Vivian Nguyen, a sophomore retail management major from Houston, attended the festival with a friend. This was their first balloon festival, she said. “I’ve never seen hot air balloons, so I thought it’d be really cool to go watch some,” Nguyen said. “I’ve never had the chance.”

Milo Yiannopoulos to make first visit to Tech campus

Tech student provides new form of free transportation

By LINDA HARDWICKE Staff Writer

The Young Conservatives of Texas will host political pundit Milo Yiannopoulos from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today in the Matador Room of the Student Union Building. Yiannopoulos is a controversial figure in the realm of free speech. He was previously scheduled to visit Texas Tech in April, according to a previous article from The Daily Toreador, but he had to cancel for personal reasons. Yiannopoulos, tech editor for Breitbart, is scheduled to appear on at least 26 college campuses this fall as part of his Dangerous Faggot Tour, according to a Breitbart article. Tech will be his first stop. Alec Wallace, a junior agricultural economics major from Lorenzo and chairman of Young Conservatives of Texas, said Yiannopoulos is someone who can help fight political correctness and will encourage the discussions of controversial issues. One of Young Conservatives of Texas’ primary goals is to fight political correctness.

“The great thing about Milo (Yiannopoulos) is, although his points, his points are controversial, always backed up with very good facts and everything. He YIANNOPOULOS always uses facts in his reasoning,” Wallace said. According to the event’s Facebook page, the tickets are sold out, but there will be room to stand, Wallace said. An example of political correctness is Safe Spaces, Wallace said. Though he does not believe they are violations of the First Amendment, such spaces stifle intellectual discussion. “(Yiannopoulos) has no college degree. He is a self-declared expert on free speech, and my whole thing is that he does not provide an educational experience on campus, but I still feel like he should be allowed to speak,” Reese Ramsey, a senior geography major from Petersburg and president of Tech’s Gay Straight Alliance, said.

Benny Paul, a sophomore general studies major from Buffalo, New York, provides free rides to students around campus.

By ALYSSA ACOSTA Staff Writer

Zipping around on streets, sidewalks and up ramps while carrying passengers is just part of the job when one is a bike taxi rider. Benny

Paul, a sophomore general studies major from Buffalo, New York, is providing students with a new way to get around. Unlike most college sophomores, Paul is experienced in transporting valuable cargo. As a

driver for the U.S. Army, Paul said he drove trucks carrying explosives and other supplies for three years. After finishing his service, Paul was a professional truck driver.
