Tech men’s basketball preparing for season opener By ELEANOR GUINAN

ith less than six weeks until the start of their new season, the senior core of the Texas Tech men’s basketball team is ready to hit the court. Redshirt senior center Norense Odiase, redshirt senior guard Brandone Francis, along with transfer graduate students guard Matt Mooney, forward Tariq Owens and head coach Chris Beard sat side by side to preview the 2018-19 season. The four seniors are ready to lead the young players with their strength, mental approach and consistency. Odiase said he believes this can be a special year, not because it is his senior year, but because he, along with the rest of the seniors, have overcome different adversities to be where they are today. Francis said he knows he needs to be persistent now that he

is a leader to the younger players. “I gotta be more consistent on and off the court,” Francis said. “As a senior now, I got younger guys looking up to me.” Consistency and selflessness are some of the many qualities new transfers Mooney and Owens said they believe the basketball team has taught them since they have arrived in Lubbock. The pair say these qualities are what differentiates the Red Raiders from other teams, and if they continue to work on these qualities they will continue to improve. “I’m really looking forward to battling these guys, just being consistent every day we work,” Owens said. “It’s been a good summer, and I’m really looking forward to this year.” The excitement for this year is sparked by how well the team did last year, as they made it to the Elite Eight for the first time in pro-

gram history. Now that the seniors from last year have graduated, Odiase and Francis must step up and carry on the momentum from last season. “We kind of know what it’s like to be here, this our third year under Coach Beard and his staff, so we kind of know what to expect and what not,” Francis said about stepping into a leadership role. “So it's our job to teach the young guys what to expect, and we are in the best league in college basketball. Everyone is good at this level and we just gotta be ready to work and win games.” When the seniors left the media table to prepare for their first official practice of the season, Beard began to answer pressing questions. A question was raised on Tech’s experience, which will have a significant impact on this year’s squad.

Parking and Guest Relations manager acquires national honor

The J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts School of Theatre and Dance presented its first play of the 2018 season, “Of Beauty Queens and Childhood Dreams,” on Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Christine DeVitt Icehouse Theater. It is free to students and will run at 7:30 p.m. every day until its final performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The play was written by graduate student Michelle Benson as part of her thesis as she pursues a master of fine arts in playwriting. The play is set 1932, during the golden age of Hollywood, and centered around Emma Jane Cobblestone, a newcomer from New Mexico who won a studio contract

in a beauty contest. “I wanted to challenge myself with this play and do something I had never done before,” Benson said. “I set it in a different time and I really like the studio system in old Hollywood, it’s just this incredible thing. Giving a little of that history mixed with writing a play, I wanted to create a realistic story but with a little of the fantasy that comes with being able to write fiction.” A central aspect of the play is the pressure placed on Emma Jane as she navigates Hollywood to pursue her dreams. Benson said she hopes her play will inspire people to study Hollywood in the 1930s and learn more about the uncomfortable situations stars and starlets were often made to face.

Since Texas Tech Transportation and Parking Services hired Lance Rampy in 2014 as unit manager of event parking and guest relations, the university’s positive visitor parking experience has grown. The work Rampy has done has led to improvements in his department, according to a Tech news release. His work has been so effective the National Parking Association awarded him the NPA 40 Under 40 Class of 2018 Award. One of the key components of Rampy’s job is guest relations at visitor parking and campus entry stations when people enter the 1,839-acre campus. His main goal is to make sure the interactions for the guests are

positive and welcoming, according to the release. Rampy also supervises online event parking management, which is completely digital with no need for event passes. After users are trained, campus employees who are hosting events will know how to submit events electronically, according to the release. “The honor is a unique way for those in the parking industry to express their gratitude for accomplishments achieved,” Rampy said in the release. “Since parking is, in many ways a thankless profession, it is incredibly humbling for our team to be recognized for the product and services we provide.”
