he Texas Tech defense allowed 17 points against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Saturday, and Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said the team began the season on a good note. Tech’s offense has predominantly been successful under coach Kingsbury. Tech averaged a school record of 45.1 points

Flag lowered for recent student death The Texas Tech flag at Memorial Circle will be lowered today in memory of Seth Jordan Scarborough, a sophomore in the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. Scarborough died Wednesday after falling from the trunk of a moving vehicle, according to the Lubbock Police Department. He was 21 years old. According to a news release from the LPD, a 2006 Acura was backing out of a private drive in the 2300 block of 28th Street. The driver of the vehicle was unaware of Scarborough sitting on the trunk. The vehicle continued eastbound on 28th Street, and Scarborough fell from the vehicle. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the University Medical Center by Lubbock Emergency Medical Services. No one else was injured. The Lubbock Police Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene and is investigating the crash, according to LPD. Scarborough was a foundational engineering major from The Woodlands, according to an email from the Dean of Students at Tech. @ReeceNationsDT

Nilehn wins individual title at Carmel Cup, team places third The Texas Tech men’s golf team took part in the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California, over the weekend to begin its 2016-2017 season. The team placed third overall, and junior Fredrik Nilehn received an individual title for his performance. Nilehn made his Tech debut at the tournament after transferring from Kennesaw State, according to a Tech Athletics news release. Nilehn went -14 over NILEHN the weekend and was just one of three players to post three sub-70 rounds and the only player to have two rounds of 67 or better, according to the release. Nilehn captured Tech’s 19th individual tournament title under Tech coach Greg Sands, according to the release. “I’m extremely happy with how we competed against some of the best teams in the country,” Sands said in the release. “Fredrik (Nilehn) was outstanding. He was consistent throughout and deserved to win. There are always spots where we can improve, but this was a great way to start the season.” Tech finished the tournament in third place, one shot behind No. 6 Georgia. According to the release, the Red Raiders outplayed three teams ranked in Golfstat’s top 20, which are, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 18 Arkansas. The Red Raiders will play in the Paintbrush Intercollegiate Oct. 10-11 in Denver. @BSoliz_DT
