he University Career Center at Texas Tech offers résumé critiquing, mock in-person and over-the-phone interviews and career assessments to help find internships and jobs for students and alumni.

Jay Killough, managing director at the career center, said the experience students gain from having an internship is one of the many benefits they receive.

Having an internship is also a good way for students to realize what they enjoy doing, Killough said, and what field of work they want to go into after graduation.

“It’s kind of a trial phase, where students really get to see what the world of work is like,” he said, “and it could give them valuable onthe-job experience.”

Another benefit, Killough said, is that some companies offer jobs to their interns after graduation.

Some companies looking for students to intern through Tech include the San Antonio Spurs, financial companies and nonprofit organizations, he said.

The career center has internships available for students to apply to for a variety of majors, Killough

said, a n d has alliance centers in several colleges at Tech, such as media and communication and engineering, which help students with internships and job placement.

“We serve all students so we want to be able to provide a little bit of something for everyone,” Killough said.

The center does not place students in internship programs, he said, but helps them find what they are looking for.

Some majors at Tech require students to complete an internship or practicum before graduating, Killough said, and most majors offer course credit if a student has an internship related to his or her major.

Tech offers statistics on graduates

After graduation, job rates for students vary by major. Texas Tech has developed a way to keep track of these statistics.

More than 10 years ago, the University Career Center partnered with the provost’s office to create a graduation survey supplement to see where recent graduates were working after college, Jay Killough, managing director for the career center, said.

“There has always been a graduation survey, but the supplement we created was a job survey,” Killough said.

For the past two years, the survey has been online and has not been mandatory, he said, so only about 30 percent of students responded.

Students who are usually recruited earlier in the year by employers, such as engineering and business majors, have the highest employment rate at the time of graduation, Killough said.

“It depends on when you look at the data,” he said.

Many students get excited about job offers and forget to fill out the surveys, Winkelman said.

“It’s totally natural,” he said, “and we understand that.”

“In general, when you look at all of Texas Tech as a whole, we are between 72 and 78 percent placement,” Killough said, “where students have made a decision on their first destination after graduation.”

He said this percentage also includes students who have decided to enter graduate school.

The Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration, which makes up about 25 percent of all undergraduate students at Tech, recently had a job placement rate of more than 90 percent, according to a Tech news release, and this is the highest rate the business school has experienced.

Ashanti Walker, a freshman finance major from Texas City, said he intends to take advantage of the resume critique and career assessment tests the career center offers to students.

Walker said he would fill out the survey upon graduation to help Tech have more accurate statistics of former students’ employment rates.

National unemployment is about 9 percent, but college graduates’ unemployment rate is 4.5 percent and those who have a doctorate degree have a 2 percent unemployment rate, according to the Tech website.

Engineers, architects and lawyers are some of the most popular jobs among Texas Tech alumni, according to a PayScale report on Tech, and British Petroleum, Academy and Dell are some of the top employers.

Internships can help students gain real-world experience in their career field of choice.

With this in mind, colleges in Texas Tech offer resources and required programs for students.

Aleesa Ross, director of the Center for Student Success in the College of Media and Communication, said journalism students are required to complete an internship while other majors in the college are not.

“We want our students to have a basic foundation before they go out and represent the college,” Ross said. “Before

they go out and are working for someone, we want them to have some of those basic skills already ROSS under their belt to have an understanding of how the industry works.”

Journalism students have to complete an internship to graduate while for other students, it is an elective, she said. There are specific criteria set forth by the faculty students have to meet. One criterion is that the internship has to be in the field of journalism.

Ross said the college wants

to encourage students to develop journalism skills before going into the field after graduation.

BROUGHTON Students pay to take a course to get the credit to graduate and send Ross weekly reports, write papers and submit a supervisor’s evaluation, she said.

“Basically, we want them to be immersed in a professional setting related to their major, and I check in on their progress,” she said.

The internships can be paid or unpaid and still receive

credit, Ross said, but the college does require the internship to be a new experience. For example, a student cannot use a job as an internship.

“I think requiring an internship for our journalism students is one of the best things we could ever do for them,” she said.

“We’re gonna force them to get that real-world experience before they leave here.”

Barry Broughton, senior director of the Career Management Center and Center for Global Engagement, said internships are completely up to the students and not required by the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration.

The center has workshops to help students polish their resumes, practice interview skills and find places to apply, Broughton said.

The center also hosts fairs where it brings employers in to meet students for networking opportunities, he said.

“It’s great to be involved on campus and take on leadership roles and whatnot, but that only goes so far,” he said. “So if you have a candidate that has one or two internships in the field that they’re going into versus someone else who doesn’t, that person with the experience is going to have that upper hand.”

David Ernst, interim department chair and associate professor of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, said only construction students are required to complete an internship to graduate.

The requirement benefits students because it helps them narrow down their career choices within construction engineering, he said.

“It gives them a career-related experience before graduation, so that’s a big plus on the resume,” Ernst said, “that in return helps them have a little better opportunity at acquiring a job after graduation.”

He said 99.9 percent of the internships are paid internships, so students can use that money to pay for school.

The students also have to write an essay and give a presentation to get credit to graduate, Ernst said. The internship can be completed part time during the school year or full time during the summer.

“I think that the students really find the internships they experience very beneficial,” he said. “It gives them a clearer idea of what to expect after graduation and a lot of times help them fine tune what companies they want to work for or not work for.” @KristenBartonDT

Student employees discuss campus work

Texas Tech employs more than 5,600 student employees who have been an essential component in the university’s workforce for several decades. As classes get into full swing, students discuss their experiences working on the Tech campus.

Maria Maza, a senior English major from Mexico City, works as an English and Spanish tutor for the Learning Center at Tech.

“I’ve been working here since Fall 2013,” Maza said.

“It really is (a long time).”

Having worked for two years now, Maza said she remembers when she first arrived at Tech with no work experience except for the occasional help she offered her mother.

Maza said there were times when she found it hard to manage academics, work, social life and everything else that is an integral part of collegiate life, but eventually she learned to prioritize her tasks and manages her time more effectively.

Working during college teaches people to be responsible for themselves, Maza said, while making it clear that their parents will not always be there to support them.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Maza said. “I think college is kind of what starts preparing you for the real world.”

Candice Rice, associate managing director for Human Resources Systems at Tech, said some departments on campus employ a relatively large percentage of student employees. A few of those

departments include Student Housing, Recreational Sports, Tech Athletics and Hospitality Services.

Eduardo Espinoza, a senior wind energy major from Odessa, said he has worked for Hospitality Services for more than two years and is currently employed as a student manager.

Espinoza said he regularly works about 20 hours each week but has been able to manage his time effectively.

Working has many benefits, he said, but it, in some ways, may also be necessary.

“Well, you gotta have money, I guess. You’ve got to pay bills and stuff,” Espinoza said, “and then you also have some money to have fun. So, that’s part of it, too.”

Daniel Davis, a senior biology major from Round Rock, and Lauren Shulman, a junior energy commerce major from Austin, are both employed by the Honors College at Tech.

Davis serves as the lead student ambassador and student recruiter for the college, he said. He interacts with prospective students to the Honors College and also works closely with the student recruiters.

“So, really what I get to do is come in here and talk to students about the Honors College, meet with their parents, talk to them, attend events,” he said. “So, it’s a lot of fun.”

Working on- or off-campus while attending college may prove to be necessary, Davis said, depending on the situation.

“I wish that people could just focus on their studies, and I realize that’s just not possible,” he said, “but I think

it’s doable.”

No matter what the situation might be, people always find a way of making things work, he said. His mother, who had to work two jobs while also attending college, made him believe that working during college is definitely possible.

Shulman works in the Honors College reception area as a student assistant to staff and administration.

“It’s really lucky if you’re able to work on campus, for sure,” she said. “It’s so hard to get an (on-campus) job nowadays. As students we do really enjoy working on campus.”

One of the advantages of working on campus is that employers are able to understand and appreciate problems students might face, Shulman said. They understand if someone needs to leave a few minutes early in order to get to class or if someone needs a day off in order to prepare for a test.

“I think the only disadvantage (is that) you can only work 20 hours a week,” she said.

“Whereas some of my other friends can work 30 hours a week, I’m only working 20.”

This disadvantage, however, is evenly balanced, Shulman said. Even 20 hours could be almost too much for a fulltime student, and the rule, additionally, helps to keep students in check.

The 20 hours per week rule is outlined in Tech’s Operating Policies and Procedures.

Through her job, she has acquired a useful skill set that has made her not only a well-rounded worker but also a well-rounded individual.

Muslim student with clock plans transfer IRVING (AP) — The latest on the Muslim teenager who was questioned by police after officials at his North Texas high school thought his homemade clock looked like a bomb.

A 14-year-old boy says he’s still suspended from school because of an alarm clock he made that school officials thought looked like a bomb.

Irving police arrested MacArthur High School freshman Ahmed Mohamed after a teacher found the clock he made to be suspicious. Police later said they wouldn’t press charges, but Ahmed told reporters Wednesday that he remains suspended from school until Thursday.

Ahmed told reporters during a news conference Wednesday afternoon that he plans to transfer to “any other school.”

A Texas mayor who has accused mosque leaders of creating separate laws for Muslims says school officials followed protocol when investigating whether a Muslim student brought a bomb to school.

Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne comments on Facebook Wednesday came after word spread that 14-yearold Ahmed Mohamed was placed in handcuffs and sus-

the Donald Trump show, all of these candidates took any chance to take a jab at Trump or Barack Obama or channel their inner Ronald Reagan.

Once the debate actually started, I realized my biggest issue with the theme of this debate is that none of these candidates can actually relate to young people.

None of them have real, comprehensive ways to help young people.

If America wants to increase voter turnout with college students, then the GOP must address issues related to young people and solve them in a way that benefits us.

For one, these candidates are not treating student loan debt as a key issue and main platform. It was not a main component in this debate.

This is problematic because I cannot think of very many issues young people care about that crosses party lines. College students do not care about foreign policy enough to pay attention for all of the airtime spent on it. I am not saying college students do not ever care about foreign policy. Obviously, that is not true at all, but there are a variety of other issues that have to be talked about also.

For example, immigration. Young people are coming to America or they are the children of immigrants at a higher rate than ever.

thing, he basically tells us to trust him because h e ’s m a d e b i l l i o n s . H e says his immigration plan is to build a wall and deport everyone, yet can’t even explain if that will be feasible. He doesn’t say how he’ll deal with foreign leaders other than that he’ll talk to them and they’ll “get along.”

What’s sad, though, is that his supporters probably still think he did a great job, which is perfectly indicative of why he’s leading in the polls.

People blindly follow him regardless of what he says because he’s not a politician and he’s “telling it like it is,” which is a complete bastardization of the political process. Because of this, he’ll still be a major player in this race.

The rest of the candidates were uninspiring at best, partially because there are so many of them. They all essentially ran together.

Ben Carson has recently surged in the polls, partially thanks to a strong performance in the Fox News debate in August.

This time, Carson did not distinguish himself. While I like his idea of having two different minimum wages, he was largely overshadowed in spite of his spot standing next to Trump.

Fiorina will be coming up on his heels soon.

Jeb Bush, really needing a strong performance to lift his campaign, was uninspiring at best. He had one good comment about his mother not being happy that he admitted to smoking marijuana 40 years ago, but, like Carson, he was otherwise overshadowed.

He didn’t perform poorly, but didn’t distinguish himself well enough to make a difference.

Rand Paul also failed to make a big splash in spite of his promise to go after Trump. He did well amongst his libertarian-

leaning base by getting his ideas out there, but likely did not bring many new Republican supporters into his camp. His support of allowing states to legalize marijuana will sit well with indepen dents, but it may not help him in the primary. He’ll continue to face an uphill battle from here.

Ted Cruz demonstrated his ability to be overly dramatic and to trumpet what he believed to be his greatest accomplishments.

Marco Rubio, like Cruz, was tough on Iran, and overall they both seemed very similar, except for Rubio’s profuse sweating.

Neither made a big impact.

Chris Christie can’t seem to get past the fact that he is largely unlikable, and the same can be said for Scott Walker.

John Kasich is simply too nice and doesn’t offer enough substance. None of these candidates are at all inspiring, and I often lost interest when they spoke. What they said really mattered little in the overall debate.

Mike Huckabee yet again demonstrated why he’s a moron. His chastising the Supreme Court for legalizing same-sex marriage and claiming the Kim Davis controversy means a war has been declared on Christianity showed how out of touch he really is.

Huckabee clearly doesn’t understand the Constitution and has no idea what a winnable platform is.

While his fair tax idea is nice, his presence on the debate stage is doing more harm than good.

There are just too many candidates on the stage at this point, and it’s hard for individuals to stand out because of that. Fiorina had a fantastic showing and is really going to make a move, but the rest of the performances were either milquetoast or, in the case of Huckabee, just plain embarrassing. Logan Winkelman, the assistant director for the career center, said she was an intern for the center before being offered a job.

Interning also gives students a chance to network, Winkelman said, and several students intern in different cities and states around the country.

Students share internship experiences

Talks of the workforce can be a frightening notion to many students, and with more students enrolled in four-year universities than ever before, setting one’s-self apart for a job is important.

According to an article by U.S. News and World Report, the experience of an internship, added to the four years or more of an undergraduate degree, is crucial to landing entry-level positions. Internships are a chance to gain the real-world experience needed to hit the ground running, according to the article, but internships also help to mold career expectations.

Lana Roberts, a senior prenursing major from Austin, took an internship two summers ago in Iringa, Tanzania for three weeks working in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology.

“My goal of doing (this internship) was to help me get into nursing school, basically,” Roberts said.

Many nations’ medical practices are different from those in the U.S., she said, and getting used to dealing with the differences gave the experience more of an impact.

The hospital did not use anesthesia during childbirth and had primitive medical tools, Roberts said, and seeing the struggle of the Tanzanian people firsthand gave her more perspective on the field she wants

to go into.

One of the things that gives students the upper hand for Texas Tech’s nursing school is prior experience, Roberts said.

She wanted to travel the world, and she stumbled upon Gap Medics, a nursing school organization that helps introduce students to different types of study abroad programs.

“I thought, why not combine traveling and doing what you need to do?” she said. “I just started Googling it, and I found it.”

Roberts said she was able to collaborate with students involved in the same program from all around the world during her internship.

During her internship, Roberts said, a young girl came in after being bitten by a cobra and in desperate need of antivenom to avoid amputation of one of her legs. The girl was not able to afford the antivenom, so the doctor Roberts was shadowing spent nearly $2,000 out of his own pocket to have it shipped to the hospital overnight, only to have it stolen in the shipping process.

The doctor was able to pay for another dose, and managed to give the girl the proper injection in time, Roberts said.

Because of malnutrition and lack of transportation, the hospitals also saw many broken femurs and had a unique way of healing.

“The way that they take care of broken bones over there is

they take half of the amount of weight of your leg, and they get sandbags and they wrap your leg and hang it over the edge of the bed to straighten it out,” she said. “And it’s so painful watching that. I gave a little boy my Snickers bar because he was getting it done, and he was like 12.”

Roberts said because Tech has a strong focus on diversity, she had experience getting used to having different types of people around her. This allowed her to quickly adapt to being in a different environment in Tanzania and go straight into focusing on her work.

Taking a more domestic approach to internships, Student Government Association President Holton Westbrook, a senior agriculture business major from Stephenville, took a Washington, D.C. internship over the summer in the Office of the House Committee on Agriculture.

Westbrook said he had a goal to work either in a business-oriented setting or to work among the lawmakers of the country, and his internship gave him the opportunity to venture into just one direction of his goals.

“Being able to work in Washington, D.C. gave me the upmost experience of that specific field,” Westbrook said. “So it was definitely an interest of mine since my freshman year of college.”

He had to act more grown up because he was working with confidential documents that were not to be spoken of outside of the office, he said.

“There’s a lot of things that you find out in there that you have to keep to yourself,” he said, “and I worked on the House Committee on Agriculture, and they passed two bills earlier this summer that I couldn’t say

a word about, even to my roommates that I was with.”

It was this internship that showed Westbrook what type of work he can do, and he said a job similar to what he was doing is still a viable way to enter the workforce.

“It made me realize instead of, ‘Yes this is what I want to do,’ or ‘No,’ it was like, ‘I can do this, but this isn’t where I want to be,’” he said. “I started seeing a field path that I

would rather go.”

Through major-specific classes and working with people of different origins, gaining the right type of internship only strengthens the skills learned while in college, he said.

“Never be afraid to experience the environment you’re in and the job,” Westbrook said.

“Always find ways to say yes to opportunities whatever it is, even if you’re questioning it.” @MichaelCantuDT

Some Texas Tech faculty use the topics they teach in ways outside of the teaching world.

According to her website, Tina Fuentes, professor in the School of Art, has had her artwork shown around the globe.

When Fuentes paints, it’s her research time, she said.

“I am constantly painting and investigating materials in my media,” Fuentes said.

Fuentes has gained national exposure from her work, she said, and her work has also shown internationally in China and South America.

Her work has also been

shown in places such as restaurants and private homes of wealthy individuals wanting to promote the work, she said.

“The perks of having this much exposure is that you are able to sell the work and turn around and feed the habit,” Fuentes said. “The habit being turning around and going to do that research.”

Teaching takes up a majority of Fuentes’ time, she said, but she has a passion for both teaching and painting.

“The teaching is going to occupy a percentage of my time during the day,” Fuentes said. “I may be able to have an afternoon off, so I can get home and get in the mode of working in a studio space.”

The teaching mode and the research mode are different, Fuentes said. She has to get out of the teaching mode and get into the clarity of mind in the deep research mode.

“I have been able to balance it because I have been doing this for the past 30 years,” Fuentes said.

Tim Day, professor of English, runs a website where he writes movie reviews, which he said he has done for about four or five years.

“The website has been great. It gets a lot of traffic and I have built a following with it,” Day said. “I write with a sense of humor and I think that’s why it attracts some of my readers.”

As well as running the website and teaching English at Tech, Day said he also teaches film at Arizona State University online.

“I’m really passionate about teaching,” Day said.

“I’m really grateful that I have the opportunity to teach full time. I really love the experience of being in the classroom and interacting with the students.”

Day also is an event coordinator for the Alamo Drafthouse in Lubbock, he said.

“I try and converge these things, whether it is writing reviews, working for Alamo Drafthouse or teaching film for Arizona State or English for Tech,” Day said.

“All of these things come under the umbrella of being passionate about film, about language and about teaching students.” @DavidGayDT

Bradley Marquez speaks on NFL week one impact Former Texas Tech football player Bradley Marquez did not wait long to make an impact at the National Football League level.

After his time at Tech, Marquez was signed by the St. Louis Rams, and on Sunday during the Rams’ first game he recovered a mis-hit kickoff against the Seattle Seahawks to seal the St. Louis victory.

“Going into your first game, you know, there’s kind of just butterflies, and especially when you’re just kind of living out your dream,” Marquez said in an interview on the St. Louis Rams website. “Having those guys kind of rally around me and just give me all of the confidence in the world, that’s what helped me go out and perform this past Sunday.”

Marquez said his readiness on the play he was recognized most for was mostly because of his veteran teammates.

“The older guys kind of alerted it,” Marquez said, “and we were kind of all aware that anything could happen.”

Marquez played four years as a wide receiver with the Red Raiders after being drafted by the New York Mets and playing in their minor league system.

In his four years a t Te c h , Marquez caught a touchdown in each of the team’s MARQUEZ season openers, according to the Tech Athletics website, and was 12th in the NCAA in receiving touchdowns during his senior year.

It was not until a week

and a half ago, however, that Marquez knew he had officially made the Rams’ roster.

The first person he called was his mom, he said, and he was mostly happy to be realizing a dream he had for a long time.

“It was honestly just like a big relief, just of fulfilling a dream,” he said. “It’s something I’ve worked for my entire life, and you know to finally have it come true and be reality was just a dream come true.”

Next on the schedule for

the Rams is the Washington football team, who St. Louis will take on at noon on Sunday in Washington.

Marquez said he is excited for his first regular season game on the road, but he and his teammates know how hostile the environment will be in Washington.

“We’re just going to prepare the way we’ve been preparing,” he said, “and just keep trying to get better each and every day.” @EvCorder_DT

Old Southwest Conference rivals Tech and Arkansas play each other for the second in as many seasons.

Senior wide receiver Jakeem Grant said he and his teammates are excited for the opportunity to play a different conference on the road.

“I know they’re going to have a great environment for us. I’m sure the fans are going to boo us and stuff,” he said.

“But it’s going to be great going in there and playing in an SEC stadium. I’ve never played in one.”

The two teams played each other every year from 1957 to 1991, according to a previous article in The Daily Toreador. Historically, the Razorbacks dominated the all-time series, going 29-7 against the Red Raiders, but Tech did win the last time the game was played in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Last season, the rivalry was renewed after a 23-year drought, as Arkansas won in Lubbock 49-28.

The Razorbacks pounded the ball on the ground the entire game and ended up with 438 rushing yards. Junior running back Alex Collins, who carried the ball 27 times for 212 yards and two touchdowns in a backup role, this Saturday he will be starting.

They wore out Tech’s defense and controlled the clock by holding the ball for 40:39, which was more than twice as long as the Red Raiders had the ball, according to the Tech Athletics website.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said last season’s loss was the start of a bad stretch for the team, which the play-

ers remember well.

“You don’t forget a beating like that. So there aren’t a bunch of rah-rahs about last year,” Kingsbury said. “They know what that was.”

In the opening week of this season, Arkansas crushed the University of Texas at El Paso by a score of 48-13. Collins reached 127 rushing yards on only 12 carries.

Last weekend, Toledo upset the Razorbacks 16-12, as Collins was held to 2.7 yards per rush.

Arkansas outgained Toledo offensively 515 to 318, according to the Arkansas Athletics website, behind senior quarterback Brandon Allen’s career-high 412 passing yards, but could not get the ball into the end zone at the end of the game to win.

“They’re a great team.

That loss to me doesn’t change who I thought they were prior to the season,” Kingsbury said. “They’re a top-20 team. Everybody has a bad day.”

While the Arkansas running game receives most of the attention, Allen leads the Southeast Conference in passing yards with 720.

Senior wide receiver Keon Hatcher tops the conference in receiving yards, but will not play on Saturday because of an injury. Junior tight end Hunter Henry, who stands at 6 feet 5 inches and 253 pounds, will still test the Red Raiders in the passing game as he is third in the SEC in receiving yards, according to the conference website.

While Allen has put up big passing numbers so far this season, sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes II has put up even bigger numbers for the Red Raiders. He is leading the Big 12 Conference with 786 passing yards and 10 total touchdowns.

Mahomes favorite target has been Grant. Grant is third in the conference in receiving yards and first in all-purpose yards, according to the Big 12 website.

The Red Raider offense has been one of the fastest in the nation, with five touchdown drives coming in less than a minute and 11 drives in less than two minutes, according to the Tech Athletics website.

Kingsbury said the offense is not going to try to slow down at all against Arkansas to give Tech’s defense more resting time.

“This past Saturday we lost time of possession by about 30 minutes and won by 50,” he said. “So, we are just going to do what we do.”

Through two games, Tech’s defense ranks next to last in the Big 12 in yards allowed and are faced with the task of stopping Collins.

The defensive front seven showed improvement in the second half against UTEP without the main running back Aaron Jones.

Dating back to last season, the Razorbacks defense has allowed only 9.5 points per game in their last six games.

This season, the defense has had a limited pass rush with one sack. Tech’s offensive line has not allowed a

Senior offensive guard Alfredo Morales said the Arkansas defense has some huge players but the offensive

line is confident in its blocking ability.

“They’re some big boys, bigger than what we got in the first two games,” Morales

said. “They’re bigger and faster so we are going out and outsmart them. I think if we do that, we’ll be fine.” @JeremyK_DT
