Playing with fire Tech allows presence of alcohol in Raider Alley, residence hall By KAITLIN BAIN News editor

ith the addition of the West Village Residence Hall and alcohol at Raider Alley, Texas Tech is allowing more opportunities for students to have access to alcoholic beverages. As a part of Tech’s alcohol policy, according to the University Student Housing website, students are not allowed to have a container of alcohol present in dorm rooms unless the student lives in the West Village Residence Hall and is 21 or older. While Tech restricts alcohol consumption on campus to those 21 or older, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 40 percent of students binge drink, and more than half of students surveyed, younger than 21, said they think it is easy to find alcohol. Forrest Mancini, a junior mechanical engineering major from San Antonio, said he lives in the West Village Residence Hall but is not allowed to have alcohol in his dorm. “Originally both buildings were supposed to allow alcohol, but now only Building B does because they didn’t have enough upperclassmen to fill Building A,” he said. “I’m totally for them allowing alcohol in this dorm, but I was moderately disappointed that what they told me wasn’t correct.” According to Texas Tech’s 2012 Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure Act, there were 524 liquor law violations on Tech campus and adjacent property, 461 occurring in on-campus student housing. To enforce these restrictions, community advisers are required to perform room checks, according to the Tech student handbook. This year will be the first year administration has allowed alcohol for purchase at Raider Alley, a Tech tailgating tradition that provides entertainment for all ages, Blayne Beal, associate director of athletics, said. “That’s what we were trying to make it: a one-stop shop,” he said. “It’s just something that we always want: to be adaptive in our approach to game day and see what works and see what doesn’t work. Last year we got a lot of great feedback and last year the thing that fans wanted was just a little bit more. So we’re providing more of a complete game day experience for fans.” While alcohol purchase is now allowed at Raider Alley, it is still not available inside the stadium, with the exception of premium seats, he said. If alcohol was available for purchase in the stadium, it would change the pass out policy, the ability to leave the game to tailgate at halftime, he said. “That’s something that’s very popular with our fans and would be met with a lot of resistance if we stopped that,” he said. “So, we’ve made the decision to not sell alcohol in the stadium this year.” The Tech Alumni Association that meets across the street from the stadium also distributes alcohol to its members, he said. Tech Athletics is not currently looking to expand alcohol sales in the stadium, he said, but they will continue listening to fans’ input in the future. ALCOHOL continued on Page 2 ➤➤
