Fortune 500 CEOs than any other fraternity.

Jared Culpepper, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Odessa, said he heard Beta was coming back to Tech and after doing research, contacted the fraternity.

Culpepper said he likes what the fraternity stands for and likes the opportunities he will have as a founding father of the fraternity on campus.

With the help of Beta, Culpepper said, he hopes to be a leader at Texas Tech and change the face of Greek life on campus.

So far the chapter has about 30 members, Culpepper said, and he is excited to learn the history of the fraternity.

The chapter has a threeor four-step process before giving out bids to new members to get to know the men and their values, Greis said.

Beta has 134 chapters nationally, he said, and is also colonizing this year at Louisiana State University, the University of Texas, the University of CaliforniaBerkeley and the University of Rochester. @EastonWollneyDT

Stefano Pangilinan, a senior geography major from Houston, said he has worked at The Market at Stangel/ Murdough for the past three years as a cashier and preparing and serving food. Before working at Tech, he said, he spent time working at IHOP and Whataburger.

Pangilinan said the safety training he has received at Tech was similar to his previous jobs and is taken seriously.

“It’s very thorough training,” Pangilinan said, adding it includes handwashing, cleanliness and food handling. “Everything from opening to closing, everything has to be checked.”

He said he enjoys the flexibility the job offers, the work atmosphere and the variety The Market offers.

“I love eating here,” Pangilinan said. “There’s so much to choose from.”

The Market, which includes offerings like an assortment of carved meats and Mexican and Asian cuisines, is the busiest location on campus, Diller said. The Commons at Talkington Hall, where students can find a pizzeria and a grilled cheese line, comes in second.

Diller said she encourages students to check out some of the other places on campus and find new options.

“They find a place they like and they keep going back to it,” Diller said. “They don’t realize what is out there. Each place has its own specialty.”

Texas Tech was one of five winners of the Harry H. Mellon 2014 Award of Merit in Job Order Contracting for the Red Raider Ballroom renovation project.

The project was started in Feb. 2014 and was completed in a four-month period.

The $1.8 million project renovated 8,000 square feet of area, giving it a new look and feel, Brenda Bullard, director for Engineering Ser-

vices at Tech Operations Division, said.

“For this project we had a very short time window to get the work done and there was a lot of work to be done,” Bullard said.

The new look of the ballroom is one of the students’ and their parents’ first and lasting impressions of Tech, Bullard said, and the new space ensures a positive experience.

A few of the features of the

renovated ballroom include custom carpet with Double-T logos, color-changing LED lighting, a working gas fireplace, two projector screens and a state-of-the-art video wall and motorized partition to divide the space into two rooms, she said.

“They used the room extensively for Red Raider Orientations, and we wanted to put our best foot forward,” Bullard said. “Not to mention it is used

year-round for a multitude of different purposes.”

The merit award was presented by The Gordian Group.

According to its website, the award is presented to projects exemplifying outstanding principles and practices in Job Order Contracting.

Tailgating returns with football season

A tradition that has withstood the test of time, tailgating, has become as much of a game day tradition for many college and professional sports teams as anything else.

With the upcoming football game against Sam Houston State University on Saturday, there are many important tailgating factors fans should be aware of.

According to Gameday.com, a sports entertainment website focusing on college and professional sports, Texas Tech is one of the many schools offering a wide variety of game day tailgating locations.

The website specifically names Raider Alley and Raidergate as two of the most common places for people to partake in the activity, but there are many more not as directly related to Tech.

Student-oriented Raidergate is, however, an overlooked site by many students, Jon Mark Bernal, associate director for Student Union and Activities, said.

Raidergate is a free way for students to gain access to any pre- or post-game activities, Bernal said, and reserv-

ing a spot is free.

“Basically, Raidergate is our student tailgate tradition that we have here on campus,” Bernal said. “It is located in the R-1 lot.

A lot of people don’t know where that is, but basically it is at 15th and Detroit.”

Raidergate has gone through several trial and error stages to eliminate possible tailgating problems for students, Bernal said, and Raidergate now has an online system for students to reserve their spots.

With each reservation a student makes, he or she is allowed two spots for whatever vehicles they may have.

The passes are available on the Monday prior to the week’s game, he said. Because students of the university and their organizations are the only ones permitted to be on the lot, the only way to log in and reserve spots is by using an eRaider account.

“Once the lot is full there is no more spots,” he said, “but we never shut the lot.”

This means any passerby can come through the lot, but there is not any more parking available, Bernal said. Because grills are imminent in a tailgating setting, those who participate in Raidergate are asked to only grill on paved areas and not use

the grassy portions of the lot as places to grill or cook.

Opening the lot four hours prior to kickoff gives everyone enough time to set up music systems and lawn chairs, Bernal said. However, no cars are allowed in the lot 30 minutes before the football game starts.

“Once you get into Raidergate, you’re there,” Bernal said, “and you’re there until the end of the game.”

Student Union and Activities partners up with Tech Activities Board to host Raidergate, Bernal said. TAB is out in the lot on game day, handing out trash bags, checking people in and making sure everyone has their signature Raidergate cups.

No glass containers are allowed in the Raidergate lot, Bernal said, and all drinks must be in a cup provided by TAB at the gate. Alcohol is allowed on the premises, but no drinking games or common-use containers, like kegs, are permitted.

“Usually I meet people I know in a more formal classroom setting,” Nestor Rodriguez, a chemical engineering major from Bogota, Columbia, said.

“This way I get to hang out with friends and sit and talk in a more fun setting.”

on a regular basis, he said, and it doesn’t matter what time the game is because tailgating with friends at any time is a great thing to do.

Even if he and his friends have to be up and at the lot at 8 a.m., Rodriguez said, it is still a

fun opportunity to enjoy a football game with food and drinks.

Tailgating also makes the day seem a bit more adventurous, he said. If the game ends early and everything is packed up and done, there is an opportunity to go out and eat or do

something else afterward.

“The main thing is this is a free event, which makes it better because so many people charge for things like this,” Bernal said.

Students share favorite football traditions

For many, Texas Tech football is the highlight of a Red Raider’s college experience.

Whether it be sitting in the student section, watching as the Masked Rider thunders across the field to kick off the game, or wrapping the Will Rogers statue in bright scarlet ribbon, Tech football is going to be on students’ minds this week.

As the first home game of the year against Sam Houston State University draws near, Tech students Gordon Sandercox, Katrina Gonzales and Jordan Hernandez reveal what they are most eager about for the first game of the season and their favorite traditions.

Gordon Sandercox, a junior computer science major from Arlington, said he is most excited about the atmosphere inside Jones AT&T Stadium.

“I’m excited for the energy that is going to be going between every fan and how every

individual on the campus becomes part of a giant team that gets to chant and have fun,” he said. “It’s just exciting because we all get to let go of every ounce of stress we have and enjoy a fun game of football.”

Sandercox said his favorite game day traditions are seeing the Masked Rider and going to

the blackout games.

“When that cannon goes off and the Masked Rider darts down the field, I feel the energy go through the crowd and I literally feel like I could play that game with them,” he said. “Another favorite tradition of mine is the Blackout the Jones because I think it’s

really intimidating, and it is so cool to be able to look on the other side of the stadium and see pure black. I think both of these traditions are great for supporting our team and I love the energy and spirit our fans have.”

Katrina Gonzales, a junior electronic media and communications major from Lubbock, also shared her love of the Masked Rider darting across the field as her favorite tradition. She said she is most excited about going to the games as a student.

“I have gone before, but it was just as a fan,” she said, “so this time I’m excited for how different it is going to be from a different perspective, sitting with the other students.”

Jordan Hernandez, a freshman journalism major from Lubbock, said he is looking forward to the Tech game day atmosphere.

“I’m excited to see fans come together,“ he said.
